Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems
The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.
Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.
The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.
The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.
The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.
In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.

The Kia Optima Reliability Rating is 4.0 out of 5.0, which ranks it 8th out of 24 for midsize cars. The average annual repair cost is $471 which means it has lower than average ownership costs. The severity of repairs is average and the frequency of those issues is low, so major repairs are uncommon for the Optima.
What year was bad for Kia Optima?
Kia Optima Years to Avoid: 2011
There were enough issues and pressure from consumers with widespread criticism that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Kia. Eventually, the carmaker recalled the 2011-2014 Optimas with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, among other cars.
Why are Kia Optimas so cheap?
The materials used are lower in quality than other manufacturers, but Kia is quite smart when it comes to production. Some of the cheaper plastics are used sparingly, so many of Kia's interiors look and feel fancy – but they still managed to save on production costs and pass the savings to the customers.

- Summary: Complaint Summary: I am the current owner of a 2014 Kia Optima, which is affected by recall 23V652 related to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The vehicle was imported to the UAE, and the recall was not addressed by the previous owner. As a result, I am now facing significant safety issues. Since taking ownership, I have encountered multiple engine problems, including sudden power loss, severe vibrations, and abnormal behavior from the throttle. These symptoms align with the issues outlined in the recall notice, indicating that the vehicle may pose a safety risk to me and other road users. It was only recently that I discovered the recall information online, which has heightened my concern regarding the safety of my vehicle and the potential for further complications. Given these circumstances, I am requesting assistance from the NHTSA in resolving this recall issue and guidance on how to proceed with the necessary repairs while the vehicle is registered under my name in the UAE. It is crucial for me to ensure the safety of my vehicle for my own protection and for the safety of others on the road. I hope you're doing well! I remember telling my wife that this car was the best value for the money when she bought it. The only issue we've had is that it hasn't held its trade-in value as well as we'd hoped. However, we've been trying to find a reason to dislike this car, but we just can't! The fit and finish are great, and everything else is just good. There's nothing poor, but there's also nothing outstanding.

I've owned several Audis and VWs in the past, but when I saw the Optima's stylish design, both inside and out, I was immediately impressed. It wasn't until later that I discovered it was actually designed by a former Audi chief designer. Interestingly, the Optima is a European-styled version of the Hyundai Sonata, with which it shares many parts. This formula is similar to Acura's TSX, which is sold in Europe as the Honda Accord. The fit and finish of the Optima are excellent, and it's styled like an Audi, but built like an Accord. The interior is much nicer than that of a Camry. With a 200hp 4-cylinder engine, the Optima has more than enough power for a 3300lb car. Although it has head-turning lines, it's important to note that this is not an Autobahn cruiser, but rather a conventional midsize sedan. Nonetheless, it's a very pleasant car to spend time in.

I recently purchased a car and took it on a road trip from Phoenix to Las Vegas in July. The air conditioned seats were a lifesaver during the hot weather. The gas mileage was exactly as advertised, with around 35-38 miles per gallon in town. Unlike my previous Prius, the KIA has a different transmission that handles power in a way that I prefer. I find the CVT to be unpleasant, so this change is a positive one in my opinion. The ride is excellent on the highway and good in town. After test driving the Fusion and Sonata, I ultimately chose this car. The Sonatas I drove pulled to the right, while the ergonomics for the AC controls in the Fusion were poorly designed. Additionally, the exterior of the Fusion looks like a streamlined YUGO, which is not my style.

Congratulations on your purchase of the Kia Optima 2003! It's amazing how much you get for the price, and your car sounds like it has everything you need. Even though you don't need heated seats in Texas, it's great to have all the other features that make your driving experience comfortable and enjoyable. It's understandable that you were initially unfamiliar with the Optima, but after driving it yourself, you fell in love with it. The Kia warranty also provides peace of mind and security in your decision. It's wonderful to hear that you've already put 4,200 miles on your car in just 8 weeks and are enjoying it so much!

Great Car! Bought it Oct. 11, 2010. Haven't had any problems with the car. It's the first 5 speed I've owned and I love it. It's pretty quick and fast, I can downshift to third and pass cars with no problem. I once had a loaded car (at least 800ibs extra weight), driving up steep hills and still got 25MPG. I feel I got a lot for what I paid, just a little over 12,000.

We have owned this car since it was new and it has been trouble-free until it was out of the manufacturer's warranty. While driving at approximately 55mph, the vehicle went into 'limp mode' and displayed a message on the dashboard instructing us to 'pull over and safely exit the vehicle'. When I tried to put it in drive, it made a very hard jump and would not accelerate. After contacting Kia, we were disappointed to learn that there was no roadside assistance available because our car was out of warranty. Thankfully, we were able to load the vehicle onto my parents' flatbed and haul it to the dealership where it was purchased in Ocala, FL (we were in Jax, FL and insurance wouldn't transport it that far). We were grateful to have the extended warranty because the car needed a new transmission and electric motor, which took over two weeks to repair while the dealership was 'waiting to hear back from Korea, because we've never seen this problem before'. If we hadn't had the extended warranty, the cost of the repairs would have been astronomical. In addition to the transmission and electric motor issues, the buttons to change the station on the steering wheel do not work properly, and the steering wheel itself is peeling apart. The front air dam fell off while driving down the road, which Kia attributed to my wife's parking skills, but I believe it was never installed properly. The steering wheel makes a clicking noise if you barely turn it while the vehicle is stopped, which is concerning. Although the fit and finish are decent, the car does not live up to its price tag or its estimated fuel economy. We plan to trade it in for $1,500 when our warranty expires at 100k and put that towards a Honda.

I love this car, despite the battery dying one month after the warranty expired and the fuel pump going out. Fortunately, I was able to get it to the shop before being stranded and it is still under warranty. It can achieve 31-33 mpg if kept at 80 or under on the freeway, and around 22 mpg in the city.

I purchased my 2007 Kia Optima brand new and initially enjoyed its performance. However, after 18 months of use, I experienced several mechanical issues, including a failed automatic transmission at 60,076 miles which left me stranded in the Arizona desert. Additionally, the starter failed soon after and the engine required replacement just before reaching 65,000 miles. Unfortunately, the car has poor resale value and below average fuel efficiency, achieving only 23 MPG on the highway and 17 MPG in the city.

I recently purchased a 2013 brand new KIA Optima LX (4cyl) at Cobb County KIA in Kennesaw, GA. The salesman suggested that I should give their credit manager an opportunity to see if he could beat my current financing rate. Although I came in with my own financing, I appreciated the suggestion and decided to give it a try. However, the process took longer than expected and I regretted my decision. After almost walking away from the deal, we finally got the paperwork signed. I was frustrated with how they do business. About a year later, I had a flat tire while driving down the highway. I was surprised to find that there was no spare tire in the trunk, only a little box containing a small air compressor and a can of They took back the car and after about an hour and a half, they called me up to tell me that the bad fuel sensor was included as part of a recall and therefore there would be no charge. Finally, some good news! They drove it around front for me. While I was waiting, the mechanic came back and said the engine light came on again and they needed to check it out. After another hour of waiting, he came out to tell me that another fuel sensor/GDI pump was bad, but unfortunately, it was not covered by a recall or warranty. I was frustrated to hear that it would cost $1,067, especially since my car was less than 3 years old and still under the 100k warranty with only 79k miles. Unfortunately, I couldn't go anywhere else since KIA has a stranglehold on their parts. This experience was the final straw for me. I have decided to never own another KIA product and I will tell everyone I know not to purchase one either.

If you are considering purchasing a used or new Kia, it is important to be aware of potential engine issues. It may be helpful to research Kia engine recalls and to keep an eye on oil levels. While some customers have reported issues with their Kia engines, it is important to note that every car is different and experiences may vary. It is always a good idea to do your own research and make an informed decision based on your individual needs and preferences.
