The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.

It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".

The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).

Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

Latest negative Mazda Protege car reviews

  1. Alexandre Towne 2025-06-02

    Vehicle year: 1999

I bought this car brand new and it ran great until shortly after the warranty expired. Unfortunately, I experienced a series of issues with the O2 sensor, catalytic converter, and transmission sensor. I took it to Schwartz Mazda in NJ, but they misdiagnosed the problem and repaired it with a rebuilt transmission. Even after three more visits, the same symptoms persisted, such as the speedometer dropping out, the O/D off light flashing, and the car revving out of control. Eventually, they replaced the speed sensor on the transmission, but only after I had already spent $2000 on a new transmission. It's important to be aware that once your 50k warranty runs out, you may be responsible for any repairs needed.

  2. Floyd Hayes 2025-05-23

    Vehicle year: 2003

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your Mazda Protege. It must have been frustrating to deal with a gas tank leak, which is a serious safety issue. It is disappointing that Mazda did not address your concerns, and I understand why you would be hesitant to purchase another Mazda in the future. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  3. Muhammad Medhurst 2025-05-16

    Vehicle year: 2001

I had a tough experience with my Mazda from the early 2000's. Unfortunately, I made a mistake buying it with about 130,000 miles on it. Although I got a check engine light as soon as I left the lot, I understand that it was my decision to buy from a used dealer. I had some issues with the car for months, including it refusing to start at random intervals, which was quite frustrating. I spent around $800 trying to fix the issue, but it took a couple of months for the mechanic to finally figure it out. Throughout the year, I had to fix fans, replace the catalytic converter, and deal with various other things. Unfortunately, last month the car started overheating on the highway and the timing belt blew. It looks like the car needs a new engine, so I've decided to move on. I would advise against getting a Mazda from the early 2000's, as it may not be the most reliable option. I'm 90% sure that you will regret your decision.

  4. Ambrose Kassulke 2025-05-09

    Vehicle year: 1997

It's a good all-around car, but it may not be the best choice for enthusiasts, especially with the 1.5-liter engine. It does have a fair amount of body roll for a car of its size, and I've seen SUVs with less lean. However, it is highly reliable and well-appointed. If you do decide to get this car, I would recommend opting for a 5-speed transmission to make it more entertaining to drive, especially if you end up with a 2nd generation Protege with a very slow 92 horsepower engine.

  5. Immanuel Cormier 2025-05-01

    Vehicle year: 1998

This car had several issues from the beginning of ownership, including a vibrating front end, rough idling, frequent brake pad replacements, a sticking transmission, and low engine cylinder pressure. Despite multiple attempts to fix these issues, they persisted. It is clear that this particular car was not up to the standards expected of it.

Latest positive Mazda Protege car reviews

  1. Jamarcus Purdy 2025-06-10

    Vehicle year: 2003

Hi there! I noticed that you've owned a few different cars over the years, including a 1989 Mazda 323 hatchback and a 1994 Protege sedan. Recently, you made the switch to a Mazda Protege ES sedan with only 64,000 miles on it, and it sounds like you're really enjoying it! I can definitely understand missing the feel of a 5-speed, and it's great to hear that you're getting better gas mileage now. I hope your upcoming road trip goes well and you get to enjoy some pure highway driving!

  2. Ryder Friesen 2025-06-10

    Vehicle year: 1991

The design of this car may not be noteworthy, but the performance and amenities are certainly admirable. It's impressive that a 13-year-old car has such luxurious features and kick-butt performance. And let's not forget the incredible 5-speed manual!

  3. Donnell Abbott 2025-06-07

    Vehicle year: 1996

This car was purchased new. Current daily commute of 50 miles RT and mileage of 118K. Although it was never garaged and rust of the exhaust system was a problem due to living in the Northeast, I have taken good care of it. I have replaced the exhaust pipes and muffler over the last two years. It may be underpowered, but it is very economical, still averaging 35+ MPG. Overall, I must say that this has been an unbelievably good car.

  4. Braden Gerlach 2025-06-07

    Vehicle year: 2003

This is a great little car. I tried all of the other cars in its class, and I found this one to be in a league of its own. I can't believe that some people buy a Cavalier over this little gem. You're getting half the car!

  5. Lowell Wintheiser 2025-06-06

    Vehicle year: 1992

This is my starter car, and it has been so reliable, fun to drive, and easy to park in the city that I've never sold it. I just put gas in it, change the oil, and that's about it. It's a very low maintenance car. In the 13 years that I've had it, I've only had to replace the muffler, radiator, and brakes, but I'm still on the first clutch. It's an amazing little car, and I'll hate to have to say goodbye when the time comes. My mechanic says it looks good for at least another 60K.
