Common 2012 Lexus Rx450h problems
The 2012 Lexus RX 450h, a hybrid luxury crossover SUV, has been praised for its low emissions and excellent fuel economy. However, like any vehicle, it has its common problems that owners have reported.
One of the most frequently reported issues is electrical problems, particularly with the non-engine electrics such as the media system and windows.
Another common problem is premature brake wear, which has been a consistent complaint among RX 450h owners. This issue can cost between $40 and $248 for parts.
Additionally, some owners have reported problems with the suspension system, particularly the shock absorbers. These issues can be caused by the heavy weight of the vehicle, which can put a lot of pressure on the suspension components.
The Lexus RX 450h also has a hydraulic component called the actuator, which communicates with the ECU to take control of the brakes in an emergency situation. Some RX 450h models have unreliable anti-lock braking systems, and the actuator is often to blame. The actuator needs to be replaced for the system to function correctly, with average repairs costing £53.03 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.
Lastly, the fuel pump impeller in some RX 450h models may crack, leading to fuel pump failure. This issue is more common in the second generation of the 450h, which came out in 2016.
In summary, the 2012 Lexus RX 450h has several common problems that owners have reported, including electrical issues, premature brake wear, suspension problems, and fuel pump failure. While these issues can be costly to repair, Lexus has a strong reliability record, and the first generation of the RX 450h has not been subject to any recalls, indicating its overall reliability.
What are the common faults on a Lexus RX450h?
The following problems are often reported by owners.
- Broken fuel pump. The fuel pump impeller may crack, causing the low-pressure fuel pump located in the fuel tank to stop working. ...
- Scuffed alloys and bodywork. This is less to do with the car itself and more to do with the driver.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-11
- VIN: 2T2BK1BA4CC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: October 20, '23 Our recent DEAD STOP! Whistle blower! Did you know that when the alternator goes out on a Lexus, that the car draws down energy from the battery to keep the car going? That's only for about a mile or so, then the car shuts down! You can't steer and THE ENGINE STOPS RUNNING and you have no power as you come to a dead stop, whether on the freeway, or one lane mountain pass road, where we would have been later. What would we have done? Scary! Luckily, our Lexus stalled on a city street nearing our on-ramp to the freeway. (needing to be towed.) Lexus has a serious engineering-defective-design-flaw that probably is responsible for accidents. Thanks, [XXX] . Pass it on please! UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- Summary: Sunroof exploded while driving in middle lane of 5 lane interstate. Cars, semi trucks all around me, center section of sunroof glass blew up and back into a pickup truck directly behind me. Pieces of glass flew in all directions. Luckily the moonroof/sunroof and interior panel were closed. No one was hurt. Other than a loud POP! then 2-3 seconds later an explosive BOOM! no warning light or message came on. Took the car to a local windshield shop, then a local Lexus dealer, another repair shop next week - all within 10 mi radius from where I live. Problem could not be reproduced, no one will confirm how it could have happened. Filed this report after reading about other Lexus - other mfg - having same issue.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- VIN: 2T2ZK1BA0CC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Lexus never informed me or the dealer that the hatchback lift will fail if the weather is below 60 degrees. Sometimes even warmer. I replaced the hatchback lift when I was up in WV and loading up my vehicle and the hatchback almost knocked me out! It happened on several occasions. When I called the dealer they informed me that is normal. Normal. It could of killed me or knocked me out and given me concussion. Came back to Florida and it did the same thing this time high 60's low 70's. I replaced them and it happened again. These hatchback lifts should not happen. A mechanic had a gash in his forehead because I was explaining it to him and the damn hatchback came down on him. He couldn't catch it on time. It came down so quickly. Well, I have to replace the hatchback lift again. This is so wrong. This products especially on a Lexus should not be doing this. Very very dangerous.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the RX450h! It's great to know that you find it comfortable and fun to drive. While it may take some time to get used to all of its capabilities, I'm happy to hear that basic operation is easy and intuitive. I commute 160 miles every day and I'm happy to report that I get an average of 27.5 mpg when I'm hanging with traffic, 29 mpg when I'm set on 65, and 33 mpg on the 101 from San Jose to L.A. north or south. I carpool with two others who sleep to and from work, and we all pay $10 each, so I virtually have no gas bill. One of my carpool mates has had back surgery and claims that the seat is the most supportive and comfortable seat he has ever sat in. The sound quality is fantastic, even with the model just below Mark Levinson. I usually keep the radio off and marvel at how quiet and relaxing the drive is. The car has great power when you need it and stays in electric only mode, babying the gas up to 45 mpg. In and around Carmel, Gilroy, and Tahoe, I get 26 mpg.

This is my third Lexus and second hybrid, and I am very satisfied.

This is definitely the best car I have ever owned. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, I couldn't change the year in the survey below, but I recently bought another certified pre-owned 2015 Lexus 450h.

I'm currently getting an average of 28mpg with 5,000 miles on the car. During a recent vacation, I drove through the mountains with a loaded car and got about 25mpg, but on normal driving around town, I've been able to get around 30mpg. When I decided to buy this car, I had high expectations, and I'm happy to say that it has exceeded them. The ride quality is exceptional, and the car is very comfortable. It also has enough technical features to keep me entertained on long drives. Although it's not a sports car, the handling is very good for its size, and the engine and CVT transmission are a perfect match. Living in a dark area, I find the adaptive headlights to be extremely helpful and bright at night.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback on our fuel economy. After driving 8500 miles, we've been averaging 25.5 mpg. As a suburban/rural Ohio mom with a family of 5 teens, we haven't been doing any special driving. It's quite a bit different from the 29 combined mpg we were represented with, so we're a bit disappointed. Thanks for listening!

The ride can be quite uncomfortable, especially if the road surface is not smooth. It is disappointing that the only front 12v outlet is located in a difficult-to-reach spot. It would have been more convenient to have a second outlet. The price of the 450h is quite high, but unfortunately, it does not live up to the luxurious standards of Lexus. This is our third and final Lexus unless the suspension system is improved. It is unfortunate to see the decline in the quality of Lexus SUVs, especially when compared to the comfortable and soft-riding RX series from 1999-2009. We have only driven 3000 miles in the past 6 months, as our Honda truck is much more comfortable. We will be looking for a different car next year.

The integrity of the cabin was compromised, and it is unclear whether it was due to post-earthquake radioactive material or the use of cosmoline. Although Lexus denies the use of cosmoline, the service department at the dealership claimed that this toxic substance was used, resulting in noxious fumes. Unfortunately, the dealership would not test the car under similar circumstances. As a result, my wife and child fell ill, and we had to return the car within a month, incurring a $5000 penalty. While the dealership was willing to help, the Lexus company was uncooperative. I am now considering reaching out to Federal and state regulatory authorities and pursuing litigation. In the unlikely event that Lexus stands behind their product, I will update my statement. However, I found Lexus corporate to be bureaucratic, and the dealership had changed their story many times, such as claiming that the noxious fumes would burn off.
