Mitsubishi 3000gt problems
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990 until 2000 over three different generations. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.
The car was based on Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante and retained their transverse mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive layout. The GTO's engines were naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers and were also available with active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.
Mitsubishi marketed a retractable hardtop variant, which were engineered and converted from coupé models in California by ASC, and sold as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder for model years 1993–1995. These were the first fully automated retractable hardtop marketed since the 1959 Ford Skyliner.
The JDM model took its name from the Galant GTO, a two-door hardtop coupé marketed by the company in the early 1970s, which in turn took its name from the Ferrari 250 GTO, short for Gran Turismo Omologata – "Omologata" signifying that it met motorsport homologation requirements.

Common Mitsubishi 3000gt problems
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a high-performance sports car that was produced from 1990 to 2001. While it was known for its sleek styling, advanced features, and supercar-humbling performance, it also had its fair share of common problems that owners should be aware of.
One of the most common issues with the Mitsubishi 3000GT is electrical faults, which can lead to hair-pulling frustration. The engine and gearbox ECUs that control the complex systems are known to fail, and they are replaceable at a cost, but are located in difficult-to-reach areas, increasing labor costs.
Suspension bushes also wear out regularly, leading to rattling and knocking noises, while struts have been known to suffer from wear. Manual transmissions were standard on all UK cars, and notchiness in standard operation is normal. However, transfer cases and output shafts can fail, making it essential to get the transmission checked out thoroughly by a specialist.
Automatic transmissions tend to be even more problematic and are equipped on some grey imports. Hoses for the turbocharger and intercooler are known to pop off, especially if a car has been chipped, while engine internals can suffer if the boost is upped too much. Aerodynamic systems on early cars do inevitably stop working, but they are repairable.
Transmission problems are also common, with the biggest issue being the transmission itself. Many Mitsubishi 3000GTs have had transmission issues, and while they are great cars, they can be expensive to fix due to the lack of available parts and their rarity.
The aftermarket world of parts for the Mitsubishi 3000GT is not as big as for other cars, and mods can be expensive. However, if done correctly, they can be very rewarding. Stock Mitsubishi 3000GTs ran up with cars like the Supra, 300zx, Mazda rx7, Skyline, and so on, and plenty of power can be extracted from the 6g72tt engine.
In summary, the Mitsubishi 3000GT is a well-built car that can provide years of pleasurable motoring if maintained well. However, owners should be aware of potential issues, such as electrical faults, suspension and steering problems, transmission issues, and aftermarket part availability. Regular maintenance and addressing issues quickly can help keep the car running smoothly for years to come.
Are Mitsubishi 3000GT reliable?
This car is very cool looking and is a fun car to drive, however the comfort is not bad but is what is expected from a sports car. Although Mitsubishi does not have the best reputation, the 1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT is fairly reliable. There were some interior rattles. Over all it is a good car.
How many miles does a 3000GT last?
BTW some 3000GT/Stealth owners have over 250K miles without any serious maintenance done.
Is the Mitsubishi 3000GT a good daily?
Dependable Daily driver
I currently own a base model 1998 3000gt and It's my daily driver. It's a great car to own. It's all around good in gas mileage , very quick for the sohc non turbo (mines a 5 speed). Great appearance inside and out, eye catching, people ask about it all the time.
Is the 3000GT a rare car?
While the 1999 3000GT VR-4 is the rarest of the bunch, with just 287 being sold in the US market before Mitsubishi discontinued the 3000GT, a 1998 model with so few miles on the odometer is likely even rarer.

- Date Complaint: 2014-02-24
- VIN: JA3AM44H1VY
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: MY CAR IS WELL KEPT AND GARAGED AT NIGHT. IN NOVEMBER 2012, I WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE CAR AND WAS TOLD BY MY MECHANIC OF 20 YEARS THAT MY "TOTAL FRONT END" ON THE CAR NEEDED REPLACED. THIS REQUIRED THE REPLACEMENT OF GASKETS, AN OAL FLEX, RACK & PINION, AND A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. IT WAS A VERY EXPENSIVE JOB WITH THE EXPLANATION GIVEN THAT IT WAS "WORN OUT." NOW, THE STEERING IS A PROBLEM WITH STRANGE SOUNDS AND THE PERIODIC MOVEMENT OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN DRIVING. AN INSPECTION OF THAT DISCLOSED THAT NOW, THE "INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ON THE STEERING WHEEL" NEEDS REPLACED. AFTER RESEARCHING THE INTERNET, I AM FINDING OUT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL CARS RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THAT IS THE CASE FOR THIS CAR. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTICES FOR THIS. I LOVE MY CAR BUT AM WONDERING WHY SUCH AN EXPENSIVE CAR (AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE) IS HAVING ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS NOW. I WAS EVEN TOLD THAT THE SUSPENSION WILL BE ANOTHER FUTURE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY MANUFACTURER PURPOSELY SEALED THEM WHEN THEY WERE MADE WHICH MAKES THEM IMPOSSIBLE TO SERVICE AND WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. THIS WAS NEVER TOLD TO ME WHEN I PURCHASED IT. PLEASE ADVISE IF I HAVE ANY RECOURSE WITH THE MANUFACTURER FOR THESE REPAIRS. THANK YOU. *TR

I love my VR4. It's flashy, fun to drive, and pretty reliable, especially considering all the electrical toys. After 150K, I expect some problems, but routine maintenance takes care of everything (except my fried computer last year). I'm about 6'5

This sports car is an absolute steal for the price! It's a 1997 SL model that turns more heads than any Vette or Mustang out there. I've owned one Vette and two Cobras, but this car's acceleration is something else. It's even better on the highway. The SL is much lighter than the VR-4, and with 218hp, it really goes. I topped out at 158mph! If you're looking to turn heads and feel great, this is definitely the car for you.

I went from driving an automatic 91 dodge stealth to a manual 94 3000gt sl! I couldn't believe the difference in the two cars. The 3000 is so much fun and pretty quick (with some minor mods)!

This car has been problematic since day one and has caused me to lose a significant amount of time for school and work. Despite being marketed as a reliable alternative to Camaro and Mustang, it has failed to live up to expectations. The car died after only a few uses, which has been a major inconvenience. Additionally, the gas mileage is abysmal at 16/22 for a V6. If I had known this beforehand, I would not have purchased this car. It is important to thoroughly research and consider all factors before making a significant purchase like a car.

I just wanted to share that I recently purchased a 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT and I absolutely love it! It's a sports car that drives very smoothly and I enjoy the attention it gets from people as I drive down the street. I've actually owned a Mitsubishi before, an Eclipse that I drove for a long time, and I've always been very happy with my cars.

This car came with no warranty available. However, within less than 90 days of owning it, the water pump froze and the timing belt broke, causing major problems with the engine. Despite this, I am confident in stating that the company should have stood behind the problem with the car.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 3000gt. Unfortunately, I had some trouble with it shortly after purchasing it with 44,000 miles. However, I was able to fix the transmission issue for $1,500 and decided to switch to a manual transmission. I also had to replace the alternator for about $300 and spent a week in the shop. While some say that a car with this mileage should not have these issues, I have found that every little part in a Mitsubishi is made in Japan. Overall, I am disappointed with my purchase and would advise against buying any Mitsubishi, from Montero to Mirage. Thanks for listening to my story!

Vehicle year: 1993
The 1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT is a beautiful car, but it is more suited for cruising than for sports. While the Nissan 300ZX and Toyota Supra also had a 3.0 6 cyl engine, the 3000GT was the only one with front-wheel drive, making it heavier and less agile. Although it did not handle as well as my '90 300ZX, it was still a sight to behold. Unfortunately, the engine suffered from an internal oil leak and died prematurely at only 68,000 miles. I had a similar experience with my 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, which had the same issue at 125,000 miles. Maintenance for the 3000GT was quite expensive, and I ultimately decided to sell the car as-is rather than pay $3,200 for a replacement engine, fearing further issues.
