Mazda Protege problems
The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.
It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".
The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).
Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

I bought this superb car in 1998. It was already 4 years old with just around 48,000 miles. This is actually the second Protege LX I have owned, the first one being a '93 with a 5 speed, while this car is a 4sp. automatic. I must say, this car is perfect in reliability and very mechanically sound. Only normal repairs and scheduled services have been done, and so far nothing major. The best part is that this car has 215,500 miles on it and it still uses no oil and leaks no fluids of any kind. The transmission has been flawless all those miles. If you're looking for a reliable vehicle and you're lucky enough to find one in decent shape, I highly recommend buying it! This is a 1994 MAZDA PROTEGE LX 1.8 DOHC.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car - I bought it new and have been loving the great gas mileage! Of course, with any front wheel drive car, I've had to replace the CV Joints a couple of times, but that's to be expected. I even replaced the timing belt at 65000 miles, not because it was broken, but just to be safe. Now, my car has 110000 miles and I just replaced the spark plugs. I found that adding some Mystery Oil (6oz) really helped improve my gas mileage - I'm back up to 40 mpg, even with all those miles on the car! It's worth noting that I live in Florida, where the steepest hill is only about 5ft high. Thanks for listening!

This is my first car. Congratulations on your new purchase! I bought it a week ago and it is wonderful. It drives well, handles smoothly, and is mostly comfortable. It's great to hear that it's also fuel-efficient and has good air conditioning.

I bought my 01 protege 3 years ago for $500.00 with 150k. I remember my friend thought it was on its last leg, haha! But surprisingly, it still runs like a sewing machine with 235k miles on it and gets a persistent 34 to 37 mpg. I've only had to do some basic maintenance like replacing the starter, battery, brakes, tires, and alternator.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 95 Mazda DX. I've been driving it every day since I bought it with 118,000 miles on it. I've taken good care of it by having the timing belt, water pump, and belts changed, as well as having a new clutch installed. Now, with 184,000 miles on it, it still drives great and gets amazing mileage of about 34-36 mpg. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it's perfect for me. I do have to admit that the cup holders and stereo are a bit too close together, and it can be a bit loud inside at times. I've also had to replace the rear defrost button a few times, but it's an easy fix. Overall, I'm really happy with my 5-speed Mazda, although I do wish it had a 6-speed. Thanks for listening!

In the past 2 years, I've had to replace a lot of parts on my car including 2 wheel bearings, the front axle, the alternator, and even the seat belt. Unfortunately, I also had to get a valve job which ended up causing issues with the piston rings. This is something to be aware of if you own this type of car. It's not an easy fix and may require a new engine. It's important to note that the newest versions of these cars are now 13 years old, so it may not be the best investment to buy one.

I own both a 97 and 98 Protégé. Both have been very dependable. If you are looking for something that is inexpensive, reliable and provides good gas mileage, I would definitely recommend this car. Both of my cars are LXs, which are somewhat sporty looking, but it's important to note that this is not the car to buy if you are looking for performance.

I've had this car since last December and it's been giving me trouble every day. I've already had to replace my fuel injector, spark plugs, and other things. Right now, it's lagging and takes forever to build up speed. I wish I never got this car.

Back in 01, we bought a brand new 2.0 ES GT with a 5 spd. It was the best value in its class for Japanese makes. Although the engine has always sounded rattley at start up, it hasn't caused any real problems yet. At about 60,000 kms, we needed to replace the EGR valve, and now at 75,000 kms, the alternator has failed. However, what bothers me the most are the corrosion problems I have had with this car. I live in Toronto, where they use road salt heavily, but it is still no excuse for the amount of rust this thing has on it for its age. Every piece of metal attached to this car is rusty, including body panels and any mechanical part. Even the horn has failed due to corrosion. Despite these issues, I still believe Mazda is a great brand.
