1995 Mitsubishi 3000gt problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990 until 2000 over three different generations. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.

The car was based on Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante and retained their transverse mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive layout. The GTO's engines were naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers and were also available with active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.

Mitsubishi marketed a retractable hardtop variant, which were engineered and converted from coupé models in California by ASC, and sold as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder for model years 1993–1995. These were the first fully automated retractable hardtop marketed since the 1959 Ford Skyliner.

The JDM model took its name from the Galant GTO, a two-door hardtop coupé marketed by the company in the early 1970s, which in turn took its name from the Ferrari 250 GTO, short for Gran Turismo Omologata – "Omologata" signifying that it met motorsport homologation requirements.

Common 1995 Mitsubishi 3000gt problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Timing Belts and Water Pumps: Owners have reported issues with timing belts and water pumps being common problems in the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995. These components are crucial for the proper functioning of the engine and cooling system, and any issues with them can lead to significant performance issues and potential engine damage.
  2. Electronics: The complex electronic systems in the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995 have been a source of complaints among owners. Electrical faults can be particularly troublesome, leading to issues that are challenging to diagnose and repair. Failures in the engine and gearbox ECUs, which control various systems in the car, have been reported, requiring costly replacements due to their location in hard-to-reach areas.
  3. Suspension: Another common problem reported by owners is related to the suspension of the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995. Wear and tear on suspension bushes can lead to rattling and knocking noises, affecting the ride quality and handling of the vehicle. Additionally, struts have been known to suffer from wear over time, impacting the overall stability and comfort of the car.
  4. Transmission Issues: Both manual and automatic transmissions in the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995 have been highlighted as problematic areas. Manual gearboxes may exhibit notchiness in standard operation, which is considered normal. However, transfer cases and output shafts can fail, necessitating thorough checks by specialists to avoid expensive repairs. Automatic transmissions, especially on some grey imports, have been reported to have more issues, requiring careful maintenance and attention.
  5. Hoses and Boost: Owners have raised concerns about the turbocharger and intercooler hoses in the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995. These hoses are prone to popping off, especially in modified cars with increased boost pressure. Ensuring the retaining clips are secure and in good condition is essential to prevent such issues. Moreover, modifying the boost pressure beyond recommended levels can lead to stress on engine internals, potentially causing damage to components like con-rods and valves.
  6. Aerodynamics: The active aerodynamic systems in early models of the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995 have been reported to stop working over time. While repairable, few owners have addressed these issues. The active aerodynamics play a crucial role in enhancing high-speed stability and downforce, contributing to the overall performance of the vehicle.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and thorough inspections to address issues promptly and ensure the longevity and performance of the Mitsubishi 3000GT 1995.

Does the Mitsubishi 3000GT a reliable car?

While there are a number of potential issues to watch out for, the 3000GT is a well-built car and if maintained well can provide years of pleasurable motoring.

Why did Mitsubishi stop making 3000GT?

1999 was the final year the 3000GT was available in the U.S. market. With sales slowing to a trickle and new side impact regulations looming, production for the Japanese domestic market finally ceased in 2000.

How long do Mitsubishi 3000gts last?

Yep, it'll last as long as you take care of it. I know of a few above 300k. 1997 3000GT VR4 - 17 years of ownership - TD05-16G E85 600whp - Daily Driver 😈 - Broken Again! definatly 250k+ miles if you take care of it.

Is the 3000GT a rare car?

While the 1999 3000GT VR-4 is the rarest of the bunch, with just 287 being sold in the US market before Mitsubishi discontinued the 3000GT, a 1998 model with so few miles on the odometer is likely even rarer.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-05-12
  • VIN: JA3AN74K4SY
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: REGARDING NHTSA RECALL ID: 02V143001 FOR THE TRANSFER CASE ON THE 1995 MITSUBISHI 3000GT VR-4. MY CAR'S TRANSFER CASE BEGAN LEAKING ABOUT 100 MILES AGO. THROUGH MY CAR CLUB I WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A SAFETY RECALL ISSUED ON THIS AND TO CALL THE DEALER. I CALLED THE DEALER TO SEE WHEN I COULD SCHEDULE MY REPAIR AND THEY ASKED FOR MY VIN#. WHEN THEY RAN THE VIN# THEY FOUND OUT THAT THE PREVIOUS CAR OWNER TOOK THE CAR IN DEC. OF 2002 AND THE TRANSFER CASE PASSED INSPECTION SO THE SAFETY RECALL WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR MY CAR. I THEN CALLED MITSUBISHI OF NORTH AMERICA AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE NO LONGER LIABLE FOR THIS REPAIR. I WENT BACK TO MY CAR CLUB AND FOUND OUT FROM SEVERAL MEMBERS THAT THEY HAD THE RECALL DONE SEVERAL TIMES WITH LITTLE OR NO HASSLE FROM MITSUBISHI. THEY SUGGESTED I CONTACT YOU AND FILE A COMPLAINT. IF THIS ISN'T ADDRESSED, THE TRANSFER CASE CAN LOCK UP AT HIGH SPEEDS CAUSING MY REAR WHEELS TO SEIZE AND MY VEHICLE TO LOSE CONTROL AND POSSIBLY ROLL OR SPIN OUT OF CONTROL. SO THIS IS DEFINITELY A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT NOW, AND I CERTAINLY WON'T EVEN CONSIDER LETTING MY WIFE OR 6 MONTH OLD SON RIDE IN THE CAR UNTIL THIS IS ADDRESSED. MY CAR HAS 127K MILES ON IT SO IT HAS BEEN DRIVING LESS THAN 12K A YEAR. MITSUBISHI DIDN'T REPLACE OR FIX ANYTHING ON THE TRANSFER CASE WHEN THE RECALL WAS ORIGINALLY DONE IN 2002. I FEEL THEY SHOULD STILL BE LIABLE FOR THIS. I'VE HAD NOTHING BUT GRIEF WITH THEM EVERYTIME I TRY TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR SAFETY RELATED ISSUES. LAST YEAR I HAD TO BUY NEW SEAT BELTS BECAUSE MINE NO LONGER RETRACTED. MANUFACTURERS LIKE HONDA AND TOYOTA WARRANTY SEAT BELTS FOR THE LIFE OF THE CAR. I WOULD BUY A NEW TRANSFER CASE, EXCEPT WITH PARTS AND LABOR IT WOULD BE OVER $3000 AND I DON'T FEEL THIS IS MY RESPONSIBILITY SINCE THERE IS A GOVERNMENT MANDATED SAFETY RECALL ON THIS, AND IT TECHNICALLY HAS NEVER BEEN REPAIRED OR SERVICED BEFORE. *NM

  • VIN: JA3AM84J3SY
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: MY SEAT BELTS IN MY 1995 MITSUBISHI 3000GT DO NOT RETRACT PROPERLY, AND STAY LOOSE WHEN DRIVING. THERE IS A LOT OF SLACK ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEAT BELTS WHEN IN USE AND IS A HAZARD TO MY PASSENGER AND MYSELF IF WE WERE EVER INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. THERE ARE MANY MITSUBISHI 3000GTS AND DODGE STEALTHS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, NOT A WEAR-AND-TEAR ITEM, AND SHOULD BE RECALLED TO INSTITUTE SAFETY IN THESE VEHICLES.

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-04-17
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: THE SEAT BELTS ON MY 1995 MITSUBISHI 3000GT WILL NOT RETRACT ON THEIR OWN. I HAVE TRIED CLEANING THEM BUT THAT DOESN'T HELP. MITSUBISHI DOES NOT COVER THIS ANYMORE BECAUSE THE TIME FRAME IS UP. MANY OTHER 3000GT'S OF ALL YEARS IN ALL CONDITIONS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE MITSUBISHI SHOULD BE FIXING, NOT ME. *JB

I HAVE OWNED THE CAR FOR 10 YEARS AND THEY HAVE NOT CONSISTENTLY WORKED SINCE JUST ABOUT DAY ONE. IT STARTED INFREQUENTLY AND NOW IT IS CONSTANT WHERE THE SEAT BELTS DO NOT RETRACT AND FIT SNUG AGAINST YOUR BODY WHEN DRIVING. I CONSIDER THIS A SERIOUS POTENTIAL SAFETY ISSUE. *JB

Negative 1995 Mitsubishi 3000gt car reviews

  1. Dameon Jenkins 2024-03-18

Although my experience with this sports car was not ideal, I am confident in my decision to trade it in. Despite purchasing it in 1998 with 56K miles, I encountered several issues within the first few months of ownership, including the need for 4 new brake calipers and a replacement auto transmission. While I was grateful to have an extended warranty that covered the $4K cost of the new transmission, I found the car's handling to be subpar compared to other models I have owned in the past. Additionally, I experienced hydroplaning on wet roads, which made me hesitant to drive it. Ultimately, I made the decision to trade it in and am relieved to have moved on from this car.

Positive 1995 Mitsubishi 3000gt car reviews

  1. Bradford Abbott 2025-01-09

I have a 95 VR4. I recently had to fix the rear spoiler that goes up and down three times in one month. Although it was out of warranty, Mitsubishi picked up the bill because the dealer had made two mistakes during previous repairs. I have only changed the spark plugs at 60K, oil every 3K, and tires at about 30K. That's it, no other repairs! In my opinion, this car is incredibly reliable, especially considering it has twin turbos. It has great speed, as long as you know how to shift it relatively fast at the start up, and will accelerate with no problems up to 120MPH. At 90-100, you feel like you are going 20 - change lanes, stop, swerve, the car is rock solid.

  2. Karl Grant 2025-01-08

I'm so glad to hear that you had such a great experience with your 94 SL! It sounds like it was a real hot rod. Your new 95 Spyder SL with just 12.5K on it sounds like a real gem too. It's great to hear that you're enjoying cruising around in it with the top down on a warm day. It's no surprise that everyone is asking what it is and complimenting it, especially when you're lowering and raising the top. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

  3. Arely Trantow 2024-11-21

    Best car ever manufactured!

  4. Delaney Bayer 2024-11-05

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it mainly for its stylish exterior, but I couldn't resist making some upgrades under the hood. I replaced the stock engine with a supercharged Ford 5.0 Coyote and 6-speed gearbox, which has given it some serious power! However, I do wish it had more cup holders, as I'm always drinking soda while driving. Also, being 6'2'', it can be a bit of a challenge getting in and out of the car without hitting my knees on the steering wheel. It would be great if the steering wheel was adjustable. Overall, I'm really enjoying my car and the upgrades I've made to it!

  5. Garett Schoen 2024-10-22

My experience with this vehicle has been, for lack of better words, really great!
