Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.

First generation (MS; 2000)

From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.

In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems

The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.

Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.

The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.

The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.

The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.

In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.

What year was bad for Kia Optima?

Kia Optima Years to Avoid: 2011

There were enough issues and pressure from consumers with widespread criticism that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Kia. Eventually, the carmaker recalled the 2011-2014 Optimas with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, among other cars.

Why are Kia Optimas so cheap?

The materials used are lower in quality than other manufacturers, but Kia is quite smart when it comes to production. Some of the cheaper plastics are used sparingly, so many of Kia's interiors look and feel fancy – but they still managed to save on production costs and pass the savings to the customers.

  • Summary: Complaint Summary: I am the current owner of a 2014 Kia Optima, which is affected by recall 23V652 related to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The vehicle was imported to the UAE, and the recall was not addressed by the previous owner. As a result, I am now facing significant safety issues. Since taking ownership, I have encountered multiple engine problems, including sudden power loss, severe vibrations, and abnormal behavior from the throttle. These symptoms align with the issues outlined in the recall notice, indicating that the vehicle may pose a safety risk to me and other road users. It was only recently that I discovered the recall information online, which has heightened my concern regarding the safety of my vehicle and the potential for further complications. Given these circumstances, I am requesting assistance from the NHTSA in resolving this recall issue and guidance on how to proceed with the necessary repairs while the vehicle is registered under my name in the UAE. It is crucial for me to ensure the safety of my vehicle for my own protection and for the safety of others on the road. I appreciate your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to any support you can provide. Please let me know if further information or documentation is needed Thanks alot

Latest negative Kia Optima car reviews

  1. Tad Bergstrom 2025-07-12

    Vehicle year: 2019

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a recent experience I had with my Kia Optima 2019. As an Uber driver, I take great care of my car and recently had new brake and transmission oil put in. However, while driving up a hill, the engine lights started blinking and my speed was reduced. I took it to several mechanics, but no one could pinpoint the exact problem. After some research, I found out that there was a recall on previous year's models for the same issue, but unfortunately, my car isn't covered under warranty anymore since I've driven 115,000 km. It's definitely a bummer since this is my business car, and I've invested a lot of money into it, including making it sporty with red leather seats. I'm currently waiting to see what the next steps are, but I'm hopeful that it can be fixed. Thanks for listening!

  2. Bradley Lesch 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2014

I purchased my car as a certified used vehicle, and it was in impeccable condition with only 13k miles on it. I cherished it as it was the first car I bought entirely on my own at the age of 32. One day in May, I was driving to work on a mild day in New England, and I had opened the slider for my panoramic sunroof to let the sunshine in. While driving at approximately 50 mph, I heard a loud explosion and realized that pieces of glass were falling on me and inside my car. I quickly pulled over and saw a significant hole in my sunroof. I remembered reading about sunroofs spontaneously exploding, and unfortunately, it happened to me two weeks later. Despite the glass falling on me, I managed to drive to the nearest exit and call my husband using the call button on the steering wheel. I was afraid to move as I didn't know if a piece of glass had punctured me.I confidently exclaimed, 'I'm on exit 18 at the park and ride. Please hurry over as fast as possible. The sunroof just exploded on me and I'm covered in glass.' Despite leaving the showroom with the doors locked and the lights on, the technician arrived in under 15 minutes, which was impressive given that it should have taken 25 minutes. Upon exiting my car, I was covered in glass splinters and shards, and my car was in the same condition. The glass appeared to have exploded from the inside out, which was concerning. After contacting AAA, they drove my car over an hour away to the nearest Kia dealership. Long story short, I didn't get my car back for a whole month. The first Kia dealership tried to blame me, stating that I caused the damage myself or that someone threw something at my car. They even investigated the highway for any bumps or road construction, but found nothing. Eventually, they agreed to fix it for free, but refused to take responsibility for the damages to avoid being sued. I had to pay $50 per day for a rental car, which they still haven't reimbursed me for as promised. They replaced the glass, but then discovered issues with the track and had to wait for approval to replace it. They also informed me that I needed a new car battery, which I had to pay for. Despite repeatedly asking for updates, I was left in the dark and had to call them myself. I even asked them to vacuum the inside of the car to remove the small glass pieces, but they failed to do so. When I picked up my car, I was disappointed to find that the glass was still inside. It's now August, and I'm still waiting to be reimbursed. I've called a few times and left messages, but have yet to receive a response. I'm considering contacting a lawyer now, as I'm petrified to drive my car, especially around trucks. Additionally, there are scratches, grease stains, and an unpleasant odor inside and outside of my car.Kia must prioritize customer care, which appears to be lacking. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend them. As a result, I am considering trading in my car.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my KIA. I purchased it in late 2004 with only 3,000 miles on it and it was great! However, once the warranty expired, I did experience some issues. For example, the timing belt went at less than 70,000 miles, causing me to replace the whole engine in 2010. More recently, the car has been cutting out while I'm driving and I've had it in the KIA dealership repair shop for 3 months now. Unfortunately, they still haven't been able to identify the issue, but they're suggesting I spend $1200 to see if that will fix it. Overall, I loved my car during the first 5 years, but I do wish I had traded it in after 4 years. Thanks for listening!

I recently had an issue with my 2013 KIA, unfortunately the engine failed with just 43k miles. While it was a frustrating experience, I was able to find a local mechanic who was able to fix the car for a reasonable price and in a timely manner. Although I won't be purchasing a KIA again, I encourage everyone to do their research before making a purchase. It's important to note that KIA has a goodwill program, however, it may not always be accepted. Overall, I hope that KIA can improve their service departments to better serve their customers in the future.

The car is experiencing multiple issues, including burning oil, AC malfunction, a grinding noise when taking off on hills, and engine knocking. Despite the dealership being informed of these problems, no action has been taken thus far, even after seeking a second opinion.

I purchased this car in August 2017, opting for the EX trim. As a previous owner of both the 2012 and 2015 models, both of which were the baseline of the EX trim, I found that while this is a very nice car, I did lose a few features that I had previously enjoyed, such as fog lights, engine power, dual exhaust, and better sounding speakers. Additionally, the lit up cup holders and holders in the door were no longer present. However, as an owner in the last few weeks, I have grown to really appreciate this car. The EX base model boasts very comfortable seats with memory placement for two people, a newer dash, an improved air conditioner, and is quiet and smooth (as far as wind noise). While there is still some road noise, it is much improved from the previous model. The gas mileage is also much better, and the satellite radio is much easier to navigate. The glove department is also bigger. This car can be driven in three modes: economy, standard, and sports mode. I have found that there is a big difference in power when driving in sports mode compared to economy mode. While the power is not as much as in the older models, it is still enough. The older model had 195 horsepower, while this model has 185. One great thing about this car is that the oil changes are done at 7500 miles instead of 5000. Additionally, the side view mirrors fold and there are lights where the door handles are on the outside, which is a cool feature. Overall, this is a nice car. While I did lose some features that I loved, I have gained many new ones that I appreciate just as much.

Great road car! It has good power. Although, I did have some issues with wind noise on the driver's side window and had to replace the fuel sender twice. The check engine light came on twice, but it turned out to be due to not having the fuel cap tight. Overall, this is a well-performing car, especially if you do a lot of long-distance driving.

I'm so excited to share that I got an amazing deal on a new loaded 2002! The price and warranty couldn't be beat, and the dealer is like a small hometown dealer where everyone there remembers your name even over a month later. They took care of a small problem with lot damage to the bumper paint right away. I was so impressed that my daughter is buying one at the end of the month too! I did a lot of checking before I decided and I've only found one person who was really unhappy with his KIA, but he admits there is such a thing as a LEMON. Time will tell...........

I love this car! I used to own an Avalon, and I feel like I've stepped up! I love the V6 engine and the Sportronic transmission. And most importantly, I feel better because of the free 10-year warranty!

I've had my Optima SXL Turbo for almost 8 months now, and I must say, I absolutely love it! It has so many features and I just adore the way it drives and handles - it's amazing! Although the turbo lag can be a little inconsistent when you aren't used to the car, now that I know how it responds and when, it's great. If you had told me a few years back that I would be buying a Kia, I would have thought you were mistaken. However, I was drawn to the new design of the SXL and how sharp it looked, so I went for a few test drives and before I knew it, I didn't want any other car. Believe it or not, I've had so many friends who initially laughed at me, ask me if they can drive it, and have nothing bad to say when they're done. I'm so glad I got this car, and I think it would be very hard for me to ever purchase anything else.
