Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.

First generation (MS; 2000)

From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.

In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems

The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.

Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.

The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.

The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.

The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.

In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.

What year was bad for Kia Optima?

Kia Optima Years to Avoid: 2011

There were enough issues and pressure from consumers with widespread criticism that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Kia. Eventually, the carmaker recalled the 2011-2014 Optimas with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, among other cars.

Why are Kia Optimas so cheap?

The materials used are lower in quality than other manufacturers, but Kia is quite smart when it comes to production. Some of the cheaper plastics are used sparingly, so many of Kia's interiors look and feel fancy – but they still managed to save on production costs and pass the savings to the customers.

  • Summary: Complaint Summary: I am the current owner of a 2014 Kia Optima, which is affected by recall 23V652 related to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The vehicle was imported to the UAE, and the recall was not addressed by the previous owner. As a result, I am now facing significant safety issues. Since taking ownership, I have encountered multiple engine problems, including sudden power loss, severe vibrations, and abnormal behavior from the throttle. These symptoms align with the issues outlined in the recall notice, indicating that the vehicle may pose a safety risk to me and other road users. It was only recently that I discovered the recall information online, which has heightened my concern regarding the safety of my vehicle and the potential for further complications. Given these circumstances, I am requesting assistance from the NHTSA in resolving this recall issue and guidance on how to proceed with the necessary repairs while the vehicle is registered under my name in the UAE. It is crucial for me to ensure the safety of my vehicle for my own protection and for the safety of others on the road. I appreciate your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to any support you can provide. Please let me know if further information or documentation is needed Thanks alot

Latest negative Kia Optima car reviews

  1. Johan Okuneva 2025-05-03

    Vehicle year: 2019

I purchased this car brand new, and although it has experienced recurring issues with the knock sensor, I have taken decisive action to address the problem. Despite the occasional drop in speed, I have been able to maintain control of the vehicle and ensure my safety on the road. While there have been challenges, I remain confident in my ability to handle any situation that may arise.

  2. Edgardo Labadie 2025-04-26

    Vehicle year: 2014

Hi there! I wanted to let you know that there has been a recall on your engine. Unfortunately, it seems that it blew up with 70k+ miles on it. I hope you're doing okay and that we can help you get this sorted out as soon as possible.

  3. Orion VonRueden 2025-04-26

    Vehicle year: 2009

It's great to hear that you were able to find a mid-sized car that met your needs, and the Optima seemed like a good choice. Although you experienced some issues with the car after the warranty expired, it's understandable that these things can happen with any vehicle. It sounds like you made the best decision for your situation by selling the car. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Jamar Hammes 2025-04-20

    Vehicle year: 2002

My wife and I purchased two new Kias after learning about their excellent warranty. Unfortunately, our 2002 Optima required repairs for the clutch and flywheel, which will cost $1800. While the flywheel is covered under warranty, the clutch is considered a wearable item. However, it is unacceptable for a clutch to burn out after only 30K miles, even with the worst driver. The burned clutch also caused the failure of other parts such as the pressure plate and flywheel. Despite the unexpected issues, we have confidence in the quality of our Kia vehicles. We have had some minor issues such as the door moulding falling off, the check engine light turning on and off, and the driver side window requiring repairs twice. Additionally, the tires are already showing signs of wear. Overall, we remain confident in the reliability of our Kias and look forward to continued use of these vehicles.

We have owned this car since it was new and it has been trouble-free until it was out of the manufacturer's warranty. While driving at approximately 55mph, the vehicle went into 'limp mode' and displayed a message on the dashboard instructing us to 'pull over and safely exit the vehicle'. When I tried to put it in drive, it made a very hard jump and would not accelerate. After contacting Kia, we were disappointed to learn that there was no roadside assistance available because our car was out of warranty. Thankfully, we were able to load the vehicle onto my parents' flatbed and haul it to the dealership where it was purchased in Ocala, FL (we were in Jax, FL and insurance wouldn't transport it that far). We were grateful to have the extended warranty because the car needed a new transmission and electric motor, which took over two weeks to repair while the dealership was 'waiting to hear back from Korea, because we've never seen this problem before'. If we hadn't had the extended warranty, the cost of the repairs would have been astronomical. In addition to the transmission and electric motor issues, the buttons to change the station on the steering wheel do not work properly, and the steering wheel itself is peeling apart. The front air dam fell off while driving down the road, which Kia attributed to my wife's parking skills, but I believe it was never installed properly. The steering wheel makes a clicking noise if you barely turn it while the vehicle is stopped, which is concerning. Although the fit and finish are decent, the car does not live up to its price tag or its estimated fuel economy. We plan to trade it in for $1,500 when our warranty expires at 100k and put that towards a Honda.

Had to trade in my Rx-8 (worst car ever) and got this. I'm so happy with my new car!! It's great on gas and the price was very reasonable. I highly recommend it as a family car.

I'm a big fan of Kia! I purchased my first Kia, a 2011 model, in 2013 with 40,000 miles. I needed a fuel-efficient car due to changes in my life. I am now preparing to buy my second Kia because my first one has 290,000 miles on it and has only had one issue - the throttle body went out at 50,000 miles, but it was covered under warranty and fixed with no problem. As expected, the gas mileage decreased as the car got more miles, but I still managed to get 28 miles per gallon while driving at 75mph for the majority of those miles. If I kept my foot off the gas pedal, I could get 32 to 34 miles per gallon. Overall, it's a fantastic car!

I've owned several non-premium models of the ex series, including the 12, 15, 17, and 19. Overall, the 12-15 models were great cars, while the 17 was comfortable but slow. The 19, on the other hand, is a perfect combination of luxury and sportiness. During my test drive, I was amazed by the advanced technology it had, such as lane assist, blind spot detection, and reverse detection. As a big guy, I found the comfort level of the S model lacking, but the ex model was perfect. Compared to my 2017 model, the speed of the 19 was exhilarating, and I can now pass cars without shifting into low gear. Even after a week of owning it, I still love the car. However, as a consumer, I was unaware that I was getting a DCT transmission, which is not as smooth as a conventional transmission. Although some vehicles have had issues with this type of transmission, other manufacturers have had good luck with it over time. I have noticed the occasional jerk or shake at low speeds, but according to my research, this is normal. The DCT transmission is supposed to give me better gas mileage since it's a 7-speed and has more power thanks to the turbo. I love the power in the car, and for me, the ex model is the best. It has smaller 17-inch wheels for a more comfortable ride, while the 18-inch wheels are better for performance. The inside of the car looks awesome, and the technology is top-notch. As far as the DCT goes, it will take some time for me to figure out how I feel about it.On one hand, I absolutely love how quickly I can reach 40 to 50 mph, but on the other hand, I am sacrificing a bit of the comfort that comes with an old-fashioned transmission. It's not a major issue, but it is something that I need to learn more about and get used to. Overall, I would definitely recommend the car, but it's important to be aware of the transmission difference.

Ok so this is my second Kia and my second car. My first one was a 1998 Kia Sportage. This was a huge upgrade for me. I'm happy to report that I haven't experienced any problems just yet, other than the car sounding like it's having trouble starting. But once it does, it runs beautifully. I absolutely love my car - it's so nice and shiny!

In November 2022, after driving my Optima for 74,500km, I made the difficult decision to sell it. As a dog owner, I needed a small SUV to make travelling easier. However, if it weren't for that, I would have happily kept the Kia as my primary vehicle. The ownership experience was flawless, and I will miss it dearly. The only expenses I faced during ownership were routine maintenance, tires, and brakes. Every other year, I gave it an oil spray to keep it rust-free, and synthetic oil kept it running smoothly. The interior still looks as good as it did on day one, with no cracks or creases in the leather and no plastic buttons showing wear or flaking. Kia really outdid themselves with this design. I've always known that Korean car companies get a bad rap, but this car has made me a loyal H/K customer. It seems I'm not alone in my admiration for the Optima Turbo. I had hoped to get my hands on a 2023 Sportage next, but the wait time for the specs I wanted was going to be 9 months. Instead, I leased a CX5 Turbo, which is a great vehicle, but not as fun to drive as the Optima. If you're considering an Optima Turbo, I highly recommend it. In November 2020, I received a happy anniversary email from Kia, marking 5 years since I bought my SX. Although I've only driven it for 57,000kms since then, I have to sing its praises. This car has been 100% reliable, with only scheduled maintenance needed. I had it detailed last month for the first time as I was considering selling it, but in the end, I decided to keep it for a while longer. The only reason I would sell it is to get a minivan or wagon for cargo reasons. Kia made the AndroidAuto/AppleCarPlay upgrade free for 2015 models, and that has been a game changer. Cooled seats are now mandatory equipment on future cars, as this feature has spoiled me. I'm still on the original brakes, though I think it'll be time to change them in the next 5K.I'm also still on the original tires, although I rotate winter tires in, so that's pretty normal. I haven't experienced any squeaks or rattles, and I undercoat it biannually, which has been sufficient in preventing even a speck of rust. Despite living outdoors 24/7/365, the pearl white paint looks brand new. Today marks the expiration of the warranty, but I didn't need to use it even once. The car has only been in the shop once to have a recall issue addressed. I've used synthetic oil from the first oil change, and the engine seems as healthy as it was on day one. I would highly recommend buying this over a 2016 redesign model. It's better looking, and final model year cars always seem to have the benefit of any bugs being worked out in past model years.
