Mazda Protege problems

The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.
It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".
The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).
Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

Vehicle year: 2002
I have owned this car since I just got out of college and it has been a great investment. Despite revving the engine to redline on a regular basis (I have a stick) and maxing out at a top speed of over 140 mph (on the way to Vegas - note the throttle just shuts out till your speed drops down), this car has held up incredibly well. I have only needed to do quasi-regular oil changes, one set of brakes, one set of tires, and a fluid/transmission flush, oh and a battery replacement. I have never even replaced the batteries in my remote keyless and the spare set still looks brand new! I am so happy with this car that I have decided to keep it and get a CX7!

I believe that the Protege is the best car in its class for the year 2000. I personally own the ES 1.8L Protege (LX in Canada) with all the options, including the touring package (Potenza tires, moonroof, spoiler, etc.). I have driven it for 60,000km and it has been a great experience owning this car. As an aggressive/fast driver, I push the car to its limits and it never disappoints me. I find it hard to believe that some people actually complain about this car. In my experience, Protege owners really like this car and are proud to own it.

Vehicle year: 1996
This car is absolutely fantastic! I received it as a gift for my 18th birthday and I am absolutely in love with it. While the engine may be a little underpowered, the manual transmission makes up for it. In fact, this car is so easy to drive that I actually learned how to drive stick shift with it! Although the DX trim lacks some basic comforts like power features and cruise control, the car is incredibly easy to work on. Plus, the 1.5 liter engine provides incredible gas mileage - I was able to go 80 miles on a little less than a 1/4 tank! Overall, this car is perfect for a starter car or for a student, and with proper maintenance, it can last forever.

Your protege has been incredibly reliable! It's great to hear that you've been keeping up with the maintenance schedule, changing the oil every 3000 miles and other fluids as scheduled. It's amazing how after many miles, you can still hear just a small purr from the engine. It's fantastic that you haven't had any transmission problems or issues that have left you stranded. With this kind of care, I'm sure your Mazda will last well over 200k miles! When the time comes, you'll definitely be buying another Mazda.

Vehicle year: 1997
Best reliable car you've ever bought! After 17 years, your car still runs strong, even with an average of 120 miles driven daily. Everything works perfectly, and you're getting an impressive 33mpg. The only major repairs you've had to do were a timing belt and radiator change, as well as front axles. For minor repairs, you only needed to clean the upstream O2 sensor and EGR valve. The best part is that this car is easy to repair, and you've been able to do most of it yourself. The total cost of repairs and tires has only been $4,300. You've kept your car well-lubricated with Walmart brand synthetic oil all these years, and it's paid off! Well done!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I've been driving it for almost three winters now, and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any issues with it, aside from regular oil changes and brake maintenance. It's been a reliable little car that I can always count on. Although it may not be the most exciting car out there, I think it's a great choice for anyone looking for a dependable ride. The engine still has some 'zoomzoom' even after 170K miles, which is really impressive. The only thing I would change is the color - mine is silver with a grey interior, which is a bit boring. Overall, I'm very satisfied with this car and would definitely recommend it to others.

Although it may not be the v8 truck I was initially hoping for, this car has proven to be a great choice for me. Despite my height and weight, I find it comfortable to drive every day and it handles exceptionally well. Surprisingly, it even races well. While the exterior may not be the most attractive and the AC went out last winter (which unfortunately means no heat either), I have been able to maintain it myself and it has even helped me move houses and fit 7 people at once. Additionally, its lightweight and RWD make it easy to drift around corners, which can be both fun and dangerous. Not to mention, the trunk can fit an airtight box with two 12' subwoofers. Overall, I am confident in saying that this is a great car and I plan on keeping it!

Vehicle year: 2003
I purchased this car in 2008 with 53000 miles on it. Since then, I have taken great care of it by replacing all four brakes, 4 stabilizer bars, 5 struts, belts twice, timing belt, spark plugs and wires, and 4 tires at $280 each. I also rust proof and change the oil with synthetic every 3000 miles. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the car such as getting only 14 MPG, the A/C barely working, and the fan making loud noises. Additionally, the car is not very reliable and can be tiring to drive due to hitting potholes and merging onto highways with the automatic. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my car and the memories it has given me.

Your 11 year old Protege is still young by Mazda standards, with only 149,000 miles on it. It's great to hear that the engine runs smoothly and the car starts in all weather. With a manual transmission, it handles great in snow and ice. Although it may be a bit unstable driving through deep mud and water, you still get an impressive 37 MPG on the highway. It's understandable that the car may not be the most comfortable on the highway, as it's quite small and you feel every bump in the road and wind gust. Living in Minnesota, it's not surprising that the body has some rust on it. Unfortunately, the suspension is giving out, likely due to rust. Overall, it's clear that you have a lot of love for your little car, and it's great to hear about your positive experiences with it.
