Mazda Protege problems
The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.
It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".
The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).
Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

In late 2012, I made the wise decision to purchase my 2000 Protege with the proper 5-speed manual. Since then, I have experienced no mechanical problems whatsoever. The 1.6ZM Engine runs like clockwork and provides a zippy ride. Despite the car's somewhat comfortable ride, I believe it has the potential for even more power. Additionally, I have noticed some rust around the rear wheel arches. However, this is a common issue with Proteges due to Mazda's assembly process. Despite these minor setbacks, the Protege is one of the most reliable and tough vehicles out there.

I can't express how much I love this car. It's been such a reliable companion, with the original clutch and water pump still going strong. All I do is change the oil every 3,750 miles and perform the major service every 30K miles. It's truly an amazing car.

I haven't had too many problems with my car, except for the exhaust pipe breaking a lot. I've had to replace it at least once a year from 1998 to the present. However, the transmission and engine work well and I haven't had any issues with them. I received the car as a freshman in high school and now, as a freshman in college, it's still running well. Although, the body dents very easily. I'm not sure about the person above getting 40 mpg, but mine only gets around 25 on the highway and 20 in town. Additionally, when it's windy out, the car can be difficult to control and it's loud when driving in the wind. The windows aren't sealed very well.

Unfortunately, my 2002 Mazda Protegé ES was totaled due to the impact, but the good news is that all four of us walked away without any injuries. We're grateful to be okay!

I really enjoy owning and driving this vehicle. I have experienced excellent mpg, especially on the highway. My maintenance costs have been relatively low, with only scheduled maintenance for the timing belt interval, two brake jobs, and two sets of tires. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a similar type of vehicle. Although there are a few minor annoyances, such as the 'hey your seatbelt is not buckled' alarm when you are in an idle state, and the stiff ride, overall it's a great car.

This vehicle is great on dry roads. However, I noticed that it tends to hydro-plane on wet roads. It's perfect for driving around town, but it may not be the best option for out of town trips.

I've owned this car for only 9 months and unfortunately, I've had to replace the oxygen sensors, exhaust manifold, and catalytic converter, which were all quite expensive. Additionally, I've experienced an issue with the accelerator pulling from my foot and sucking down to the floor twice, which was quite scary on the freeway. The mechanics suspect it may be related to the cruise control, but they're still investigating. Lastly, there's been a persistent squeaking sound from the front right that no one has been able to identify or fix. Overall, it's been a bit of a hassle, but I'm hopeful that we can get everything sorted out soon.

Hi there! I bought this car 10 years ago when it was 2 years old and had 30K miles on it. While it has served me well, I have had some issues with it over the years. I've had to replace the exhaust system six times, and the cloth seats have ripped apart from the leather backing. Additionally, the brake cylinders fail inspection every year, and changing the oil can be a bit of a hassle. I've also had to replace the cv joints three times. Lastly, I've noticed that the headlights are quite dim, even when newly replaced. Despite these challenges, I'm grateful for the time I've had with this car, but I'm now looking forward to finding a new one that better suits my needs. Thanks for listening!

We've only had to put a few dollars into it for things like brakes and the emission system, but it still runs great and gets an impressive 31 MPG around town.
