Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common Kia Optima problems
The Kia Optima has been reported to have several common problems, with the worst category being engine problems.
Another common problem reported by Kia Optima owners is faulty starter issues. Many owners have reported that their engines suddenly wouldn't start at all, with no signs of what the issue is or that there was an issue in the first place. Although diagnostic tests don't show a clear cause of the engine problems, several owners were able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery and/or parking sensor.
The Kia Optima is also known for its faulty door latch problem, where it becomes very difficult to open the vehicle doors from both the inside and outside of the car. The cause of this issue is a faulty door latch assembly, and simply replacing the worn latch will often be all it takes to address the problem.
The main symptoms of a faulty throttle position switch (TPS) are the check engine light illuminating, combined with misfiring and power loss. According to owner reports, this issue tends to happen just after crossing the 100,000 miles milestone.
The Kia Optima’s weak alternator issue is also high on the list of reported Kia Optima problems. This issue generally comes to light when the car has been operating with high electrical loads, such as the driver running the lights, AC, etc., all at the same time – which results in insufficient battery charging capability, as well as making it difficult to start your vehicle. Some owners have reported that jump-starting their batteries or replacing the batteries helps solve the issue. However, several owners ended up experiencing the same issue over time.
In addition to these issues, there are also reports of door lock failures and transmission issues (software correctable) in various model years of the Kia Optima.

What year was bad for Kia Optima?
Kia Optima Years to Avoid: 2011
There were enough issues and pressure from consumers with widespread criticism that a class-action lawsuit was filed against Kia. Eventually, the carmaker recalled the 2011-2014 Optimas with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, among other cars.
Why are Kia Optimas so cheap?
The materials used are lower in quality than other manufacturers, but Kia is quite smart when it comes to production. Some of the cheaper plastics are used sparingly, so many of Kia's interiors look and feel fancy – but they still managed to save on production costs and pass the savings to the customers.

- Summary: Complaint Summary: I am the current owner of a 2014 Kia Optima, which is affected by recall 23V652 related to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU). The vehicle was imported to the UAE, and the recall was not addressed by the previous owner. As a result, I am now facing significant safety issues. Since taking ownership, I have encountered multiple engine problems, including sudden power loss, severe vibrations, and abnormal behavior from the throttle. These symptoms align with the issues outlined in the recall notice, indicating that the vehicle may pose a safety risk to me and other road users. It was only recently that I discovered the recall information online, which has heightened my concern regarding the safety of my vehicle and the potential for further complications. Given these circumstances, I am requesting assistance from the NHTSA in resolving this recall issue and guidance on how to proceed with the necessary repairs while the vehicle is registered under my name in the UAE. It is crucial for me to ensure the safety of my vehicle for my own protection and for the safety of others on the road. Vehicle year: 2004
This is actually the second Kia I've purchased. The first one was an '02 Sedona EX that was so reliable, my ex-wife fought for it in the divorce and ended up getting it. I bought this one brand new as an '04 left over for around 12K and have had very few issues. After 80K miles, all I've needed are oil changes, new brake pads, and two new tires (one due to a side wall puncture). I haven't had to use the warranty on this one, but I did have to use it in the past on the Sedona (for a power window and rear wiper motor) and had no issues invoking it. It's a great commuter car that also offers plenty of interior room. I'm definitely going to buy another Kia for my next car, but the way this one is going, it doesn't look like I'll be getting a new one for a while!

Vehicle year: 2005
I bought my 2005 Kia Optima from a friend back in June 2007 when it had almost 30k miles on it. Although I couldn't afford to get the 30k scheduled tune-up at the time (shame on me), I did make sure to get regular oil changes and tire rotations. The car only needed to go to the shop once, and the problem was an accelerator sensor that was fortunately covered by the warranty. Throughout the three years and 45k miles that I drove it, the car never broke down on me. I found the gas mileage to be great and the car felt very solid. Recently, I traded it in with 72k miles on it and bought a 2009 Kia Optima with only 12k miles on it. I decided to purchase another Kia because I was so impressed with the reliability of my previous one.

I bought this car 7 months ago and I am so happy to drive and step into it every day. The looks are absolutely stunning. The comfort is like sitting in your own living room. The interior is top-of-the-line and state of the art. The drive is smooth and luxurious and I feel like I'm driving a car worth $40,000.

I'm always interested to see how people react to things. This car has received mixed reviews, but I believe it's a great value and a really good car. It offers a huge range of features, has a warranty that should allay any fears about the unknown, and, finally, it looks hot. While it's not a perfect car, with a wide c-pillar that creates a blind spot, an engine that isn't V6 smooth, and seats that could be better, I still think it's a seriously good car for the money.

Vehicle year: 2010
I've had my Kia Optima for 6 months now and have put 4,000 miles on it. I previously owned a 2006 Sportage, but when I saw the Optima, I knew I had to have it. I'm constantly blown away by the attention it gets. People are always telling me how much they love its looks, especially the sharp red color. Whenever I pull up beside an Accord or Camry, I can't help but smile and think about how much money I saved while still having an equally great car. The Optima feels incredibly smooth and has plenty of power from its I-4 engine. In fact, it only has a few less horsepower than the V-6, so you can save a few bucks and still get a great car. The trunk is also incredibly spacious, and the car is comfortable even on long trips. The gas mileage is as advertised, which is a rarity these days. Needless to say, my family and I are very pleased with our Kia Optima, and we recommend Kia to everyone we know.

My Kia's doors started locking and unlocking by themselves while I was driving. Currently, I am unable to open either one of my front doors and have to climb over the back seat of my car. This is a common defect of the car, which can be a serious safety concern and very costly. It is important to note that Kia has not taken responsibility for this issue. If you are looking for a safe car, I would recommend considering other options as this defect may pose a risk to your safety.

I purchased my car from Enterprise Cars in January 2007 with 40K miles on it. I had the car for almost exactly 5 years and during that time, it drove great and required minimal maintenance. I made sure to keep up with all the required maintenance, including the timing belt replacement at 75K miles. After about 4 years, I noticed a decline in gas mileage and took it in for a fuel system cleaning and a few other things. Unfortunately, without any warning, the engine malfunctioned and was permanently damaged. Although I was disappointed to say goodbye to my car, I was able to sell it for $600. While some people say that Kias are cheaply made, I had a great experience with mine and it served me well for many years.

Hi there! My husband and I recently decided to expand our family, which meant we needed a bigger car. Unfortunately, we've had a few issues with our Kia. In the first week of owning it, we had to replace the crank sensor. While it was fine for about three weeks, it went out again. We've also had to replace the oil pump twice since we bought the car, and now it's going out again. Our check engine light has been kicking on and off, so we took the car to have a diagnostic run and found out that the crank sensor is bad again. Interestingly, our cousin bought a car just like ours and has had the same problems. While we're disappointed with the car's performance, we're hopeful that we can find a solution. Thanks for listening!

I have experienced several issues with my 2007 Kia Optima. Despite having a warranty, the process of maintaining it has been challenging and expensive. Recently, the engine and transmission were replaced, but unfortunately, the car is still not running smoothly. The dealership has assured me that they have completed all the necessary work that Kia would cover.

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently purchased a 2016 KIA Optima EX and initially, I was very pleased with it. However, I have experienced some mechanical issues that have changed my opinion. Unfortunately, the car has proven to be unreliable as the engine has stalled multiple times and at times, it would not accelerate. This has made driving the car dangerous, especially when it stalled while I was doing 70 mph on the interstate! I took the car in for service on four occasions and each time, I was assured that the problem was taken care of. However, the last time it stalled, I had to tow it to the dealership and expressed my concern that the car was a lemon. I was scared to drive it and wanted to trade it, which I did for a 2017 Optima EX. Unfortunately, the same issue has started with the new vehicle and it now has 22,000 miles on it. I called the same dealership today and spoke to the service department. Although they claimed to have never heard of this issue before, I reminded them that I had reported it about 7 or 8 months ago. I hope they can resolve the issue this time around.
