Maserati Ghibli problems

Maserati Ghibli is the name of three different cars produced by Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati: the AM115, a V8 grand tourer from 1967 to 1973; the AM336, a V6 twin-turbocharged coupé from 1992 to 1998; and the M157, an executive saloon from 2013 onwards.
Ghibli is the Libyan Arabic name for the hot dry south-westerly wind of the Libyan desert.
Ghibli (AM115)
The original Ghibli (Tipo AM115) is a two-door, 2+2 V8-engined grand tourer. American magazine Sports Car International named it number nine on its list of Top Sports Cars of the 1960s.

Common Maserati Ghibli problems
The Maserati Ghibli, a luxury sports sedan, is known for its sleek Italian styling and powerful engine. However, it has several common problems that affect its performance and reliability.
- Fuel Consumption Falls Short: The Maserati Ghibli was initially marketed as a fuel-efficient car, but many owners have reported that it doesn't seem as fuel-efficient as it used to be. Upgrading the car with aftermarket exhaust systems, performance chips, larger diameter header pipes, and larger air filters can help improve its fuel efficiency.
- Clutch Issues: The Maserati Ghibli has a standard six-speed transmission, which is prone to clutch problems. One common issue is the clutch's inability to return to its normal position, indicating that the clutch disc has been damaged. If this occurs, the clutch disc inside the clutch should be replaced. If the car starts to pop out of gear while driving, it's a good indicator that the clutch needs to be replaced. Another indicator of a bad clutch is if it slips or engages roughly. Installing a new clutch disc can help fix this issue, but if the problem persists, the entire clutch may need to be replaced.
- Power Issues: If the car has a problem with its power, it may not shift smoothly, indicating that the transmission is worn out and needs to be replaced. The Ghibli also has an issue where the car will no longer shift when at high RPM, which is usually a result of the car's clutches. Replacing the clutch with a high-quality replacement can help fix this issue.
- Various Brake Problems: Several issues can arise when the brakes on a Maserati Ghibli are used. One common problem is that the brakes lock up when the car is being used, indicating that a disc or pad needs to be replaced. Another issue is when the car's brakes are used, and the pedal sinks lower than usual, indicating that the brake housing is damaged. This can be caused by using the wrong type of brake fluid when replacing the brake fluid, so it needs to be changed. In summary, the Maserati Ghibli has several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. These issues can be fixed with proper maintenance, upgrades, and replacement of damaged parts.
Is Maserati Ghibli high maintenance?
Overall, Maserati upkeep is a significant expense that you shouldn't underestimate, but it may be worth it for some people. Maseratis cost about $1,600 per year just in preventive maintenance. For reference, the average vehicle costs about $650 per year in maintenance and repairs.
Is Ghibli a good car?
Overall, that mixed message very much sums up the Maserati Ghibli. Yes, some things about it are good: it's decent to drive (on roads that suit it), as well as being wonderful to look at. But, fundamentally, it's a much less polished product than alternative executive cars, so you'll have to really want one.
Does Maserati have reliability issues?
From brake issues to clutch and transmission problems, faulty electrical systems, and poor build quality, Maserati vehicles have a reputation for being unreliable. It is essential to factor in the potential costs of repairs and maintenance when making your decision.
Do Maserati Ghibli hold their value?
Over a 60 month period, a Maserati Ghibli is expected to lose around 69% of its value. That's on par with other luxury brands on the list, including Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Maserati Ghibli 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-23
- Date Complaint: 2022-07-23
- VIN: ZAM57RTS4H1
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The vehicle was manufactured with laminated glass for all windows and the glass is delaminating and forming bubbles around glass edges which compromises the integrity of the glass. On my vehicle, it affects all 4 windows and both front and rear windshields. This issue is widely reported on forums and group message boards and seems to affect all years of the Maserati Ghibli from 2014+. I have inquired with a local independent shop and was told that this is a safety concern and to try to reach out to the dealership. Reaching out to the dealership, I have not received a response. Others have said they had mixed results with the dealerships replacing their glass even with warranty. Others out of warranty were denied replacement or were told it is normal and not to worry.
Maserati Ghibli 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-11
- Date Complaint: 2022-06-16
- VIN: ZAM57RTA4E1
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: During a diagnostic performed at the Maserati dealership to repair parking brake failure, it was determined that the right strut tower/dome has a large crack. The vehicle has not been in any major accidents or driven over any potholes and it appears that this happened spontaneously. There were no warning lights to signal this issue. During the diagnostic it was also found that all 4 tires were bald, control arms needed to be replaced and the car was out of alignment. I have only driven the car approximately 7,000 miles since purchasing it used and the car was delivered with new tires and a flawless 150 point inspection from the dealer. This deformity has major safety concerns as it affects the suspension, alignment, tires and creates unsafe driving conditions. I asked the Maserati dealership and Maserati USA if this vehicle was involved in Service Campaign 268 for possible deformation of the dome, but was told it was not involved.

Upon research, the contact related the failure to an engine software malfunction. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed however, the mechanic found no failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to record the failure whenever it happened again and forward the evidence of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,975.

I have been a proud owner of a Mercedes for over a decade now. Having test-driven a few of the new models and spoken to the mechanics at the Mercedes dealer, I can confidently say that once you own a Mercedes, it's hard to switch to a different sedan, much like Corvette owners. However, after inspecting the Maserati Ghibili with an eye for detail, speaking to mechanics, and test-driving it, I have decided to make the switch to the Maserati S Q4. Here's why: the power is flat-out amazing, the exterior and interior are unique and stunning, and the leather and comfort in the front two seats are fantastic. My kids are happy in the back seats, and the gauges are very easy to read. The handling is better than most in its class, although the ride is a bit stiffer compared to many Mercedes models, but not by much. The trunk has quite a bit more room than you would think. Although the stereo needs work, I will get that straightened out somehow. The gas mileage is not great, but with gas prices so low, I am fine with that for now. I wish I could speak towards the reliability of the Q4, but I cannot at this time. One of the main reasons I considered switching was that every day while driving, I see so many Mercedes-Benz vehicles on the road that they have become a bit boring to look at. Anyhow, I wish you good luck on whatever you decide :)

The car is fast, luxurious, stylish, and an eye-catcher that Germans cannot compete with. The engine is Ferrari and sounds fantastic! This is a wonderful car and it feels like you are actually driving with passion!

I've had my car since mid October 2014 and so far, I haven't had any major problems. The car drives really nicely and the exhaust is fantastic. My only complaint is the small rattles in the car, which can be a little annoying. However, I am confident that the dealer will resolve this when I bring it in for service...

If you're considering luxury sports sedans like Mercedes, Audi, or BMW in the $70k-$100k price range and want a fun driving experience, then the Ghibli is definitely worth considering. It has a loud exhaust (even louder than the Porsche 911), a twin-turbo V6 engine (with good gas mileage for a sports car), and is an absolute blast to drive! I highly recommend taking it for a test drive. Most dealerships offer great leasing options, with the base model starting at around $500/month for a 3-year lease. As someone who has owned both Audi A4 and A6 models, I can confidently say that the Ghibli is even more beautiful and faster! Its swooping Italian design and large Trident symbol on the front grille give it an aggressive look that's sure to turn heads. However, if you're looking for a high-tech gadget car with comfortable seating for 5 and plenty of legroom, this may not be the car for you. The Ghibli is a true Italian sports car with 5 seats for $70k. The only downside is that auto insurance and maintenance fees may be higher than other cars in the same price range.

Once you have test driven, you'll be seduced into buying/leasing the car. It's pure joy driving this car. Sometimes, I even turn off the sound system just to hear the marvelous exhaust sound.

After leasing my Maserati for a year, I experienced some issues with a rattle noise in the rear door and a cracking noise in the engine. Despite multiple visits to the dealership, the problems persisted and ultimately required a new door panel and engine replacement. While the repair process has taken longer than expected, I am confident in the dealership's ability to resolve the issue and ensure the car is in top condition. While my experience has had its challenges, I still believe in the quality of Maserati vehicles.
Dagmar Christiansen 2025-03-18
Vehicle year: 2015
Although the car has some pros such as great sound and Maserati badges, it has been quite a challenging experience. Unfortunately, I had to pay a significant amount for repairs and maintenance, including a $11,000 repair for a broken bolt on the sub-frame connector due to the car's low height, and a $4,800 brake and tire job. Additionally, I had to get four alignments in less than a year. The customer service experience was not great, unless you pay for their premium service. I am looking forward to the end of my lease. Unless there is an amazing deal, I would not consider getting another Maserati, and even then, I would only consider the Levante. It is not a suitable car for everyday use, as it bottoms out with more than two people in the car and the front end feels unstable. If you are willing to spend the money, I would recommend a German car or an import. In fact, I would even suggest the Genesis 90 over this car.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Maserati Ghibli Sq4. I absolutely love my car, but I did have an issue with the dashboard material on the passenger side peeling up after 6 months out of warranty. I reached out to customer care, but unfortunately, they were unable to cover the defect. I understand that this is a common issue with these cars, as I read on a Maserati forum. It's a shame because I was considering getting a Grandturismo, but I'm hesitant now. I still love my car, but I wish they would stand by their workmanship. I believe that if it's a mechanical issue, I'm responsible, but material shouldn't be ripping up in under 5 years. Thank you for listening to my experience!

I have owned a Maserati Ghibli Q4 for the past year. As someone who has driven many luxury cars in the past, I would like to share my experience. Unfortunately, I have encountered several issues with this car and have not been satisfied with the customer service provided by Maserati. In my opinion, it may be worth considering other options. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts.

I've been a proud owner of an S-Class for 15 years, but recently decided to downsize. After considering the Maserati Quattroporte, I realized that the Ghibli was the perfect fit for me. The price, size, and looks were all just right. When the car was delivered, I was blown away by its stunning appearance. However, after owning it for a while, I've noticed a few issues. The transmission can be a bit clunky and slow in comfort mode, but too aggressive in sport mode. It would be great if there was an auto mode to address this issue. Additionally, the car is quite low and tends to scrape on inclines, which can be frustrating. A lift-system would be a helpful addition. The brakes are also quite sensitive and inconsistent, which can take some getting used to. Lastly, the maintenance costs are quite high for a sub-$90k car, which is a bit disappointing. Overall, I would recommend considering a German vehicle, unless you enjoy the attention that comes with owning a Ghibli. That's just my two-cents.
