2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.
In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.
First generation (1995–2006, T1N)
Europe
The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.
The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500, several common problems have been identified:
- Glow Plug Failures: Glow plugs in T1N Sprinters can seize into the cylinder head, making replacement a major repair. The Engine Control Module monitors the glow plugs and can issue fault codes, but these codes are not always accurate indicators of glow plug problems.
- Harmonic Balancer Issues: Common in 2001-2005 models, this problem manifests as rough engine running, excessive vibration, damaged sensors, and leaking crankshaft seals. Identifying this issue accurately can be challenging due to various symptoms.
- Drive Shafts and Universals: Problems with drive shafts and universal joints can be costly to repair in Sprinter vans compared to domestic vans. It is essential to have a mechanic inspect these components thoroughly.
- Turbo Resonator Failure: Particularly on heavily-loaded 2004-2006 Sprinter RV conversions, the plastic turbo resonators are prone to failure. Replacing the resonator with an aluminum or OEM part is recommended to address this issue.
- Limp Mode and Power Loss: Limp Mode is a safety feature that activates to protect the engine from damage. Issues like EGR problems, faulty oxygen sensors, or intercooler leaks can trigger Limp Mode, reducing engine power to prevent further damage.
- DEF Heater Failure: The Diesel Emission Fluid heater can fail, leading to engine warning lights. This issue is more prevalent in colder months when the fluid can freeze, causing potential problems with the emission system.
- Turbo Resonator Air Leak: The original Turbo Resonators in Sprinter vans are known for problematic seals and O-Rings, often leading to air leaks. Detecting and addressing this issue promptly is crucial to prevent further damage to the turbo system.
These common problems with the 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and thorough inspections to address potential issues before they escalate.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-12-02
- VIN: WD0PD744265
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE LEFT DRIVERS SIDE ELECTRIC WINDOW HAS A BROKEN PIECE OF NYLON/PLASTIC THAT IS ABOUT 11/2" X 1/2", THAT IS HELD IN PLACE BY A RIVET THAT APPEARS TO LOOK LIKE A NAIL HEAD ON THE METAL WINDOW REGULATOR ARM. THIS FLIMSY PLASTIC PART BROKE INTO TWO PIECES WHICH ALLOWS THE ARM OF THE WINDOW REGULATOR TO POP OUT OF THE TRACK BELOW THE WINDOW, AND THE WINDOW FALLS DOWN AND STAYS OPEN. WHEN THIS HAPPENS IT CREATES NOISE, ALLOWS BAD WEATHER TO ENTER THE VEHICLE, AND CREATES A VERY DISTRACTING SITUATION FOR DRIVING, ESPECIALLY ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS SMALL PART ONLY A NEW REGULATOR WITH THE SAME FLIMSY PIECE OF PLASTIC. THE WINDOW REGULATOR COSTS BETWEEN $219 AND $224 PLUS TAX AND SHIPPING. THE COST TO INSTALL IT IS ANOTHER 200+ DOLLARS. THIS REGULATOR SUFFERS FROM POOR DESIGN AND SHOULD NOT BREAK ON A VEHICLE (RV) THAT IS NOT USED LIKE PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION VEHICLE. MY WINDOW OPENED SLOWLY AT 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY.

- Summary: I BOUGHT THIS VAN NEW IN APRIL 2006. THE VAN CAME WITH AN E.O.M. ROOF A/C WHICH IS THE CAUSE FOR THE VEHICLE STALLING WHEN DECELERATING. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 2 MONTHS AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VAN. I REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT DODGE WAS AWARE OF IT AND WOULD ISSUE A RECALL AS SOON AS IT HAS A FIX - IT NEVER DID. THE CURRENT ODOMETER READING IS 35,125 MILES. THE VAN WAS MOSTLY DRIVEN SHORT DISTANCES AS I USE IT MAINLY TO TRANSPORT MY WHEELCHAIR BOUND DAUGHTER TO AND FROM DOCTORS AND HOSPITALS VISITS.TIME WENT BY UNTIL IT HAPPENED AGAIN. IT APPEARED THAT THE STALLING, THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF WHEN THE ROOF A/C IS RUNNING WHILE THE ENGINE IS AT A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE. I CONTACTED DODGE WHICH TOLD ME THAT MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $1000 TO INSTALL THE "REAR A/C IDLE CUTOUT MODULE". AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCHES, I FOUND OUT THAT THERE WAS A DODGE SERVICE BULLETIN # 24-001-2009 DATED APRIL 24, 2009 WITH SUBJECT: IDLE INSTABILITY - REAR A/C IDLE CUTOUT MODULE INSTALLATION. IN MY OPINION THE STALLING WAS CAUSED BY A DESIGN FLAW WHICH THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD FIX REGARDLESS OF THE WARRANTY TIME LIMIT. COULD YOU HELP US WITH THIS ISSUE? *JS

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-09-17
- VIN: WD0PD644965
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: RESONATOR FAILED AT 15,200 MILES CAUSING A DANGEROUS SITUATION. MY SPRINTER WAS PURCHASED FROM MAXWELL DODGE IN AUSTIN TX ON MY BEHALF BY SPORTSMOBILE IN AUSTIN WHO DID AN RV CONVERSION ON IT. THE NEAREST AUTHORIZED DEALER FROM MY HOME IS MOSS BROTHERS DODGE IN SAN BERNARDINO CA THEY REPLACED THE RESONATOR ON 9/18/09 WITH MILEAGE AT L5,308. WITH REPORTS OF MULTIPLE FAILURES, INCLUDING FAILURES OF A NEWER REVISION, I AM CONCERNED FOR MY SAFETY AND OTHERS. MY VAN IS USED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CAMPING, USUALLY IN REMOTE MOUNTAIN AREAS WITH NARROW STEEP ROADS, OFTEN WITHOUT GUARD RAILS WHICH DO NOT HAVE AREAS TO PULL OVER OR PASS. THIS WOULD ENDANGER LIVES IN THE EVENT OF A RESONATOR FAILURE WHICH MAKES THE VEHICLE INCAPABLE OF MOVING ON AN INCLINE AS WELL AS DANGEROUS ON A FREEWAY WHEN IT SUDDENLY LOSES POWER. IN MY RESEARCH I FOUND AN ALUMINUM RESONATOR WHICH ELIMINATES THE PROBLEM. MOSS BROTHERS DODGE TOLD ME THEY HAVE INSTALLED THIS RESONATOR, HOWEVER THE CUSTOMER HAS TO PROVIDE IT AND SIGN A WAIVER BECAUSE IT DOES NOT HAVE A FILTER. IF A PROBLEM OCCURS WITH THE TURBO WHICH IS DETERMINED TO BE CAUSED BY PARTICLES THAT GOT THROUGH THE SYSTEM, IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. PLEASE ADVISE ME ON HOW TO HANDLE THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION. UPDATED 10/26/10. *LJ UPDATED 10/26/10 *TR

2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2006 Dodge Sprinter 2500.
- Manufacturer: Daimler Vans USA, LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER/PANEL
- Summary: Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 Dodge and Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans manufactured June 30, 2003, to August 31, 2006. The instrument cluster on the affected vehicles fails to illuminate the BRAKE warning lamp in the instrument cluster during the vehicle start up bulb-function check. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 105, "Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems."
- Consequence: Without the BRAKE lamp illuminating during the vehicle start up bulb-function check, the driver has no confirmation that the lamp is working and therefore may not know whether or not the lamp will illuminate if the brake fluid level is low. If the operator is unaware that the vehicle has low brake fluid, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
- Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and DVUSA and Dodge dealers will correct the instrument cluster software, as necessary, free of charge. An interim notification was sent to owners on January 6, 2017. A second notice will be mailed to owners once the remedy becomes available. The recall began on July 27, 2017. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-770-705-2070.
