Mazda Rx-7 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda RX-7 is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, rotary engine-powered sports car that was manufactured and marketed by Mazda from 1978 until 2002 across three generations, all of which made use of a compact, lightweight Wankel rotary engine.

The first-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the SA (early) and FB (late), is a two-seater 2-door hatchback coupé. It featured a 12A carbureted rotary engine as well as the option for a 13B rotary engine with electronic fuel injection in later years.

The second-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FC, was offered as a 2-seater coupé with a 2+2 option available in some markets, as well as in a convertible body style. This was powered by the 13B rotary engine, offered in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms.

The third-generation RX-7, sometimes referred to as the FD, was offered a 2+2-seater coupé with a limited run of a 2-seater option. Some markets were only available as a 2-seater. It featured a sequentially-turbocharged 13B REW engine.

More than 800,000 RX-7s were manufactured over its lifetime.

Common Mazda Rx-7 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Mazda RX-7, several common problems have been reported:

  • Intermittent No-Start in Turbo Models:
Another common problem is intermittent no-start, especially in turbo models, which can be caused by a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM). This issue can prevent the engine from starting normally and may require the expertise of a qualified mechanic to diagnose and fix. Addressing this problem promptly is essential to avoid unexpected breakdowns or further engine damage.
  • ABS Warning Lights Illuminating Intermittently:
Some RX-7 owners have reported issues with the ABS warning light illuminating intermittently, even when there are no actual problems with the braking system. This can be caused by a faulty ABS control module or sensor. Promptly addressing this issue is crucial as malfunctioning ABS can compromise the car's braking performance, potentially leading to dangerous situations.
  • Clutch Failure:
Clutch failure has been identified as a common problem, manifesting as the car surging forward or juddering upon releasing the clutch pedal. Owners experiencing these symptoms may need to replace the clutch to resolve the issue.
  • Idling Problems:
Poor idling, characterized by erratic idling instead of constant revs, can be caused by a faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Cleaning and readjusting the TPS can help resolve this issue.
  • Suspension Problems:
Knocking noises from the suspension, particularly noticeable over speed bumps or rough surfaces, are often attributed to rear suspension bushes failing. Replacing the rear suspension bushes is necessary to address this problem.
  • Door Trim Problems:
The trim around the inside of the door, including door handles and storage pockets, is prone to breaking due to poor quality. Owners with broken door handles or damaged trim may need to replace these parts to resolve the issue.

By addressing these common problems promptly and with the help of qualified mechanics, Mazda RX-7 owners can ensure the smooth operation and longevity of their vehicles.

Mazda Rx-7

Are Mazda RX-7 reliable cars?

They aren't more or less reliable than any other engine (okay, they're way more reliable than Subaru engines...). The problems are with heat and lubrication. The early RX8s had a flawed design. 2nd and 3rd Gen RX7s had problems with their OMPs and terrible electrical problems.

Why is the Mazda RX-7 banned in the US?

Any Mazda RX-7 produced after 1995 is not allowed or is banned in the United States. This is because of the left-hand driving configuration of the vehicle. This means that if you want to own one, you have a couple of options. One is to find a used RX-7 in the United States that is a 1995 year model or older.

How many miles does a Mazda RX-7 last?

A Mazda vehicle can last a long time. Mazda vehicles are known for lasting over a decade and between 200,000 and 250,000 miles, with some going even longer than that. The key to a long-lasting Mazda vehicle is to keep it running with proper maintenance and regular service.

Why did Mazda discontinue the RX-7?

Unfortunately, the RX-7 was discontinued in most of Europe by 1996 due to emissions regulations, although Mazda continued to produce cars for some markets, eventually boosting power output on later Japan-only models to as high as 280PS. The year 2002 marked the end of one of the most exceptional sports cars in history.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-13
  • Date Complaint: 2022-09-13
  • VIN: JM1FC3311M0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: My seatbelt motor and rail has a recall that the dealer confirmed it when I took it to them. My seatbelts get stuck sometimes causing safety concerns. The recall sent in 1996 from Mazda states the cable can wear sufficiently that the cable which retracts the buckle assembly will jam in the rail making it inoperative, if a collision the occupants will not be properly restrained.Recall states the dealer will extend warranty and replace shoulder belt rail and motor for the life of the vehicle. I took my car around October of 2021 they had the car and confirmed recall said they will call me when they get the parts, it’s September of 2022 and I haven’t gotten a call from them, when I call they tell me they don’t have them yet or say they know nothing regarding this car. Can someone help me to get this recall taken care of since I still own the car and have safety concerns with the seatbelts. Sometimes they get struck and don’t want to release properly.

Latest negative Mazda Rx-7 car reviews

  1. Ned Jerde 2024-10-13

    Vehicle year: 1993

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I've loved this car from the day that I bought it....

  2. Mohamed Pacocha 2024-08-03

    Vehicle year: 1993

I had some issues with flooding and poor fuel economy, but overall my experience with the car was positive. I would consider buying it again in the future, but only when I have the financial means to address any potential problems. Unfortunately, I did have to spend $1,200 NZ just to have it looked at by a mechanic. I ended up selling it to a car dealer. I would caution against purchasing a red Batmobile with black 17 inch Enkeii rims, as this particular car may have had a transmission change. However, I do not regret my time with the car.

  3. Gardner Davis 2024-07-10

    Vehicle year: 1995

I used to get poor fuel economy, which could be compared to the Viper despite having less than half the horsepower. I had the engine rebuilt, but unfortunately, it did not improve much. The problem is that Mazda is trying to use a sweep seal (seal at the bottom of your entrance storm door) to follow a rather complicated architecture. Anyway, when the mechanic changed the coolant, he did not fill the radiator properly, causing the engine to overheat and the seals to fail. After this, I decided to stop putting effort into the car and bought a Chevy Camaro, which I am very pleased with.

  4. Odell Kuhic 2024-05-28

    Vehicle year: 1990

I love this car! It's a great option for an affordable sports car that can respond very well to modification. The design looks surprisingly up to date, not losing much to newer cars on the road today in the looks category. While it may require some attention, especially as it gets older, even one in good condition can be had cheap. If you're lucky enough to find a turbo model, take care of her!

  5. Forrest Schoen 2024-04-11

    Vehicle year: 1990

The car had a solid and nimble road feel, and the luxurious cockpit made for a refined ride that was perfect for twisty mountain roads. However, after 6 months, the clutch completely died on me, which was a bit disappointing. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in for a Nissan sedan because I needed more seats and was concerned about maintenance risks. It was a tough decision, but I'm happy with my new car. Sigh.

  1. Jordyn Runolfsdottir 2025-01-09

    Vehicle year: 1991

I've owned two of these cars and I've loved them both. Although there was one serious repair concern involving the engine losing compression, it's not a problem that will kill the car, but it can be a bit annoying the first time it happens. This car is an absolute joy to drive, it hugs the curves and loves the road. It's also great for long trips. Sure, it doesn't have cup holders, but who needs them? You need to keep both hands on the wheel to feel the excitement anyway. The oil-cooled engine is perfect for Southern climates (like mine) and as long as you regularly change the oil every 2500 - 3000 miles, you have nothing to worry about.

  2. Arlo Kuhic 2025-01-08

    Vehicle year: 1990

I believe that the rx7 is one of the best cars ever made, especially the models from 1989 to 1991. The 80 inch 1.3L 13B 6-port rotary engine produces an amazing sound and high-end performance. If you enjoy autocross or just love to corner like a maniac, this is the car for you. With a 50/50 weight distribution, it is one of the best handling cars ever made. The interior is comfortable and makes you feel like you're in a jet. The owners of this car are not just owners, but fanatics!

  3. Camden Abernathy 2025-01-06

    Vehicle year: 1994

This is a no-compromise sports car that may not be the most practical for everyday use. It has a rough and noisy ride, and the interior can feel cramped. It's not the best option for long trips, and it can be scary to drive on wet pavement. The engine is extremely complex, so it's important to find a qualified mechanic to work on it. However, if you take care of it properly, it can provide Japanese Ferrari-level performance. Maintenance costs can be high, at around $35,000 over 16 years, and expect to pay around $100/hr for maintenance. Despite all of this, I absolutely love this car and would never sell it.

  4. Liam Medhurst 2025-01-03

    Vehicle year: 1994

A poor mans Z06. Great car. But, if you're not mechanically inclined, don't worry! Learning about its quirks and working on it can be half the fun of owning it.

  5. Casimir Boyer 2025-01-02

    Vehicle year: 1995

It's a great car that I highly recommend you buy. It's the best car I've ever driven.
