The Nissan Leaf (Japanese: 日産・リーフ, Hepburn: Nissan Rīfu), stylized as "LEAF," is a battery-electric powered compact car manufactured by Nissan, produced since 2010 across two generations. It has been offered exclusively as a 5-door hatchback. The term "LEAF" serves as a backronym to leading environmentally-friendly affordable family car.

The Leaf was unveiled on 1 August 2009 as the world's first mass market electric and zero-emission vehicle. Among other awards and recognition, it received the 2010 Green Car Vision Award, the 2011 European Car of the Year, the 2011 World Car of the Year, and the 2011–2012 Car of the Year Japan. A second-generation Leaf was introduced in October 2017. The Leaf's range on a full charge has been steadily increased from 117 km (73 miles) to 364 km (226 miles) (EPA rated) by the use of larger battery packs and several minor improvements.

Global sales across both generations totalled 577,000 by February 2022. As of September 2021, European sales totalled more than 208,000, and as of December 2021, over 165,000 had been sold in the U.S., and 157,000 in Japan. The Leaf was the world's all-time top selling plug-in electric car until it was surpassed in early 2020 by the Tesla Model 3.

Common 2016 Nissan Leaf problems

The Nissan Leaf, a popular electric vehicle (EV), has been known for its ease of maintenance and lower degradation rates in newer models. However, some common problems have been reported by owners across different model years.

One of the most common issues is battery degradation, which is particularly prevalent in early model years like the 2014 and 2015 redesigns. These models have very high rates of battery degradation, with a 23% battery degradation rate after six years in the 2014 model year.

Another common problem is the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system issues, which have been reported in some Nissan vehicles of the same era. This problem can cause the brakes to apply out of nowhere, even when there isn't an obstacle ahead.

Power inverter failure is another issue that has been reported in some Nissan Leaf models. This problem can cause the vehicle to shut down completely without any warning.

Driving range diminishment during low temperatures is also a common problem in the Nissan Leaf. This issue can set back the driving range by as much as 47% in some 2013 models during cold weather.

Faulty automatic braking systems caused by outdated software have been reported in some 2011-2017 Leaf models. This problem can cause the brakes to apply out of nowhere, even when there isn't an obstacle ahead.

Nissan Leaf owners have reported that the battery life of early model years is poor, mainly because their batteries aren't liquid-cooled. Liquid cooling is a technology that uses coolants, like water, ethylene glycol, and refrigerant, to keep the battery cool. This helps an electric car optimize its performance in terms of battery life and range.

Some 2011-2017 Leaf models have had issues with the inverter, which can cause the vehicle to shut down completely without any warning. Nissan has issued recalls for some model year vehicles, citing the inverter as a common cause of the concern.

The driving range of EVs tends to diminish by about 20% during cold weather. However, for some 2013 Leafs, low temperatures can set back their driving range by as much as 47%.

Legal action has been considered by some Leaf owners due to Nissan's inability or unwillingness to repair battery degradation issues.

In summary, the Nissan Leaf is a solid electric vehicle, but it isn't perfect. Some common problems include battery degradation, AEB system issues, power inverter failure, driving range diminishment during low temperatures, faulty automatic braking systems, and poor battery life in early model years. However, newer models have improved and suffer from lower degradation rates in their first year.

What is the most common problem of Nissan Leaf?

Most Common Nissan LEAF Problems

  • Nissan LEAF Battery Degradation.
  • Problems with the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) System.
  • Power Inverter Failure.
  • Diminished Range During Low Temperatures.

How long will a 2016 Nissan Leaf last?

Generally, you should expect the Nissan Leaf to last for around ten years. Because electric car batteries last so long, many outlast other components of the car, so you might get a new car before your battery's condition becomes an issue.

What are the weaknesses of the Nissan Leaf?

Cons

  • Limited small-item storage.
  • The back seats don't fold flat.
  • Less range than many other EVs.
  • The Leaf's type of fast-charging port isn't widely supported.

Does the Nissan Leaf have battery problems?

More Leaf owners with battery problems say Nissan has abandoned them. As more Nissan EV owners come forward to say they feel abandoned by the automaker and its failure to supply replacement batteries for the Leaf, one lawyer with a firm specializing in class actions says there might be a case.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-08
  • VIN: 1N4BZ0CP0GC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: On March 8, 2023, my 2016 NISSAN LEAF main EV battery failed at 75% charge power going up an incline on the freeway. The car shut down in the center lane with no warning at 60mph and could not be moved or shifted to be driven off the freeway. The car is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of others was put at EXTREME risk. I could have been killed or rear ended. I called 911 for the highway patrol and a county or city tow truck got me off the freeway. Previously, the main EV battery was diagnosed by the dealer as dropping in capacity to 8 bars in December 2022. I was told the car was safe to drive still although they did put in a warranty claim for a new battery which I was told was on back order and could take up to one year. Yet, I was told the car was 100% safe and drove it from December 2022 until this week. After the March 8 incident I had the car towed immediately to the dealer repair facility and the dealer service again confirmed the battery was compromised and told me not to drive the car anymore. So far NISSAN corporate has not asked to inspect the vehicle. The only warning the car gave was it was having a loss of power going up hills from December 2022 to this week but the car never showed a warning or gave a warning light on the dash.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-27
  • VIN: 1N4BZ0CP9GC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Car shifted into neutral at highway speeds and would not go back into drive on 3 separate occasions over the past 6 days. Car is an EV and there was no warning and the battery SOC was 50% or more on all occasions. Can can be shifted from neutral to park only, not drive or reverse. Very unsafe to have to cruise to a stop on busy highways without much or any shoulder depending on where the car stops with snow banks. Had to have car towed. The incidents happened separately on 1/27, 1/28, and 2/2 all on the highway at ~60mph. I will upload some pictures of the dtc codes and battery stats for the vehicle. After the incident on 1/27, I replaced my 12v battery with a new one (having done some searching for possible cause), but the issue happened again on 1/28 and 2/2 after the 12v replacement.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-21
  • VIN: 1N4BZ0CP9GC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We were driving the car on a highway (the 405 in Los Angeles) in the midafternoon on December 21. We were going uphill and in the flow of traffic. I'd say the speed was about 60-65. The car was functioning well. Then, the driver accelerated to pass a car and suddenly the car lost all power and went into neutral. Fortunately, we made our way to the freeway shoulder without an accident. But, it could have been very different, as we were on a fast-moving highway and there could have been a pile-up. The car had plenty of battery power (around 47 miles) but it would not shift back into drive. We turned the car on and off and it was stuck in neutral. A tow truck came by and suggested a jump start. That worked and we took the car immediately to a Nissan dealership. The dealership found an error code (I believe it's P3398 but I am unsure) and says that a part of the lithium battery is malfunctioning and the car is unsafe to drive. It is under warranty but they say they are unable to replace the battery for many months. I saw no warning lamps prior to the failure (apart from a recurring message about tire maintenance that we had addressed repeatedly). For what it is worth, I had just had the brake pads checked that morning at a local mechanic who said the brakes were in excellent shape.

THE NEXT MORNING, 5/20, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER, AND HAD THE CERTIFIED LEAF TECHNICIAN TRY TO PLUG IT IN AND CHECK THE CHARGING. HE FOUND RESISTANCE AS HE TRIED TO PLUG IT IN, LOOKED AT THE DISTORTED PLASTIC, AND SAID "YOU NEED TO REPLACE THAT PORT" IT'S JUNE 1ST TODAY; THE DEALER SAID THEY HAD TO CONTACT NISSAN. AFTER A WEEK OF NO RESPONSE OR CALLBACK, I FINALLY WAS TOLD THAT WE MUST HAVE DAMAGED IT, AND IT WOULDN'T BE COVERED. THEY HAD NO BASIS FOR THAT ASSERTION, AND THEY OFFERED NO EXPLANATION OR ADVICE ABOUT THE DAMAGE ON THE PORT. I'VE CONTACTED NISSAN CUSTOMER SERVICE, WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM NISSAN WARRANTY DIVISION. IN THE MEAN TIME, I'M CHARGING WITH THE CHADEMO PORT WHENEVER POSSIBLE, AND STILL USING THE J-1772, ALTHOUGH WITH NO EXPLANATION OF WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM I FEEL LIKE IT'S A RISK EVERY TIME. OBVIOUSLY THE CHARGING IS BASIC FOR THE VEHICLE'S FUNCTION.

(Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, Infiniti customer service at 1-888-833-3216 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

Negative 2016 Nissan Leaf car reviews

  1. Henry Bruen 2024-07-28

The range promised did not match the range delivered. When driving at 65 mph, the range is only 45 miles before needing to search for a charging station. This may not meet the expectations of some drivers. It is important to consider your driving needs before making a purchase. While this car may not be suitable for long distance travel, it may be a good option for short commutes. It is important to do your research and consider all options before making a decision. We understand that this may have been a difficult experience for you, and we hope that you are able to find a vehicle that meets your needs in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that Nissan is replacing your battery free of charge, even though it's only down to 70 percent and it's still under warranty for 100,000 miles. I understand that you dropped off your car back in August and are still waiting for the battery, but I'm glad to hear that they've provided you with a loaner car during this time. Hang in there, and hopefully you'll have your car back soon!

Positive 2016 Nissan Leaf car reviews

**UPDATE** I have been driving my Leaf for about 5 and a half years now, and have covered around 62,000 miles. I am happy to report that the battery degradation is still at 10 out of 12 bars. On a 60-degree day, with a full battery, I can travel approximately 68-70 miles. The maintenance cost has been very low, and I have not had any repairs in the last few years. One thing to note is that my 14 and 17-year-old kids do not like the Leaf because they think it looks dorky and uncool. However, I still find it beautiful. On an unrelated note, the resale value of my Leaf remains low due to its low battery capacity compared to newer EVs with much more range. Despite this, I will have paid it off this December 2020, and it is still ultra-efficient, ultra-low cost to maintain, ultra-reliable, and beautiful to my eyes. : ) **UPDATE** My Leaf has been my primary daily-driver for almost 5 years now, and I am still very pleased with it. I rarely encounter any issues, and the last time I had a problem was probably 2-3 years ago. One thing to note is that the battery degradation has gone down to 10 out of 12 bars, which means that when I am 100% charged, my range is approximately 72 miles. Although I have Just wanted to share my experience with my Leaf! I've driven it for around 41K miles and even though it's been 3-4 years since I wrote this, I still get around 72 miles on a full battery on a 60 degree day. While I didn't buy it for environmental reasons, I have to say that the financial and efficiency aspects of this car are truly amazing. I received rebates from my local Nissan dealership, the federal government, the state of Texas, and even Austin Energy for a home charging station. Plus, with an average mixed hwy/city driving, it gets the equivalent of 115 mpg! Overall, I'm extremely happy with my Leaf and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cost-effective and eco-friendly option.

Hi there! Just wanted to let you know that the price of Go Green gas will soon be over $3.

  4. Abel Tillman 2024-09-16

I really appreciate this car. The mileage range is not a problem for my regular weekly commutes and there are plenty of charging stations near all the places I go when the weekend comes. I won't have to buy gas again unless it's for my generator in case of a power outage. If someone complains about this car, they probably didn't do enough research to meet their needs, so it's not fair to say anything negative. This car does exactly what it advertises. It's a brilliant car!

The 2016 Nissan Leaf Electric is a great car! If you're able to take advantage of the subsidized charging rate, you can cut your fuel costs in half. Plus, the regenerative brakes are a wonderful feature!
