The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.

It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".

The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).

Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

Are Mazda Proteges reliable?

Many users say that their Mazda Protégés are fairly reliable, though they do need to take them in for maintenance more regularly than once per year in many cases. However, this isn't terribly surprising given the fact that the last Mazda Protégé was created in 2003.

How long can a Mazda Protege last?

One of the key features of the Mazda Protege is its robust and durable engine. Many owners report that these cars can run smoothly for hundreds of thousands of miles with regular maintenance and care.

What was the problem with the 2001 Mazda Protege?

Most Common 2001 Mazda Protege Problems

An electrically shorted air flow sensor can cause a crank-no start condition. diagnosis may show that ignition spark... The timing belt tensioner pulley may make a squealing noise from the timing cover area on cold startup.

What year did they stop making the Mazda Protege?

Interior room is spacious for a small sedan and includes a fairly comfortable rear seat. A four-door hatchback/wagon, called the Protegé5, joined the line. Large fog lights, wide tires, and exaggerated bodywork lend it a sportier appearance. It was discontinued after the 2003 model year, replaced by the Mazda 3.

Latest negative Mazda Protege car reviews

  1. Darron Nolan 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 1998

Your 11 year old Protege is still young by Mazda standards, with only 149,000 miles on it. It's great to hear that the engine runs smoothly and the car starts in all weather. With a manual transmission, it handles great in snow and ice. Although it may be a bit unstable driving through deep mud and water, you still get an impressive 37 MPG on the highway. It's understandable that the car may not be the most comfortable on the highway, as it's quite small and you feel every bump in the road and wind gust. Living in Minnesota, it's not surprising that the body has some rust on it. Unfortunately, the suspension is giving out, likely due to rust. Overall, it's clear that you have a lot of love for your little car, and it's great to hear about your positive experiences with it.

  2. Ari Little 2025-03-15

    Vehicle year: 2003

I bought this car with only 15 miles on it and have put a lot of miles on it since then. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the front bearing four times on each side, as well as the alternator twice. I also had to change the oil tank and front exhaust at the intake manifold, and replace both the oxygen sensor and speed sensor. Additionally, I've had to replace the radiator twice. Despite following the scheduled maintenance and changing the oil every 3-4k miles, my car has been a bit of a nightmare. It's disappointing to see it rusting so quickly. I'm surprised it received such a high reliability rating on Edmunds. What could have gone wrong?

  3. Haleigh Cassin 2025-03-11

    Vehicle year: 1996

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience with this car. I want to start by saying that most of the comments here are pretty good, and I think I just got unlucky with 'the bad one'. My mother purchased this car for me as a graduation present in 2004, and we bought it at an auction for about $2000 with a little over 100k miles. The engine was replaced in 2006, and it seemed to be fine. However, as time went on, I started experiencing unresolved electrical problems, computer problems, and alternator problems. I later found out that the 'new engine' was damaged, and the odometer was set back. Currently, it's at 160k (really about 190k), and it still runs, but it's on its last leg. We've spent thousands of dollars in repairs. Overall, it's a good car, but I would recommend doing research before you buy.

  4. Jaylin Ondricka 2025-03-09

    Vehicle year: 1998

This is a great car, although the hood rusted all the way across the edge nearest the windshield. The mileage averages around 30MPG, which is not as fuel efficient as the 94 Civic w/auto that averaged 37MPG.

  5. Leonel Casper 2025-03-07

    Vehicle year: 2000

This car has a few issues that need to be addressed. The keyless entry works only some of the time, the CD player's volume goes up when turned down, and the CD plays only intermittently. The cup holder is not very good, and the AC is quite loud despite not blowing much air. Unfortunately, dealerships have been unhelpful in fixing these issues under warranty, often requiring repeated trips to identify the problem. They also do not offer loaner cars for multiple day factory fixes. Additionally, the plastic clips that hold panels on break randomly and fall off. As someone who takes great care of their car, this has been frustrating. In hindsight, I should have considered a used Toyota Avalon or a new Honda Civic.

Latest positive Mazda Protege car reviews

  1. Alphonso Douglas 2025-03-26

    Vehicle year: 1999

You bought this car brand new in 2000 and have only had to replace the brakes, alternator, battery and rocker arm. With only 90,000 miles on it, it's been a reliable ride that just keeps on running. You've consistently gotten great gas mileage at 27-28 mpg. While it can be a little loud on the freeway, it's not too bad for an inexpensive small car. The only downside has been the radio.

  2. Enrique Koepp 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 1995

After a first month of shaking off the dust and investing over $700 in new parts, my little car perked right up! Although there were occasional lapses in electrical connections, like the windshield wipers, it seems to drive better and better with time. It even beats the big boys that keep broadsiding it. It's truly the 'little engine that could.' When I purchased it several months ago, it already had 126,186 miles on it, but I have the feeling it's just getting started. In fact, six mechanics' eyes lit up once they got behind the wheel themselves. I absolutely love my little car; it makes me love driving, even in crazy traffic. Its small size is a plus for maneuvering, too. Forget 'first car'--this is a keeper!

  3. Leone Osinski 2025-03-18

    Vehicle year: 1990

Hey there! My girlfriend just bought this car for $1100, and I was a bit skeptical about its performance at first. But, to my surprise, it runs really strong and accelerates quickly, even with almost 200,000 miles on it! (By the way, I used to have a 2000 Celica GT-S, and I didn't feel much of a difference up to 30 mph.) Sure, the exterior is a bit dated, but what more can you expect from such a bargain other than great reliability and performance?

  4. Alfonso Koelpin 2025-03-17

    Vehicle year: 1996

I purchased my 96 Protege back in 2003 with 89,000 miles on the clock. It was a reliable car that served me well for three years until I had to junk it in 2006 with almost 200,000 miles on it. I never had to take it to the repair shop except for oil changes, and it never stalled or failed to start. When I had to part ways with it, I was almost in tears. The engine was in perfect condition, never ate oil or even sputtered, and I didn't have to spend a penny on it. The only reason I had to let it go is that I drove it so hard that the doors were literally falling off (held together by string). I can't emphasize enough how much I adored this car. I drove it through thick and thin, even though it was underpowered, and it never let me down.

If you're looking for a car with a lot of zoom, zoom, the 2002 Mazda Protege' is a great choice. It has excellent performance, is sharp on turns, and is fast and sporty. The interior is roomy with plenty of leg room. However, the seats are a bit hard and not very comfortable, and the suspension is a bit tight, which can make for a slightly uncomfortable ride. If you don't mind a rough ride, this sports car is a good choice in the mid-priced compact sedan category.
