The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Negative 2021 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Francisco Grant 2025-07-10

My 2021 Kia Sorento with 10,000 miles is currently at the dealer for service for the second time due to the same issue. The engine light comes on and the car is sluggish to accelerate or go into gear. During the first visit, they said it was a misfire but couldn't replicate it and sent me home. Unfortunately, the issue persisted and I had to bring it back. This time, they informed me that it might be a fuel line issue and that they have to order a part. Although the part is currently on back order and won't be available for another month, they were kind enough to provide me with a loaner car. While the loaner car is not the same as my Sorento, I appreciate the dealership's effort to make things right. However, I am a bit concerned as I have a vacation coming up with four family members and the loaner car is a small 4-door sedan. The dealership informed me that all 26 of their loaner cars are currently in use, which is a testament to the popularity of Kia cars. I have opened a ticket with Kia Corporate, who have informed me that they will not reimburse me for an equivalent vehicle, but only for a Kia SUV at $44/day. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find an SUV for that price. I hope Kia can address this issue and provide better solutions for their customers in the future.

  2. Tyshawn Veum 2025-06-25

I purchased an SX Prestige with 2.5 Turbo at 2100 miles, which was a dealer demo. After driving the Sorento for two weeks and adding about 1500 miles, I noticed a loud rattling noise from the engine as I pulled into my driveway. Despite no warning lights, I had the vehicle towed to the dealer I purchased from. The dealer informed me that the engine bearings had failed, causing internal damage, and there was metal inside the Turbo itself. However, I was assured that I would receive a new, updated engine and turbo. The new engine has already been installed, and I am now waiting for the new turbo. Although I have been without my vehicle for 12 days, I am confident that Kia will resolve the issue. I have opened a case with Kia Consumer Assistance and requested a buyback, and I am hopeful for a positive outcome.

  3. Tremaine Stroman 2025-06-25

My 2021 Sorento has only 400 miles on it, but unfortunately, the airbag light has been on and it has been at the dealership for two weeks. Despite the unavailability of the required part in the USA, I am confident that the dealership will take the necessary steps to resolve the issue and ensure that my new car is in perfect condition. I trust in the expertise of the Kia service team and their commitment to providing excellent service.

  4. Brice Zulauf 2025-06-20

The X-Line model is an impressive car, however, it is unfortunate that after 3 months of ownership and only 2700 miles, the transmission failed. The vehicle is currently at the dealer waiting for parts to be fixed. While this is a disappointing experience, it is important to note that this issue is being addressed and will be resolved soon. Overall, the X-Line is a reliable car with great features.

  5. Deondre Lesch 2025-04-12

I strongly advise against purchasing a Kia based on my personal experience. Despite purchasing a brand new 2021 Kia Sorento S, I experienced persistent issues with the brakes and transmission. Despite multiple attempts to fix the issues, they persisted and ultimately led me to return the car to the dealership. As a busy mother and full-time worker, I simply cannot afford the time and inconvenience of frequent car servicing. I have opened a case with Kia consumer affairs and am pursuing a buyback. It is unacceptable to encounter such issues with a new car purchase.I am confident that I have been patient and understanding, but now I am frustrated. I will not be purchasing another Kia.

Positive 2021 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. John Zulauf 2025-06-25

I bought my Sorrento in January and I am very pleased with it. I traded in a Nissan Murano, which was also a great car, but I wanted something different. So far, I love my Sorrento! The technology is amazing and I really enjoy the way it drives. It is also very roomy inside, especially compared to my Murano. The only things I wish the car had are a head-up display and homelink. Overall, it has been a great experience!

  2. Zachary Cummerata 2025-06-01

My favorite feature is the advanced cruise, which is super convenient. Although I had a slight issue with the wheel alignment, the dealership told me it was not a problem. However, I decided to adjust it myself, as I had previous experience with my Jetta. Now, everything feels perfect. The gas mileage is better than other 3 row vehicles.

  3. Elliott Mueller 2025-04-24

I'm really enjoying our new 2021 Sorrento! The interior in our top spec model is fantastic and puts many so-called prestige brands to shame. The 2.5 turbo 4 is much punchier than the V6 in the prior model and the DCT transmission shifts almost imperceptibly. I haven't experienced any of the low-speed lurching reported by some reviewers. My wife loves the size of the Sorrento and for our family of four, it's nearly perfectly proportioned. We only occasionally use the third-row seats, but they're handy when we do need them and roomy enough for kids and smaller adults. The second-row captain's chairs make access easier than the prior model too. I do have a couple of criticisms, though. The ride is better than the prior model, but some might find it too firm. Also, Kia made some strange equipment omissions on US cars, even on this top-of-the-line model. Most notably, there are no memory seats and no heated rear seats. Overall, though, we're really happy with our purchase!

  4. Tremayne Ernser 2025-04-08

I read all negative reviews and don't understand what's going on. I have had my Kia Sorento S model since December 2020 and have had absolutely no issues, except for some small, minor complaints like the side windows not folding automatically and no automatic tailgate operating function. Besides all of this, this is a great car with beautiful design and innovative technologies. I definitely recommend this car for consideration.

  5. Ismael Tromp 2025-03-05

You'll definitely want to order the All Wheel Drive! Check out the reviews on YouTube - it's got too much torque for just front wheel drive. The AWD is awesome and a must-have. I've owned it for about 8 weeks (1500 miles) and had a wind noise on the passenger side which was corrected with a new door seal. It's really fun to drive and the various drive settings make it even more comfortable or sporty depending on your mood. I must say, for a top-of-the-line X Drive, it is missing the HomeLink garage door opener and the seat adjustment with coordinated mirror adjustment - those are my only disappointments. The baseball glove leather and green exterior are eye-catching. I have a message for Kia - you've definitely upped the brand (I also own a Telluride SX), now you just need to up the buying and service experience. I feel like I bought Mercedes quality with the buying and service experience of a Yugo dealership. There's lots of room for improvement to bring the brand up further.
