1992 Saab 9000 problems
The Saab 9000 is a car produced by the Swedish company Saab from 1984 to 1998. Representing the company's foray into the executive car scene, it was developed as a result of the successes of the turbocharged 99 and 900 models. The 9000 remained in production until May 1998 and it was replaced by the Saab 9-5 in late 1997, although some final cars were produced into 1998. The Saab 9000 was only available with petrol engines, in two different 5-door hatchback designs or as a 4-door notchback.
Saab designed the 9000 as part of the Type Four platform in conjunction with the Italian automaker Fiat Automobiles. Fiat retailed similar derivative versions as the more basic Fiat Croma, the luxury-themed Lancia Thema, and the sports-oriented Alfa Romeo 164. Unlike the 164, which shares only the chassis, the Croma and Thema are outwardly similar to the 9000. As such, much of the bodywork appeared interchangeable between the 9000, Croma and Thema; for example, the doors. However, because Saab fitted heavier side impact protection they will not fit. Fiat had designed the Croma with no consideration of American crash test requirements, which forced Saab to strengthen the body by fitting various reinforcements. Thus, the front of the Saab is radically different from the Italian siblings due to the much improved crash protection. Only seven parts are actually interchangeable. The 9000's body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Saab designer Björn Envall.
Despite being shorter overall than the 900 which was still produced in parallel, the 9000 has a longer wheelbase and greater interior space with 3.5 cubic metres (120 cu ft) of interior space 0.67 cubic feet (0.019 m3) in the boot, 1.6 cubic metres (57 cu ft) with rear seats folded), qualifying as an EPA-rated large car, a distinction shared only with the contemporary Rolls-Royce in America. This was achieved by installing the engine transversely to the direction of travel in the Saab 9000 (instead longitudinally as in the Saab 900). Unlike the 900 the 9000 kept the ignition switch in the more conventional steering column position rather than between the front seats. The inspiration for the seats was taken by Björn Envall from The Muppet Show's Pigs in Space, a sketch by the late puppeteer Jim Henson.
In total, 503,087 Saab 9000s were manufactured. These are divided into: 216,385 Saab 9000 CC (MY 1985–1991), 174,525 Saab 9000 CS (MY 1992–1998), 112,177 Saab 9000 CD (MY 1988–1997).

Common 1992 Saab 9000 problems
The 1992 Saab 9000 is known for a few common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Electrical Problems: The Saab 9000's electrical system can also cause problems. For example, the car's ignition switch can get stuck in the off position, making it difficult to start the car. Additionally, the manual shifting linkage can require a bushing to prevent noise and vibration after lowering the car.
- Mechanical Problems: The Saab 9000's mechanical components can also cause issues. For example, the car's transmission can have trouble shifting into 5th gear, and the front jack point can suffer from floor rust damage. The car's climate control system can also require an overview and heater core replacement.
- Engine Failure: The Saab 9000's engine can suffer from failure, particularly in cases where the car has been modified with custom engine maps that require more turbo than the stock system can provide. This can lead to a loss of power and boost, as well as damage to the engine .
In summary, the 1992 Saab 9000 is known for a range of common problems that can affect various aspects of the car, from the engine and electrical system to the transmission and climate control. Owners of this car should be aware of these issues and take steps to address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicle.
Are Saab 9000s reliable?
9000 Aero is the best car Saab has ever made
Very reliable and can easily last 300,000-500,000 miles. Engine is bulletproof - change the oil every 3,000 miles (regular oil) or 6,000 miles (synthetic) and the base is good for at least 300k.
How good was the Saab 9000?
Good, old-fashioned 4-speed automatic does what you want and doesn't 'hunt'. Full-on 2.3 turbo Carlsson and Aero puts out 225bhp, which is very nearly too much. The more powerful turbos grip and handle best on Goodyear F1's or Toyo Proxes tyres. Ride quality a bit firm, but made up for by the excellent seats.
What is a Saab 9000 worth?
A: The average price of a Saab 9000 is $10,197.
How safe is a Saab 9000?
Saab's 9000 and 900 models were given top ratings in both of the surveys, consolidating their reputation as two of the safest cars on the road.

- Summary: I AM VERY UPSET! I WAS LED TO YOUR PAGE BY EDMUNDS CAR SERVICE AS I WAS CONTEMPLATING BUYING A NEW CAR. WHEN I LOOKED AT YOUR RECALL DATA FOR MY CAR, I FOUND TWO RECALLS ORDERED BY YOUR AGENCY WHICH I HAVE NOT BEING NOTIFIED BY SAAB. WHAT REALLY GETS ME IS THAT I HAVE ABEEN WITH THIS PROBLEM FOR OVER A YEAR, AND THE DEALER KNOWING THAT I HAVE HAD THESE PROBLEMS WITH THE RECALLED ITEMS LISTED BY YOU, DID NOT DISCLOSE TO ME THAT THESE HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM. THEY ARE THE TWO LAST ITEMS SHOWN BY YOUR LISTING. ONE FOR THE ABS SYSTEM, WHEREIN MOISTURE CAUSES SWITCH TO FAIL. THEY TOLD ME THE "COMPUTER" SWITCH WOULD COST OVER $2000 TO REPAIR. MY WIFE ALMOST GOT INTO A CRASH, BECAUSE WHILE DRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY, THE ENGINE CONKED OUT BECAUSE OF THIS TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM/ABS CAUSED A TOTAL FAILURE. THEY STILL HAVE NOT TOLD ME ABOUT THIS RECALL!!! 2 WEEKS AGO, SAAB FINALLY SENT A DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE TO CHECK THE TCS/ABS TO TRY AN DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE LOCAL REPAIR SHOP, KAMIL SAAB, REPLACED A VACUUM SELENOID, AND ANOTHER VACUUM VALVE, AND SAID TO DRIVE IT. IT WORKED FINE, HOWEVER, FAILED AGAIN ON SUNDAY 5/23/99 WITH ME DRIVING, THEN YESTERDAY 5/24/1999 WHEN MY MOTHER-IN-LAW WAS DRIVING. SAME TCS/ABS INDICATIONS. I AM HOPPING MAD...THEY COULD HAVE AT LEAST TOLD US ABOUT THE RECALL. THE WESTERN DISTRICT SAAB CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER OFFERED ME A CERTIFICATE #1632, FOR $2500 TO BUY A NEW SAAB. I CAN FAX IT TO YOU...IT DOCUMENTS THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM/ABS PROBLEM. WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST TELL ME ABOUT THE RECALL?? AND TO TAKE IT IN TO GET IT FIXED FOR FREE. THE CAR SAT IDLE FROM DECEMBER 1998 UNTIL MAY 1999...NO ONE WOULD HELP, UNTIL I CALLED KAMIL'S AUTO AGAIN. *AK

1992 Saab 9000 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1992 Saab 9000.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. MOISTURE CAN ENTER THE AIR BAG INFLATABLE RESTRAINT ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) AND CAUSE CORROSION ON PORTIONS OF THE ECM PRINTER CIRCUIT BOARDS.
- Consequence: THIS CORROSION CAN POSSIBLY CREATE OPEN CONNECTIONS IN CIRCUITS WHICH CONTROL THE RESTRAINT DEPLOYMENT, POSSIBLY CAUSING INADVERTENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE EXTERIOR OF THE ECM. IF THERE IS NO INDICATION OF MOISTURE, A COVER WILL BE INSTALLED OVER THE ECM. IF THERE IS INDICATION OF MOISTURE, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE ECM AND INSTALL A COVER OVER THE NEW ECM.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: MOISTURE CAN FOLLOW THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS AND ENTER THE PRESSURE SWITCH CONNECTOR CAUSING CORROSION AND MALFUNCTION OF THE SWITCH.
- Consequence: THE CORROSION CAUSES A DETERIORATION OF THE ELECTRICALSWITCH CONNECTION AND CAN RESULT IN FALSE ILLUMINATION OF ABS AND/OR THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS AND/OR THE LOSS OF POWER ASSISTANCE BECAUSE OF NO HYDRAULIC PUMPOPERATION. LOSS OF POWER ASSIST INCREASES THE DRIVER'S BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT REQUIRED FOR STOPPING WHICH CAN RESULT IN EXTENDED BRAKING DISTANCES.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE ABS PRESSURE SWITCH TERMINALS FOR CORROSION AND INSTALL A SHRINK HOSE TO THE WIRING HARNESS TO AVOID MOISTURE ENTERING THE CONNECTION. PRESSURE SWITCHES WITH CORRODED CONNECTORS WILL BE REPLACED.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM
- Summary: DURING LOW ENERGY FRONTAL IMPACT COLLISIONS, THE FRONT CROSSMEMBER CAN CONTACT THE METAL TUBING PORTION OF THE COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLY; AND/OR THE HOSE ASSEMBLY CAN BREAK AND LEAK OIL ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD OR THE TURBOCHARGER.
- Consequence: OIL LEAKING ON THESE HOT ENGINE SURFACES CAN IGNITE AND CAUSE A VEHICULAR FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER WHICH WILL PROTECT THE COOLER AND HOSES FROM OTHER STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS IN LOW ENERGY FRONT IMPACTS.
- Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: THE FUEL FILLER AND TANK VENTILATION HOSES MAY DEVELOP CRACKS UNDER THE SECURING HOSE CLAMPS, RESULTING IN FUEL LEAKAGE.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKS MAY RESULT IN A FIRE IF AN IGNITION SOURCEIS PRESENT.
- Remedy: THE FUEL FILLER AND FUEL VENTILATION HOSES WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEW HOSES. THE FIVE SECURING HOSE CLAMPS WILL BE REPLACED BY A NEW TYPE WITH A SHIELD THAT PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE HOSE WHEN TIGHTENED.

This is my first car, and I absolutely love it! My parents gave it to me, and I couldn't be more grateful. It's truly an amazing car.

I bought this car as an investment to fix up and resell. Unfortunately, the ASR module went out after only 3 weeks. The dealer quoted me $1000 for the fix, but I managed to find a used one for $475, including installation. Despite the setback, I'm considering keeping the car and selling something else instead!
-
Wow, you've had this ride for 12 years! That's amazing. It's a great car with a smooth and stylish design that still matches new models. Although it would be nice to hide the interior, the stapled roof, ripped seats, and sunroof that leaks all over you after a night of rain can be a bit of a hassle. However, the engine and transmission are top-notch on this car. With a good SAAB mechanic and access to affordable parts, this car can easily go well past 200K.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that we had a bit of trouble with our car recently. Unfortunately, the lower ball joint fell out while we were driving around town, causing the wheel to fall off. It was definitely unexpected, but we're grateful that everyone is safe. We've had a few other issues with the car in the past, like a timing chain break that cracked the block and some problems with the seat heaters and spark plug manifold. Every once in a while, the security system even self-alarms! But we're doing our best to take care of it and keep it running smoothly. Thanks for your understanding!

Underrated horsepower. Only thing that can compete on the road 10 years after purchase are vehicles with Cadillac's North Star engine. Very safe, and performs beautifully in the winter....even drove it across the Rockies. Interior still rivals 2002 cars with its aesthetics and design. Too bad they didn't incorporate some cup holders back in 92'.

I really enjoy the way the car drives. It has an excellent motor and transmission. However, there seem to be some issues with the electrical parts. It needs repairs on the hood, a small place on the body, a rear tail light lens, repairs on the AC, and the tape deck and CD player are not working. I believe it also needs a new alternator. Unfortunately, it is not currently running, even with a new battery that is not holding a charge.
Garrick Beer 2024-03-23
I would recommend considering other options instead of this one. Saab is no longer in business, which means that parts can be quite expensive. Additionally, my personal experience with a Saab was not great. It seemed like every time I fixed one thing, something else would go wrong. Unfortunately, the car eventually broke down on the highway and caused some damage. While I was able to sell it for scrap, it was still a loss. Just keep in mind that the car also had some issues with leaking and required frequent repairs.
Brennon Ward 2024-01-27
You made a great choice in purchasing this car from a repair shop that specializes in European cars. It had 105,300 miles on it and was 8 years old, but it still provided you with lots of luxury for little money. Although repairs can be expensive, you only had a few issues in the 2 years you owned it, and the parts that needed replacing were original issue. You must have felt very safe and secure in it, especially with the ABS brakes that prevented any fishtailing and helped you avoid 3 close encounters unscathed.
