Mercury Monterey problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Monterey is a series of full-size cars that were manufactured and marketed by the Mercury division of Ford from 1950 to 1974. Deriving its name from Monterey Bay, the initial Mercury Monterey served as the top-of-the-line two-door sedan model for 1950 and 1951 to compete with the hardtop models of Oldsmobile and Buick. It came with a vinyl roof covering, upgraded upholstery, and other features. The hardtop was introduced for 1952. During its production, the Monterey would be offered in multiple body styles, ranging from coupes, convertibles, sedans, hardtops, and station wagons.

Over its 22 years of production, the Monterey served variously as the flagship, mid-range, and entry-level offering of the full-size Mercury product range. The only Mercury nameplate to be in continuous production throughout the 1960s, the Monterey was positioned above the Medalist, Custom, and Meteor; later, it was positioned below the Turnpike Cruiser, Montclair, Park Lane, and finally the Marquis.

Following the 1974 model year, Mercury discontinued the Monterey, consolidating its full-size range down to the Marquis and Colony Park station wagon. For 2004, the Monterey nameplate was revived, becoming the counterpart of the Ford Freestar minivan; it was produced through the 2007 model year.

Common Mercury Monterey problems

The Mercury Monterey, a minivan produced by Ford for the Mercury brand, has been criticized for several common problems by its owners. These issues range from mechanical faults to design flaws, affecting the overall driving experience and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Crappy Handling and Brakes: The Mercury Monterey is often criticized for its poor handling and braking performance. This can be attributed to the vehicle's design and suspension system, which may not provide the necessary stability and responsiveness during driving, especially at high speeds or in emergency situations.
  • Plasticky Interior: The interior of the Mercury Monterey is often criticized for its low-quality materials, particularly the extensive use of plastics. This can lead to a cheap and unappealing appearance, as well as reduced durability and longevity of the interior components.
  • Poor Sales Performance and Lack of Interest: The Mercury Monterey suffered from weak sales and a lack of interest from buyers, which eventually led to the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2011. This can be attributed to several factors, including the vehicle's poor image, lack of unique features, and competition from other, more popular minivans in the market.
  • Mechanical Weaknesses: While Ford had addressed many of the mechanical weaknesses of the Windstar/Freestar/Monterey by 2005, some issues may still persist, affecting the overall reliability and durability of the vehicle.
  • Lack of Tough, Outdoorsy Image: The Mercury Monterey failed to appeal to younger buyers who sought a more rugged and outdoorsy image, leading to a lack of interest in the vehicle.
  • Limited Appeal to Remaining Mercury Buyers: The Mercury Monterey did not attract many buyers under 80 years old, who instead opted for the cramped and bouncy Mariner or the more traditional Grand Marquis.
  • Recalls: The Mercury Monterey has been subject to several recalls, with the most common one being the Torque Converter Output Shaft May Fail. This recall affects the powertrain of the vehicle and can lead to serious consequences if not addressed promptly.

In conclusion, the Mercury Monterey has faced several common problems that have affected its reliability, performance, and appeal to buyers. These issues range from mechanical faults to design flaws, leading to poor sales and a lack of interest in the vehicle.

  • Summary: MY FAMILY WAS TRAVELING ON THE I-65 SOUTH INTERSTATE AND THE VAN, 2006 MERCURY MONTEREY, STOP RESPONDING IN THE MIDDLE OF FAST TRAFFIC. IT TOOK ME BY TOTAL SURPRISE. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. SO, I INITIALLY THOUGHT IT HAD ACCIDENTLY WENT IN NEUTRAL BUT THAT WASN'T THE CASE. I TRIED A LOWER GEAR WITH NOT LUCK. NOT WANTING TO BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE I THEN TURNED ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND FRANTICALLY MANEUVERED THE VAN TO THE SIDE OF THE BUSY INTERSTATE ROAD. ONCE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD MY HUSBAND TRIED EVERY GEAR AND THE VAN WASN'T RESPONDING IN ANY OF THEM. WE ENDED UP GETTING IT TOWED TO OUR HOUSE. AFTER WE GOT HOME MY HUSBAND STARTED RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM BECAUSE HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF A VEHICLE STOP RESPONDING LIKE THAT WITHOUT ANY WARNING SIGNS. HE SAID THIS HAS TO BE VEHICLE DEFECT AND LOOKED UP RECALLS FOR THE VAN ON THE NHTSA.ORG WEBSITE. THERE WASN'T A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE BUT THERE WERE PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS EXACT SAFETY ISSUE. AFTER DOING MORE RESEARCH WE FOUND THAT THE 2004 MODEL OF THIS VAN HAD THE SAME ISSUE WHICH FORD DID DO A RECALL FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THE FORD COMPANY NEEDS TO BE IMMEDIATELY NOTIFIED THAT THIS IS ALSO A BIG SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE 2006 MODEL. ONE THE REASONS MY HUSBAND BOUGHT THE VEHICLE WAS BECAUSE IT WAS BUILT BY FORD AND HE TRUSTED THEIR PRODUCTS. I HOPE FORD WILL TAKE THE COMPLAINT SERIOUSLY AND STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND GET THIS SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER ON THE MERCURY MONTEREY 2006 VEHICLES RESOLVED QUICKLY.

  • Summary: OUR VAN WAS DRIVING JUST FINE AND SUDDENLY, WITH NO WARNING AT ALL, WENT INTO NEUTRAL, STOPPING IN AN INTERSECTION. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS AROUND 88000 MILES ON IT. IT WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, AND THE LINCOLN DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE TORQUE CONVERTER HAD FAILED. I NOTICED FORD HAD ALREADY RECALLED ALL OF THE 2004 FREESTARS AND 2005 MONTEREYS FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT YET SOMEHOW MY 2006 WITH A SEPTEMBER 2005 BUILD DATE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. SO GUESS WHAT? FORD KNOWINGLY LEFT ME IN AN UNSAFE VEHICLE, AND NOW I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR BILL. FORD SO VERY CLEARLY KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM AND NEVER CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY THE TIME BY VEHICLE WAS BUILT. NHTSA NEEDS TO ENCOURAGE FORD TO RECALL ALL THE 2006 AND PROBABLY ALL THE 2007S AS WELL. FORD SHOULD BE PAYING FOR MY REPAIR, NOT ME.

  1. Arch Harvey 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2004

We recently traded in our 2000 Olds Silhouette for the Monterey, but we have been a bit disappointed with the comparison. Although the van looks great, we have noticed that the gas mileage is not as good as we had hoped. We are currently averaging 14 miles per gallon around town and about 19 on trips. Additionally, we have noticed that the Monterey is much louder than our Silhouette, with more engine and road noise. We also found that the rear DVD player screen blocks the driver's view from the rearview mirror, which was not an issue with our Oldsmobile. Lastly, we found the auto climate control to be a bit confusing when setting temperatures for the driver, passenger, and rear. The fan speed cuts back too soon, leaving the car feeling uncomfortable. Overall, we have had some issues with the Monterey, but we are hopeful that these can be resolved.

  2. Merle Gaylord 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2004

We purchased a 2004 used car with low mileage that was certified and inexpensive. Although we got a good deal on the price, our experience with the car has been less than ideal. We have had to replace the heated seats twice, and the transmission failed at only 35k miles. We also experienced a series of problems with the emissions, which unfortunately were not covered by the extended warranty that came with the certified car. The car has a clunky transmission, a loud ride, brake problems, and issues with the auto door closing mechanism. Every other option on this car has had some sort of problem or another. While many of the issues were thankfully covered under warranty, it has been a constant hassle to have the car in the shop, and there is always some sort of fee that is charged. We hope that our experience can help others make a more informed decision when purchasing a car.

We purchased our 2006 van in 2018 with low mileage. Although it shows its age compared to newer vehicles, my wife absolutely loves it, especially the heated and cooled front seats. At 6'1

    Vehicle year: 2005

Hello, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the van I purchased 7 months ago. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it, including having to replace the wheel bearings and hubs due to a recall. Additionally, the front brakes warped at 15000 miles (90% of which were highway miles), and it wasn't covered under warranty. Although they cut the rotors to stop the vibration, they warped again after only 2000 miles. I ended up taking the van to my own mechanic and spending $400 on front rotors and brakes. Now, the rear brakes need to be replaced, which will cost another $400. As someone who has been in sales for the last 15 years and has driven many different vans, I have never had this many problems with any van this soon. I just wanted to give you a heads up. Thank you for your time. BUYER BEWARE! By the way, I also noticed that the front windshield has a stress crack.

  5. Lawrence Brown 2024-08-20

    Vehicle year: 2004

The build quality could be improved as I have had to replace several parts in just 28K miles, including new tires, new rear brakes, a new traction control chip, and a new windshield wiper cowl. Additionally, the power doors have required adjustment three times already. The gas mileage is also not ideal, with only 14 miles per gallon in the city and 17 on the highway, which is lower than the dealer's promised 18/23. The interior materials could also be of better quality. However, I did manage to purchase the car at a great discount of $15K off the list price, which was a great bargain.

If you live in the South, such as Florida, you'll know that the cooled perforated leather seats are a must-have feature in a van. Luckily, this is the only van that offers them. You'll also appreciate the other great features, such as power doors, an ultra-quiet highway ride, a compass, a dimming rear-view mirror, memory seats, pedals, mirrors, and more. You can even program your own code into the keyless door entry, so the seats adjust to you or your spouse when you enter your code to unlock the door. It's simply awesome! The workers at the plant in Canada are incredibly detail-oriented and have done an excellent job with quality.

I have owned both Dodge and Ford minivans in the past. This Mercury is a great improvement over my previous Ford Windstar vans and a world of difference over the Dodge, which was the worst vehicle I have ever owned. While my friends prefer the new Honda's and Toyota minivans, I find them way too expensive. The Honda is far noisier, the power is not as good as the Mercury, and the mileage is about the same. Also, I was able to buy the Mercury for over $3000 less with the same features as the Honda. I, for one, cannot justify the higher prices for the Honda and Toyota.

It's also convenient that everything is easily accessible with just the push of a button. It's clear that you really enjoy your van and it's great to hear that you receive compliments on it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

So far so good! I'm glad to hear that the vehicle seems to be finished perfectly, despite the slight paint blemish. It's great to hear that the ride is comfortable, handling is predictable, and pick-up is better than expected. I also love the overall features, including the heated seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and great sound system.

Wowza!! The minivan really exceeded my expectations. I didn't have any pre-conceived notions, BUT the van is a JEWEL. I bought it as a corporate lease with 62,000 miles and now it has 100,800 miles, but it's still in very good condition. The dealer in Knox. said it's in very good condition, BUT the age hurts its re-sale value. I think it's worth more due to its condition. It's a Luxury Edition with all the bells and whistles, even for the 2006 model year.
