The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.

Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.

The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.

The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.

The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.

The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 2000 Lexus Gs400 problems

The Lexus GS400, produced from 1998 to 2000, is known for its advanced features and smooth driving experience. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to mechanical and electrical issues. Here are some common problems reported by GS400 owners:

  • Misfiring engine: A misfiring engine can be caused by faulty spark plugs, a malfunctioning ignition coil, or a clogged fuel injector. Symptoms include a rough or shaky idle, poor acceleration, or reduced power. If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue.
  • Engine stalling: This problem can be caused by a faulty fuel pump, a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor, or a clogged air filter. Symptoms include the engine cutting out or shutting off unexpectedly, difficulty starting the engine, or poor engine performance. If your engine is stalling, it's vital to have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue.
  • Transmission problems: Transmission issues reported by GS400 owners include delayed shifts and fluid leaks. These problems can be caused by worn or damaged transmission parts, low transmission fluid levels, or a malfunctioning transmission control module. If you experience any transmission issues, it's crucial to have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue.
  • Fuel pump failures: Some GS400 owners have reported fuel pump failures, which can cause the engine to stall or fail to start. Symptoms of a faulty fuel pump include difficulty starting the engine, reduced engine power, or a loud whining noise from the fuel tank.
  • Electrical issues: Electrical problems reported by GS400 owners include malfunctioning interior lights, power windows, and power door locks. These issues can be caused by blown fuses, corroded wiring, or a malfunctioning control module.

To avoid these common issues, it's essential to perform regular maintenance on your GS400, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid changes, and tire rotations. If you experience any of these issues, it's crucial to have your vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-22
  • VIN: JT8BH68X8Y0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY CAR SUDDENLY STOP WITH NO APPARENT REASON AT ALL. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE BUT IT DID NOT RESPONDED, EVENTHOUGH THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING PERFECTLY. EVERYTHING WAS WORKING BUT THE ACCELERATOR. WHEN TAKEN TO THE LEXUS DEALER THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE. THEY TOLD ME IT WILL COST ME AROUND $3,000.00 TO REPLACE IT. IS THIS NORMAL FOR THIS CAR TO HAPPEN OR IS IT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR?. WE DID NOT HAVE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE IT WAS EARLY IN THE MORNING BUT IT COULD BE WORSE DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC HOURS. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-02
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JT8BH68X2Y0
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: ON JULY 2 ,2009, MY WIFE STRUCK ANOTHER CAR BROADSIDE WITH OUR 2000 LEXUS GS400. THE POINT OF IMPACT ON THE LEXUS WAS WITH THE LEFT FRONT PORTION (HEADLIGHT AREA) OF THE FRONT. SHE WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, AND DID NOT HAVE TIME TO BRAKE. THE IMPACT, AND SEATBELT, CAUSE A MODERATE SIZED BRUISE ON HER LEFT BREAST AREA. LEXUS INDICATES THEIR AIRBAGS DEPLOY ON FRONTAL OR "NEAR FRONTAL" COLLISIONS AT 8 TO 14 MPH. YET, IN THIS CASE, WHAT I THINK IS A "NEAR FRONTAL" COLLISION, THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. I CONTACTED LEXUS, BUT THEY CONTEND IT WAS NOT A "FRONTAL" COLLISION, AND THEREFORE THE BAG DID NOT NEED TO DEPLOY. THEN WHY DO THEY INDICATE THAT IN "NEAR FRONTAL" COLLISIONS THE AIRBAG WILL DEPLOY? I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE SPEED AND POINT OF IMPACT SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED THE AIRBAG, AND YET IT DIDN'T. I HAVE PHOTOS OF THE LEXUS SHOULD YOU WISH TO SEE THEM. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-04-10
  • VIN: JT8BH68X5Y0
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY FATHER, MING SUEN ON I-95 SOUTH BOUND NEAR I-15 INTER-CHANGE IN MY 2000 LEXUS GS400(30900 MILES). THE ACCELERATOR GOT STUCKED(NOT BY CARPET OR FLOOR MAT) MECHNICALLY, AND MY CAR DOWNSHIFTED ITSELF AND WENT INTO FULL POWER ACCELERATION AT THE ENGINE SPEED OF OVER 5000 RPM. I TRIED TO BRAKE WITH FULL FORCE, BUT FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, AND THE CAR WAS GOING AT 85MPH AND GAINING SPEED! THE WHOLE INCIDENT LAST FOR ABOUT 3-5 MINUTES, AND I DIALED "911" AND TRIED TO ASK FOR HELP. BEFORE THE CALL WAS CONNECTED, I MAGICALLY REGAIN CONTROL OF MY LEXUS. THE ACCELERATOR DIS-ENGAGED AND THE ENGINE SPEED RETURNED TO NORMAL. I FELT THE BRAKE WAS LOSING POWER AND BECAME VERY WEAK. I GOT OUT AT THE NEAREST EXIT AND PULLED INTO A GAS STATION. AS I GOT OUT MY CAR, I COULD SMELL THE BRAKES WERE BURNING, AND THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKE WAS FRIED. MY FATHER AND I WAS VERY LUCKY, BECAUSE IT WAS LATE AT NIGHT AND TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT ON THE FREEWAY. OTHER WISE, TRAVELING AT 85 MPH WITH FULL BRAKE AND NO CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE, WOULD DEFINATELY CAUSE SOME SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH! MY LEXUS IS CURRENTLY LOCATED AT THE LOCAL FLECHER JONES LEXUS, AND I AWAIT THE DEALERSHIP TO INPECT AND FOUND OUT THE PROBLEM. I WOULD HOPE THERE IS SOMETHING THIS ORGANIZTION COULD DO TO PREVENT SIMILAR INCIDENT TO HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE ON ANY OTHER LEXUS OWNERS.*AK

Negative 2000 Lexus Gs400 car reviews

  1. Camryn Wyman 2024-07-21

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my GS. I purchased it with 65k miles and it had a documented service history at the dealer all the way back to and including the window sticker. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues since then. The plastic case around the AC evaporator has failing adhesive that leaks water into the car, which is a $3400 repair. Additionally, the starter takes about 20 minutes to actually start, which is a $900 repair. On top of that, it will be due for the $1000 90K maintenance at the next oil change. That's a total of $5300 in maintenance before 90K miles. While I'm disappointed with these issues, I still appreciate my Lexus. However, I would definitely recommend considering potential repair expenses before purchasing one of their products. I've also had some rattles with the headliner and sunroof sunshade. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2000 Lexus Gs400 car reviews

  1. Porter Nikolaus 2025-01-03

My third Lexus... as always, the build quality and reliability are unsurpassed. The gas mileage is exceptional for a V8, achieving 22mpg in mixed driving. The engine is silky yet strikingly powerful, it just pulls and pulls. The transmission is very responsive when you throttle into it. The Nakamichi sound system is amazing. The bigger wheels and spoiler are a must-have, as they really give the car an aggressive look. All in all, this has been one of my favorite purchases ever!

  2. Monte Mayer 2024-11-25

The car has been great - reliable, fun, and nice to look at. It has solid brakes, which you definitely need.

  3. Albin Harber 2024-11-15

I recently purchased a 1999 Lexus GS 400 with 103,000 miles in June 2023. I was lucky enough to get a fantastic deal from my friend's dad who no longer drives. The car was in overall good condition and had been well-maintained. After purchasing it, I changed all the fluids and did a timing belt service. Although the original 24-year-old timing belt was still in good condition, I decided to replace it for peace of mind. While the gas mileage isn't great, the V-8 driving experience is exceptional and the car runs smoothly. I plan on keeping this car for a long time and have already started making some minor repairs. I will be replacing the driver-side mirror and front bumper, and then having a body shop fix the paint and do some other minor body work. The only other issue is that the front driver seat is slightly worn, but I am looking into options to get it restored.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used back in March 03 with 38k miles and it's been a great ride so far! Of course, like any car, it's had a few hiccups along the way. At 65k miles, I had to replace the alternator (I had to tow it from the turnpike, yikes!) which cost me $800. Then, at 80k miles, the check engine light came on and I had to replace the cat converter. Since my car has 2 converters, it ended up costing me $1500 per converter, so a total of $3000. Despite these issues, I still really like my car and plan to keep it for a while. In fact, I think it's even more reliable than a BMW or Audi! Thanks for listening.

Congratulations on your purchase of a used GS400 model! It sounds like you are thoroughly enjoying your daily drives down the long, curvy country road. The car's manual shifting option, POWER option, and economy mode with the VSC feature enabled seem to be working well for you. It's great to hear that the car is roomy with comfortable seats and easy-to-read gauges and instruments. While the steering may be slightly loose with a bit of understeer, it's all part of the luxury ride experience. Keep on grinning and enjoying your drives!
