1997 Lincoln Mark viii problems
The Lincoln Mark VIII is a grand touring luxury sport coupe that was marketed by Lincoln from the 1993 to 1998 model years. The first generation of the Mark series branded entirely as a Lincoln, the Mark VIII again served as a counterpart of the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar. Though maintaining its traditional brand rivalry with the Cadillac Eldorado, the Mark VIII was also developed to become more competitive against luxury coupes from automakers around the world.
Replacing the Fox platform of the Mark VII, the Mark VIII was the exclusive model to use the FN10 chassis, a derivative of the MN12 platform developed for the Thunderbird and Cougar. Growing slightly in size (primarily in wheelbase), the Mark VIII was developed with independent suspension for all four wheels; at the time, the only other rear-wheel drive American cars to do so (alongside the Thunderbird and Cougar) were the Chevrolet Corvette and Dodge Viper RT/10. Matching the Cadillac Northstar engine, the Mark VIII was fitted with a dual-overhead cam 4.6L V8, the first Ford Motor Company vehicle fitted with such an engine.
Through its six-year production run, the Mark VIII was manufactured by Ford at its Wixom Assembly Plant (Wixom, Michigan). As of current production, the model line is the final generation of the Mark series and Lincoln has not introduced a direct successor to the model line ever since its 1998 discontinuation.

Common 1997 Lincoln Mark viii problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII, several common problems have been identified:
- Exterior Issues:
- Owners have reported problems with the headlights, control arm, and ball joints. Some have mentioned difficulties finding replacement headlights, impacting their ability to drive at night. The exterior issues seem to be a significant concern for Mark VIII owners, affecting the functionality and safety of the vehicle.
- Coolant Temp Sensor:
- Complaints include issues with the coolant temp sensor, specifically a 116 trouble code indicating no voltage detected at the sensor. This can lead to running rough and hesitation in the vehicle. Replacing the sensor resolved the issue for some owners, highlighting the importance of diagnosing and addressing sensor-related problems promptly.
- Throttle Position Sensor and Crank Position Sensor:
- Problems related to the throttle position sensor and crank position sensor have been reported. These sensors play crucial roles in the engine's performance and can cause significant issues if malfunctioning. Proper diagnostic testing is recommended to identify and address any sensor-related issues accurately.
- Air Suspension:
- The active airbag suspension system in the Lincoln Mark VIII has been noted for providing a smooth ride. However, complaints about air suspension failure have been reported, leading to concerns about the system's reliability. Addressing air suspension issues promptly is essential to maintain the vehicle's ride quality and safety.
- Transmission Issues:
- The transmission, specifically the 4r70w, has been highlighted for problems with the 1-2 accumulator spring breaking, causing harsh shifting. Additionally, heat issues have been noted across all models, emphasizing the importance of installing a transmission cooler and using the recommended transmission fluid to prevent overheating and transmission damage.
- Headlight Quality:
- The base model's headlights have been criticized for being inadequate, with low beams described as extremely dim. This issue can impact nighttime visibility and overall safety while driving. Some solutions involve baking the headlights to re-coat them for improved brightness.
These common problems reported by owners of the 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII highlight various issues ranging from exterior concerns to sensor malfunctions and transmission issues. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnostic testing and timely repairs is crucial to maintaining the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall reliability.

EACH MONTH, THEY CHECK THEIR DATA BASE, AND LEARN THAT THE REPLACEMENT KIT, COSTING HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS, HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK A MONTH BEFORE IT WILL BE AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT TARGET DATE OF AVAILABILITY IS OCTOBER 2007. SO, FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW, I HAVE A LINCOLN THAT CANNOT BE DRIVEN AT NIGHT, NOR CAN IT BE REPAIRED AT ANY PRICE. I WROTE A LETTER TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY EARLY IN 2007 ABOUT THIS, AND RECEIVED A FORM LETTER TELLING TO GO TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER FOR PARTS. *JB

I bought my 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII in October of last year as my very first car. Many people were surprised that I was able to get such a nice car as my first, but I absolutely love it! The body design is beautiful, with large xenon headlights for extra visibility and a slight tire hump across the trunk lid that pays homage to earlier Mark VIII models. Inside, mine has heated seats, which are very rare, and I really appreciate the message center that provides at-a-glance information on many features and settings. Overall, I think these cars are fantastic and a joy to drive.
Moshe D'Amore 2025-01-07
When I first bought my car, I had to spend a few dollars on it. However, since then (6 months now), I have not had any problems whatsoever. The 97-98 Mark VIII gives you a feeling that no other car can match. Everywhere I go, people compliment me on my car. It doesn't matter whether they are girls, guys, young or old, they all think that I have a lot of class, power, speed, and taste.
Vinnie Schimmel 2024-11-11
Ford/Lincoln made a fantastic car in the Mark 8.
Gideon Schowalter 2024-11-07
Power and excellent take off acceleration. This car is a great choice if you're looking to add performance items. While it may not be the best when it comes to handling in corners and curves due to the softness of the air bag suspension, it does squat and go when you want it to. I am currently selling a '97 and am on the lookout for a low mileage '98 in excellent shape. I think this car looks great on me!
Arnaldo Cormier 2024-11-04
I bought this car from a private owner. After adding a few items for looks, the engine and ride are both great. I find that new cars are often too small and not built to withstand a bad accident. When I retired, I dreamed of having a large car, but there were none available. I was lucky to find an older car in such great condition. It's not perfect, but after one hundred thousand miles, it's still all original and in great shape.
