Lexus Gs400 problems
The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.
Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.
The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.
The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.
The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.
The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common Lexus Gs400 problems
The Lexus GS400 is a luxury sedan that was produced from 1998 to 2005. While the car is known for its smooth driving experience and advanced features, it is not immune to mechanical and electrical issues. Here are some of the most common problems reported by GS400 owners, organized by category:
Engine Problems
- Low Engine Oil Pressure: Some GS400 owners have reported experiencing low engine oil pressure, which can be caused by a number of factors, including a faulty oil pressure sensor or a clogged oil filter. If left unaddressed, low engine oil pressure can lead to serious engine damage.
- Misfiring Engine: Misfiring engines can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. A misfiring engine can result in decreased performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased emissions.
- Engine Stalling: Engine stalling can be caused by a number of issues, including a faulty crankshaft position sensor, a dirty throttle body, or a clogged fuel filter. Engine stalling can be dangerous, especially if it occurs while driving.
Electrical System Problems
- Dead Battery: Some GS400 owners have reported experiencing dead batteries, which can be caused by a number of factors, including a faulty battery, a corroded battery terminal, or a parasitic drain on the electrical system.
- Malfunctioning Alternator: Malfunctioning alternators can cause a range of issues, including a dead battery, dim headlights, and electrical system malfunctions.
Transmission Problems
- Delayed Shifts: Some GS400 owners have reported experiencing delayed shifts, which can be caused by a number of factors, including low transmission fluid levels, a faulty transmission control solenoid, or a worn-out torque converter.
- Transmission Fluid Leaks: Transmission fluid leaks can be caused by a number of factors, including a faulty transmission pan gasket, a damaged transmission oil cooler line, or a worn-out torque converter.
Suspension and Steering Problems
- Uneven Tire Wear: Uneven tire wear can be caused by a number of factors, including misaligned wheels, worn-out suspension components, or underinflated tires.
- Steering Wheel Vibrations: Steering wheel vibrations can be caused by a number of factors, including misaligned wheels, worn-out suspension components, or unbalanced tires.
Fuel System Problems
- Poor Fuel Economy: Poor fuel economy can be caused by a number of factors, including a dirty air filter, a faulty oxygen sensor, or a malfunctioning fuel injector.
- Fuel Injector Issues: Fuel injector issues can be caused by a number of factors, including dirty fuel injectors, a clogged fuel filter, or a malfunctioning fuel pump.
It's important to note that many of these issues can be prevented or addressed through regular maintenance, such as regular oil changes, transmission fluid changes, and tire rotations. If you experience any of these issues with your GS400, it's important to take your car to a certified mechanic for diagnosis and repair. Ignoring these issues can lead to further damage and costly repairs in the long run.
How many miles does a GS400 last?
As long as you're driving normally and doing regular maintenance, the engine will last at least 300k miles.

- Summary: LEXUS STUCK PEDAL--I DRIVE A 1998 LEXUS GS400 WHICH I BOUGHT NEW. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT, I'D PRESSED THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN("FLOORED IT") MANY TIMES AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. HOWEVER IN MORE RECENT YEARS, I RARELY "FLOORED IT" . ONE TIME LAST SUMMER, I PUSHED THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN TO PASS A CAR AND THE PEDAL STUCK. MY CAR ACCELERATED FROM 35MPH TO 70MPH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS ON A LOCAL ROAD. I HIT THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES BUT IT KEPT SPEEDING UP. I WAS ABLE TO PRY UP THE PEDAL UP WITH MY TOE AVERTING A NEAR-ACCIDENT. THIS WAS BEFORE ALL OF THE NEWS WITH TOYOTA'S SUDDEN ACCELERATION CAME TO LIGHT. I DIDN'T TAKE THE CAR INTO THE LOCAL LEXUS SHOP BECAUSE, THEY CHARGE AT LEAST $2000 EVERYTIME I TAKE IT IN. I DROVE THE CAR FOR ANOTHER YEAR BUT MADE SURE NOT TO PRESS THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN. HOWEVER, I AM INTENDING ON TRADING IN THE CAR NOW AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE THE DEFECT IS FIXED BECAUSE ANY FUTURE OWNERS OF THIS CAR WILL NOT BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS A POTENTIAL HAZARD WAITING TO HAPPEN. I WANTED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE GOVERNMENT BEFORE TAKING IT IN BECAUSE (A) I WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO BE AWARE THAT LEXUS(NOT JUST TOYOTAS) HAS THIS PROBLEM OF STUCK PEDAL/ACCELERATION (B) IN CASE THE GOV WANTED TO CONDUCT ANY INVESTIGATION WITH MY VEHICLE REGARDING THE STUCK PEDAL FOR EVIDENCE OR RESEARCH BEFORE LEXUS DOES ANYTHING WITH IT(IT DID NOT INVOLVE A FLOORMAT-THE PEDAL JUST STUCK AND DIDN'T COME BACK UP AFTER I RELEASED MY FOOT) (C) COMPEL LEXUS TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR FREE BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY DEFECT BEFORE SELLING IT TO A FUTURE OWNER. I FEEL THIS IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO DO EXTENSIVE RESEARCH REGARDING THIS MATTER. LEXUS HAS MANAGED TO STAY OUT OF TOYOTA'S RECENT CULPABILITY ISSUES, BUT CERTAINLY MY LEXUS HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. YOU MAY ALSO WANT ENGINEERS TO EXAMINE MY PEDAL FOR MORE RESEARCH OR EVEN EVIDENCE AS TO WHY THIS OCCURS IN LEXUS/ TOYOTA VEHICLES. *TR

I recently purchased a 1999 Lexus GS 400 with 103,000 miles in June 2023. I was lucky enough to get a fantastic deal from my friend's dad who no longer drives. The car was in overall good condition and had been well-maintained. After purchasing it, I changed all the fluids and did a timing belt service. Although the original 24-year-old timing belt was still in good condition, I decided to replace it for peace of mind. While the gas mileage isn't great, the V-8 driving experience is exceptional and the car runs smoothly. I plan on keeping this car for a long time and have already started making some minor repairs. I will be replacing the driver-side mirror and front bumper, and then having a body shop fix the paint and do some other minor body work. The only other issue is that the front driver seat is slightly worn, but I am looking into options to get it restored.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used back in March 03 with 38k miles and it's been a great ride so far! Of course, like any car, it's had a few hiccups along the way. At 65k miles, I had to replace the alternator (I had to tow it from the turnpike, yikes!) which cost me $800. Then, at 80k miles, the check engine light came on and I had to replace the cat converter. Since my car has 2 converters, it ended up costing me $1500 per converter, so a total of $3000. Despite these issues, I still really like my car and plan to keep it for a while. In fact, I think it's even more reliable than a BMW or Audi! Thanks for listening.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my GS. I purchased it with 65k miles and it had a documented service history at the dealer all the way back to and including the window sticker. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues since then. The plastic case around the AC evaporator has failing adhesive that leaks water into the car, which is a $3400 repair. Additionally, the starter takes about 20 minutes to actually start, which is a $900 repair. On top of that, it will be due for the $1000 90K maintenance at the next oil change. That's a total of $5300 in maintenance before 90K miles. While I'm disappointed with these issues, I still appreciate my Lexus. However, I would definitely recommend considering potential repair expenses before purchasing one of their products. I've also had some rattles with the headliner and sunroof sunshade. Thanks for listening!
