Mini Clubman problems

mini logo

The Mini Clubman is a subcompact executive car engineered and manufactured by German automaker BMW and sold under the Mini marque. The first-generation Clubman was introduced in 2007, as a variant of the Mini Hatch (Hardtop in the US). A commercial version called Clubvan was added to the range in 2012. The current second-generation model has been in production since 2015 and available with front- and all-wheel drive.

History

The use of the name "Clubman" is a departure from Mini tradition. "Clubman" was originally the name given to the 1970s facelift of the classic Mini, which mostly resulted in a squared-off front end, whereas the classic Mini estates had traditionally been named "Traveller" or "Countryman". However, BMW did not initially purchase the rights to use those names, and so decided to call its larger-variant "Clubman", a name which it did own rights to.

Sketches of a new estate version of the Mini were shown at the 2000 Paris Motor Show, and a rendering of the estate concept (internally named EXT), wore the Clubman name on the licence plate. The Clubman started out in development based on the first generation Mini Hatch (R50) before changing to the second gen Hatch (R56).

Common Mini Clubman problems

The MINI Clubman is a popular car model known for its spacious interior and easy handling. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Overheating Engine: The Mini Clubman's low ground clearance makes it susceptible to damage from curbs, which can harm the radiator supports and main coolant hose. If the engine starts to overheat quickly, check these components for damage and replace them as needed.
  • No Rear Parking Alert: The rear parking sensor is a common issue for the Clubman. The alarm sound that indicates proximity to objects when reversing may not work. The solution is to install a new sensor, which is an easy DIY job.
  • AC Failure: The air conditioning unit in the Clubman is prone to failure. The AC may stop working or be slow to switch from hot to cool. In most cases, replacing the AC fan should resolve the issue.
  • Cracked Windscreen: The Mini Clubman is particularly susceptible to windscreen chips, which can lead to cracks over time. These should be addressed promptly to prevent an MOT failure.
  • Loss of Turbocharger (1.6-Litre Diesels): Excessive carbon build-up can cause serious damage to the oil pump, pickup pipe, and turbocharger in 1.6-litre diesel models. The solution is to replace all these parts with the modified version.
  • Rumbling Engine When Accelerating (Estates): The crankshaft bearings in estate models are prone to premature wear, causing a rumbling sound when accelerating. If not replaced quickly, this can lead to significant engine damage. This was the cause of a recall, so if affected, a Mini dealer should replace the bearings for free.
  • Oil Starvation: This issue is common in older Clubman models. The engine may suffer from oil starvation, leading to significant engine damage. Regular oil changes and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
  • Timing Chain Rattle: The timing chain may rattle, especially in older models. This can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Clutch Wear: The clutch may wear out prematurely, especially in models with manual transmissions. Regular maintenance can help prevent this issue.
  • Start-Stop Malfunction: The start-stop system may malfunction, causing issues with starting and stopping the engine. Regular maintenance and updates can help prevent this issue.
  • Bodywork Issues: Dents, scratches, and poor-quality paint repairs are common issues with the Clubman's bodywork. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues.
  • Alloy Wheel Damage: Larger alloy wheels, especially on Cooper S and John Cooper Works models, are susceptible to kerb damage. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
  • Interior Wear: The interior may show signs of wear, especially in models used by families. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent this issue.

In general, regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues. However, some problems, such as engine blowouts and thermostat failures, may require more significant repairs.

  • Summary: Today I started my 2017 Mini Clubman and received a message about a transmission problem. The message showed a car icon and arrows at either end of the car pointed out. The same message has appeared the next five times I started the car on a level surface.

  • Summary: I went into HGreg Nissan of Buena Park/Nissan of Buena Park on [XXX] to look at a car. When I got there, I asked to see the car that they had advertised. Once I signed the necessary paperwork, purchased a bumper-to-bumper warranty as told by the salesperson. I was also told that I would receive a full tank of gas, but I did not. I took that car the Mini Cooper dealership, for a diagnostic test, and was told that there was damage to the engine. The engine light came on, so I had to leave the car at the dealership. Once I purchased the car from the dealership, me as a person who does not understand how dealership processes paperwork and have purchased cars in the past, I have never experienced such blatant disregard for honesty, who deal in deception, and have no moral ethics than with this particular dealership, just for the sale of a car. I received a phone call from a Lady by the name of Alva on 06/28/24 from HGreg Nissan of Buena Park/Nissan of Buena Park which is more than 3 months after the purchase of this vehicle, and she advised me that I needed to come in so that they could do a smog check on the vehicle, and that they let the paperwork expire. This company never processed the necessary paperwork, to the DMV so that this car could be registered to me. This company did not have a smog check done because they knew that it would not pass because the engine light came on. Since that necessary paperwork has not been filed with the DMV the lender of this vehicle is now telling me that they will increase the interest because of this problem. According to CA Law Smog Certifications are required for all sales or title transfers of gasoline-powered vehicles that are four or more years old, and this company did not provide this information to the CA Department of Motor Vehicles. This dealership knew that the engine was faulty which is why they never performed a Smog Check the engine light came on 1 week after it was purchased. • Summary: I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding a 2016 Mini Cooper Clubman S that I purchased in August of the previous year, with 64,000 miles on the odometer. Within just two months of ownership, the vehicle began to exhibit serious mechanical failures. Initially, the water pump failed and had to be replaced. Shortly thereafter, the air conditioning system on the left side malfunctioned. Most alarmingly, the engine suddenly stopped and began to overheat while on the road, necessitating an emergency stop at a nearby mechanic's workshop. The diagnosis revealed a catastrophic engine block failure, with a crack that caused the antifreeze, oil, and possibly fuel to mix—an issue that could potentially lead to a vehicle fire. This vehicle is primarily driven by my wife, who frequently transports our [XXX] son, who is [XXX]. The potential risks had this occurred on a highway are unimaginable and could have led to fatal consequences. Upon discovering these issues, I immediately contacted Mini to inform them of the defect and requested a comprehensive diagnostic examination. I emphasized the possibility that this could be a production line issue, which might affect other vehicles and thereby pose a significant risk to other families. Regrettably, the response I received was dismissive; I was informed that nothing could be done, and my request for a vehicle inspection was outright denied. Given the severity of these issues and the potential risk to human life, I urge your immediate intervention. It is imperative that this matter be revisited and that a thorough investigation into this potential production defect be conducted. Ensuring the safety of all consumers must be a priority, and I respectfully request that my vehicle be inspected at the earliest to prevent any potential future tragedies. Please advise on how we might proceed in this matter. I look forward to your prompt response. Yours sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: My Mini Clubman All4, despite having clocked in a mere 33,000 miles in the past four years, has been plagued with issues concerning its air conditioning system. Initially, I sought assistance from the Mini of Morristown dealership in Morristown, NJ, where my vehicle has been serviced over the years. However, their service proved to be unsatisfactory. Despite reassurances that they had recharged the system and that there were no inherent issues, the problem persisted. Upon contacting them again, I was informed that further diagnostics would be subject to additional charges. Disconcerted, I reached out to Mini's customer service team, only to be met with a reaffirmation that there was little they could do. With no resolution in sight, I sought help from a local independent mechanic, who quickly identified the root cause - a compressor line rubbing against other components, leading to leakage – PART # F56 6453 9209722-04. This diagnosis and the ability to swiftly rectify it contrasts starkly with the inability of the authorized dealership to provide effective solutions. This issue may be indicative of a design flaw requiring a recall to prevent further mishaps that could endanger Mini owners. You are welcome to contact Mini of Morristown, NJ, for all service records associated with this issue. I urge you to take immediate action and rectify this situation, not just for my sake but for the sake of all Mini customers. I HAVE THE PART AND CAN SHIP IT. I ALREADY PROVIDED PICTURES OF THE WEAR IN MY EMAIL. The summer heat with the AC not working is surely a hazard. The issue was confirmed by the independent service center that diagnosed and fixed the problem. The manufacturer has been indifferent thus far. It is only now that I have raised a concern with the company's CEO's office. No warning lamps or messages appeared. The Mini team has been incompetent in addressing the issue.

  • Summary: The Roll Warning light for my 2017 Clubman came on with this message: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center. The light came on Saturday evening when I got into my car to go home from a friend's house. It was parked on the side of the street. It comes on now whenever it's parked and I am turning on my emergency brake but the car has not rolled. A friend of mine has a 2017 Mini Cooper 4 door and this same light came on for her the same week mine did. I've also found others posting about it online. All 2017 mini coopers. I went to the dealer (Dreyer & Reinbold of Indianapolis) and they told me 99% of the time the gear shifter assembly would need to be replaced at a cost of $2,100 plus tax and shop supplies. This seems like a problem Mini needs to pay for.

Latest negative Mini Clubman car reviews

  1. Simeon Hermann 2024-11-27

    Vehicle year: 2019

I have been leasing cars for over 15 years now and I have noticed that some manufacturers are equipping their cars with components that require replacement within the initial lease period. For instance, when I leased a Mercedes Benz GLK 350, I had to replace the tires after just 25K miles. Currently, I am leasing a Mini Cooper Clubman S All-4 with 23K miles and it needs front brakes rotors and wear sensors (estimated at $800+ at the dealer). It also seems like I will need new tires soon to make it to the end of my lease. As someone who leases cars to avoid unexpected expenses, this is quite concerning. In the past, I have owned multiple vehicles that were 4+ years old and had 40K+ miles before needing new tires or brakes. It appears that some manufacturers are equipping new vehicles with substandard performing parts and tires, which is a negative trend.

  2. Kayden Dickens 2024-09-29

    Vehicle year: 2018

The Clubman was redesigned for 2016. Although it's a nice car, it's unfortunate that one of the few perks of the previous model, fuel efficiency, is not as prominently displayed on the miniusa website. The new engine (3 cylinder!) has resulted in a lower MPG of 23 in the city, which is comparable to some larger sport utility vehicles, but still lower than the previous model. Despite this, as someone who has owned three MINI's, I can say that I am not a MINI basher. While there are other vehicles that offer more for less money, the Clubman still has its unique benefits, such as its distinctive appearance and easy-to-spot location in a parking lot. It's worth noting that we have an ALL4 base model, which is not listed among the choices here.

Despite this, as someone who has owned three MINIs, including a previous Clubman that got 32 mpg on the same route to work, I can say that I am not a MINI basher. However, it's understandable to consider other vehicles that offer more for less money. On the bright side, the Clubman has a unique look and is easy to spot in a parking lot. It's worth noting that we have an ALL4 base model, which is not listed among the choices here.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my thoughts on the 2018 Clubman. In my experience, it handles more like a Mini than my previous 2015 Countryman did. While it's not quite like our 2013 Mini 2 door, it's not far off. I've found that the ride is vastly better than any Mini I've owned, and the interior is great. Plus, the little 3 cylinder turbo is surprisingly good due to its torque. I definitely miss the brute power of the 4 cylinder turbo in my Countryman S, but the Clubman with the 3 cylinder doesn't give you any torque steer problems you get in the S Models. It's actually better on fuel than the expected ratings, and I see slightly over 34 mpg routinely, even at FL highway speeds (aka Fast!). The only downside compared to the Countryman is that the rear seat is stationary, so it doesn't slide back and forth to give extra leg room and has no recline adjustment. That said, it really doesn't need the slide option since rear leg room is pretty impressive for a small car, but the reclining option would be nice. Overall, I think it's a great little car that does a lot of things well. Thanks for reading!

This car is perfect for a group of four adults, with plenty of room in the boot for luggage, packages or groceries. But what really sets this Mini apart is its ability to provide an exciting and spirited drive. The handling is spot on, the engine performs flawlessly and sounds great. There are many options available if you want to customize your ride, but they can be a bit pricey. However, the car feels solid, looks great and has many little details that you'll appreciate even more after driving it for a while.
