1990 Mazda Rx-7 problems
The Mazda RX-7 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, rotary engine-powered sports car that was manufactured and marketed by Mazda from 1978 until 2002 across three generations, all of which made use of a compact, lightweight Wankel rotary engine.
The first-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the SA (early) and FB (late), is a two-seater 2-door hatchback coupé. It featured a 12A carbureted rotary engine as well as the option for a 13B rotary engine with electronic fuel injection in later years.
The second-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FC, was offered as a 2-seater coupé with a 2+2 option available in some markets, as well as in a convertible body style. This was powered by the 13B rotary engine, offered in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms.
The third-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FD, was offered a 2+2-seater coupé with a limited run of a 2-seater option. Some markets were only available as a 2-seater. It featured a sequentially-turbocharged 13B REW engine.
More than 800,000 RX-7s were manufactured over its lifetime.

Common 1990 Mazda Rx-7 problems
The Mazda RX-7, particularly the 1990 model, is a beloved sports car known for its sleek design and impressive performance. However, like any vehicle, the RX-7 is not without its faults. Real RX-7 owners have reported several common car problems, ranging from minor annoyances to major repairs.
One common issue that Mazda RX-7 owners may face is an oil leak developing at the rear stationary gear seal and O-ring. This seal and O-ring are located in the engine and are responsible for preventing oil from leaking. However, the seal and O-ring can become worn or damaged over time, causing oil to leak out of the engine. The issue is reported to affect model years from 1990-1995. If left untreated, this oil leak can lead to engine damage or even failure. Therefore, RX-7 owners must be vigilant and address any oil leaks as soon as they are detected to avoid more serious issues.
Another common issue reported by Mazda RX-7 owners is intermittent no-start, particularly in the turbo models. According to RepairPal, this problem can be caused by a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM). The part controls various aspects of the engine's operation. When the ECM malfunctions, it can prevent the engine from starting even though it is cranking normally. Other possible causes of intermittent no-start can include fuel, ignition, or starter issues. Diagnosing and fixing this issue can be challenging and may require the assistance of a qualified mechanic. However, addressing this problem promptly is crucial to avoid getting stranded unexpectedly or causing further damage to the engine.
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is an important safety feature in any car, including the Mazda RX-7. However, some RX-7 owners have reported that the ABS light can illuminate intermittently, even when there are no problems with the braking system. According to RepairPal, this issue can be caused by a faulty ABS control module or sensor. The faulty sensor can trigger the warning light to turn on even when there is no problem with the brakes. It is important for Mazda RX-7 owners to address this issue promptly. Malfunctioning ABS can compromise the car's braking performance. This can potentially lead to dangerous situations. A qualified mechanic can diagnose the root cause of the problem and determine the appropriate course of action to resolve the issue and ensure the ABS is functioning correctly.
In conclusion, while the Mazda RX-7 is a beloved sports car known for its sleek design and impressive performance, it has its everyday problems. Real owners have reported issues such as oil leaks at the rear stationary gear seal and O-ring, intermittent no-start in turbo models, and ABS warning lights illuminating intermittently. Therefore, RX-7 owners need to be vigilant and promptly address any issues to avoid more serious problems. Seeking the assistance of a qualified mechanic is crucial in diagnosing and resolving these issues and ensuring the car's continued smooth and safe operation.
Why is RX-7 engine bad?
Rotary engines are known for incomplete combustion, oil consumption, and high emissions, relegating the RX-7 to project car status rather than daily drivers. As Hagerty reports, somewhere around 13,879 third-generation RX-7s were sold in the U.S. between 1993 and 1995.
Are RX 7s reliable?
They aren't more or less reliable than any other engine (okay, they're way more reliable than Subaru engines...). The problems are with heat and lubrication. The early RX8s had a flawed design. 2nd and 3rd Gen RX7s had problems with their OMPs and terrible electrical problems.
Why was the RX-7 banned?
Any Mazda RX-7 produced after 1995 is not allowed or is banned in the United States. This is because of the left-hand driving configuration of the vehicle. This means that if you want to own one, you have a couple of options. One is to find a used RX-7 in the United States that is a 1995 year model or older.
How long do RX-7 motors last?
How long does an RX7 engine last? Proper care and maintenance over 32 years or 400,000klm.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1997-05-05
- VIN: JM1FC3326L0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: ANTI-LOCK BRAKE UNIT LEAKING BRAKE FLUID. STARTED ABOUT 5/5/97. LEAKS WITH CAR PARKED, MAY LEAK WHILE DRIVING. STARTED GRADUALLY, NOW LOSES ABOUT TWO OUNCES PER WEEK. IF BRAKE FLUID LEVEL GETS TOO LOW WHILE DRIVING, IT CAN PREVENT PROPER BRAKE OPERATION AND INCREASE THE RISK OF ACCIDENT. THE ABS UNIT IS LOCATED NEAR THE ENGINE EXHAUST AND JUST AFT OF THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. I SUSPECT THAT BRAKE FLUID MAY DRIP ON THE HEATED EXHAUST SYSTEM; PERHAPS THIS COULD CAUSE A FIRE. IF DRIPPING BRAKE FLUID GOT ON THE TIRE, IT COULD REDUCE TRACTION AND CONTRIBUTE TO AN ACCIDENT. ALL OF THESE POSSIBILITIES COMPRISE SAFETY HAZARDS. IN ADDITION, I HAVE CHECKED MULTIPLE SOURCES FOR USED ABS UNITS AND ALL ORIGINAL UNITS LOCATED ALSO LEAK. THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM. SOME OWNERS HAVE REMOVED AND BYPASSED THE ABS UNIT TO STOP THE LEAK. THIS IS PROBABLY ALSO UNSAFE. I SUGGEST THAT THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD REPLACE ALL SUCH DEFECTIVE ABS UNITS AS A SAFETY MEASURE.

I believe that the rx7 is one of the best cars ever made, especially the models from 1989 to 1991. The 80 inch 1.3L 13B 6-port rotary engine produces an amazing sound and high-end performance. If you enjoy autocross or just love to corner like a maniac, this is the car for you. With a 50/50 weight distribution, it is one of the best handling cars ever made. The interior is comfortable and makes you feel like you're in a jet. The owners of this car are not just owners, but fanatics!

I have a convertible and the targa top is awesome. The rotary motor in the car is the best thing to come to cars. These cars can take anything you put towards them. The factory BBS wheels give it a great touch. I bought it because this car has been my dream car and I saved up to get it.

This car is a real head-turner! The sleek body design and awesome styling are timeless. It's an absolute thrill to drive on country roads with the CD cranked up. The rotary engine sounds cool and is very responsive, making it feel like it's on rails. The Pioneer stereo system is top-notch, with AM/FM, tape, and CD options, as well as headrest speakers and four more speakers that provide great sound quality. The leather interior is a nice touch, and the power top with T-top option is great. The paint looks as good as new, and it even has a California hitch for pulling a small boat or trailer. I'm really excited to try out the RX8 coming out this year!
-
This is my third Rx7 and I absolutely love these fun little cars! While they may not have the fastest speed, they are a blast to drive around corners. I was lucky enough to find one with only 44k miles, so I plan on keeping this one for a long time.
-
This car is extremely fast and fun to drive, although it may have some minor reliability issues. The turbo boosts well at 6.5 psi, but it's important to avoid driving in rain or snow due to minimal traction. Additionally, it's worth noting that traction can be an issue on old roads, especially if you have a heavy foot. Overall, this car is a blast to drive!

I love this car! It's a great option for an affordable sports car that can respond very well to modification. The design looks surprisingly up to date, not losing much to newer cars on the road today in the looks category. While it may require some attention, especially as it gets older, even one in good condition can be had cheap. If you're lucky enough to find a turbo model, take care of her!

The car had a solid and nimble road feel, and the luxurious cockpit made for a refined ride that was perfect for twisty mountain roads. However, after 6 months, the clutch completely died on me, which was a bit disappointing. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in for a Nissan sedan because I needed more seats and was concerned about maintenance risks. It was a tough decision, but I'm happy with my new car. Sigh.
