Smart Fortwo problems

smart logo

The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car built by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group from 1998 to 2024. In its third generation, the Fortwo has a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design.

The first generation was internally designated as the W450, launched at the 1998 Paris Motor Show. The second generation W451-build series was launched at the 2006 Bologna Motor Show. The third generation Fortwo (2014–) was internally designated as the C453 build series, and debuted globally on July 16, 2014, at the Tempodrom in Berlin along with a closely related four-door version, the Smart Forfour, co-developed and sharing the same platform and engines with the third-generation Renault Twingo.

Marketed in 46 countries worldwide, Fortwo production had surpassed 1.7 million units by early 2015. The brand name Smart supposedly derives from its early history as a cooperative venture between Swatch and Mercedes: Swatch Mercedes ART. The Fortwo nameplate derives from its two-person seating capacity. Until 2002, the Fortwo had been marketed as the smart City-Coupé.

What is the common problem with smart cars?

Smart cars may experience transmission issues such as slipping gears, difficulty shifting, or rough gear changes, indicating potential problems with the transmission fluid, clutch, or internal components.

How reliable are Smart Fortwo cars?

Are Smart cars reliable? According to repairpal.com, the Smart car receives a ⅘ in reliability, putting it at 10th compared to 32 other car brands. It has an 8% probability of the necessary repair being severe, and users will take their Smart car to the repair shop an average of 0.3 times a year.

What are the weaknesses of a Smart Car?

Smart cars are typically only big enough to seat 2 people. This can be a real issue if you have a family of 4. Since they are not really geared towards families, this can be a decided disadvantage to owning one. Never mind the 20 trips you'd have to make to take your daughter's soccer team to practice!

Are smart cars cheap to fix?

But don't forget that the cost of maintaining a typical car can be as slow as $1,200 per year. It goes to say that maintaining a Smart Car costs as much as maintaining a typical car. There are no big disparities. A Smart Car is sensitive and requires regular maintenance, you know, just like any other type of car.

  • VIN: WMEEJ31X89K
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When starting the car, the transmission will not respond to the shifter being put into any gear. A computer diagnostic says it is a communications issue. Mercedes, who sold the car to me new, refuses to do any repair work as they have discontinued Smart sales in the US. If the communications for the transmission fails during operation, this will be very dangerous. There are numerous reports on the internet of similar issues and owners trying to repair this themselves. Mercedes needs to be forced to repair what they have sold and represented. If this is a software update issue, who has the software to fix this issue? It is outrageous that NHTSA has not enforced these issues with Mercedes Benz of America.

  1. Khalid Fadel 2025-06-17

    Vehicle year: 2011

Congratulations on your new car purchase! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying driving it around town and that it's easy to park. It sounds like it's a great fit for your needs as a second vehicle. While it may not have the same utility as a larger car, it's perfect for running errands and carrying one person around. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Gillian Schiller 2025-06-15

    Vehicle year: 2015

As a teacher, I was delighted to take advantage of the extra discount and generous trade-in offer for my 10-year old New Beetle. I have to say, the car has been a lot more fun to drive than I expected. However, I do agree with other reviewers that leaving it in pure auto mode can result in a less-than-ideal ride. Even in 'manual' mode, shifting from 1st to 2nd can be a bit of a drag. The little engine can struggle on hills and inclines, but it drops seamlessly into 4th with an easy pull of the shift lever. I've been pleasantly surprised by the gas mileage, which has been better than advertised. While there is plenty of vertical room, I do find that my legs end up jammed against the door and shifter when in 'manual' mode. Additionally, the seats could be more comfortable, which makes me a bit hesitant about taking long trips.

    Vehicle year: 2008

Since I have owned this car, I have experienced a number of issues such as the battery dying within the first year, random pieces of plastic falling off, numerous transmission problems, and the engine blowing at 23,000 miles. Currently, I am experiencing another transmission problem where the car won't shift out of Park when it is cold. I have shared my experience with others, including the dealership staff, and hope to find a solution soon.

  5. Andy Koepp 2025-05-12

    Vehicle year: 2008

At only 58000 miles, my car is in need of a valve job after having to replace the fuel injectors. Unfortunately, my previous experiences with Smart have not been positive, as every time I bring my car in for service, something else seems to break. Despite this, I am confident in their ability to diagnose and fix the low compression issue in cylinder #2, even if it requires removing the engine and performing a valve job without changing the guides. While they have suggested replacing the head, I trust that they will find the best solution for my car. Although I have experienced issues with the reverse shift in the past, I am hopeful that Smart will be able to help me resolve this problem. Thank you for your assistance with my car.

You will either love it or, if it's not for you, hate it. True smart lovers are a class unto themselves.

  2. Van Hickle 2025-06-18

This car is amazing for commuting to work! It's so much fun to drive, like a go-cart. My wife loves driving it on the weekends too. The upright seating makes it feel roomy like a pickup truck, and it's so durable that flying rocks won't even dent it. Plus, with 10,000 miles between oil changes and consistent gas mileage of 42 mpg in Minneapolis (worst was 38 mpg in deep slushy snow), it's incredibly efficient. My commute involves both freeway driving at 80mph and navigating downtown congestion for a total of 60 miles per day, but this car makes it easy to park and maneuver. In some states, you can even park straight into the curb (no parallel parking required) and share parking spaces with motorcycles or other smart cars. The plastic panels resist rust and you can even change the car's color in about 4 hours. Overall, this is a very tough little car with great acceleration!

  3. Rickey Hilpert 2025-06-17

    Vehicle year: 2009

We received our first Smart Car in January 2008, shortly after they were released. We were so impressed with it that we decided to keep the one we ordered as well. We drove both cars from Texas to California and encountered no issues with hills, dust storms, rain, or gas. We were able to fill both cars with one bill at a single pump. The car can easily travel at speeds of 80-85 mph and we have even pushed it to 93 mph. It is incredibly easy to park and has great gas mileage and safety features. We particularly enjoy the heated seats. We have taken it on trips to Las Vegas and Los Angeles and it handles traffic with ease. It's an absolute blast!

I recently switched from owning a mini-van for 18 years to a Smart car, and I couldn't be happier! At first, I was a bit nervous about downsizing, but after driving it for just two days, I fell in love with it. I find myself looking for any excuse to go out and drive it. I even managed to fit everything from my first trip to Costco, despite still having two 17-year-olds at home. I love all the attention I get while driving it and am even trying to convince my husband to get one for his commute to work!

    - This car is surprisingly roomy for its size and feels like a full-size car. There is also good storage space in the back. The outside look and shape are cute, while the inside decor is unusual and fun. Although marketed as a city car, it performs great on the highway. The turbo lag is a bit of a problem, but it has great acceleration. However, the turbo lag can be dangerous in situations where smooth instantaneous acceleration is needed, such as merging from a stop or starting on a curve. The car drives at highway speeds (70+) like a full-size car and has good power, requiring less downshifting when going uphill compared to bigger cars. The cruise control is excellent and hardly ever shifts to maintain speed. U-turns are amazing and too fun, and parking is a breeze as it fits in very small places. Although it appears to be a full-size car from the front and rear, the driver must keep the small size in mind at all times. The brakes are good but don't come on smoothly. Constant road noise can be a problem for some, but it can be ignored or tuned out. The ride is good on smooth pavement but rough on rough roads like a one-ton pickup. Overall, this car is a great choice for those who prioritize maneuverability, acceleration, shifting, highway driving, cabin space, and fuel economy. However, it is important to keep in mind the turbo lag, road noise, ride on rough surfaces, and high insurance cost.
