The Mercedes-Benz GLE, formerly Mercedes-Benz M-Class (designated with the "ML" nomenclature), is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz since 1997. In terms of size, it is slotted in between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS, the latter with which it shares platforms.

The first-generation M-Class, designated with the model code W163, is a body-on-frame SUV and was produced until 2004. For a short time, between 1999 and 2002, the W163 M-Class was also built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, for the European market, before all production moved to the U.S. plant near Vance, Alabama. The second-generation M-Class (W164) moved to a unibody platform while sharing most components with the GL-Class, which sports a longer body to accommodate third-row seating.

Since April 2015, the M-Class has been renamed to the GLE with the release of the facelifted W166 model, in an effort to harmonize Mercedes-Benz SUV nameplates by aligning it with the E-Class.

Common 2020 Mercedes-benz Gle problems

Common Problems with the Mercedes-Benz GLE 2020

  • Leather Seat Quality:
A few owners of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 have reported issues with the leather seats, specifically a crack in the groove of the driver's seat. This can affect the appearance of the seat and may be a sign of poor quality leather. It is important to note that this issue may not affect all GLE 2020 models and may vary in severity.
  • Noises and Leaks:
Some owners of the Mercedes-Benz GLE 2020 have reported noises and leaks in their vehicles, such as rattles from the underside, wind noises at speed, and water leaks. These issues can lead to discomfort for drivers and passengers, as well as potential damage to the vehicle's interior.
  • Transmission Software Issues:
Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for certain 2020-2023 GLE and GLS models equipped with a six-cylinder engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission due to a software issue that can cause the engine to stall. This issue can potentially expose drivers to rear-end collisions and can be fixed by installing new software at a nearby dealer.
  • Pedal Breakage:
A recall has also been issued for certain 2024 GLE models due to a welding issue that could cause the accelerator and brake pedals to fracture and break. This issue could affect a driver's ability to accelerate or decelerate and can be fixed by drilling through the troublesome spot welds and installing a bracket with rivets.
  • Water Intrusion:
Mercedes-Benz has recalled GLE and GLS SUVs from the 2020 and 2021 model years due to a potential air conditioning leak that could lead to water collection in the front footwells, causing corrosion and potentially short-circuiting electric components. This issue can be fixed by checking the air conditioning drain hoses and correcting their installation if necessary.

It is important for Mercedes-Benz GLE 2020 owners to be aware of these common problems and to address any concerns with their vehicle promptly to ensure their safety and the longevity of their vehicle. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent or resolve these issues.
