2021 Kia Sorento problems

The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Negative 2021 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Deondre Lesch 2025-04-12

I strongly advise against purchasing a Kia based on my personal experience. Despite purchasing a brand new 2021 Kia Sorento S, I experienced persistent issues with the brakes and transmission. Despite multiple attempts to fix the issues, they persisted and ultimately led me to return the car to the dealership. As a busy mother and full-time worker, I simply cannot afford the time and inconvenience of frequent car servicing. I have opened a case with Kia consumer affairs and am pursuing a buyback. It is unacceptable to encounter such issues with a new car purchase.I am confident that I have been patient and understanding, but now I am frustrated. I will not be purchasing another Kia.

  2. Payton Greenfelder 2025-04-06

We have owned two Sorentos in the past. Unfortunately, our 2018 Sorento required a new engine after only 60,000 miles. Hoping that these issues had been remedied, we made the mistake of trading it in for a 2021 Sorento. However, after less than a year and only 15,000 miles, the vehicle is now at the dealer in need of a new transmission. While the dealer does not have loaners available, they are paying for a base rental, although it is not a comparable vehicle. Despite the fact that the warranty does not cover car rental, KIA Corporate has informed us that the dealer is offering a good deal. They have also indicated that they may reimburse our monthly car payment, which we still have to pay. We recommend conducting thorough research and relying on information from independent reviewers before making a purchase. While KIA vehicles may look nice, they have proven to be unreliable. It is worth noting that several YouTube contributors have identified KIA engines as having terrible reliability, and there are class action lawsuits dating back to 2010 models. It appears that KIA has not learned from their mistakes. Please help us spread the word.

  3. Braden Crooks 2025-03-23

In January 2021, I traded in my Audi for the 2021 Kia Sorento SX. I was really impressed with the car at first. However, in July 2021, I turned on the car to drive home and the check engine light came on. At first, I thought it was just a fluke, especially since it was downpouring that night. But as I tried to accelerate, I noticed that the RPMs were going up but the speed wasn't increasing. It even jolted me forward at one point. The next day, the same thing happened and the car wasn't accelerating properly. I also noticed that the 'auto on off' feature was causing the car to die at red lights. When I finally got the car to Kia, they told me that I needed a new transmission. A brand new car with only 5000 miles on it and I needed a new transmission! The car has been sitting at the Kia dealership for 26 days now and they still don't have an ETA on when the new part will arrive. I'm really disappointed with this car and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I'll be submitting paperwork for it to be taken in as a lemon law and get a refund to get something else. I hope this helps others avoid the same experience.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that you've had some trouble with your SX Prestige, but we appreciate your honest feedback. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the sporty and unique styling, as well as the power and features of the vehicle. We understand that the transmission issue and interior rattling have been frustrating, and we hope that Kia will be able to resolve these issues for you. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to assist you further. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us!

  5. Geoffrey Gorczany 2025-02-20

Although I experienced some issues with my brand new Sorento X-Line Prestige, I am confident in my assessment that the reliability of the DCT transmission in Kias and Hyundais is not up to par. It is important to note that this model is built in the USA and may not have the same level of quality as those built in Korea. However, I have had positive experiences with other Kias in the past, including Stingers. I would recommend considering a Telluride or a Sportage if you are in the market for an SUV. Thank you for your attention.

Positive 2021 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Elliott Mueller 2025-04-24

I'm really enjoying our new 2021 Sorrento! The interior in our top spec model is fantastic and puts many so-called prestige brands to shame. The 2.5 turbo 4 is much punchier than the V6 in the prior model and the DCT transmission shifts almost imperceptibly. I haven't experienced any of the low-speed lurching reported by some reviewers. My wife loves the size of the Sorrento and for our family of four, it's nearly perfectly proportioned. We only occasionally use the third-row seats, but they're handy when we do need them and roomy enough for kids and smaller adults. The second-row captain's chairs make access easier than the prior model too. I do have a couple of criticisms, though. The ride is better than the prior model, but some might find it too firm. Also, Kia made some strange equipment omissions on US cars, even on this top-of-the-line model. Most notably, there are no memory seats and no heated rear seats. Overall, though, we're really happy with our purchase!

  2. Tremayne Ernser 2025-04-08

I read all negative reviews and don't understand what's going on. I have had my Kia Sorento S model since December 2020 and have had absolutely no issues, except for some small, minor complaints like the side windows not folding automatically and no automatic tailgate operating function. Besides all of this, this is a great car with beautiful design and innovative technologies. I definitely recommend this car for consideration.

  3. Ismael Tromp 2025-03-05

You'll definitely want to order the All Wheel Drive! Check out the reviews on YouTube - it's got too much torque for just front wheel drive. The AWD is awesome and a must-have. I've owned it for about 8 weeks (1500 miles) and had a wind noise on the passenger side which was corrected with a new door seal. It's really fun to drive and the various drive settings make it even more comfortable or sporty depending on your mood. I must say, for a top-of-the-line X Drive, it is missing the HomeLink garage door opener and the seat adjustment with coordinated mirror adjustment - those are my only disappointments. The baseball glove leather and green exterior are eye-catching. I have a message for Kia - you've definitely upped the brand (I also own a Telluride SX), now you just need to up the buying and service experience. I feel like I bought Mercedes quality with the buying and service experience of a Yugo dealership. There's lots of room for improvement to bring the brand up further.

  4. Sage Schulist 2025-02-21

Great handling, although a bit noisy due to the cross contact lx continental tires. The car hesitates a bit in eco mode, but not in sport. Sometimes the auto shutoff feature causes sluggish takeoff. It's disappointing that the tires wore out after only 47,000 km. The seats are not the most comfortable for long trips, and general maintenance items are very expensive, such as a $2700 windshield, $2500 per headlamp, and brakes costing approximately $1600. All of these expenses are required within the first 100,000 km.

  5. Emil Crist 2025-02-14

I recently purchased the 2021 Kia Sorento SX Prestige X-Line on Christmas Eve and I must say, the ride is incredibly smooth and the horsepower is excellent! Although, I can't help but feel that I downgraded in some ways compared to my previous vehicle, a 2016 Kia Sorento SXL 2.0 Turbo. However, I still enjoy my 2021 Sorento and it's great. I just miss some of the features that my 16' Sorento had, such as driver memory seats, heated rear seats, and rear window shades. I like my passengers to be comfortable as well, but I understand that not all features can be included in every model. Despite this, my SX Prestige still has a lot of technological features that were absent on my older Sorento, and the panoramic sunroof is a great addition. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and my SX Prestige is truly spoiling me!
