2005 Mercury Monterey problems

The Mercury Monterey is a series of full-size cars that were manufactured and marketed by the Mercury division of Ford from 1950 to 1974. Deriving its name from Monterey Bay, the initial Mercury Monterey served as the top-of-the-line two-door sedan model for 1950 and 1951 to compete with the hardtop models of Oldsmobile and Buick. It came with a vinyl roof covering, upgraded upholstery, and other features. The hardtop was introduced for 1952. During its production, the Monterey would be offered in multiple body styles, ranging from coupes, convertibles, sedans, hardtops, and station wagons.
Over its 22 years of production, the Monterey served variously as the flagship, mid-range, and entry-level offering of the full-size Mercury product range. The only Mercury nameplate to be in continuous production throughout the 1960s, the Monterey was positioned above the Medalist, Custom, and Meteor; later, it was positioned below the Turnpike Cruiser, Montclair, Park Lane, and finally the Marquis.
Following the 1974 model year, Mercury discontinued the Monterey, consolidating its full-size range down to the Marquis and Colony Park station wagon. For 2004, the Monterey nameplate was revived, becoming the counterpart of the Ford Freestar minivan; it was produced through the 2007 model year.

Common 2005 Mercury Monterey problems
The Mercury Monterey, produced between 2004 and 2007, is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily revolve around the transmission, electrical system, and interior components.
- Transmission Failure: The Monterey has experienced a significant number of transmission-related issues, with 17 complaints across the 2004-2007 model years. The most common problems include transmission failure in the 2005 Monterey (7 complaints) and transmission going out in the 2004 Monterey (6 complaints). This issue can lead to a sudden loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Electrical System: The Monterey has had 4 complaints related to the electrical system, indicating potential issues with the vehicle's electrical components. These problems can range from minor inconveniences to more serious safety concerns.
- Interior Components: The Monterey has also received 3 complaints about interior components, suggesting that there may be issues with the vehicle's interior quality and durability. This can affect the overall user experience and satisfaction with the vehicle.
In addition to these issues, the Monterey has also faced a recall for torque converter output shaft failure in 2004 and 2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles. This issue can lead to a sudden loss of motive power with no warning, increasing the risk of a crash.
The Monterey's reliability is ranked 9th out of 14 Mercury models, indicating that there may be some issues with the vehicle's overall durability and longevity.
While the Monterey offered many useful features such as removable second-row seats, double sliding doors, and fold-flat third-row seats, it lacked a tough, outdoorsy image that could appeal to younger buyers. This, combined with the vehicle's reliability issues, likely contributed to its weak sales and eventual discontinuation.
In summary, the Mercury Monterey has experienced several common problems related to the transmission, electrical system, and interior components. While Ford had addressed many of the mechanical weaknesses of the vehicle by 2005, the Monterey's reliability issues and lack of appeal to younger buyers likely contributed to its weak sales and discontinuation.

AFTER COASTING TO SHOULDER, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT ENGAGE IN ANY FORWARD OR REVERSE GEAR. THIS SERIOUS SAFETY DEFECT COULD HAVE LEAD TO THE DEATH OF MYSELF AND MY FAMILY OF FIVE. TOWED VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHO TOLD US THEY WERE AWARE OF A RECALL FOR THE 2005 MERCURY MONTEREY REGARDING THAT ISSUE AND FORD'S RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER IS 11S25. THE RECALL DESCRIBED THIS EXACT FAILURE. ("SUMMARY: FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 FORD FREESTAR AND MERCURY MONTEREY VEHICLES. THE TORQUE CONVERTER OUTPUT SHAFT MAY FAIL.") HOWEVER, AFTER THEY ENTERED THE VIN NUMBER FOR MY VEHICLE, THEY SAID THE RECALL WAS NOT EXTENDED TO THAT VEHICLE. THAT IS WRONG SINCE THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND WOULD CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-10
- VIN: 2MRDA23225B
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY ROAD I STARTED TO LOSE POWER AND COULD NOT GO OVER 30 MPH. I COASTED HOME AND HAD TO CALL A TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP, WILLIAMSBURG FORD. THE DEALER CONFIRMED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE IN 2012 FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER WHICH WAS REPLACED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. HOWEVER, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THE DAMAGE WAS ALREADY DONE AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AT 70000 MILES WHICH SHOULD NOT HAPPEN ON ANY CAR. I SENT YOU AN EMAIL PREVIOUSLY ON THIS ISSUE AND HAVE NOT HEARD BACK. I CALLED FORD AND THEY SAID THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THIS IS NOT RIGHT AND SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE. THEY SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-11-08
- VIN: 2MDRDA22225
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I WAS STOPPED AT A FOUR WAY STOP SIGN IN MY 2005 MERCURY MONTEREY. JUST AS I PRESSED ON THE GAS TO MOVE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, THE TRANSMISSION LET GO. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I COULD COAST OUT OF HARMS WAY. THE CAR IS NOW IMMOBLIE. THIS IS THE SECOND CATASTROPHIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON THIS VEHICLE. TRANSMISSION FAILED IN JULY 2012 AT 109K MILES. CAR WAS REPAIRED ACCORDING TO FORD SPECIFICATIONS. SECOND FAILURE ON 11-8-2016 AT 170K MILES. WITHOUT WARNING THE TRANSMISSION DISENGAGES AND THE CAR DOES NOT MOVE FORWARD. A SECOND FAILURE RELATED TO THE SAME ISSUE 60K MILES AFTER THE DEFECT WAS ALLEGEDLY CORRECTED IS UNACCEPTABLE.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-07
- VIN: 2MRDA23225B
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT ON THIS VEHICLE ABOUT TWO WEEKS AGO. I WANTED TO ADD SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. JUST TO RECAP: THIS 2005 MERCURY MONTEREY WAS RECALLED IN 2012 FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTOR. THE JOB WAS COMPLETED AT A DEALERSHIP BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER WHEN IT HAD LESS THAN 30000 MILES. THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AGAIN AT 70000 MILES. TRAVELING DOWN A BUSY ROAD I LOST POWER AND COULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 30MPH AND THE RPM'S JUMPED ERRATICALLY AND THE TRANSAXLE LIGHT CAME ON. TOWED IT TO THE DEALER THAT CONFIRMED IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION AND THEN TOWED IT TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST. THEY SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS SHOT AND REPLACED THE FOLLOWING PARTS: MASTER OH KIT, BAND, PISTON, SERVO, TORQUE CONVERTOR. THE TOTAL COST WAS $1814.00. THE MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED AT 70000 MILES AND JUST A FEW YEARS AFTER THE RECALL. THE ORIGINAL TORQUE CONVERTOR MUST HAVE DONE MORE DAMAGE THAN WHAT WAS REPAIRED IN 2012. I FEEL THAT FORD SHOULD PAY FOR THE TRANSMISSION REBUILD AS IT IS OBVIOUSLY A RESULT OF THE ORIGINAL RECALL.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-07
- VIN: 2MRDA23225B
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS THE CAR SHUTTERED BETWEEN 40 AND 50 MPH. THEN, WHILE DRIVING ON A BUSY ROAD TRAVELING ABOUT 45 MILES PER HOUR, I BEGAN TO LOSE POWER, THE RPM'S JUMPED ERRATICALLY, AND THE TRANSAXLE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING. I TOOK THE CAR TO WIILIAMSBURG FORD (DEALERSHIP) AND THEY DID A DIAGNOSTIC THAT INDICATED A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM 3RD AND 4TH GEAR. I CONTACTED FORD AS THERE WAS A TORQUE CONVERTOR RECALL BECAUSE OF A FAULTY PART CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION. THEY SAID THE TORQUE CONVERTOR WAS REPLACED IN AUG. OF 2012 BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER UNDER THE RECALL. IF THAT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED AT 70000 MILES. THE TORQUE CONVERTOR MOST LIKELY DAMAGED THE TRANSMISSION BEFORE IT WAS REPLACED AND SHORTENED THE LIFE. FORD IS TELLING ME THAT THEY WILL NOT COVER THIS SINCE THE TORQUE CONVERTOR WAS REPLACED BUT THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF IT WAS DONE CORRECTLY. *TR

- Summary: YOU'LL BE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET OR HIGHWAY AND IT ALL OF SUDDEN IT LOSES POWER AND THE LIGHT THAT MEANS TRANSAXLE PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND SHIFTING MAY BE RESTRICTED. HAVE SYSTEM SERVICES IMMEDIATELY IF LIGHT REMAINS ON. I LOOKED IT UP WITH MY VIN NUMBER AND I KNOW THERE IS A RECALL DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. I LOOKED IT UP ON A SITE AND IT SAID IT HADN'T BEEN FIXED AND I CALLED ONE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THEY DON'T SEE WHERE IT HAD BEEN FIXED EITHER. THEN ALL OF SUDDEN WHEN I DISCOVER ANOTHER DEALERSHIP THAT IS CLOSER TO ME A COUPLE DAYS LATER AND DECIDED TO CALL THEM TO SEE IF THEY COULD GET ME IN INSTEAD OF THE FIRST DEALERSHIP CAUSE IT WAS CLOSER TO MY HOUSE THEY ALL OF SUDDEN SAY IT WAS ALREADY HAD BEEN FIXED BACK IN 2012. WHICH IS BULL CAUSE I LOOKED IT UP ON A SITE AND IT SAID IT HADN'T AND THE FIRST DEALERSHIP ALSO SAID IT HADN'T BUT NOW TWO OR THEE SAYS LATER IT'S STRANGELY IN THE SYSTEM WHEN I CALL THE SECOND DEALERSHIP THAT I CALLED CAUSE IT WAS CLOSER. THAT IS VERY STRANGE AND IRONIC THAT ALL OF SUDDEN IT'S NOW IN SYSTEM THAT IT'S BEEN REPAIRED.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-09-29
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: IT WAS RAINING AND MY VEHICLE KEPT GOING INTO NEUTRAL AND STALLING. I'D PRESS THE GAS, NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. IT WOULDN'T GO INTO REVERSE. WHEN I PUT IT IN NEUTRAL THE ENGINE JUST REVVED UP. PUTTING IT PARK WAS OK. CHECK ENGINE CODES P0715 AND P0340 APPEARED. A FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (!), AND SOLID CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. PUTTING IN DRIVE, IT WOULD ONLY GO INTO 3RD GEAR. 1ST GEAR WORKED IF I MOVED THE PRNDL TO 1. REVERSE DIDN'T WORK AT ALL. I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN KILLED IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ANYWHERE BUT MY NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM THE RECENT TORQUE CONVERTER RECALL THAT IS ALSO SCARY AND ALSO RESULTS IN LOSS OF FORWARD MOMENTUM. MY PROBLEM IS WITH THE PCM. THE DEALER PERFORMED DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIRS ACCORDING TO FORD'S TSB 06-14-10 WHICH INDICATES THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON ALL 1999-2007 FORD VANS. IF THEY'VE KNOWN ABOUT THIS FOR 7 YEARS, AND IT AFFECTS NEARLY A MILLION VEHICLES, WHY HASN'T IT BEEN RECALLED? SURELY NHTSA HAS RECEIVED COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAD THIS HAPPEN ON HER 2004 FORD VAN WITHIN THE LAST YEAR. SHE ALSO LOST REVERSE AND THE CAR WOULD LIMP IN DRIVE JUST LIKE MINE DID. THE REPAIR SHOP KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO AND REPAIRED HER PCM. I'VE ASKED HER TO FILE A NHTSA COMPLAINT AS WELL. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN. I PAID MY FORD DEALER TO FIX BECAUSE MY SAFETY IS AT STAKE, AND OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS PERFORMING SUB-PAR, BUT I FEEL THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE SHOULD BE COVERED BY FORD, NOT BY THE CUSTOMER, JUST AS WAS DONE WITH THE RECENT REAR SEAT RUST AND TORQUE CONVERTER RECALLS ON THIS SAME VEHICLE. THIS IS NO DIFFERENT. IT IS BEYOND NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. *TR
2005 Mercury Monterey recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2005 Mercury Monterey.
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: SEATS

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that your van has been running well with only a minor issue of replacing a lock on a sliding door. It's great that you just replaced the brakes and tires this month and are getting 21 mpg overall, especially with half of your driving being on the highway. It sounds like you and your wife still enjoy the looks and comfort of the van on road trips. The engine's torque and acceleration seem impressive, especially for passing in the 45-60 mph range. Additionally, the advance trac feature sounds like it really helps keep the van stable on the road.

It's great and fun to drive!

A nice step up from a Windstar SEL. The new model boasts better features, more power, and improved transmission. The ride is smoother and the interior is quieter. We are thrilled with the improvements!

So far so good! I'm glad to hear that the vehicle seems to be finished perfectly, despite the slight paint blemish. It's great to hear that the ride is comfortable, handling is predictable, and pick-up is better than expected. I also love the overall features, including the heated seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and great sound system.

The Monterey feels and drives like a sedan with all the room that you expect from a mini-van.

The Alternator had to be replaced several times and the power locks have been refusing to unlock or lock. Unfortunately, the car has rusted quite a bit, even to the point where the back seats wouldn't hold. Additionally, the key lock on the front door fell off the door frame and the acceleration is not great. There have also been some electrical issues, such as the outlet failing and the front left window sometimes not opening. Overall, it's not the best car out there.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Mercury Monterey. Although I've never written a car review before, I felt it was important to do so for this one. I purchased the van with 38,000 miles and it now has 53,000. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it, such as the air conditioner going out this week and other problems occurring at least once a month. As someone who values good service and takes care of my cars, I have to say I'm disappointed with this vehicle. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. As a 20-year police officer, I'm even considering selling all of my Ford products because of this experience. I hope this review helps others make an informed decision. Thank you for reading!

Hello, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the van I purchased 7 months ago. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it, including having to replace the wheel bearings and hubs due to a recall. Additionally, the front brakes warped at 15000 miles (90% of which were highway miles), and it wasn't covered under warranty. Although they cut the rotors to stop the vibration, they warped again after only 2000 miles. I ended up taking the van to my own mechanic and spending $400 on front rotors and brakes. Now, the rear brakes need to be replaced, which will cost another $400. As someone who has been in sales for the last 15 years and has driven many different vans, I have never had this many problems with any van this soon. I just wanted to give you a heads up. Thank you for your time. BUYER BEWARE! By the way, I also noticed that the front windshield has a stress crack.

The build quality could be improved as I have had to replace several parts in just 28K miles, including new tires, new rear brakes, a new traction control chip, and a new windshield wiper cowl. Additionally, the power doors have required adjustment three times already. The gas mileage is also not ideal, with only 14 miles per gallon in the city and 17 on the highway, which is lower than the dealer's promised 18/23. The interior materials could also be of better quality. However, I did manage to purchase the car at a great discount of $15K off the list price, which was a great bargain.

We recently traded in our 2000 Olds Silhouette for the Monterey, but we have been a bit disappointed with the comparison. Although the van looks great, we have noticed that the gas mileage is not as good as we had hoped. We are currently averaging 14 miles per gallon around town and about 19 on trips. Additionally, we have noticed that the interior noise is much louder than our previous vehicle. We also need to note that when the rear DVD player screen is in use, it can block the driver's view from the rearview mirror, which was not an issue with our Oldsmobile. Lastly, we have found the auto climate control to be a bit confusing when setting temperatures for the driver, passenger, and rear. The fan speed cuts back too soon, leaving the car feeling uncomfortable. Overall, we are still getting used to the Monterey, but we hope to find ways to improve our experience with it.
