2012 Kia Optima problems
The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Started an hour and a half drive to visit family and I started hearing a weird sound almost like plastic was flapping around on the bottom. Turned down the music and it was only making this weird sound every 5-10 seconds. Pulled off of the road shut the car off and checked under the hood, the oil everything seemed fine. Started it up and heard the sound again and suddenly became worse and came to the conclusion it’s a rod knock. Had to get off the busy road so continues for maybe 1 mile and every dash light came on shut it off waited for a trailer, once we got it on the trailer the lights were gone. The dealership near me is saying they can’t do anything due to a recall update not being done but I had a newly programmed ECU that was put in in March of 2023 and I was some research and i found a few things stating the ECU would be completely up to date but kia is fighting me on it. I have also been update to date on maintenance records. Since its been at the dealership I’ve asked for the other 2 recalls that are open on it to be done while I figure out what to do with it and they bypass me asking everytime.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
- VIN: KNAGM4A70C5
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Kia sent out a safety recall notice (23V652). The letter clearly states the remedy is now available for my vehicle; that an engine compartment fire while parked or driving is the primary risk of the default; and that the recall service will take approximately 1-2 hours. I called two dealerships. Both said Kia won't send them the parts until an inspection has occurred - potentially resulting in requiring two different appointments prior to this safety recall being addressed - contrary to the verbatim language in the safety recall. I called Kia's customer service line and they confirmed that although the letter is written as described above, they won't provide parts to service centers until an inspection has been performed. I filed a complaint with them but know it won't matter unless someone with more authority gets involved. Considering this is a genuine life-safety issue - with the risk being a fire to the engine compartment - and the language in the recall notice - that the remedy is now available and the service will take 1-2 hours (no implication of multiple visits/appointments) - I think this is absolutely unacceptable. Someone needs to ensure Kia prioritizes human lives above cost when it comes to safety recalls.

The component was inspected by a mechanic, and there were no symptoms prior to the car stopping.
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
- VIN: 5XXGR4A61CG

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-16
- VIN: 5XXGR4A64CG
- Components: STRUCTURE,ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle has not repaired. I have not been in an accident. However there are two open safety recalls for my car and I am terrified that myself or someone else is going to be injured or even killed due to this problem has yet to be resolved. The first recall for my car is the headliner plates. I took my car into my local dealership (Stokes Kia of Goose Creek) and they told me it would take 10 business days before they could inspect my car and determine what the problem is (it’s a recall so I don’t understand why they would have to identify a problem that was clear in recall letter). However, I asked if they would repair my car within that 10 day period if they “identified” the problem. They told me it could take an additional 10 business days or longer for the repair (for them to get around to fix it because they were extremely backed up). I asked if I would be provided a loaner vehicle or rental and they told me no. They instructed to try the other Kia dealership which is much further away from me. I ended up trying the other Kia dealership. However, they told me they would not provide a loaner car but they did schedule an appointment for my repair. They told me it should not take long for the repair but they could have my car for about 3 days until they can get around to fixing it. I went along because I wanted the issue fixed so I prepared to make arrangements for the possibility that I wouldn’t have a car for 3 days. However, like the day or so before my appointment Kia Country called me saying that the parts for the repair were on a national back order and that I would be notified when they are available. I have yet to notified. Now there is another serious recall that there is no remedy for. I am extremely uncomfortable with my car with these recalls that can’t be fixed. This is not my fault so I shouldn’t have to suffer or be without a car due to these problems. I want to know what other options do I have?

Additionally, the vehicle stalled and failed to restart. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact exited the vehicle. The contact stated that there were flames coming from underneath the hood. The fire department extinguished the fire but declined to provide a copy of the report to the contact. No police report was filed. There were no injuries sustained. The vehicle was pushed into a parking lot. The vehicle was then howled to the residence the following day. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 23V652000(Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and 17V224000(Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent a field inspector, who inspected the vehicle at the residence. The field inspector informed the contact that a complete inspection of the vehicle could not be performed because the vehicle was not lifted. The contact stated that the inspector mainly inspected under the hood of the vehicle and took photos. The manufacturer later informed the contact that the vehicle repair could not be covered because the incident had not occurred due to the recalls based on the field inspector report. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 222,100.

This car is fantastic! After experiencing some frustrating repairs on my 2009 Honda Accord EX-L, I decided to trade it in for a brand new 2012 Kia Optima EX with Tech and Prem packages. I must say, the Kia Optima is a significant upgrade from the Accord and an absolute joy to drive. I've already driven 3k miles in just one month because it's so addictive to drive, and it turns heads wherever I go. People are always surprised when they find out it's a KIA! I highly recommend this car, and don't let the fact that it's a KIA put you off. The brand has made some incredible changes, and it definitely shows. Although I've owned three Hondas in the past, I won't be going back after experiencing the Kia Optima.

After months of research and driving my friends and family crazy with car talk, I finally decided to buy the 2012 Kia Optima EX-Turbo in Snow White Pearl with the Premium package. I've owned this car for 4 months now and taken it on a couple of long distance trips. I am so happy with my purchase!
-
I bought the car new in 2012. It drives nicely and gets good gas mileage, but it can be a little noisy and the trunk is sometimes difficult to shut. After 4 years, the driver's seat is starting to feel the springs. It's important to keep up with maintenance and know your manual to keep the engine and transmission in good shape. So far, I've driven 74,000 miles and have only needed maintenance, no repairs.

Congratulations on your wife's new car! It sounds like she made a great choice with the Satin Metal SX w/tour and tech pkgs. and trimmings. She test drove both the 2.4 EX and the 2.0T SX and preferred the latter, which is impressive. The SX with the Sport tuned suspension feels more refined and the 2.0T has amazing torque from 1250rpm with no lag. Wow! It's still early days, but I'm sure your wife will enjoy driving it for years to come. With an average of 28 mpg, it's also a great value for money. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I've been driving my used car for almost three months now and I must say, I'm absolutely in love with it! My daily commute is almost 70 miles round trip and I'm getting an impressive 36-38 hwy mpg (32 mpg overall). For those who claim to get lower mileage, I highly recommend pressing the

I recently purchased a car, but unfortunately, I have had to replace many parts. I have gone through four sets of tires, and despite the dealership's assurance that there is nothing wrong with the car, it continues to wear out tires quickly. While the warranty is helpful, it can be inconvenient to constantly bring the car in for repairs. I had a negative experience with Regal Kia Lakeland FL service department, and as a result, I cannot recommend Kia. I have reviewed them several times, but unfortunately, I never received a call from the dealership or KIA. It would be great if they could follow up with their customers after a review.

The 2012 Optima EX I purchased in February of that year came fully loaded. However, I did notice some issues with the car soon after buying it. The leg room was quite tight, and the seats were molded sharply and felt hard. Additionally, the transmission failed at only 13,000 miles. More recently, I have noticed some steering issues while driving on the freeway. The car tends to drift right or left, and there is a noticeable 'catch' in the electronic steering. A quick search online reveals that many others have experienced this problem as well. Furthermore, the real-world MPG falls short of the advertised figures. Despite its attractive appearance and numerous features, I would advise potential buyers to exercise caution.

I wanted to share my experience with my Kia Optima 2012 EX. Unfortunately, after only 32k miles with light use and daily garage parking, the interior and exterior are starting to show some wear. The armrest is peeling, the carpet on the rear deck is discolouring, and the 'leather' seats are starting to break down. The mileage has not improved and is still averaging around 23mpg C-H driving. Additionally, the tires that Kia equipped the Optima with are not great, so it's important to have the alignment checked regularly. While we have had some issues with this car, it's not a horrible car overall, and we are glad that it's a lease. We recently traded it in and got a few hundred towards a new lease of an Accord EX Coupe. If you're considering buying, I would advise against it. However, if you're planning on leasing, just be aware that the Nexxen tires may not last. Thank you for reading!

The Kia Optima has had some issues with its engine and transmission, as well as some wiring problems that have caused the brake system to fail. While there is a warranty, it seems that Kia has not always been forthcoming in honoring it, as evidenced by some negative reviews. It is important for Kia to address these issues and take responsibility for their products. Hopefully, they will take steps to improve the quality of their cars and ensure the safety of their customers.

My 2012 Optima LX was purchased brand new and was well-maintained with regular oil changes. Despite being primarily used for highway commuting, the engine suddenly began knocking and squealing before ultimately failing. Upon inspection by KIA, it was determined that the engine requires replacement. While I am disappointed that the 100,000 mile warranty has expired, I am confident in my decision to have the engine replaced. Although the cost of approximately $7,000 is significant, I am willing to invest in the repair to restore my beloved car to its former glory. I have thoroughly researched the issue and am reassured that this is not a common occurrence. I remain a loyal KIA customer and look forward to many more years of driving satisfaction.
