The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems
The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.
Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.
The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.
The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.
The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.
In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.

Just finished a highway trip of 350 miles each way through hilly country and I am thrilled to report an average MPG of 37.8! Throughout the journey, the seats remained comfortable and the ride was quiet. As someone who has owned a new car every other year for at least 20 years, I can confidently say that I have never received as many compliments for any other car. In fact, the other day a gas station attendant ran out to ask me questions about it. I am pleased to report that there has not been a single rattle or any maintenance required to-date. I highly recommend taking a look at this car as it offers unbeatable value for its price!

I've owned this car for about 6 months and I am extremely pleased with its performance, design and gas mileage. During a recent road trip, we averaged an impressive 41 miles to the gallon. The car is not only comfortable but also fun to drive. I was initially worried that my Optima might not live up to my previous car, a 2005 BMX X5, but it certainly did not disappoint. In fact, since my purchase, both my daughter and my parents have also purchased new Kias.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I absolutely love my 2015 Kia Optima, which I bought back in November 2014. With only 20,500 miles on it, it's still running like a dream. I've owned over three new vehicles in my lifetime, but this one is definitely my favorite. The exterior is sleek and stylish, and the interior is just as impressive. While I do have one small complaint about the front passenger seat being a bit low and not adjustable, it's really not a big deal. The only other thing I wish is that this car came in a manual transmission. Overall, I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish car. Upgrading to the Harmon Kardon stereo system means sacrificing a CD player, but it's definitely worth it. You can easily play your recorded music using a personal Apple iPhone, iPad, or any other MP3 player with the USB cord. Apart from this minor downside, the Kia Optima SXL Turbo offers a delightful ride with top safety and luxurious features that surpass those of other top auto manufacturers. It's worth noting that this is my second newly purchased KIA, and my previously owned 2010 KIA Forte LX accumulated over 195,000 miles with only normally scheduled maintenance. BRAVO! I expect nothing less than the same level of exceptional service from my 2016 KIA Optima SXL Turbo. The car has already acquired another ten thousand plus miles, and I am just as pleased as I was when I first bought it. The dealership recently pointed out that the front tires will require replacement, as the softer rubber of the Michelins wears faster than normal, and Kia will no longer use these tires. Two minor recalls were repaired last week, one for the transmission pausing when removing the foot from the accelerator pedal, and the other for lubricating the track of the moon roof. To date, the total cost for maintenance has been $39.00 for an oil change.

Since the time of purchase, I have experienced issues with acceleration. Despite being told that there was no problem found after a computer diagnosis, I continued to experience issues. As a woman, I felt that my concerns were not taken seriously. Our Kia Optima, purchased on 26th December 2007, experienced some issues shortly after. Despite taking it to the dealer multiple times, they were unable to identify any problems. However, we eventually took it to a certified mechanic who was able to identify and fix the issue within a couple of hours. Hello! Thank you for considering this car. It's a great option if you're looking for a budget-friendly vehicle that will get you from point A to point B. However, if you're looking for a car that holds its resale value, this may not be the best choice for you. Currently, it's worth more as a tax credit on donation or totaled than its trade-in value.
