Nissan Cube problems
The Nissan Cube is a mini MPV produced by carmaker Nissan between 1998 and 2019. Initially sold only in Japan, the Cube was sold in North American markets from 2009 to 2014, and in European markets from 2009 to 2011. In Japan, it was exclusive to Nissan Red Stage dealerships. It is a slightly larger load-carrying alternative to the Nissan Micra hatchback. While production for the North American market ended in 2014, the Japanese-market Cube lasted until December 2019.
First generation (Z10; 1998)
The first-generation Cube was introduced in 1998. It shared the same platform as the Nissan Micra (known as the March in Japan and Southeast Asia), as well as the same 1.3 L inline-four engine. A continuously variable transmission and four-wheel drive were optional. The Cube covered the gap in the Nissan lineup between the March and the Sunny.
Second generation (Z11; 2002)
The second-generation Cube was released in 2002 with a larger interior than the previous model. The combination of angled and curved surfaces was based on the third-generation Micra/March, powered by a 1.4 L I4 engine. The model included the "e4WD" system as an option, which transfers power to the rear wheels when the front wheels spin via a small electric motor on the rear underside of the floor. The electrically powered system allows for reduced drivetrain drag in FWD mode. A slightly longer three row model, the Cube Cubic (stylized as Cube³) went on sale in September 2003.
When equipped with a CVT, the steering wheel button controls and the sport wheel button on the dash panel are located next to the hazard flasher switch. In mid-2005, the cube had an optional upgrade with the new HR-series 1.5 L engine from the Nissan Tiida.
All Cube models have optional extras including an Ion filter (Air Ioniser) for cleaning the air and Nissan's 'smart key' which allows the driver to enter the car without having to use a key. Other options include a sunroof, 12 different styles of front grille and satellite navigation. Other specific models also have different styles of bodykits and fender flares. They come with optional 14 or 15 inch wheels and the Autech versions (Rider, Cube3 and GT models) with chrome styling and special seat covering.
The second-generation Cube was imported and sold in Malaysia by Mitsuoka as the M-Box and later the MPV. This model was different from other Mitsuoka models in that it had no major differences to the original car, and simply had a different grille and a couple of other exterior parts. The M-Box and MPV were exclusive to Malaysia.

- Summary: Problem is the anti theft module located on the steering column has malfunctioned for my wife’s 2010 Nissan Cube keyless ignition. Vehicle would not restart for my wife after sitting for 5 hours, luckily she was not way off somewhere. From what I’ve seen Nissan did a recall of a similar defective module on other models but did not include the Cube. Nissan doesn’t even have the parts readily available for repair. Vehicle has been sitting at a repair shop for over a month now. This should be a safety issue as it could leave people totally stranded in the middle of nowhere with no meaningful way to repair the vehicle. The part number of the module is 487001 FA0C. It is believed that Nissan did not recall the Cube because of the low quantity of vehicles manufactured in relation to the other problem models.

- Summary: On March 24, 2023 Friday, I was picking my child up when I noticed a loss of power and acceleration at the gas pedal. This was then followed by a loud, whining sound while in traffic. Luckily, we were not hit when the car lost power. I am mechanically inclined, and was able to deduct that the car went into limp mode. After further research, it is determined that the CVT transmission failed. This could have caused serious injuries to myself, my child, or whoever it may have impacted our vehicle, because of how it lost acceleration While in transit. Vehicle currently has 141,554 miles and it is a 2011 Nissan cube why does the recall affect 2009, 2010, it skips 2011 and then proceeds to carry-on from 2012 on up? What sense does this make , since it’s the same transmission in all of these vehicles? I am contacting Nissan USA to file a complaint, I have also confirmed this with an OBD two scanner. Today’s date is March 27, 2023.

Then a little while later, the fuel level will appear normal. And this cycle will repeat many times before the tank is actually below 1/4 tank full, based on both mileage and the "normal" fuel level.

- Summary: ABS light came on, I checked on the internet to see what the problem might be and came up with a number of reasons, the last being have it checked ASAP. Took the car to my repair shop to have it checked. Found code C1116 stop lamp circuit was the problem, which I had fixed.When I picked up the car, I was told that getting the part wasn't difficult because it was a common problem. They also told me that my brake lights wouldn't work because of the circuit problem. In my opinion, this is a safety concern; if your brake lights aren't working how can anyone behind you know your intention to slow down or stop . What's more, how am I to know that my rear brake lights are not working? I'm in the cabin driving and unless I am alerted by another driver behind me, what am I to do?

- Summary: For a couple weeks on & off it’s been not wanting to go when I step on gas. I remember this doing same sort of thing before Allen web supposedly replaced my transmission as it was one of millions that are faulty as is one they put in 2018 only has 18,000 miles on tbis supposed replaced transmission & it’s in a mechanic shop as I write this a waiting on hopefully Nissan paying for this faulty transmission. I shouldn’t have to buy one when it’s only got 18,000 miles on it. I’ve almost been rear ended due to This ongoing problem. People behind me are ready to go when light turns green. I floor my gas pedal & it does nothing . Have to Hurry put my flashers on pray to God no one hits me & flag everyone to go around. I turn car off put I park first of course , wait few seconds & sometimes it thankfully goes into gear & i baby it rest of way as I don’t want to make it worse by flooring my gas pedal. I’m very careful & pray I make it rest my way to work or home whichever the case . I barely made it to work other day. My friend thankfully had my Nissan Cube towed to a shop as it turns out it in fact had all same codes as before they supposedly put newer one in P1778 p0868 P0725, p0746 & so on transmission CVT TRANSMISSION FAILURE! $2,935 plus other huge problem totaling $4,431 ! I definitely shouldn’t have to be dealing with any of this again!! I don’t drive far to work, had surgery as well so didn’t drive many places for a bit this is why only gone 18,000 miles in 4 years. I called auto mall Nissan & asked about my warranty they told me it’s expired! For only 18,000 miles put in it that’s ridiculous! Hwy robbery! Talk about a lemon again. Could of been smashed up by a truck being behind me a lot of things could of happened endangering myself as well as drivers behind me & behind those people. Plus dangerous being on side of road waiting to see if it’s gonna go into gear again or not! I understand things wear out but this transmission should be good thousands of miles!

- Summary: I was washing my car by hand and I was washing the driver's side rear view mirror and pivoted it away from the normal position so I could clean it better. When put it back to it's normal position, the hinge broke. When I looked closely at the hinge, I noticed that the hinge pretty much disintegrated, so it was just a matter of time before it broke. It could've broken off on the highway and been blown off, possibly damaging the vehicle or another vehicle, as the mirror was only hanging by the wires at that point. Also you can't drive a car without a driver's side mirror. I removed the mirror after I got done washing the car, so it wouldn't fall off and hit the car. I then ordered replacements for both the driver's side and passenger's side outside mirrors, including both the plain matte black covers, and the pre-primed covers, as I don't have to rush in getting the pre-primed covers painted to match the covers on the old mirrors. I attached the invoice for the replacements. The invoice doesn't include the cost of having the covers painted. I don't think the probably needs somebody else to confirm it, as the mirror is clearly separated from the bracket. The passenger's side mirror is showing the signs of starting to disintegrate, and both mirrors are available for inspection. Nobody else has inspected the mirrors. I tried to let the manufacturer know about it, but my email to them was bounced back as undeliverable. There were no symptoms of the problem prior to failure. The pictures of the mirror on the workbench are of the driver's side mirror, while the pictures of the mirror on the car are of the passenger's side mirror. I also included a picture of the odometer reading.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the Toyota XB, Hundai Tuson, and Kia Soul. After careful consideration, I found that the Cube was the best option for me. It's a fantastic choice if you're looking for a 100% Japan-made econo utility vehicle with great functionality. The Cube is perfect for commuting and long-distance travel, and while the wind can get a bit turbulent and the front end feels light above 80 mph, this is common for most econo-vehicles. Let's be honest, you can't expect a 15 to 20 K$ car to drive like a BMW at 80 mph. I think sometimes people can be too critical when it comes to value vs. quality. It's important to remember that this car was made in Japan for 10 years before coming to the states. It's a small multi-purpose vehicle that gets 30 mpg on regular gas, making it a great choice for the US. Thanks for reading!

We absolutely love our Cube! We never expected it to be the perfect fit for our family of two adults and one pre-preschooler. While our neighbors are driving around in mini vans or gas-guzzling SUVs, we feel like we have the secret car that no one ever thought to buy. The styling is super fun, and the interior is surprisingly roomy (the tall ceilings make it feel bigger than our small SUV did inside). Plus, the gas mileage is crazy good! We've owned the car for about 6 months now with no major complaints. There have been 2 voluntary recalls, but they were no problem at all and pretty typical of first-year model cars. There are a few quirks we'd change, but no more than any other car we've had.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Soul and Cube. After doing a drive comparison, I found that the Cube was the clear winner in terms of drive-ability, control, comfort, headroom, and overall feel of the car. Plus, I absolutely love the look of it - other 'cubers' even wave at you! The in and out drivers seat level is perfect for me due to a bad hip. Although my car began its life as a rental and had a salvage title, I've owned it for over five years and have never had an issue with it. I make sure to keep up with maintenance. It's such a shame that Japan is no longer exporting the Cube to the U.S. - it's the perfect car for me and I would buy another in a heartbeat! The only downside is that the light weight and boxy shape means you can feel strong cross winds on the road. Thanks for listening!

Cube is a unique car with a spacious interior, comfortable seats, and cool features. It's hard to describe the Cube, but once you experience it, you'll love it. I recently got mine and I'm absolutely thrilled with it. I traded in my Mini Cooper convertible, which had a rough ride, and I'm now getting over 32 miles per gallon. The hatchback and drop-down rear seat make storage a breeze. The Cube is a winner and being square has never been cooler!

I absolutely fell in love with the Cube at first sight! Its unique design wrapped with many glasses is simply stunning. I had to choose between the SL model and Krom, and although my favorite color is scarlet red, unfortunately, it wasn't available in the Krom edition. However, I'm still very happy with my steel Grey Krom edition because it's fully loaded with features like push button ignition, rear view monitor, front fascia and grille, rear roof spoiler, aluminum-trimmed pedals, and USB connectivity (iPod®- compatible)! The Cube looks very unique and cute, and it's incredibly roomy. The performance is even better than my old Matrix XR, especially the tight turning radius. It's so much fun to drive, and I've received many compliments on it.

The switch under the brake pedal that starts my cube burnt out, so it had to be replaced. Unfortunately, during my admission test on 06-21-2100, my cube failed due to poor quality control from the Nissan manufacturers in Japan. It was discovered that the plug needed for the test was left off my car. As a retired employee of Nissan of North America Smyrna, Tennessee, I paid 15,000.00 dollars of my retirement lump sum for this car. It is disappointing to see such a lack of attention to detail in the manufacturing process.

Please visit the Nissan Consumer Affairs website and read the article about the extended warranty on their vehicles with CVT transmissions. It has been brought to their attention that some of these transmissions have been failing since 2003, starting with the Rogue. Unfortunately, my 2010 Cube's transmission failed after only two years of ownership. Nissan declined to replace the transmission, leaving me with the option of either paying $4000 for a replacement or purchasing a new car. Nissan has not issued a recall for the CVTs, citing that it is not a safety concern. However, my children and I were frightened when we were almost hit in traffic due to the transmission failure. I am disappointed with Nissan's customer service and the quality of their cars. I hope that Nissan will take responsibility for this issue and provide better service to their customers in the future.

We purchased this car three years ago with approximately 55,000 miles on it for $13,000 after taxes. At the time, it was one of the most affordable Cube SLs available in the state, based on my extensive research. It has served us well for a couple of years, with a gas mileage of around 30 mpg. Although it has an unusual appearance, it makes it unique and really stands out. The car has a plethora of airbags, making it an excellent value for the price. However, we have encountered some issues. Like most modern cars, everything is electronic, including the push start, which I like. Unfortunately, Nissan has a significant problem with the Electronic Steering Column Lock, which is a concern. Once it locks, the only way to fix it is to replace it, and this is a job that requires a Nissan dealer. Prior to 2010, this was a recall on many of Nissan's vehicles, but not for the 2010 model. Ultimately, the car does not recognize that your key is in the car and it locks the steering column. It is unclear why they even added this feature, or at least make the steering column lock manual like most cars. The car had to be towed, which cost $150, and the repair was $800. Another common issue with cubes is the back door latch, which is also electronic. Even though it made the click as it was being unlocked, it stayed locked. This is something you could fix yourself if you know what you're doing, but ultimately this results in you (or the dealer) having to bust the lock open, which results in the need for a brand new lock. We decided not to worry about it. From what I researched, this was a $500 fix. We'd rather deal with a locked door than put another $500 into the car. Fortunately, after a week or so, the door started working. Due to these issues, we are uncertain about the car's reliability and how long it will last.The engine and transmission have been great so far with no issues. The A/C is insanely cold and the interior space is fantastic. However, there seem to be some electronic issues that are just too much.

Hello, I am writing regarding Case #29057140. Unfortunately, my Cube with 52,000 miles could not be started due to the well-documented steering column lock issue. After a delay of several weeks, my mechanic was able to repair it just waiting for the part from Nissan. I then requested reimbursement under service bulletin NTB11-057. However, I spent a week playing a 'customer service' dance. Despite being promised a 'goodwill review', I received a blanket denial of coverage from a csr who stated that a service bulletin only covers one replacement, which was supposedly done in 2011. While it is possible that the lock was replaced, it failed again, so what difference does that make? I am unclear why Nissan would refuse to replace a defective part, especially when it is for a major operational system that affects customer safety. Does Nissan really not care if a woman gets stuck in a parking lot at 11 PM because her Cube won't start when the steering column lock fails without warning? Instead of fooling around with faux phone calls and emails masquerading as customer service, Nissan should just say they don't care if people buy their cars or not. I love my Cube, but this experience with Nissan is a deal breaker. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
