Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.

First generation (MS; 2000)

From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.

In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems

The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.

Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.

The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.

The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.

The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.

In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.

What year was bad for Kia Optima?

Kia Optima Years to Avoid: 2011

There were enough issues and pressure from consumers with widespread criticism that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Kia. Eventually, the carmaker recalled the 2011-2014 Optimas with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, among other cars.

Why are Kia Optimas so cheap?

The materials used are lower in quality than other manufacturers, but Kia is quite smart when it comes to production. Some of the cheaper plastics are used sparingly, so many of Kia's interiors look and feel fancy – but they still managed to save on production costs and pass the savings to the customers.

  • Summary: Complaint Summary: I am the current owner of a 2014 Kia Optima, which is affected by recall 23V652 related to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The vehicle was imported to the UAE, and the recall was not addressed by the previous owner. As a result, I am now facing significant safety issues. Since taking ownership, I have encountered multiple engine problems, including sudden power loss, severe vibrations, and abnormal behavior from the throttle. These symptoms align with the issues outlined in the recall notice, indicating that the vehicle may pose a safety risk to me and other road users. Despite my efforts to diagnose the problems, I have already incurred costs exceeding 13 AED on various repairs and diagnostic services, all while being unaware of the existing recall. It was only recently that I discovered the recall information online, which has heightened my concern regarding the safety of my vehicle and the potential for further complications. Given these circumstances, I am requesting assistance from the NHTSA in resolving this recall issue and guidance on how to proceed with the necessary repairs while the vehicle is registered under my name in the UAE. It is crucial for me to ensure the safety of my vehicle for my own protection and for the safety of others on the road. I appreciate your attention to this urgent matter and look forward to any support you can provide. Please let me know if further information or documentation is needed Thanks alot

Latest negative Kia Optima car reviews

  1. Brando McGlynn 2025-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2006

Our experience with the car we bought in Feb. 2007 to replace our 2000 Kia Sephia was not a positive one. Unfortunately, we encountered a series of major issues over the 3 years we had it. Despite having to replace the compressor for the AC and the crank shaft pulley, which in turn caused the timing belt to have to be replaced, we still had to replace at least one low-beam headlight every month because they kept blowing. The final straw was that the passenger door started having some kind of issue where it wouldn't unlock and stay unlocked - you unlock, pull handle, then it re-locks itself. We decided to part ways with this car last week. However, we are confident that our next car will be a better fit for us.

  2. Arturo Macejkovic 2025-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2001

OK, it looks good. However, I have only had this car since 86,000 miles (now 102,000) and I've had to replace the alternator twice, all four power windows, and I've had some fuel problems. The check engine light comes on and off sporadically, which can be frustrating. I'm really disappointed with this car and I don't think I'll be buying a Kia again.

  3. Darion Rutherford 2025-11-26

    Vehicle year: 2014

I purchased this car from a dealership about two years ago, but unfortunately, it has been a bit of a nightmare. The check engine light constantly flashes every other time I turn it on, forcing me to pull over and shut it off to reset it. After close to a year, the starter battery died, and I had to drive from Waterbury to Bridgeport to find the only battery in stock. Now, after two years of making payments, I am faced with a $6,500 mechanic bill to replace the short engine block after it exploded while driving 60 with no warning or check engine light. I have been calling the Kia customer service hotline for almost two months now because they claimed to have “documented” my incident and said that they would connect me with a case manager to see if I could get a possible reimbursement. I call every week for updates, but again and again, I'm told that my case manager is busy and that they will send him an email. I bought this car because I thought that I would save money on gas on my daily commutes to campus and work, but now I am ending up paying an extra half of the price of the whole car to not be able to drive it as Kia is in a deficit of replacement engines, and I have been waiting over a month and a half for my mechanic to be able to finally acquire a new engine that isn't from another scrapped Kia. I had to find a local repair shop to do the replacement as I felt that I was being taken advantage of by my Kia dealership. I was appraised $2,000 for my $12,000 car, and when I declined, the lady I spoke to suggested that I get some buddies and roll it on neutral into a tree. In conclusion, I am really upset about this purchase as it has put a serious detriment on my emotional, social, and financial health. I urge anybody who is a college student and thinking of buying this vehicle to save money on gas to do extra research and invest your money into a different and more reliable brand.

I've been driving my 2009 KIA Optima for three years now and while I've had a few issues with the transmission and built-in Bluetooth, it still handles well and is fun to drive. Plus, it gets great gas mileage which was exactly what I needed at the time.

We have owned three Kias so far - an Amanti, a Sorento for our son, and now an Optima. While the car ran great initially, unfortunately, the engine blew and we had to get it repaired. The approved repair was a re-manufactured engine, but every mechanic I spoke to suggested that a new engine would have been the correct repair for a 1 1/2 year old car with only 21,500 miles. If you are looking for a vehicle that will be repaired properly, it may be best to consider other options besides KIA.

I purchased my Optima in late May of this year and have been absolutely in love with it ever since. I decided to go with the LX model and added the convenience package for the back-up camera. As with any car, there may be some issues, and unfortunately, the 2014 Optima has a significant steering problem. Many people I have spoken with agree that they feel like they don't have full control of their car at high speeds, and even the slightest correction to the steering can cause the car to veer too far to the other side of the lane. Additionally, I personally am not a huge fan of the grey and beige options, and I find the gas mileage to be a bit lacking.

I bought this car back in 2005 when we had an addition to our family. We looked at several models including Altima, Malibu, Impala & Accord, but they were all out of our budget. Somehow, we ended up on the Kia lot and that's where the story begins. We took the car for a test drive and were pleasantly surprised by the nice interior, sunroof, good power, and auto-stick. Since owning the car, I haven't had a single problem besides getting a new battery and routine maintenance. However, the paint job isn't the best and the car doesn't hold its value.

Just traded in a 2011 Optima EX that we thoroughly enjoyed. It was comfortable, great looking, economical, and dependable. We upgraded to an SXL with the turbo and a few more bells and whistles. So far it's everything the first one was plus! After owning a long line of GM products, I can't see ever going back....my experience with these cars is just that good.

I'm so glad you found a car you love! It sounds like the Kia Optima was the perfect choice for you. You were able to see the quality in the car and the lower price sealed the deal. The engine sounds great and I love that it has dual auto/manual shifting. It's great to hear that it's even better than your previous cars, including the Toyota Corolla and Crown Victoria. Plus, the A/C system is stronger than the Crown Vic and the increased MPG from your Chevy S10 will save you money on long trips. It's amazing that you can go a whole month without fill ups or drive 512 miles! The 2.4 liter engine is also impressive and can handle almost anything. Overall, it sounds like the Kia Optima is a winner for the price and I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying it. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
