2014 Nissan Altima problems

nissan logo

The Nissan Altima is a mid-size car manufactured by Nissan since 1992. It is a continuation of the Nissan Bluebird line, which began in 1955.

The Altima has historically been larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than the Nissan Sentra but less so than the Nissan Maxima. The first through fourth-generation cars were manufactured exclusively in the United States and officially sold in North and South America, along with the Middle East and Australia. For other markets, Nissan sold a related mid-size sedan called the Nissan Teana which was between the Altima and Maxima in terms of size. In 2013, the Teana became a rebadged version of the fifth-generation Altima.

The name "Altima" was originally applied to a top trim line of the Nissan Leopard for the Japanese market in 1986, and then to the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1992, Nissan discontinued the Stanza which was a Nissan Bluebird clone, replacing it with the US-built Altima, while remaining a compact car. The first Altima was produced in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altima models for the North American market were built in Smyrna, Tennessee, until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant also began producing the model to meet high demand.

Common 2014 Nissan Altima problems

The 2014 Nissan Altima has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include transmission failures, headlight problems, and navigation and infotainment problems.

Transmission failures are a significant concern for 2014 Altima owners. These failures often occur around 70,000 miles and can cost nearly $4,000 to repair, requiring a complete transmission replacement. Symptoms of transmission problems include excessive noise and shuddering while accelerating.

Headlight problems are another common issue for 2014 Altima owners. The headlights may start to dim due to a problem with the housing. Replacing the entire assembly can fix the problem, but it comes at a cost of approximately $650. Nissan has not yet addressed this issue.

Navigation and infotainment problems have also been reported by 2014 Altima owners. The system may freeze up while driving, and replacing the head unit can solve the problem. However, in some cases, the issue may persist even after the replacement. There have been eight recalls for the 2014 Altima, including airbags, the hood latch, and the fuel sending unit.

The fuel sending unit recall is particularly concerning, as fuel leaks can lead to fires in the event of a crash. This issue affects certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine, as well as certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles.

In summary, the 2014 Nissan Altima has several common problems, including transmission failures, headlight issues, and navigation and infotainment problems. These issues can be costly to repair and may pose safety risks. It is essential for 2014 Altima owners to be aware of these problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP8EC
  • Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The rear lower suspension link on our car cracked and completely separated causing the car to be un-drivable. My husband was pulling out of a parking lot with our son and my son’s friend [XXX] and [XXX] old) and the car started fishtailing. We were lucky this happened at a very low rate of speed. The next day my husband would have been on a highway and I’m sure we would be talking about injuries or worse instead of just a tow. Nissan knew about this issue but failed to tell their customers directly of the issue. They extended the warranty to 10 years and unlimited miles but DID NOT inform owners of the defect, warranty extension OR the ability to get it fixed (and Nissan admitted to this that they didn’t have to tell customers). They told us that in midwestern states (we are in Illinois) the rear lower link could rust quicker with the salt and break. There were no warning signs of the issue that we noticed and no one mentioned any issues when we’ve had it in the shop. Nissan however only agreed to pay half of the cost to fix it since we are 4 months past the date of the extended warranty. This is a problem that should have been communicated to us in the first place so we could have had it fixed before it completely separated. The regional specialist who made this decision was completely uncaring when expressing concerns of how this could have had a much worse outcome. We asked for towing to be re-imbursed and for a rental car and both were denied. Rental car we were told was at the dealerships discretion to which they said they would need to get approval from the person who told us the dealership decided that. So we have been without our car for 2 weeks now having to juggle around 2 kids and their activities and our own jobs. We are very lucky that this issue known to Nissan didn’t end in a far worse outcome with injuries to my family. Unfortunately we don’t have the invoice for the repair cost yet as it’s still in the shop. They said it would be around $500. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP8EC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The projector housing in my headlights has been determined to be defective and Nissan was sued because of this. However I have dim headlights on my vehicle which will cost me $1200 to replace and Nissan has told me that I am no longer eligible for a one time replacement. This is unfair in that I was never notified by Nissan about defective headlights which have deteriorated to a point where they are so dim it is unsafe to drive at night.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP2EC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: -The component that malfunctioned is the airbag light for my vehicle, and yes it is available for inspection upon request. -My safety and others are at risk because my airbag may not deploy if I get into an accident. -The manufacturer (at a local Nissan dealership) diagnosed the problem after an inspection, which confirmed it was an airbag light for the driver's seat airbag. There is currently a warning lamp that's turned on. After the dealership's inspection, they turned off the warning lamp, but it turned back on within a month. There were no other symptoms that could have prompted and provoked this warning lamp to be triggered.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-03
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP4EC
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Recently after lending my 2014 Nissan Altima to my daughter to drive out of state she made a turn in a parking lot and the rear lower control arm broke in half. The car was undrivable and had to be towed to a local repair shop. After doing some checking online I found out that Nissan is well aware of the issue and has issued a service bulletin P9324. However, I am very upset as Nissan never mailed out any notices to owners to bring the cars into a nissan dealership and have them inspected, owners were never made aware of the potential problem. Not only that, I live in a state which uses road salt, which their service bulletin says compounds the issue and I was still never notified. Nissan is well aware of the cracking lower control arm issue and had a redesign done in I believe 2018 to eliminate the issue. Additionally, I had the car in at a Nissan dealership 2 weeks before the failure occurred for a different recall issue and I feel there is no excuse for this to at least not have been checked when the car was in at a dealership for service, especially in a road salt use state. Looking back the car was making a clicking noise from the right rear where the control arm broke for the last year and a half only rarely when going over one particular speed bump where I live. Had I been notified by Nissan about the potential issue I immediately would have bought it into a dealer for inspection. Additionally Nissan did extend the warranty on this part but the failure was six months outside of their extended warranty and they will not cover repair expenses either. I strongly feel this breakage could have caused a loss of life if it happened at highway speeds as my daughter informed me the car was completely undrivable when it broke in the parking lot and had to be towed. I am in possession of the failed lower control arm. Once again shame on Nissan for failing to notify owners of this potential hazardous problem.

The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the hood opened by wind flow. The contact stated that the hood latches and the frame under the windshield had been crimped and bent by the hood. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-28
  • VIN: 1N4AL3AP5EC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We have a 2014 Nissan Altima. Last few months it has not been driving right. We have had mechanics look at it with no answer. When the problems got worse, suggestions were made that a new transmission was needed. No one was wanting to work on it at that point. The car finally broke down while at a stoplight and we had to have it towed home. When we went to the bank, we were told that in that timeframe of when 2014 Altima’s were manufactured, a new type of transmission was installed. Then was told after a few years the transmission went bad. I would like to know if there is any truth to this, and if our Altima was a statistic of that.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-29
  • VIN: 1N4AL3APXEC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Headlights don't work properly. I can barely see beyond 2 cars lengths ahead of me unless using full beam. I realize that there was a voluntary recall issued in 2020, however, I am not sure that I was notified. The dealership examined car and noted the reflectors are delaminating, the pattern of which matches that of the recall. Since this is a design flaw I consider Nissan responsible and feel they should replace the headlights at no cost to me. I don't understand why the recall was voluntary and why it had a time limit. Functioning headlights are a necessity.

2014 Nissan Altima recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2014 Nissan Altima.

2020-05-28
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2018 Nissan Altima vehicles. If the primary hood latch is inadvertently released, there is an increased likelihood that the secondary hood latch may corrode over time.
  • Consequence: Corrosion to the secondary latch may cause it to bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed. If the primary latch is inadvertently released again and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a stronger release spring in the hood release lever, a warning label near the secondary hood latch, and an Owner’s Manual addendum card with instructions on how to lubricate and maintain the secondary hood latch mechanism, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Note: Recall 16V-029 remains open for any unremedied 2013-2015 Altimas and this recall applies to all vehicles covered by 16V-029 even if those repairs have already been performed.
2016-12-19
  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Altima vehicles manufactured January 3, 2013, to July 29, 2013, 2015-2016 Rogue vehicles manufactured October 14, 2014, to August 12, 2016, and 2016 Maxima vehicles manufactured June 4, 2015, to August 19, 2015. An incorrect Occupant Classification System (OCS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat. The incorrect ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.
  • Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pathfinder, Infiniti Q50, JX35, and QX60 and Chevrolet City Express vehicles, free of charge. Interim notices were sent to owners on May 31, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. • Remedy: These vehicles were previously included in recalls 14V-565 and 15V-116, however the previous remedy plan may not have been performed consistently to remove the safety risk. To correct this issue, Nissan will re-notify all affected owners and dealers will replace the hood latch with a new one, free of charge. The recall began on February 17, 2016. • Consequence: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger air bag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will update the OCS software, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) notified the agency on July 31, 2015, that they are recalling certain model year 2016 Nissan Maxima vehicles manufactured February 10, 2015, to August 18, 2015. On October 14, 2015, Nissan expanded the recall to cover an additional 41,388 vehicles, including certain model year 2013-2015 Altima 3.5 vehicles equipped with a V6 engine manufactured March 30, 2012, to August 18, 2015 as well as the vehicles covered by the July 31, 2015 notification. In the affected vehicles, due to an improperly installed o-ring that may not have been seated correctly at the time of assembly, fuel may leak during a crash from the area where the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel tank.
  • Consequence: If fuel leaks from between the fuel sending unit and the tank, it may increase the risk of a fire in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a retainer ring between the fuel tank and the fuel sending unit. The recall began on September 28, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

  • Consequence: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will be instructed to modify the bend angle of the hood actuation lever to eliminate potential interference with the hood inner panel. Negative 2014 Nissan Altima car reviews

I initially test drove a 2013 model but found it to be really noisy. However, after trying out other midsize cars and learning that the 2014 model had more insulation, I decided to give it another chance. I was pleasantly surprised with the improvements and ended up purchasing a 2.5S. Unlike the 2013 model, the 2014 S comes with a display audio package option that includes a rear view monitor, USB port, and 5

Although I loved the car, I experienced a recall to reprogram the transmission after two years. Nissan would not be responsible for damages if I did not comply. Unfortunately, the reprogramming resulted in a jerky pseudo shift that made it difficult to drive smoothly. Upon researching, I discovered that this was a systemic problem. Additionally, a year after the warranty expired, the car developed an intermittent shifting problem, which made me lose trust in the vehicle. As a result, I decided to trade it off. Although I had expected to own the car for much longer, this was an unanticipated financial issue. Due to these issues, I decided not to purchase another Nissan. It was a regrettable experience.

I have owned four Nissans in the past, including a 2005 350Z, a 2010 350Z, a 2014 Rogue Select, and a 2014 Altima 2.5S. Unfortunately, my experience with the Altima has not been great. I had to replace the Bluetooth/entertainment system within a month of purchasing the car, and there have been multiple recalls. The cost of servicing the Altima is also higher than expected. The acceleration and steering are not as responsive as I would like, and the suspension makes some noise over bumps. The interior design is not very inspiring, and the upholstery attracts dust and dirt easily. One day, I experienced several alerts while driving, which turned out to be caused by a faulty ABS module. Overall, I am disappointed with the Altima and regret purchasing it. However, I have been a loyal Nissan customer for many years and will continue to consider their other models in the future. After 5 years, the seats are no longer as comfortable as they used to be. The plastic surrounding the bar has become distorted, causing the fabric coverings to come off the foam. To prevent them from falling down, we have used large binder clips to hold them up. Unfortunately, they are now unusable. Recently, we noticed that the air conditioner was not blowing cold air. We took it to the dealership, where they charged us for an evacuation and recharge. They also mentioned that the coolant did not look good and that it might be the condenser. We were advised to wait and see if the issue persists before replacing the condenser and other components. Although the car is no longer under warranty, we are hopeful that we can fix the issue. Despite these challenges, we still appreciate our car and hope to keep it running for many more years.

I was excited when I bought this car, but after the first two years of ownership, I regretted the purchase. It has been perfectly reliable and economical, but the exterior trim is showing signs of corrosion and rust. The leather on the driver's seat is wrinkled and buckled, the sunroof rattles each time the driver's door is closed, the A/C compressor runs continuously, the heater doesn't work when outside temperatures are warm (and it's hard to get cold air when outside temperatures are chilly), and the design of the interior controls is inconsistent and confusing. Also, I'm not sold on the benefits of the CVT, although it has never stranded me. Yet. That said, the car gets 35 MPG without trying and it rides nicely. However, there are other cars at this price and in this class that are better built, have higher quality materials, don't have a CVT, and hold their value better. My next car won't have a CVT.

I recently purchased a 2014 Nissan and unfortunately, I have been experiencing issues with the dim headlights. Despite having the bulbs changed at the Nissan dealership, the problem persisted and even worsened. After researching online, I discovered that this is a common issue among 2014 Nissan owners and it is due to a projection flaw that can cost up to $2000 to fix. It's been a frustrating experience as I have had to slow down or even stop in the middle of the road when using my dim lights, as they are barely visible. I am disappointed that Nissan has not taken any action to address this issue, as it poses a serious safety risk. I would caution anyone considering purchasing a 2014 Nissan Altima to read the reviews on the headlights before making a decision. I hope that Nissan will take responsibility and fix this issue before any accidents occur. Overall, my experience with this car has been disappointing and I would rate it one star.

Positive 2014 Nissan Altima car reviews

  1. Brooks Sanford 2024-10-21

During my test rides, I noticed that the leather seats were much more comfortable than the cloth seats, which tend to be quite sticky. I ended up purchasing the Altima S with the sport value package, as the cost of the leather seats was a bit too high for me. While NASA may excel at rocket ships, their car seats could use some improvement. I have yet to find a physical therapist who recommends a curved back while driving, and the headrest is slanted too far forward. Combined with the lack of lumbar support, my back tends to ache after just an hour of driving. It's important to make sure you're comfortable with the headrest angle and seats before making a purchase. Additionally, the heater doesn't seem to work when the temperature drops below ten degrees Fahrenheit. Despite these issues, the car is truly awesome! It's so much fun and easy to drive!

I drive on the highway every day to work and back. Unfortunately, I have noticed that my car tends to drift in and out of lanes, which can be quite scary. I know I'm not alone in experiencing this issue. It would be great if the manufacturer could recall and fix this problem. After all, we buy cars to enjoy a safe driving experience, not to worry about our safety on the road. The situation is quite concerning, as I can be driving straight one minute and then suddenly find myself drifting into the next lane or getting too close to the guardrail. I urge the manufacturer to address this issue before it leads to a tragic accident. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hey there! I noticed that you were having some trouble with your commute. It can be tough finding a car that fits all of your needs, especially when you're as tall as you are! After doing some research and test driving a few different models, it sounds like you made a great choice with the Nissan Altima. I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with it so far!

I recently purchased a 2014 Nissan Altima SV and I absolutely love it! Having previously owned a 2011 Altima, I knew I wanted to stick with Nissan and I'm so glad I did. The improvements they've made are fantastic. The ride is smooth and the '0' gravity drivers seat makes long trips much easier on my back. The Michelin tires provide a smooth ride while the suspension still gives you a great driving experience. The car has a sporty look and feel, yet still has plenty of interior space. I've received numerous compliments on how great it looks. The best feature of all is the gas mileage. I average an impressive 39 miles per gallon on the highway! Nissan has truly built a fantastic car that is both fun to drive and provides excellent gas mileage!

  5. Javonte Kunde 2024-07-15

I'm 69 years old and I really like this car better than any I have owned. I bought the car new and it now has 87,000 miles on it. I did have a warranty repair on the transmission at 10K miles, but it has been great ever since. I will definitely consider buying another Altima, it's a great car!
