Lexus Rx400h problems

The Lexus RX (Japanese: レクサス・RX, Hepburn: Rekusasu RX) is a luxury crossover SUV sold since 1998 by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. Originally released in its home market of Japan in late 1997 as the Toyota Harrier, export sales began in March 1998 as the Lexus RX.
Considered as the first luxury crossover SUV, five generations of the RX have been produced to date, the first being compact in size, and the latter classified as mid-size. Both front- and four-wheel drive configurations have been used on the RX series, and several gasoline powertrain options, including V6 engines and hybrid systems, have been offered. In the Lexus model lineup, the RX sits below the larger Lexus LX (marketed as the Toyota Land Cruiser body-on-frame SUVs outside North America, respectively), and above the shorter and less wider, but taller GX SUV. The name "RX" stands for "Radiant Crossover". It has also been labelled as "Recreational Cross Country" in some markets. The RX's current Toyota counterpart is the Highlander/Kluger; past counterparts included the Harrier and Venza.
The first-generation RX 300, fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, began sales in 1998. The Japanese market Harrier released in 1997 also offered a 2.2-liter inline-four, later uprated to 2.4 liters. The second-generation RX 300 (3.0-liter V6) and RX 330 (3.3-liter V6) models went on sale in 2003, with both variants supplanted by the more powerful RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) in 2006. Like the previous series, a 2.4-liter inline-four engine was sold alongside the 3.0-liter V6 in the Japanese market Harrier. In 2005, a hybridized gasoline-electric version of the 3.3-liter second-generation model was made available as the RX 400h in export markets and as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan. For the third generation released in 2009, both RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) and RX 450h (3.5-liter V6 hybrid) models were initially offered, with an entry-level RX 270 (2.7-liter inline-four) offered by Lexus in some Asian markets, including in Japan, since 2010. Since the release of the third generation, Japanese sales have occurred under the RX name as opposed to Harrier as had been the case previously. In the fourth generation, a turbocharged (2.0-liter inline-four) RX 200t/300 model was introduced to replace the previous 2.7-liter unit.
The RX has been assembled at Toyota Motor Kyushu since launch. The RX and RX Hybrid were the first Lexus models to be built outside Japan, with North American market versions produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ontario beginning 2003 (RX) and expanded in 2014 (RX Hybrid). Hybrid transaxles are built at the Kokura plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka since 2009.

- Summary: * Our 2008 Lexus RX 350 dashboard is cracking: areas of safety concern are the cracks around the ignition switch, the air bags, and the instrument panel. * There are cracks all around the ignition switch which places it in jeopardy of malfunctioning to include releasing dangerous fumes and dangerous fragments (scrapnel), and/or falling out. * The air bags are a grave concern as they may not deploy due to the cracks in the dashboard. * The instrument panel has a backup camera that may also be negatively impacted. There was a safety recall on these dashboards, and Lexus claimed that they were waiting on parts and that we would be contacted. We were never contacted by Lexus, and when we contacted them on several occasions, Lexus told us that they were not going to replace the dashboard. The cracks in my dashboard are extremely serious concerns for my family's safety, which is why this vehicle is only used if there's an in an emergency due to the safety concerns. We live in south Georgia, and the dashboard began cracking / melting as a result of heat and humidity. Lexus has refused to honor the agreement that it made in accordance with its "Warranty Enhancement Program." I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your RX! It's great that you're able to get both good fuel mileage and brisk acceleration. While the navigation system can be a bit cumbersome, the interior is nicely appointed and flawlessly assembled. The engine runs smoothly and quietly, and the CVT is also very smooth. It's unfortunate that there is some wind noise, but overall it sounds like a very well put together vehicle. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

My RX400h has reached 150,000 miles and unfortunately, some things are starting to wear out. It's a 2008 model, so it's not surprising. However, I've been keeping up with regular scheduled maintenance, such as changing the water pump and belt at 70,000 miles, and replacing the front shocks and struts at 148,000 miles. The only issue I'm having is with the stereo ML amplifier, which cuts out frequently, rendering the sound system inoperable. The telescopic steering wheel also stopped working at 149,000 miles, and the Lexus dealer said the upper column needs to be replaced, which would cost around $3,000. While it would be nice to get everything fixed, the resale value isn't there at this mileage. On the bright side, the engine and CVT transmission are holding up very well with excellent performance and no fluid leaks.

Our first hybrid SUV has been with us for 7 years and has driven over 105k miles in both city and rural areas, including dirt roads. The 400h model has consistently performed well, even in blizzards and icy/snowy conditions in hilly New England winters. It is super comfortable - I'm 5'5

It's difficult to find a used Lexus in this model because they are such great and comfortable cars that people tend to hold onto them. Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on one that was kept in almost immaculate condition. It looks and runs great, and I even purchased two years of dealer warranty in case the batteries need to be replaced soon (although they are expected to last 10 years). The only downside is the gas mileage, which has been averaging around 23 mpg over the past two weeks (the factory indicates 26 mpg). This may be due to older batteries or my driving style. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my Lexus! :)

I purchased this vehicle when it had 64K miles on it, and now it has 102K. My worst tank of gas was 24mpg, and the best was 29.25mpg. On average, I get between 25 and 27.50 with mixed driving. However, when driving at high speeds on the highway (75-84), I only get around 22mpg. I've noticed that I get higher mileage when driving at lower speeds, which is to be expected. I read a review of this vehicle where someone complained about poor mileage, but I think there was either something wrong with their vehicle or they had poor driving habits. Many people tend to accelerate quickly and brake hard, which is not the best way to drive. If you use softer driving habits, you can get 26-28mpg. It's important to think like a hybrid driver. The navigation system works well, but there are two exceptions. Firstly, it's incredibly frustrating that a passenger cannot program the vehicle while the car is in motion. Secondly, the warning notice that displays for 5 or 6 seconds every time you hit the NAV button can be annoying. There should be a way to turn it off.

I love my Lexus RX 400h and have driven it for 98,000 miles. However, I have been experiencing some frustrating service problems lately. The cruise control, battery, and radiator have all needed repairs, and just yesterday the timing belt, pulleys, and water pump had to be replaced at Lexus' request, costing me over $2500 in less than a year. As an owner of a first-year model in this series, I wonder if these issues are common or if it's just my SUV. Can anyone relate?

Vehicle year: 2008
Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Lexus RX400h. I noticed that there was an issue with the brake actuator in these models that could potentially deactivate the brakes at any time. I called Lexus in July 2016 to report that while driving on the freeway, my ABS VCS light went on, I heard a high pitched sound that went on continuously and I lost my brakes. I was with my 8-year-old daughter at the time, and it was a very scary experience for both of us. When I called Lexus Jim Falk Beverly Hills service department, they suggested that I turn off the engine and wait a few minutes because the ABS needs to reset. This happened to me three more times, and I followed the same procedure each time. However, just last week, I was driving my pregnant wife to the doctor, and this issue happened again, and we almost hit the car in front of us. I immediately brought it to Longo Lexus service department, and they told me that my brake actuator needed to be replaced, which would cost me $4,000 to fix. They also informed me that this is a known issue with the Lexus RX400h and that there was a campaign that replaced these for free in 2016, which had expired on December 31, 2017. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline. I called Lexus corporate office and explained my situation, but they said that there was no proof that the car lost its brakes because no one inspected it at that time. I was shocked when they suggested that I drive a car with no brakes to a Lexus dealer that was 10 miles away. I hope that Lexus can address this issue and ensure the safety of their customers. Thank you for listening to my story. And you know what? I trusted you when you said this was a common issue, because you're Lexus! But now you're asking me to pay $4,000 for your mistake? It's frustrating, and it makes me hesitant to recommend Lexus to others. It seems like safety isn't a top priority for them.

Hi there! I noticed that my RX400H only gets 20 MPG City. Also, when going over wider speed bumps with a small amount of loft, it sounds as if the engine is dropping out of the car with a loud bang. Additionally, there is mild steady vibration at times that can be felt in the steering wheel and seat armrest. I found the instrumentation to be a bit confusing, especially the cruise control which is on its own lever and moves with the steering wheel, making it difficult to access when turning. Have you experienced any of these issues?

After conducting extensive research on major automotive periodicals, I purchased a Lexus with high expectations. However, the vehicle did not meet my expectations as I was initially promised a fuel consumption rate of 38 mpg in town and 32 mpg on the highway, which was later changed to 32 mpg in town and 29 mpg on the highway with an average of 30+. Despite waiting until the vehicle had 5k miles, my overall average is a disappointing 24 mpg. Additionally, I experienced an issue with the windscreen fracturing without any impact, which was not repaired until I threatened legal action. Overall, my experience with this purchase has been unsatisfactory.

I've owned many luxury vehicles in the past, but unfortunately, this one has required the most repairs and has had some of the most difficult to diagnose problems. In comparison, my Mercedes never had any issues, and routine maintenance was always a pleasure with their loaner car service. My Grand Cherokees have been somewhat maintenance prone, but they have always been reliable and on schedule. However, this car has made me hesitant to drive it anywhere due to a shudder in the front end that nobody seems to be able to fix, even after replacing various parts. Additionally, the mileage is not great, averaging at 23 at best. The GPS is outdated and awkward to use, and updates are not worth the cost. Unfortunately, there is no way to add an auxiliary input for audio from any other source, and the back seat passengers can modify your GPS entries from the rear seat entertainment system, which can be frustrating. The car also has a lot of body roll in corners, which can be uncomfortable. The button and control layout of vital things like defrost and cruise control are all unintuitive ly placed or are a reach to get to, forcing you to take your eyes off the road. As someone who drives about 100k miles a year, this has been a challenging experience. I hope that Lexus can improve their future models, but for now, I will not be purchasing another Lexus.
