Common Mini Countryman problems
The Mini Countryman is a popular compact SUV known for its stylish looks, responsive handling, and competent engine power. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain problems over time. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Mini Countryman owners:
- Shattering/exploding sunroof: The 2013 Mini Countryman has been reported to have a significant issue with the sunroof shattering or exploding following an exploding sound. Replacing the sunroof with shatterproof glass can fix this problem.
- Engine overheats: The 2012 Mini Countryman has been reported to have an engine that tends to overheat, causing symptoms like illuminated check engine lights, coolant leakage, blown head gaskets, and more. This issue is believed to be caused by faulty core plugs and coolant leaks.
- Internal oil leaks: Another noteworthy problem with the 2012 Countryman is internal oil leaks, which can be hard to detect outside the car. These leaks drip through the wiring sheath and may reach the electronic control unit (ECU), potentially causing a short circuit and severe damage.
- Tie rods: A small number of Mini Countrymans made between 29 March and 8 April 2019 have an issue where the tie rods on the front suspension were not assembled correctly. If your car is affected, it will need to be checked by a Mini dealer and have the fault rectified.
- Crankshaft sensor: A problem with the crankshaft sensor of some examples built from 19 May and 9 June 2018 could lead to the engine going into an emergency reduced power mode and limiting performance. A Mini dealer will be able to confirm if your Countryman is affected by this and arrange to have the sensor replaced.
- Swivel bearings: A manufacturing flaw with the swivel bearings on the front suspension could lead to fractures in the part over time. This affects vehicles made between 24 April and 1 May 2018, and you can find out if your car is affected by contacting your Mini dealer.
- Crash protection plate: 1.5-litre petrol models manufactured between 2 January 2017 and 25 May 2018 might not have a crash protection plate installed at the factory to protect the high-pressure fuel pump in the event of a collision. If your car is affected, it'll need to have this plate retrofitted at a dealer.
While these issues are worth noting, it's important to remember that the Mini Countryman has a 3.5 out of 5.0 reliability score from RepairPal, indicating that it's generally a reliable vehicle. With proper maintenance, a Mini Cooper Countryman can last over 150,000 miles with little to no problems.

- VIN: WMZYV5C30J3
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My engine malfunctioned after the module under the back seat was wet from an unknown water leak in the vehicle. My vehicle lost power without warning until I came to a complete stop on the side of a very busy highway. I'm not sure if the repair center kept the faulty module or not I would have to check. I know leaks have been a problem with my model in previous years but when I checked my VIN there were no recalls. This is a very dangerous defect and should be fixed.

- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-13
- Date Complaint: 2023-08-14
- VIN: WMZYU7C06L3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: At 11,336 my vehicle started shutting down when I was stopped at intersections, red lights, and in stopped traffic. The vehicle continued to do this until 40,817 when if finally shut down and would not restart and had to be towed back to the dealership. I began reporting the issue at 11,336 and continued to report it to the dealership and finally forced them to do a complete diagnostics at 12,667 to figure out why the vehicle was shutting down. The vehicle was extremely dangerous to operate and I had many near misses with my children in the car every time I had to start my dead car in traffic. Mini/BMW could not identify the problem and sent me on my way. Even at 40,917 miles and tsar engineers could not identify why it shut down so they began swapping out the EME (twice), the high voltage lines, black box and several other components. 5 months of repairing my vehicle they were able to get it running and returned it to me. Since BMW has agreed to buy the car back at a loss to me. I'd make more money trading in but the car is unsafe and I do not want another owner or drivers to be put in danger.

- VIN: WMZYU7C52K3
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: In July 2022, I kept getting a warning that the passenger restraint system is malfunctioning whenever somebody sits on the passenger seat. I brought my car to Mini of Austin and they had the system being reset but the warning came up again a few days later when somebody sat on my passenger seat. In August 2022, I brought my car back to Mini of Austin and a week later they told me that they had to replace the airbag sensor and it would take weeks since they had to order it from Germany. They told me they would let me know when the part arrived but they didn’t tell me that the part had arrived until I asked them in October 2022. I brought my car to Mini of Austin again to have the sensor replaced but after 10 days they told me the replacement that they got was faulty so they had to reorder the replacement and it would take weeks again. I’ve had my car back ever since and the problem got worse. I got the passenger restraint system malfunction warning even when nobody sits on the passenger seat. The seatbelt warning is also always on even when nobody sits there, so I have to buckle the seatbelt at the passenger seat even when nobody sits there in order for the car to not giving me noisy alarms telling me to buckle the seatbelt on the passenger seat when I’m driving on my own. Mini of Austin hasn’t charged me since the car is still under warranty. However, the warranty will end on November 26 2022 and they told me I would have to pay for the service and replacement if the issue comes up again after the warranty ends. I believe that my car is faulty and should have been recalled or at least have my warranty extended in case the issue comes up again not long after the warranty ends.

At the same there was a cloud of smoke that came up from the same side. I pulled my car slowly off into the breakdown lane. Got out of my car to see what happened. The passenger tire was blown out. Had the car towed to Bedford, NH mini. They determined the Right front Coil Spring had snapped and a piece of it blew out the tire. Of note, I had not hit a pothole. They replaced it. I returned to the same place within a week because I heard creaking in the same area of that coil Spring. They inspected it and said it was fine. Between that time and the electrical fire I had the front light bulb on the passenger side replaced as it had burned out. On 7/31 at approximately 5:30am I had called valet parking to bring my car around at the Hotel I had stayed at. My friend noticed that light bulb on the passenger was once again burned out. We got in the car and I noticed the smell of smoke. I looked at my dash quickly and saw nothing. Then I saw smoke coming up from under my hood. Got out to check and noticed flames under my hood. I quickly alerted the desk clerk to call 911. It took approximately 3 minutes for them to arrive. By then the front right end was fully engulfed ing flames.

When I was searching for a smaller SUV, I came across the new Countryman and was pleasantly surprised. Despite its smaller size, Mini has done an amazing job of making the cabin feel spacious and functional. If you're familiar with BMW products, particularly the X1, you'll notice some similarities in the cabin materials and infotainment. The performance is great and it's a lot of fun to drive, although the ride quality matches the sporty driving characteristics. The cabin can be jolted by potholes, but the dynamic damper control can help improve the ride. I was initially skeptical about Mini's reliability, which influenced my decision to lease, but after doing some research, I found that the new engine and chassis are straight off the BMW X1 and have displayed exceptional reliability so far. Overall, I'm highly impressed with the new Countryman, a car that wasn't even on my radar when I started shopping. If you're looking for a car that's engaging to drive while offering compact SUV capacity and capabilities, this is definitely a safe bet.

I'm so glad to hear that you bought this car for your kids and that everyone loves it! It sounds like it has just the right amount of power for inexperienced drivers, and the high-quality finishings and comfortable seating make it even better. Plus, it's great to hear that there's more cargo room than expected for a small SUV.

Vehicle year: 2021
I recently downsized from my larger SUV to the Mini Countryman. Although my previous SUV was not the largest out there, it was still difficult for me to park in tight spaces. I was looking for something smaller and the occasional Mini I saw in my community really caught my eye. My husband was initially concerned about space, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as small as he thought it would be. I have the carbon black Mini Yours interior which is gorgeous, sporty, and very comfortable. The car runs quietly on the electric motor during my short trips and is fun to drive with great get-up-and-go on the highway. I also love the sound of the combustion engine when it kicks in. The rear camera and visibility are great, and I love the app that lets me know the car's charging status, location, and how much gas I have left. Overall, I love this car! The only downsides I have found are that I wish it got a few more miles on the plug-in and that it was expensive to upgrade my electric panel to accommodate the more rapid charge I wanted. However, I am glad I did because it now charges in less than 2 hours. The brakes were a bit grabby in the beginning, but I got used to it and now brake more smoothly. I still haven't taken the time to figure out how to make the infotainment center default to where I last had it, but I love the drive and the looks of this great car. I have had many cars and this one is my favorite so far.

Vehicle year: 2019
The car has a great combination of electric and gas power, which engages automatically whenever you stop and restart the car. There are many things that I like about this vehicle, and a few that could be improved. As a BMW owner since 1989, I was hesitant to switch, but I wanted a vehicle that could handle off-road adventures. Although BMW X models don't typically look like off-road vehicles, I test drove the brand and was impressed. I found the SE model to be the best overall, but the S is a good trade-off. I love the enter/exit height of the vehicle, which makes it easy to get in and out of. The interior is excellent, and the seats are quite comfortable in cloth. The rear lift gate opens easily with a light kick and backing up. Gas mileage depends on how you drive, but I have managed to get into a rhythm. The trick to getting excellent gas mileage is to use the green mode. However, performance is definitely hampered, but it's great to save during solo drives or heavy traffic. Although the car has features to prevent collisions, I was surprised that it didn't include blind spot warnings. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and look forward to more adventures in my new car! When driving in green mode on back roads or in heavy traffic, I like to select 'save the battery' which recharges the battery quite well. I really enjoy the cornering lights because they light up the way when turning. Additionally, I love the car play and the HK sound system!

Vehicle year: 2022
I absolutely love this car! It has a quiet and sporty ride, great acceleration, and is made with awesome materials. The comfortable seats make my 12-mile round trip commute a breeze. Although the brakes can be a bit grabby, you quickly get used to it. The battery to engine transition is seamless, providing a boost in power. The AWD is computer-controlled, which is slightly different from what I'm used to, but it works great on my steep, snow-covered driveway. The backseat is also very comfortable. The only minor issue I have is with the vent selection, which can be a bit annoying to cycle through. However, the sound system is fantastic and the rear hatch works perfectly with the foot activation feature. With an overall MPG of over 80 since I bought the car, including some long road trips, I am confident that I will be buying this car out at the end of my lease!

Although we have driven it for about 2 years and 8 months and have covered 62,000 miles, we have had some issues with it. Recently, the sunroof cable that closes and opens the sunroof broke and since it had 60k miles when we took it, it was out of warranty. We were disappointed to learn that it would cost $850.00 to repair it. Additionally, we were informed that it needed new motor mounts, which would cost $1,500.00. We have also had to replace all four tires, all brakes, and two roots. Recently, we have had to jump start it a few times and have been unable to find a battery for it. We contacted the dealer, but the closest appointment available is 7 days from now. Although we have had some issues with our car, we hope that our experience can help someone avoid making the same mistakes we did.

Owning a Mini can be a fun experience, but it does come with some high maintenance costs. My particular model came with 19' wheels and all the bells and whistles, including self-park, navigation, heads-up display, and upgraded audio. Unfortunately, the car was equipped with summer high-performance tires that left me with only 2mm of tread during an 8k oil change. When I reached out to Mini, they referred me back to the dealer, who was unable to provide a satisfactory answer and informed me that run-flat tires do not come with a mileage warranty. Additionally, the electrical unit on the instrument cluster has had some issues, causing all the lights to come on during a drive. Although the dealership was able to reset it three times, the issue persisted, so I decided to leave it be. The same goes for the foot-kicking trunk lid, which would pop open when I got close to the car before kicking it. After two visits to the dealership, the problem was finally solved. Overall, the Mini is a great-looking car with the driving experience of a BMW. However, it's important to consider the time and money required to maintain it. It's worth noting that even replacing wearable parts like windshield wipers requires buying an extra package.

I recently purchased a Mini hybrid without doing any research beforehand. However, my previous experience with Mini and their dealer was so positive that I didn't hesitate to check out the 2019 hybrid. When I saw the hybrid in the showroom, I was immediately drawn to it. Unfortunately, I didn't fully understand the meaning of the 60+ sticker on the window, which led to some disappointment later on. Have you ever made an impulse purchase only to regret it later? I certainly have. I must warn potential buyers to be cautious when considering the Hybrid Mini. Although I'm not completely satisfied with my purchase, I'm not ready to part with it just yet. Despite the fact that it doesn't get the fuel economy I was hoping for, the dealer has offered to buy it back for a lower price. However, I'm not willing to take such a significant loss. The car has a range of about 30 mpg, which is not ideal for my 74-mile commute to work. It also requires frequent charging and has a small gas tank. On the highway, it's not the most powerful car. I now understand that the 60+ on the sticker doesn't necessarily reflect the car's actual fuel economy. It's just one component of a formula used to estimate fuel economy based on individual driving habits. If you're someone who enjoys zipping from 0-60 in just a few minutes, prioritizes appearance over practicality, or has a grocery store within walking distance, then this car might just be the perfect fit for you! It's cute and gives the illusion of fuel economy. Today, I drove my kid to school in 'Eco Green' mode, covering a round trip of about 3 miles with an average speed of 21 mph and an impressive MPG of 34.4. If you happen to see me on the road, give me a little honk! My car is the one with prominent 'Buyer Beware' signs all over it. I admit, I didn't do my homework before buying this car, so please don't insult me or make unrealistic recommendations. The salesman was a good guy, the dealership is nice, and the car is cute, but I was hoping for a vehicle with better gas mileage and a nicer driving experience. During my test drive, I didn't notice a few things that have become a bit of a nuisance. For example, the toggles are cute but become non-functional if a drink is placed in the cupholder, and the power windows squeal when being lowered. Additionally, the automatic lift gate only works occasionally and only after my shin is covered in grease from attempting to open it. It doesn't work for closing the liftgate at all. The dash is made of a strange material that attracts and holds dust, and the cargo capacity is small when the back seats are up. The owner's manual is not very helpful, and I'm still trying to figure out how to use the online manual. For optimizing mileage, multiple steps are required to program for efficiency, which can be a bit of a hassle while driving. Overall, I'm not completely satisfied with my purchase, but I'm trying to make the best of it. Thanks for understanding!A single button or toggle would be more user-friendly than the confusing controls on the round knob. It seems that Mini recognized this issue, as they included redundant buttons to bypass the knob and quickly access functions such as turning on the radio. It would have been simpler if they had designed the knob to turn on the radio with the on/off button. Although I have 40 years of driving experience, I still struggled with the car's functionality. Mini offered to send a Unicorn Engineer to teach me how to drive it, but I have not heard back from them yet. If you plan to buy this car, be prepared to spend some time at the dealer for a class on how to use it effectively. If you're looking for a car that offers a pleasant driving experience and good fuel economy at an affordable price, you may want to consider other options.

My particular model came with 19' wheels and all the bells and whistles, including self-park, navigation, heads-up display, and upgraded audio. Unfortunately, the car was equipped with summer high-performance tires that wore down to 2mm during an 8k oil change, and the dealer was unable to provide a satisfactory answer. Additionally, the electrical unit on the instrument cluster had some issues, causing all the lights to come on during a drive. Although the dealership was unable to fix the issue, I still enjoy driving my Mini, which has the same drive as a BMW. However, it's important to consider the time and money required to maintain it. For example, replacing wearable parts like windshield wipers now requires purchasing an extra package. Overall, owning a Mini can be a great experience, but it's important to weigh the costs and benefits before making a decision.

This car is a blast to drive and has some really neat features like the interior lights, moon roof, and keyless entry. However, the technology could use some improvement for the price point. Unfortunately, the car did not sync up with the key to keep the driver's settings and Google Maps is not available on the system. Additionally, the Mini Connected app did not function as intended. Despite these setbacks, I am looking forward to returning the car.
