Nissan Cube problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Cube is a mini MPV produced by carmaker Nissan between 1998 and 2019. Initially sold only in Japan, the Cube was sold in North American markets from 2009 to 2014, and in European markets from 2009 to 2011. In Japan, it was exclusive to Nissan Red Stage dealerships. It is a slightly larger load-carrying alternative to the Nissan Micra hatchback. While production for the North American market ended in 2014, the Japanese-market Cube lasted until December 2019.

First generation (Z10; 1998)

The first-generation Cube was introduced in 1998. It shared the same platform as the Nissan Micra (known as the March in Japan and Southeast Asia), as well as the same 1.3 L inline-four engine. A continuously variable transmission and four-wheel drive were optional. The Cube covered the gap in the Nissan lineup between the March and the Sunny.

Second generation (Z11; 2002)

The second-generation Cube was released in 2002 with a larger interior than the previous model. The combination of angled and curved surfaces was based on the third-generation Micra/March, powered by a 1.4 L I4 engine. The model included the "e4WD" system as an option, which transfers power to the rear wheels when the front wheels spin via a small electric motor on the rear underside of the floor. The electrically powered system allows for reduced drivetrain drag in FWD mode. A slightly longer three row model, the Cube Cubic (stylized as Cube³) went on sale in September 2003.

When equipped with a CVT, the steering wheel button controls and the sport wheel button on the dash panel are located next to the hazard flasher switch. In mid-2005, the cube had an optional upgrade with the new HR-series 1.5 L engine from the Nissan Tiida.

All Cube models have optional extras including an Ion filter (Air Ioniser) for cleaning the air and Nissan's 'smart key' which allows the driver to enter the car without having to use a key. Other options include a sunroof, 12 different styles of front grille and satellite navigation. Other specific models also have different styles of bodykits and fender flares. They come with optional 14 or 15 inch wheels and the Autech versions (Rider, Cube3 and GT models) with chrome styling and special seat covering.

The second-generation Cube was imported and sold in Malaysia by Mitsuoka as the M-Box and later the MPV. This model was different from other Mitsuoka models in that it had no major differences to the original car, and simply had a different grille and a couple of other exterior parts. The M-Box and MPV were exclusive to Malaysia.

Common Nissan Cube problems

The Nissan Cube is a compact car that has been produced since 1998. While the car has its share of supporters, it is also known for certain common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most significant problems with the Nissan Cube is transmission issues. The car's continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been the subject of many complaints, with owners reporting failures and other problems. The 2010 Nissan Cube, for example, has been particularly affected by CVT problems, with 10 complaints of transmission failure reported to CarComplaints.com.

Another common problem with the Nissan Cube is steering column lock malfunction. This issue has been reported in the 2009 and 2010 model years, with an average cost to fix of $800 and an average mileage of 68,000 miles. The problem can cause the car to be disabled, making it a significant safety concern.

The car's suspension is also a common source of problems, with owners reporting clunking and creaking noises, particularly when driving over speed bumps or rough surfaces. This problem is most likely due to the coil springs and can be resolved by adjusting them or lifting the weight off the wheels and spinning the coil around to a different position.

The CVT gearbox is known for causing problems and sometimes not even responding when the accelerator is pressed. This can be a very expensive problem to fix, with the usual solution being to fit a replacement gearbox.

In addition to these specific problems, the Nissan Cube is known for being cheaply made, with poor build quality and a transmission that is a significant weak point. The car's unique design and small size can also make it less practical for some drivers, with limited visibility and a high center of gravity that can affect handling and ride comfort.

In conclusion, while the Nissan Cube has its supporters, it is also known for several common problems that can affect its reliability and performance. Transmission issues, steering column lock malfunction, and suspension problems are among the most significant concerns, and the car's build quality and design can also be limitations for some drivers.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-05
  • Date Complaint: 2023-04-10
  • VIN: JN8AZ2KR9AT
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Problem is the anti theft module located on the steering column has malfunctioned for my wife’s 2010 Nissan Cube keyless ignition. Vehicle would not restart for my wife after sitting for 5 hours, luckily she was not way off somewhere. From what I’ve seen Nissan did a recall of a similar defective module on other models but did not include the Cube. Nissan doesn’t even have the parts readily available for repair. Vehicle has been sitting at a repair shop for over a month now. This should be a safety issue as it could leave people totally stranded in the middle of nowhere with no meaningful way to repair the vehicle. The part number of the module is 487001 FA0C. It is believed that Nissan did not recall the Cube because of the low quantity of vehicles manufactured in relation to the other problem models.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-24
  • Date Complaint: 2023-03-27
  • VIN: JN8AZ2KR8BT
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On March 24, 2023 Friday, I was picking my child up when I noticed a loss of power and acceleration at the gas pedal. This was then followed by a loud, whining sound while in traffic. Luckily, we were not hit when the car lost power. I am mechanically inclined, and was able to deduct that the car went into limp mode. After further research, it is determined that the CVT transmission failed. This could have caused serious injuries to myself, my child, or whoever it may have impacted our vehicle, because of how it lost acceleration While in transit. Vehicle currently has 141,554 miles and it is a 2011 Nissan cube why does the recall affect 2009, 2010, it skips 2011 and then proceeds to carry-on from 2012 on up? What sense does this make , since it’s the same transmission in all of these vehicles? I am contacting Nissan USA to file a complaint, I have also confirmed this with an OBD two scanner. Today’s date is March 27, 2023.

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-08-01
  • Date Complaint: 2023-03-14
  • VIN: JN8AZ2KR2AT
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel level readings have been erratic for over 40,000 miles now. Fuel gauge will randomly show the fuel level with less than 1/4 tank left, even though the car has gone less than 100 miles after filling (while the car can travel over 300 miles on a full tank.) Then a little while later, the fuel level will appear normal. And this cycle will repeat many times before the tank is actually below 1/4 tank full, based on both mileage and the "normal" fuel level.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-11
  • Date Complaint: 2022-07-14
  • VIN: JN8AZ2KR1ET
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: ABS light came on, I checked on the internet to see what the problem might be and came up with a number of reasons, the last being have it checked ASAP. Took the car to my repair shop to have it checked. Found code C1116 stop lamp circuit was the problem, which I had fixed. When I picked up the car, I was told that getting the part wasn't difficult because it was a common problem. They also told me that my brake lights wouldn't work because of the circuit problem. In my opinion, this is a safety concern; if your brake lights aren't working how can anyone behind you know your intention to slow down or stop . What's more, how am I to know that my rear brake lights are not working? I'm in the cabin driving and unless I am alerted by another driver behind me, what am I to do?

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-13
  • Date Complaint: 2022-06-15
  • VIN: JN8AZ2KR6AT
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: For a couple weeks on & off it’s been not wanting to go when I step on gas. I remember this doing same sort of thing before Allen web supposedly replaced my transmission as it was one of millions that are faulty as is one they put in 2018 only has 18,000 miles on tbis supposed replaced transmission & it’s in a mechanic shop as I write this a waiting on hopefully Nissan paying for this faulty transmission. I shouldn’t have to buy one when it’s only got 18,000 miles on it. I’ve almost been rear ended due to This ongoing problem. People behind me are ready to go when light turns green. I floor my gas pedal & it does nothing . Have to Hurry put my flashers on pray to God no one hits me & flag everyone to go around. I turn car off put I park first of course , wait few seconds & sometimes it thankfully goes into gear & i baby it rest of way as I don’t want to make it worse by flooring my gas pedal. I’m very careful & pray I make it rest my way to work or home whichever the case . I barely made it to work other day. My friend thankfully had my Nissan Cube towed to a shop as it turns out it in fact had all same codes as before they supposedly put newer one in P1778 p0868 P0725, p0746 & so on transmission CVT TRANSMISSION FAILURE! $2,935 plus other huge problem totaling $4,431 ! I definitely shouldn’t have to be dealing with any of this again!! I don’t drive far to work, had surgery as well so didn’t drive many places for a bit this is why only gone 18,000 miles in 4 years. I called auto mall Nissan & asked about my warranty they told me it’s expired! For only 18,000 miles put in it that’s ridiculous! Hwy robbery! Talk about a lemon again. Could of been smashed up by a truck being behind me a lot of things could of happened endangering myself as well as drivers behind me & behind those people. Plus dangerous being on side of road waiting to see if it’s gonna go into gear again or not! I understand things wear out but this transmission should be good thousands of miles!
Nissan Cube 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-30
  • Date Complaint: 2022-05-31
  • VIN: JN8AZ2KR7AT
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I was washing my car by hand and I was washing the driver's side rear view mirror and pivoted it away from the normal position so I could clean it better. When put it back to it's normal position, the hinge broke. When I looked closely at the hinge, I noticed that the hinge pretty much disintegrated, so it was just a matter of time before it broke. It could've broken off on the highway and been blown off, possibly damaging the vehicle or another vehicle, as the mirror was only hanging by the wires at that point. Also you can't drive a car without a driver's side mirror. I removed the mirror after I got done washing the car, so it wouldn't fall off and hit the car. I then ordered replacements for both the driver's side and passenger's side outside mirrors, including both the plain matte black covers, and the pre-primed covers, as I don't have to rush in getting the pre-primed covers painted to match the covers on the old mirrors. I attached the invoice for the replacements. The invoice doesn't include the cost of having the covers painted. I don't think the probably needs somebody else to confirm it, as the mirror is clearly separated from the bracket. The passenger's side mirror is showing the signs of starting to disintegrate, and both mirrors are available for inspection. Nobody else has inspected the mirrors. I tried to let the manufacturer know about it, but my email to them was bounced back as undeliverable. There were no symptoms of the problem prior to failure. The pictures of the mirror on the workbench are of the driver's side mirror, while the pictures of the mirror on the car are of the passenger's side mirror. I also included a picture of the odometer reading.

Latest negative Nissan Cube car reviews

  1. Tristian Nitzsche 2024-10-19

    Vehicle year: 2013

After owning my car for 5.5 years, I had a bit of a setback when the CVT tranny was ground into pieces at 35,000 miles. However, I must say that NISSAN CORP. treated me very well and I have had no issues before or after that incident. Now at 42,000 miles, I have rekindled my friendship with my car. I always had a crush on it for the first 5 years, and I still do. The circular patterns in the cabin are great and it has as much visual personality as I do. Although I am only 4ft. 10 in., the vision is one of the best. The car rides well in town, getting 26 miles per gallon, and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The only issue I have is that it rides a bit scary on the highway when driving 70-90 mph in higher winds. I am now entering the second stage of my relationship with my cube, and I am hopeful that it will live up to my expectations of longevity. I believe the car holds its resale value pretty well, as the BOX CAR Cult is alive and growing! I have heard it called 'a grocery hauler,' which is a pretty ample description. Although it lags on hills, it is used to Houston flatlands. I am 62.5/f and only average about 3500 miles per year, so I am looking to invest in the best warranty I can get to guarantee the longevity I crave, now that I have no payments and only liability on a fixed income. Overall, I am very happy with my car and I hope to continue driving it for the rest of my Texas Hill Country Driving Life! With all the complaints I have about my car, I often ask myself, 'What do I like about it that makes it the longest car I have ever owned?' I bought it new, so any dents or lack of maintenance are on me. I know where it has been, and there is no water damage. Most importantly, it starts every morning and gets me where I need to be. I appreciate its reliability, but I am also aware of its issues. If it continues to slip around, it could cause problems for me and my cube. However, I am a hard taskmaster and expect a lot for my money. I am not planning on parting with it anytime soon!

  2. Andre Pouros 2024-10-13

Despite having a reservation for a mid-size car with National at Sarasota airport, I was given a Nissan Cube upon arrival. Although it did not match my initial expectations, I decided to make the most of it and ended up driving over 600 miles in it. While the car's appearance may not have been to my taste, I found that Nissan's cvt transmission performed well, despite the car being underpowered. Although there was some wind noise at 75mph, I was able to manage without any issues. While the steering feedback was not as clear as I would have liked, I was still able to navigate the car without any problems. Overall, while the Nissan Cube may not have been my first choice, I was still able to enjoy my time with it and appreciate its unique features.

I agreed to my wife's request for a car with unique styling and better fuel efficiency. The car attracts a lot of attention, which is great because we have our business sign on the back window. Surprisingly, it gets an impressive 30.5mpg, which is a 50% improvement compared to our Pathfinder. This will save us $200 a month on her daily 140-mile roundtrip to her new office. I appreciate many of the features, especially those included in the SL package, although there are some that I am not fond of, as outlined below.

Hi there! Did you know that a four wheel alignment can cost over $1000 if the rear is out of spec? Unfortunately, the Nissan Cube has a non-adjustable rear axle and Nissan will not warrant replacement if it's out of spec. Shims are not approved either. Additionally, rotating tires hides the factory problem and shortens tire life. Hope this helps!

So glad to hear that you're enjoying your Cube! It sounds like it's a great fit for you and your passengers. Plus, getting 33mpg on your first tank of gas is fantastic! The cabin layout and visibility are definitely some of the Cube's strong points. It's great to hear that you find it to be an exceptional value. Keep on enjoying the ride!

I recently purchased a white 2011 Nissan Cube SL and have been driving it for three weeks now. Despite the summer heat, I find myself preferring it over my Miata. The Cube is incredibly comfortable and spacious, making it perfect for long drives with friends or family. The only minor issue I have noticed is the acceleration, which can be a bit slow due to the CVT and electronic components. However, it still performs well on the highway and gets the job done. Compared to my Miata, which feels like a tight-fitting sprinting shoe, the Cube is more like a comfortable pair of flip-flops. It's easy to update and maintain, and the affordability is a huge plus. Every time I drive it, I can't help but smile. It's a shame that this model was discontinued. If you're looking for a unique and affordable four-seater that can comfortably fit four full-sized adults, I highly recommend checking out the remaining Nissan Cubes for sale.

Your car has great gas mileage! It drinks less gas than your former 1994 Honda Civic LX. You only had to put gas in at 250 miles and still had 1/4 tank left. You also have a great view of the hood to map out lanes when driving. However, driving in the wind can be scary as it feels like the tires might give way and makes the car swerve badly. Unfortunately, there are no inside hooks to hang dry cleaning or other stuff and there are less compartments, including no compartments under the seats.

I bought my 2011 Cube in Red, used, when it was about 11 months old, with about 16k miles, for about $14k total. I traded in my 2007 PT Cruiser for the Cube. I absolutely love the look, interior, and headliner! Although I did not get the extras such as 20 color lights, Rockford stereo, better seats, and better ac/heat dial (which I wish I had), it is still a great car! The ride is a bit bumpy (like a truck), and you need to hold the wheel at all times (as it can be shaky and flimsy), BUT after a few months of driving, I was doing about 50 on the interstate and could not avoid a 12-foot piece of wooden fencing. To my surprise, I went right over it without ANY damage or problems! I am a big fan of Nissan, and even though my PT was a much better car, I would definitely buy another Cube!!!!

When I first saw the cube, I thought it looked a little odd, like a shoebox. However, once you step inside, the design is amazing, and the interior is surprisingly spacious. I was initially hesitant to get a brand new car as my first car, but with this car, I have no regrets. It's short, so it's easy to park, and u-turns are a breeze. Additionally, it has excellent visibility, making it an excellent choice for a new driver like me. The safety features are also a great bonus. I highly recommend this car to anyone who wants an eye-catching car that's fun to drive.
