2004 Mitsubishi Lancer problems
The Mitsubishi Lancer is an automobile produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors since 1973.
The Lancer has been marketed as the Colt Lancer, Dodge Colt, Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Soueast Lioncel, and Mitsubishi Mirage in various countries at different times, and has been sold as the Mitsubishi Galant Fortis in Japan since 2007. It has also been sold as Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis in Taiwan with a different facelift than the Galant Fortis. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
Between its introduction in 1973 and 2008, over six million units were sold. There have been ten generations of Lancers.
Mitsubishi ended production of the Lancer in August 2017 worldwide, with the exception of Taiwan and China. An extensive facelift was given to the car by Pininfarina's Chinese offices.

Common 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer problems
The Mitsubishi Lancer 2004 has been reported to have several common problems, including issues with the automatic gearbox, engine overheating, and faulty Takata airbags.
One of the most significant issues with the Mitsubishi Lancer 2004 is the automatic gearbox problems. The automatic gearboxes on this car are known for having issues with changing the gears. If you are finding that they are changing hesitantly, or that the gears are slipping, you will need a replacement gearbox. They are sealed units, which means the whole gearbox needs changing.
Another common problem with the Mitsubishi Lancer 2004 is the engine overheating, which can lead to battery charge loss and harder steering. This issue can be caused by a drive belt made of the wrong material, which can wear at an angle and force it off the pulleys. Ordering a replacement drive belt from a parts list and replacing it can solve this problem.
The Mitsubishi Lancer 2004 also has a safety recall related to faulty Takata airbags. As the car gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can affect airbags with the fault. If you are involved in a collision, the airbag can go off with too much explosive force, causing sharp metal fragments to shoot out and kill or seriously injure the vehicle's occupants. It is critical that you urgently contact a Mitsubishi dealer to arrange for the airbag to be checked and replaced if faulty.
In summary, the Mitsubishi Lancer 2004 has several common problems, including automatic gearbox issues, engine overheating, and faulty Takata airbags. It is essential to address these problems promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-22
- VIN: JA3AD29F04U
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL. HAD ORIGINAL AIRBAG REPLACED 2 YRS AGO. RECEIVED A LETTER FROM MITSUBISHI STATING I NEEDED TO HAVE IT DONE AGAIN. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR MITSUBISHI WHEN I LEARNED THEY NO LONGER HAVE A MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP LOCALLY. I WAS ADVISED AT THAT TIME THAT THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP , IN EITHER DIRECTION, WAS 4-5 HOURS FROM WHERE I LIVE. I WAS ADVISED THAT I NEEDED TO CALL ALL THE MECHANICS IN THE AREA TO FIND ONE THAT IS CERTIFIED BY MITSUBISHI! IF I COULD FIND ONE AND THEY WERE MITSUBISHI CERTIFIED, THE WORK WOULD BE DONE AND MITSUBISHI WOULD PAY FOR IT. HOWEVER, THEY NEED TO HAVE CURRENT CERTIFICATION. I HAVE CALLED A FEW DEALERSHIPS IN THE AREA, BUT NO ONE HAS A CERTIFICATION FOR MITSUBISHI. I DIDN'T INSTALL THE BAD AIRBAGS. I WOULD HAVE TO TRAVEL TO EITHER OF THESE DEALERSHIPS, SPEND THE NIGHT IN A MOTEL, WAIT FOR THE APPOINTMENT AND WORK TO BE DONE, AND DRIVE HOME. THIS IS RIDICULOUS! IN THE MEANTIME, I HAVE RECEIVED A SECOND LETTER FROM MITSUBISHI STATING THAT I SHOULDN'T ALLOW ANYONE TO RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT OF THE CAR UNTIL IT'S REPAIRED. I DON'T KNOW IF THE DRIVERS SIDE AIRBAG IS ANY GOOD EITHER. I WOULD APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME. I FEEL LIKE MY CAR AT THE PRESENT TIME IS USELESS. I'M IN FEAR OF DRIVING EVEN TO THE GROCERY STORE.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-01
- VIN: JA3AJ26E84U
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: A RECALL WAS ISSUED IN 2005 FOR A POTENTIAL ISSUE IN THE POWER TRAIN. THE RECALL STATED THAT IF THE VEHICLE HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THE REPAIR WAS TO FIRST TRY REPROGRAMMING THE POWER TRAIN. IF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED AFTERWARDS, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE ABOVE OUTLINED SERVICE IN 2005. THE POWER TRAIN WAS REPROGRAMMED AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT AWAY, BUT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS NOT REPLACED. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT LATER RETURNED. A DIAGNOSTIC REVEALED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDED REPLACED. I BELIEVE THAT IF THE INITIAL RECALL WORK IN 2005 WAS PROPERLY FULFILLED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED. MITSUBISHI HAS REFUSED TO REPAIR OF REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER, CITING THAT THE WORK DONE IN THE RECALL WAS SUFFICIENT. I CONTEND THAT THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT THOROUGH ENOUGH AND THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER SHOULD BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED BY THE MANUFACTURER.

I WENT ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE AND DON'T UNDERSTAND WHILE THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL PANEL HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ISSUE. - Summary: I AM AN OWNER OF TWO MITSUBISHI CARS; ONE BOUGHT NEW AT A MITS. DEALER IN TUCSON, AZ 11 YEARS AGO AND THE OTHER BOUGHT JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO AT A USED CAR LOT IN TUCSON, AZ. YESTERDAY, I RECEIVED AN 'IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL' NOTICE FOR BOTH CARS VIA MAIL. IT'S RECOMMENDED TO TAKE CARE OF THE RECALL OF THE PASSENGER AIR BAG, THAT IS DESCRIBED AS CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. YET, THERE IS CURRENTLY NO LOCAL DEALER WHERE I LIVE. THEREFORE, I CALLED THE PHONE NUMBER LISTED ON THE NOTICE TO ADDRESS MY CONCERN. I WAS TOLD I'D HAVE TO TRAVEL TO ANOTHER CITY OVER 80 MILES ONE WAY TO HAVE THIS REMEDIED. THIS WOULD BE MUCH TOO INCONVENIENT, UNLIKE THE PROMISED 'EVERY EFFORT TO MINIMIZE INCONVENIENCE' THE NOTICE REFERENCE. SHOULDN'T THEY ALLOW THIS TO BE DONE BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC IN THE CITY OF TUCSON WHERE I PURCHASED THE CARS AND RESIDE; IT'S NOT MY FAULT THAT THEY'VE HAD MAULTIPLE DEALERSHIPS CLOSE DOWN HERE? EVERY SUMMER I WORRY ABOUT BEING AT A STOP SIGN AND WHILE MY FOOT IS ON THE BREAK THE CAR IS TRYING TO DRIVE. THERE IS SOMETHING OBVIOUSLY WRONG WITH THIS MAKE AND MODEL. VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-06-29
- VIN: JA3AJ26E24U
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: THIS IS WITH REFERENCE TO THE CLIMATE CONTROL PANEL, THE KNOB TO TURN SYSTEM TEMPERATURE FROM COLD TO HEAT, WITH TIME THE KNOB GOT STIFF AND IT WAS VERY HARD TO TURN FROM COLD TO HEAT, FOR YEARS I HAVE HAD TO PLAY WITH IT EVERY TIME I NEEDED TO USE IT TO SWITCH TO THE TEMPERATURE I DESIRED ACCORDING TO THE WEATHER, ESPECIALLY IN THE RAIN AND WHEN GOING FROM SUMMER TO WINTER. FINALLY THE KNOB BROKE OFF AND NOW I AM NO LONGER ABLE TO TURN IT MAKING IT "IMPOSSIBLE" TO DEFROST THE WINDOWS, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT RAINS AND THEY GET FOGGY FROM THE HUMIDITY OR EARLY IN THE MORNING DURING THE COLD WINTER MONTHS WHICH RESULTS IN UNSAFE DRIVING AS IT IMPAIRS MY VISION TO THE POINT THAT I NEED TO ROLL DOWN MY WINDOWS WHILE I AM DRIVING WHICH IS QUITE DANGEROUS. ONLY THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST WORKS BECAUSE IT IS CONTROLLED BY A DIFFERENT KNOB. I HAVE READ ON SEVERAL WEBSITES THAT THIS INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED TO A GREAT AMOUNT OF OTHER MITSUBISHI LANCER OWNERS, WITH MODELS BETWEEN 2002-2005 AND FOR THE EXACT KNOB, THE ONE FOR THE CLIMATE CONTROL. THERE ARE 2 OTHER KNOBS TO CONTROL THE FAN AND DIRECTION OF AIR THAT WORK PERFECTLY AND NO REPORTS ON BEING STUCK OR BROKEN ON THOSE TWO. IT SEEMS THAT THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL KNOB IS THE ONLY ONE GETTING STIFF AND BREAKING OFF WITH TIME, SO IT MORE THAN LIKELY IS A FACTORY DEFECT WITH THE KNOB OR THE WHOLE PART. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO STOP WHEN RAINING AND SO FAR I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ACCIDENTS ON ACCOUNT OF THIS BUT I AM NOT SURE IF OTHER CONSUMERS HAVE HAD THE SAME GOOD LUCK. IS MITSUBISHI ALREADY TAKING ANY ACTION TO FIX THIS PROBLEM? WHAT CAN WE, AS CUSTOMERS, DO TO GET IT FIXED? *TR

2004 Mitsubishi Lancer recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2004-2006 Mitsubishi Lancer vehicles that previously received a like-for-like passenger side frontal air bag inflator under recall 15V321 as interim remedy. Also recalled are 2004-2006 Lancer vehicles located in Guam or Saipan that previously received or never received a new inflator under 15V321 or 17V569. These passenger side frontal air bag inflators may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to explode in the event of an air bag deployment.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will install a final replacement passenger side frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on April 26, 2018. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-18-005.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain 2004-2006 Lancer and Lancer Evolution vehicles and 2004 Lancer Sportback vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with a different inflator, free of charge. The recall began on October 12, 2017. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-17-001. Note: This recall supersedes recall 15V-321.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2002-2007 Lancer, 2004 Lancer Wagon, 2003-2006 Lancer Evolution, 2003-2006 Outlander and 2007-2013 Outlander V-6 vehicles originally sold in, or ever registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may detach due to the front cross member corroding from salt water exposure such as from road salt use.
- Consequence: A detached front control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front cross members. Depending on the level of existing corrosion, either a sealing/anti-corrosion agent will be applied or the front cross member will be replaced with a new one that has a sealing/anti-corrosion agent applied to it. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began January 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-003.
