Common 2018 Kia Stinger problems

The 2018 Kia Stinger has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the brakes, where some owners have experienced pulsing in the brake pedal, which could indicate warped rotors.

Another issue reported by owners is related to the transmission. Some owners have reported hard shifting, particularly in fourth and fifth gears

. This issue has been reported in both 2018 and 2019 models, indicating that it may be a more widespread problem.

The Kia Stinger has also been reported to have some minor issues, such as a redesign of the video screen, which some owners find awkwardly placed in the upper middle console.

The Kia Stinger has also been reported to have some issues with the engine auto stop/start feature, which is default-on and can be annoying for some owners.

Despite these issues, the Kia Stinger has been praised for its performance, practicality, and value. The car has been described as a "Korean cruise missile" and a "working man's Porsche Panamera" due to its blend of stylish, sporty, and practical features.

In summary, the 2018 Kia Stinger has been reported to have some common problems related to the brakes, transmission, and some minor issues. However, the car has also been praised for its performance, practicality, and value. It is worth noting that the car's warranty provides significant peace of mind for buyers, covering any issues that may arise during the first few years of ownership.

Are the Kia Stinger's reliable?

Reported problems with the Stinger are few, so far, with most relating to non-engine electrics, and most models in the Kia range have a good reputation for reliability.

What is the engine issue on the Kia Stinger?

Kia is recalling certain 2019-2020 K900 and 2018-2023 Stinger sedans with a 3.3-liter turbocharged engine due to concerns that the left turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly may deteriorate and leak oil. Over time, that pipe and the assembly may break down because of exposure to heat from the exhaust manifold.

Why is the Kia Stinger not selling well?

However, as shown by sales figures on GoodCarBadCar, the Stinger has not been the sales success that Kia would have hoped it would be. This is likely down to the high price tag for the V6 model when a comparable BMW, Mercedes or Audi is available for the same money or less.

Do Kia Stinger's have transmission problems?

If you don't routinely and consistently change your fluids at least every 30,000 miles or so, you may find that your Kia Stinger transmission will quickly slip.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
  • VIN: KNAE15LA7J6
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Casey Kia located in Newport News Virginia continues to delay the replacement of my fuel pump. I was told it was replaced but 2 weeks later I was having the same issue to the point where my car was decelerating on the interstate. After I took it back in for them to repair it I was told they would look into it. I received a call saying the fuel pump was never replaced and the only thing that had been done originally was a software update, so basically I was lied to and put in a very dangerous situation because a fire could've been caused while driving. They also said they were waiting for approval for the recall before they repaired it. Had I known it wasn't repair I wouldn't have driven the car. I was supposed to pick my car up on 07/26 but I was told they ordered the wrong part and it would be available to them on 07/29.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: KNAE25LA4J6
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: All of a sudden while driving on the road my vehicle lost total power in the middle of an intersection. I would pres the gas pedal and got no response the vehicle would not go. I had to turn car off and try starting it again then the vehicle got power. This keeps happening not everyday but it's happening about once a week while driving. There has been times where the car wouldn't restart for about an hour I got the car off the road and stayed stranded at night till it finally got power to move it would start but it would just putter like it wasn't getting enough fuel and my engine light came on. It is telling me something is wrong with the fuel rail , high pressure fuel pump, and it is running too rich. I have a little over 62,000 miles on it . Now there is a delay in take off it has lost a lot of power and is using a lot of fuel getting poor gas milage.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-03
  • VIN: KNAE55LC3J6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: I bought front and rear drilled and slotted brake rotors. I installed these on my car using the same name brand of brake pads front and rear. The fronts were perfect. The rear rotors had defective black zinc coating that caked on my brake pads. This layer of coating prevented contact between the friction surface of the rotor and friction material of the pad. I only drove the car 1/2 mile. My rear brakes would not work properly. I sent Brake Performance 14 pictures and a series of emails describing this. They shrugged it off as cosmetic. I had the remaining defective coating machined off the friction surface of the rotors. I sanded and cleaned the layer of defective coating off my brake pads. After this cleaning, the brakes worked as expected. I have installed their products on 3 vehicles using 10 rotors and 2 drums. Only these last 2 rotors had defective coating. It's concerning that they never considered the safety implications of the defective coating. The front and rear rotors were stored together in the same environment prior to install.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-16
  • VIN: KNAE55LC4J6
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Steering wheel began making noises that sounded like grinding of gears that sounded like it was coming from outside of the interior of the vehicle. The noise was heard loudly when turning the steering wheel after the car sat idle and occasionally after driving the car after several minutes of the car warming up. The noise occurred increasingly more frequent over 4 weeks. The steering also became more difficult with tension felt during turning the wheel. Eventually, the steering wheel locked completely during turning and became unable to turn the steering wheel while driving and turning the wheel. The risk of crash which put me and others at risk was narrowly avoided by stopping in the middle of an intersection multiple times while driving the car. The car was taken to the Kia dealership 3/16/23 and the problem was reproduced and confirmed by the dealer on 3/20/23 where it was inspected. When the steering wheel locked, a message related to the Lane Assist feature on the car appeared.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-02
  • VIN: KNAE15LA1J6
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Bought a CERTIFIED PREOWNED 2018 Kia Stinger from Russ Darrow Kia in Madison, WI Feb. 2021. Approx. Aug 2021 cylinder 3 on our 2018 Kia Stinger started misfiring. After replacing the spark plugs (x4 times) and coil packs, there was no improvement. We had it towed to Metro Kia of Madison because it was under Kia warranty still, and after 5-months and an engine replacement (including the long-block), we got our car back in Feb 2022. Flash forward to the end of Jan 2023, the Stinger starts driving rough. Idling harder, but no error codes are showing. After about 24hrs of very light driving because we knew something was wrong, an error code for cylinder 1 came up on my way home from work just a half mile away. When I got home, thick white smoke was billowing out of the exhaust which filled up the entire parking garage causing an environmental hazard to myself and my neighbors. So, I immediately open the garage doors and opened the windows to air everything out, and moved my car outside. I did some research online and figured I would try to replace the spark plugs and coil packs again, just to see if I could drive it to an independent shop because it is out of manufacturer warrenty by 3k miles. That didn't really help, and we ended up having it towed, again. After a week, find out they can't see anything on the top of the engine which has cause cylinder 1 to completely FAIL, and going to inspect for bottom side repair, plus labor, and whatever else is going to be close to $15k! Metro Kia basically said there was nothing they could do even though it was them who did the last repair. Russ Darrow Kia who originally sold us the vehicle also said we were screwed. We stopped work on the vehicle for now because we can't afford it and $2k in rentals. Opened a case with Kia on 2/14/23 due to the 2.0 THETA II engine recalled which Stingers are NOT included on, but haven't heard back yet. Never buying another KIA ever again because it's been nothing but PROBLEMS!

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-01
  • VIN: knae55lc1j6
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Adaptive front lighting system error. For the last several months, and more frequently in the last 2 weeks when the weather has been colder, the dashboard warning light for the adaptive headlights has come on -- initially intermittently, but now solid nearly every time I turn on the vehicle. Bluedriver OBDII tool tells me this is error code B2325: "Swivel module fault left short circuit or over temperature." I noticed the problem seemed to creep up and became more frequent when the temperature dropped. Others on Kia Stinger forums have reported the exact same issue: https://stingerforum.org/threads/dynamic-bending-light-failure.3820/ To me, this represents a safety problem, as the feature function is to provide Dynamic Bending (Swivelling) and Automatic Leveling (Leveling) to control headlight beam pattern with curves in the road. I have reported this problem to my local Kia dealer and to the national Kia customer service line, but neither of them seemed to have yet heard of the problem. Consumer was told by RAM truck would be brought to a RAM DEALERSHIP to have the diagnostic run!

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-17
  • VIN: KNAE45LC8J6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I took my 2018Kia Stinger into my local authorized Service Center (Nationwide Kia, Timonium MD.) on August 17,2021 to check recall # SC204 (Brake Vacuum Pump) and they determined that the recall DOES need to be performed, but they did not have the part(s) in stock to perform the recall. They had me bring the car back on September 21, 2021 after they confirmed my reason for the return visit and accepted my appointment. I dropped my car off on that morning only to get a call later that day that they did not do anything because they did not have the parts. They told me thy would follow up to complete the recall, which they never did even after my attempts to get them to do so. On November 5, 2021 I submitted a complaint with Kia Cutomer Service and they assigned case # 14469559. Since then, I have contacted Kia Customer Service approximately every 2 weeks and have only been able to get the "automated response" and no actual response. I am at the point that I must assume no one (the dealership or Kia America) will be of no help and I am certainly concerned that I have been driving my car for the last 5 months with a Brake Vacuum Pump that has been confirmed that it needs replacement. Thank you.

  • VIN: KNAE25LA3J6
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A USED 2018 KIA STINGER PREMIUM. I WAS NOTIFIED ONLINE THAT MY VEHICLE HAD AN OUTSTANDING RECALL, SC196A WITH A FIRE HAZARD FROM THE FUSE BOX. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH GARDEN GROVE KIA AND ASK NUMEROUS TIMES IF THE PART COULD BE ORDERED AHEAD OF TIME BEFORE I TOOK IT IN SO I DON'T HAVE TO BE INCONVENIENCED TWICE. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE FOR 3 HOURS FOR AN INSPECTION AND THEN THE PART WOULD BE ORDERED FOR ME TO COME BACK FOR THE INSTALL. I THEN CALLED THE HUNTINGTON BEACH DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME THE SAME THING. I HAVE CONTACTED KIA CORPORATE AND AM AWAITING AN ANSWER. THERE HAS TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT WAY OF DEALING WITH THIS RECALL. THIS SHOULD BE DONE IN A SINGLE APPOINTMENT AND IS A LIABILITY FOR ME TO HAVE TO RETURN LATER.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-10
  • VIN: KNAE55LC0J6
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON INTERSTATE GOING 70MPH WITH THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE ON AND MY SPEED SUDDENLY DROPS TO 50 ( LIKE SNAPPING YOUR FINGERS ). SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME. WHEN I STOPPED I CHECKED THE FRONT SENSORS TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NOTHING BLOCKING IT. A COUPLE WEEKS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED GOING ABOUT 70 ON INTERSTATE AND THE SPEED SUDDENLY DROPS TO ABOUT 50, BUT THIS TIME THE TRUCK BEHIND ME ALMOST REAR ENDED ME. BOTH TIMES WHEN THE SPEED DROPPED LIKE THAT I WAS FREAKING OUT AND TRYING TO GET MY FOOT BACK ON THE GAS AND GET MY SPEED BACK UP. A COUPLE WEEKS LATER I WAS GOING ABOUT 35 AND DID NOT HAVE THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE ON AND IT SUDDENLY STOPS AGAIN. THIS TIME THE CRASH WARNING LIGHT SHOWED UP ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE ERROR WARNING CAME UP AND SAID THE AUTONOMOUS BREAKING SYSTEM IS DISABLED. WE TOOK A PICTURE OF THE DASHBOARD. ON THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER OF THE PICTURE IT SAYS CRUISE AND SHOWS THE ERROR LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD. CRUISE WAS NOT ON SO I ASSUME IT WAS PART OF THE ERROR THAT CAME ON WITH THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS. I AM SCARED TO DEATH TO DRIVE MY CAR NOW. I HAVE 2 GRANDKIDS THAT ARE IN MY CAR 3-4 TIMES A WEEK. GOD FORBID I GET HIT AND SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MY BABIES!!! I TOOK THE CAR TO HENDRICK KIA IN CONCORD, NC SO THEY COULD SEE WHAT WAS WRONG. WHEN THEY HOOKED THE CAR UP TO THE COMPUTER NO ERROR CODES SHOWED UP. ONE OF THE GUYS HAS BEEN DRIVING MY CAR HOME AND TO WORK FOR 2 DAYS AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT HAPPENED AGAIN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO NOW.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-12-01
  • VIN: KNAE25LA2J6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: CAR HAS NO BRAKES WHEN INITIALLY STARTING IT AND BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS SO HARD THAT I AM UNABLE TO DEPRESS IT. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, THE BRAKE PEDAL BEHAVES NORMALLY. THIS PROBLEM HAS RESULTED IN ME ROLLING OUT INTO THE ROAD MORE THAN ONCE. I HAVE HAD THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE ANALYZED AND FIXED THREE TIMES. ONE TIME THEY REPLACED A VACUUM LINE AND THE OTHER TWO TIMES THEY HAVE REPLACED THE VACUUM PUMP. I AM CONCERNED THAT SOMETHING ELSE IS WRONG THAT IS CAUSING A BRAKE OVERPRESSURE CONDITION THAT IS CAUSING THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP AND THE VACUUM LINE FAILURES. THE DEALERSHIP IS TELLING ME THAT I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PICK UP MY CAR NOW THAT THE VACUUM PUMP HAS BEEN REPLACED AGAIN. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR WITHOUT FURTHER INVESTIGATION OF WHY BRAKES AND THE VACUUM PUMP KEEPS FAILING.

Negative 2018 Kia Stinger car reviews

This car looks awesome and has a lot of the latest technology. Although I own a Lexus and Porsche, I have never owned a KIA. When I went to the KIA dealer, I noticed that it was not as luxurious as a Lexus dealer. The car is beautiful, but I did notice that the seat and armrest are not very soft and are on the hard side. As someone who takes long trips, I wondered how comfortable I would be. The interior is well designed and has nice materials, but I am used to seeing a little wood in a sedan. When I sat in the back seat, I found it to be very cramped, and my head touched the roof. Unfortunately, the dealer only offered me $800 off the list price of $52,000. As much as I liked this car, I could not justify spending more than my Lexus for a KIA. I enjoy going to my Lexus dealer for an occasional oil change, and the KIA dealership just didn't feel as welcoming. If KIA wants to sell $50k cars, they need to better understand and give the customer the full experience.

KIA has made a nice car, but they could benefit from having more professional salespeople and better marketing tactics. The exterior of the car is similar to that of an Audi A5 Sportback, while the interior resembles that of a Mercedes. However, the materials and fit are still subpar. For instance, the push button is hidden behind the steering wheel, and the temperature gauge feels like cheaper silver plastic. Unfortunately, KIA does not offer a sunroof for the GT, and the dark roof materials make it a bit too claustrophobic for some. A lighter roof color would be better. Additionally, most of the GT1 and GT2 colors come only in red leather. To me, the gray Nappa is the best, but it only comes in blue, and few dealers carry it. There are lots of red, black, and white options. Unfortunately, my experience with the dealers was a turn-off, and I began looking at the Audi instead. It's about the same price without all the bling, including the cheap plastic airports on the hood that serve no function.

Positive 2018 Kia Stinger car reviews

I've been driving this car for over three years now and I absolutely love it! It has great power, handling, and looks. I've owned BMW M cars, Porsches, and Mercedes E class cars, but I prefer my Stinger over all of them. It's a lot of car for the money. I cross-shopped against the Alfa Gulia, Audi S5, and base model Porsche Panamera, but I chose the Kia not just because of the price, but also because of its handling and the feel of the interior. This is a great halo car for the Korean automaker to prove itself with, and they have done just that. By hiring the top German engineers and designers in their field, Hyundai-Kia has really paid off! I strongly urge anyone in the market for a fun sports sedan to give this car a shot! You won't be disappointed! After three plus years of ownership, every time I drive this car, I love it more. I haven't had any issues with the car since the repaint. It has great performance, great quality, and fantastic bang for your buck! The only thing I've done in 26k miles is upgrade the brake rotors and pads for more spirited driving in the dragon US129. I love this car as much today as the day I bought it!

I recently purchased the Premium silver exterior black leather interior KIA and have been driving it for two weeks now. While I cannot comment on its dependability yet, I did opt for the safety package which includes blindspot warning, lane departure warning, front and rear warning if you are too close, and a rear camera. The car handles well and accelerates nicely, making it a great option for me. Although it does not have a CD player, which I was not aware of when I purchased it, it still meets my needs. The car has good head and leg room, and one of its safety features is that it keeps itself in your lane for about 10-15 seconds. However, it is important to note that this feature turns off after warning you to hold the wheel, and the car will go into another lane if you do not grab the wheel. While it may not have the prestige of a German vehicle like a BMW or Audi, it is still a nice car. The rear hatch has a large window, but there is limited visibility when looking through the rear mirror. Additionally, it does not have a rear wiper, which would have been a nice feature to have. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and would recommend it to others.

Better than a BMW or Mercedes. It has better reliability and the same performance. It has everything I wanted in a car. You should definitely consider buying one!

I've been the proud owner of my certified used 2018 Stinger Premium for 9 months now, complete with a 3-year dealer maintenance service agreement. The Silky Silver exterior (which is of outstanding quality, by the way - dirt just rolls right off!) paired with the sleek black interior makes for a stunning look. The 4-cylinder engine is incredibly responsive, and I've been able to achieve an impressive 32 mpg at 75 mph on a 3-hour drive using cruise control in ECO mode. And let's talk about the Harmon Kardon sound system - it pumps out all the bass your chest can handle! The rear seat egress is also a breeze, unlike some European brands that can be quite tricky. Even six-foot adults can comfortably sit in the rear with a six-foot driver at the helm, thanks to the ample legroom. The overall styling of the vehicle is simply stunning, with elements that seem to pull from Maserati and Porsche. While Kia relied heavily on plastic to meet their vehicle material cost budget and reduce vehicle weight, it doesn't detract from the overall quality of the car. The only downside is that the rear lift back has plastic at the license plate area, which makes it impossible to attach a team spirit magnet. But that's a small price to pay for such a wonderful machine. Side note: I did experience a minor design defect with the two 1-inch wide roof clear plastic sleeves over the painted plastic rails becoming brittle, but it was covered under warranty. And while I'm making suggestions, it would be great to have an inter-cooled front seat option and for women, the car offers excellent security with all doors and the lift back staying locked until you use your remote control to open. Thanks, Kia, for creating such an amazing car that always turns heads and impresses everyone who sees it!

I've been admiring this car for a while now! It looks great and the design is very eye-catching. As a new owner, I don't have much experience with it yet, but just from looking at it, I love it. The drive is smooth and enjoyable.
