2009 Chevrolet Avalanche problems

The Chevrolet Avalanche is a four-door, five- or six-passenger pickup truck that was manufactured by General Motors. The Avalanche was a hybrid between the Chevrolet Suburban SUV and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, sharing the chassis with the Suburban. Unlike a typical pickup truck where the bed is mounted separately from the cab on the frame, the bed of the Avalanche was integrated with the cab body. It also featured a "midgate" behind the second row of seats that could be folded down, with the seats, to create a longer bed area. The Avalanche was produced across two generations starting in 2001 and ending in 2013.

Breaking with a long-standing tradition, the Avalanche was not available as a GMC, but only as a Chevrolet. Instead, Cadillac would sell a re-badged Avalanche; however, the midgate design would be adapted for use on the GMC Envoy XUV and Hummer H2 SUT.

First generation (2001–2006)

The Avalanche was launched in September 2001 as a 2002 model on the GMT800 platform. First year Avalanches featured light gray plastic body cladding, intended to provide visual distinction from the Suburban/Yukon XL. The Avalanche also gave the public an advance look at the next generation of front fascia designs for the entire GM line. A full-length chrome strip splits each lamp assembly and the grille, with a gold Chevrolet "bow tie" in the center. The hood and fenders featured aggressive folds, in contrast to the softer designs seen on other models built on the GMT800 platform.

Avalanche was nominated for the North American SUV of the Year award and was Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 2002.

The Avalanche was originally marketed as being able to "change from an SUV to a super SUV." This was made possible by a plastic cover and an exclusive "midgate," called the Convert-a-Cab system by GM, which could open and close. The midgate was a divider behind the second row of seats that could be folded down, with the seats, to create a longer bed area, or folded up to make a larger cab area. A similar midgate was found on the Cadillac Escalade EXT (a rebadged Avalanche), Hummer H2 SUT, and GMC Envoy XUV.

The truck was offered as a half-ton 1500 series with a Vortec 5.3L V8 producing 285 hp (216 kW) or as a three-quarter-ton 2500 series with a Vortec 8.1L V8 with 340 hp (253 kW) and the 4L85-E four-speed transmission. The base layout is rear-wheel drive, but there is an available with selectable high/low four-wheel drive. Avalanche 2500 models from 2004–2006 were exclusively available with four-wheel drive.

For those who planned to go off-road in their Avalanche, a Z71 Off-Road package was available that added features such as off-road suspension, GM's AutoTrac full-time push-button four-wheel-drive system, all-terrain P265/70R17 white-lettered Goodyear tires, seventeen-inch alloy wheels, leather seating surfaces with waterproof accents, front dual power bucket seats, cloth door panel inserts, GM's OnStar telematics system, all-weather rubber floor mats, Chevrolet bowtie emblems embedded into the backrests of the seats (for 2002 models), dual-zone automatic climate controls with rear HVAC vents and remote controls, remote radio controls with headphone jacks for two pairs of headphones, a security system, gray-finished side running boards, power-adjustable, heated side-view mirrors, SRS side impact airbags. Aside from these details, a Z71 Off-Road decal on the rear side panels identified an Avalanche equipped with this package. Full leather seating surfaces were an available option, also removing the cloth door panel inserts, and also added heated front seats.

For those who preferred the styling of the Z71 Off-Road package but did not plan to take their Avalanche off-road, a Z66 Premium On-Road package was also available. The Z66 On-Road package featured all the equipment that the Z71 Off-Road package offered but replaced the off-road suspension with sport on-road suspension and did not offer four-wheel drive. Aside from these details, a Z66 On-Road sticker on the rear side panels identified an Avalanche equipped with this package. As with the Z71 Off-Road package, full leather seating surfaces without the cloth accents were an available option, also removing the cloth door panel inserts, and also added heated front seats.

To further distinguish it from its Silverado siblings, the Avalanche was practically fully equipped and only came with bodyside cladding. The Avalanche included features such as 16-inch alloy wheels and tires (chromed steel on the 2500 model), an AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and six speakers, cloth seating surfaces, front bench seat with power front driver's seat, power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, full instrumentation, dual front airbags, and air conditioning. Options included OnStar telematics system, cassette player, leather seating surfaces, front dual power bucket seats that could be heated, and side airbags for the front seats. A North Face Edition, in partnership with the North Face brand included limited exterior color options, a unique Ebony/Green leather interior, special exterior ornamentation and decals, white-faced gauges, OnStar telematics system, specially colored door panel inserts and speaker grilles, and more.

For 2003, the Avalanche was slightly changed. 2003 models featured a darker cladding, but GM's new president, Rick Wagoner, demanded the removal of this "unpopular" trim (as did certain elements of the public). From mid-year, Avalanche could be ordered without cladding. The uncladded model, known as "Without Body Hardware" (or its initialism "WBH," which is also an RPO code), and alternatively called "slicksides" by GM marketers, resembled the 2003–2005 Silverado 1500 in the front. A new interior—shared with the Tahoe and Suburban—added a new, larger steering wheel with subsequent audio, cruise, and speed controls; an optional six-speaker premium Bose sound system with external amplifier; a new gauge cluster with information center and memory for the front driver's seat, brake and accelerator pedals, and side-view mirror position (on some models); new radio head units, which included an AM/FM stereo with either a single-disc or six-disc CD/MP3 changer, Radio Data System, and optional XM Satellite Radio; standard OnStar telematics system with steering wheel controls; new warning chimes that played through the vehicle's audio system instead of through a separate speaker behind the dashboard; and newly available 17-inch alloy wheels and tires. Optional features included rear audio controls with headphone jacks and a rear DVD entertainment system by Panasonic with wireless headphones. The WBH option was only available in the 1500 series.

Common 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche problems

The Chevrolet Avalanche 2009 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues are primarily related to the vehicle's accessories, interior, and engine.

  • Throttle Body Failure: This issue is prevalent in the second-generation Chevrolet Avalanche, including the 2009 model. The throttle body, which is part of the air intake system, may fail due to sensor malfunctions. Symptoms include a check engine light with a P2135 trouble code and reduced engine power. The solution is to replace the throttle body, as cleaning it may not solve the problem.
  • EVAP System Problems: The Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system in the 2007-2013 Chevrolet Avalanche has been reported to have issues. This system keeps fuel vapors contained and prevents them from being released into the atmosphere. Common symptoms include a check engine light, rough idling, and difficulty starting the truck. To fix this issue, it is recommended to start by checking the gas cap, EVAP purge valve, and vent valve.
  • Door Handles Breaking: The outside door handles, particularly near the pivot area, are prone to breaking in the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche. This issue is more common in the outside door handles but can also affect the inside door handles. To avoid breaking the door handles, it is recommended to open doors carefully, especially from the side where the plastic is fastened to the door .
  • Fading Plastic Trim: The plastic trim in the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche may fade due to exposure to sunlight and heat. This issue is less prevalent in the second-generation Avalanche compared to the first generation, as there is less cladding on the sides. To fix the fading plastic trim, owners can use a heat gun, trim restorer, or even peanut butter as a temporary solution.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the Chevrolet Avalanche 2009. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the vehicle's longevity and safety.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-01
  • VIN: 3GNEC12019G
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The passenger side air bag was replaced under a current recall (N212328790) however, once they fixed the issue at Love Chevy (Inverness, FL), the air bag light stayed on. It has never shut off and after speaking with the dealership as well as Chevrolet, they refuse to fix the issue they caused. I do not know if the recall has actually been fixed. Additionally, I am unable to refuel appropriately due to another recall (that my vehicle apparently isn't a part of), however, based on the amount of people that have the same problem, it should be a wider issued recall. This is for Chevy recall # 08411 for the Fuel System Control Module. It affects the charcoal canister, along with purge value and corresponding lines. Depending on how bad, charcoal canister needs replacement, even possibly the lines, as well as the gas tank. Very expensive fix that Chevy refuses to address. This is a common problem that mechanics see with these vehicles.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-26
  • VIN: 3GNEC22019G
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I purchased the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche new in October 2009. While in warranty I noticed the dashboard was cracking and took it to the dealer, Four Stars Auto, in Henrietta, Texas. At that time I was told they would order a new dash board and replace it. I took the truck in for replacement of the dash board on the scheduled date. After the truck was out of warranty the dash board cracked again in the same place. I suspect the dash was repaired and painted and not replaced, but I have no proof so I did not contact the dealer. Since that time I have learned this has been an issue with other owners of GM trucks and nothing can be done about it other than replacing the dash, which is a very expensive repair for someone that is retired and on a fixed income. My dash board has now cracked in at least four places and seems to be getting worse. I have heard this could cause issues with the deployment of the airbags, not to mention diminished resale value.

Additionally, GM is recalling certain 2007-2008 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming or "Zone C." These vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated passenger frontal inflators containing phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate one, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed on February 23, 2021. Second notification letters will be mailed once the remedy is available. Negative 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche car reviews

  1. Rogers Yundt 2024-10-05

I purchased a used 2008 Avalanche LTZ on January 12th, 2012, and initially thought it was my dream truck. However, I have encountered several issues with it, despite it having just over 80,000 miles. These include the service suspension light and service parking assist light coming on, the rear spoiler falling off, the back-up camera ceasing to function, the door handle breaking, and the brakes locking up in the middle of a busy interstate in MI. Unfortunately, this left my wife and kids stranded 45 minutes away from home. Additionally, the dash rattles. Despite these setbacks, I am confident in my decision to purchase this truck and will continue to address any issues that arise. However, in the future, I may consider a Dodge as an alternative option.

I purchased my 'dream truck' in 2009 with only 5,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, my experience with the vehicle has not been positive and I would not consider purchasing another GM product. By 27,000 miles, I began experiencing chronic driveshaft issues that have yet to be resolved by GM. Additionally, I have encountered problems with the dashboard, handles breaking, and various pieces falling off the vehicle. The truck also drives heavily and has poor gas mileage.

I purchased a brand new 2008 Avalanche in May 2008 and have taken great care of it. However, I have noticed that it uses an excessive amount of engine oil. Within three months of purchase, the rear main seal had to be replaced, and at two years old, the fan needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, after seven years, the dash has become fracked and looks unsightly, with paint peeling and both quarter panels rusting. I also had to replace the speaker in the driver's side door. At nine years old, I had to replace the HVAC fan. Despite these issues, I still find the travel comfort to be excellent. However, for my next vehicle, I am considering a 2018 F150.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned your Cruise doesn't hold going downhill and Chevy says it's within spec. That must be frustrating! Have you tried using your brakes to control your speed? Also, you mentioned that the rear seat could use more leg room and the seat belts are hard to close when using with a children's car seat. I completely understand how important safety is, especially when it comes to our little ones. Thanks for sharing your feedback!

  5. Paxton Mertz 2024-03-07

My experience with driving and owning this vehicle has been extremely disappointing. Despite spending $30,000 on it, I have had to take it to the shop at least ten times for various issues. Some of these issues are the same ones I experienced with a 2000 Chevy pickup that I bought brand new ten years ago. These issues include a knocking engine, a hard downshift, noise in the steering column, defective door locks, interior noise around the dash area, a bad cam in the motor that had to be replaced, wind noise, popping noise when turning, a faulty battery, and a broken door weld, to name just a few. It is unacceptable for a vehicle at this price point to have so many issues over the course of several years.

  1. Garrett Stiedemann 2025-01-04

Nothing beats this vehicle for flexibility, functionality, performance and comfort. An awesome combination for an active family of four. I'm so glad to hear that you're averaging almost 19 overall with typical NJ suburban traffic. Overall, it sounds like you're extremely satisfied with the entire package, and I couldn't be happier for you. It's great to hear that this is the best truck you have ever owned. Thanks for choosing Chevy!

  2. Ike Daniel 2024-11-19

This vehicle has great truck abilities without the typical truck appearance. It is comfortable to drive and has great towing capabilities. Although it may not be the quickest to start at a green light, it's important to remember that it is a heavy vehicle.

  3. Jakob Larson 2024-11-18

It's great to hear that you're such a big fan of the Chevrolet Avalanche! This versatile vehicle is a true standout, and it's no surprise that you've owned three of them. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us.

  4. Cleo Ritchie 2024-11-16

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your truck! I noticed that you chose the LS model, which is a great choice. It's a few thousand dollars cheaper and has the 40/20/40 split bench, which I think is a great feature. I also love how easy it is to get into the truck, even without the running boards. It's great that you can haul large objects with the midgate and still get excellent performance. And 21.8 MPG on a recent road trip? That's amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

  5. Enrico Fisher 2024-10-19

I absolutely love my 04 Avalanche! It has been the most useful vehicle I have ever owned. Recently, I took advantage of the GM situation and purchased an 09 model. Since moving from a larger metro area to a country setting, I have found the Avalanche to be even more useful as a full-size truck for hauling materials. The comfort of the vehicle is unmatched, making it perfect for long trips with friends. I have put almost 100K miles on my 04 and never experienced any problems. I am confident that the 09 will be just as reliable. The first-class appearance of the vehicle adds to the fun of driving it, and my friends always enjoy riding in it.
