Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems
The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.
Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.
The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.
The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.
The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.
In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.
What is the most common problem with Kia Optima?

Is the Kia Optima a reliable car?
The Kia Optima Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 8th out of 24 for midsize cars. The average annual repair cost is $471 which means it has lower than average ownership costs. The severity of repairs is average and the frequency of those issues is low, so major repairs are uncommon for the Optima.
What year was bad for Kia Optima?
Kia Optima Years to Avoid: 2011
There were enough issues and pressure from consumers with widespread criticism that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Kia. Eventually, the carmaker recalled the 2011-2014 Optimas with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, among other cars.
Why are Kia Optimas so cheap?
The materials used are lower in quality than other manufacturers, but Kia is quite smart when it comes to production. Some of the cheaper plastics are used sparingly, so many of Kia's interiors look and feel fancy – but they still managed to save on production costs and pass the savings to the customers.

The vehicle was imported to the UAE, and the recall was not addressed by the previous owner. As a result, I am now facing significant safety issues. Since taking ownership, I have encountered multiple engine problems, including sudden power loss, severe vibrations, and abnormal behavior from the throttle. Given these circumstances, I am requesting assistance from the NHTSA in resolving this recall issue and guidance on how to proceed with the necessary repairs while the vehicle is registered under my name in the UAE. I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 2014 LX. I was pleasantly surprised by the car's quality, especially considering its price point. The ride was smooth and quiet, and the 4 cyl engine provided plenty of power while still maintaining great gas mileage. The warranty was also a nice bonus. Overall, I was very impressed with this beautiful car. It's been a few years since I owned it, but I still remember it fondly. In fact, I would say it was even better than my wife's BMW, which was twice the price! I hope this helps if you're considering a Kia. For what it's worth, I now drive a 2018 Toyota Camry SE, which has even more features and advanced safety equipment as standard.

This is the best car I've personally owned, but unfortunately, I've had to spend $1500 in the past 4 months, not counting regular maintenance. The parts were not as cheap as I had expected, so I will be looking for a Honda next time.

I've had my Optima ex turbo for a week now and have already driven 425 miles, both in the city and on the highway. The car is impressively solid and quiet, with a great combination of ride and handling. The seats are very comfortable both in the front and rear, and the Infinity stereo produces fantastic sound. The controls are also very user-friendly. So far, I've been getting an overall mix of 27-28 mpg for gas mileage. I can't express enough how much I adore this car! The only downside is the choice of tires - Nexens are not ideal for wet roads. Hopefully, Kia will recognize that a car as excellent as the Optima deserves better performing tires.

I had never really considered a Kia before, but I was looking for a more 'grown up' car after having a Scion XB for 8 years that I loved. I started asking people I knew who had purchased new Kias what they thought, and 100% said they'd buy a Kia again when they looked for a new car. At first, I thought I'd just get an LX because I could buy it outright, but then I drove the EX. It was so comfortable and beautiful, and had literally more interior features than I had on the Lexus LS I had years ago. The sunroof is amazing, all of the dash instruments are easy to use and in logical places, and easy to get to. My last car made a horrible wobbling wind sound when I had a window open or cracked on the freeway, but this doesn't do that. I adore the heated seats and steering wheel, and the tushy cooler is AWESOME. I also love that it knows I'm close and opens the mirrors and unlocks when I touch the handle. I have only one complaint so far after having this car for 7 months: if it's been raining and I open the trunk, the way it's designed allows the water to run off into the trunk, which I find odd. For the price and warranty, I honestly can't imagine a better car. My sister bought something the same year and paid way more, but it has less features!

After 10 months and almost 9,000 miles, this car just keeps getting better! It's quick, stylish, and an absolute joy to drive.

I bought this car 'used' with only 1,000+- miles on it. Unfortunately, within the third year of ownership and out of warranty, I have had to put almost $2,000 into simply keeping it running. Additionally, I have had to replace both headlights about every six weeks. Now, I have been informed that the A/C pump is bad and it's going to take another $400-$600 to repair. It's quite frustrating! Kia Customer Relations and dealers have not been able to help me. I am disappointed and will not be buying a KIA again. I would advise buyers to be cautious and not fall victim to a company that won't support its own vehicle. It's a shame because this car is overrated. By the way, my insurance is much higher because of the inadequate safety of the car. Thank you for reading!

I bought this car with 160 miles on it. Now, it has 48,000 miles and I haven't had a single problem. While it may not be the most exciting car to drive and the interior may lack some features, it's important to remember that you get what you pay for. However, when it comes to reliability and affordability, you can't beat it. In almost 50,000 miles, I haven't experienced a single hiccup. It also gets great gas mileage. I have complete confidence that when I put the key in the ignition, it will start without fail. The reason I chose a Kia is simple: I needed a car that would last a long time without breaking the bank, and I found that in my Kia. In fact, my next car will also be a Kia.

Buying from a used car lot can be a bit of a gamble, as you never quite know what you're going to get. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with my purchase. The previous owner had not done any maintenance on the car, which led to a lot of unexpected expenses. However, I found that the Kia service department was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Although my regular mechanic was unable to solve a problem with the car's idling and reverse chugging, the Kia team was able to diagnose and fix the issue. I did have an issue with the passenger side-impact airbag, which would have been expensive to fix, but I decided to go without it. Overall, it was a bit of a bumpy road, but I'm grateful for the support I received from the Kia team.

Hello! It's been almost 5 years and the car has only been driven for 34k miles. Overall, the car has been good, but there is a concerning issue with rust. If you live in a state like Ohio where salt is used on the roads, I would advise against buying this car. Unfortunately, the 2004 and earlier Optima models have a significant underbody rust problem, including the subframe. Some of the metal brake disc shields have already rusted off, and most of the hardware in the rear, such as hose clamps, is almost gone. It's important to note that none of this is covered under the warranty. While the drivetrain may last for 10 years, much of the underneath may not be there. Thank you for considering this information before making your decision.

I purchased my 2015 Kia Optima brand new from the Pomona dealership in October 2014. Currently, my car has about 47,500 miles on it and is less than 2 years old. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with my car such as a knocking noise when accelerating, white smoke out of the tailpipe, and the check engine light coming on. I took my car to a Kia dealership and had it towed there. Despite keeping up with routine oil changes and maintenance, I was disappointed to find out that there were multiple complaints with newer KIAs regarding the same issues. I am hoping that my engine will be covered under warranty, unlike many of the complaints and class action lawsuits I read online. I also spoke with my neighbor who has a Kia Optima with the same issues. She mentioned that her car is making a loud knocking noise. I have also received comments from numerous friends on Facebook who complain of the same issue. The dealership says it's oil sludge, but I took care of my car like I should have and am now stuck in a hardship both financially and physically. This is especially stressful for me since I have previously owned or leased 5 other cars before this with absolutely no mechanical problems. My previous car was a Toyota Camry with over 100k miles on it and ran perfectly when I sold it to buy a new Kia. I maintained it the same way I have maintained my Kia and the other cars I’ve had (Lexus, Nissan, Honda). This is the first time I’ve ever had a major issue with a car I’ve owned, and it was bought brand new (unlike some of my other previous cars). In speaking with a few different mechanics and friends who know a lot about cars, this seems to be a KIA engine issue, and they know of no cars that get oil sludge being this new and even cars who have gone without oil changes for 15k+ miles. I would advise against buying a KIA. Thank you for reading my experience.
