2017 Kia Optima problems

The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.

First generation (MS; 2000)

From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.

In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common 2017 Kia Optima problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Kia Optima, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Loss of Power While Accelerating: A prevalent issue among 2017 Optima owners is a loss of power while accelerating, typically occurring around 80,000 miles. This problem is often caused by carbon buildup in the engine as it ages. Cleaning the carbon out of the engine costs around $350, depending on local labor rates.
  2. Brake Lights Failing: Some owners have reported brake lights failing at approximately 45,000 miles. This issue is commonly due to a burnt-out bulb, which costs $5 to replace. However, if the wiring is damaged or has water in the connectors, the repair can be more expensive.
  3. Wheel Bearing Issues: Wheel bearing problems have been found in some Optima models within the first 50,000 miles. As the vehicle ages, the bearings wear out and need replacement. Changing out the wheel bearings costs around $150 per bearing and is a common issue in many cars.
  4. Recalls: The 2017 Kia Optima has two recalls, which is fewer than some other midsize sedans. One recall addresses a high-pressure fuel pipe that may leak, while the other involves the voltage protection device. Kia offers free replacements for these parts on affected models.

These problems, although common among 2017 Kia Optima owners, are not unique to this model and are similar to issues found in other midsize cars. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-07
  • VIN: 5XXGT4L36HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Took the car to the dealership to diagnose an issue that I know Kia has a settlement for which is the engine class settlement and the dealership is trying to say the cause of known issue is from another source so they do not have to cover the cost of a replacement engine. The dealership is saying my option is to pay 8-10k for a new engine when it should be covered under the lifetime engine warranty which they confirmed I have. Engine light popped up the day of taking it to dealer. The engine has the possibility of seizing putting the driver or others at risk of serious accident.

SEAT BELTS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • VIN: 5XXGT4L3XHG
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine is burning 2 QT of oil every month and burning it in under 1000 miles. Kia dealership says it's a common issue but can't help me until the engine seizes up. The car has less than 85k miles on it. How can this be a common issue but they can't fix it till the engine dies? What if the engine dies out of warranty? Then I'm out 12k for a new engine that will die in 80k miles. This should be a recall.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 5XXGT4L3XHG
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The KSDS in my engine is causing engine failure due to the dealership failing to fix the problem when I first experienced stalling, lagging and misfiring of my vehicle, which would often make it shake and I would have to turn the car off and reignite it, sometimes more than once. My safety is at risk when driving, because the vehicle will lag while trying to accelerate in traffic. My mechanic researched the issue and found the recall and Kia said they fixed it when it was issued and they didn’t. My CHECK ENGINE light is flashing now and it continues to lose power. I have contacted Kia about the issue and I’m waiting on a response.

  • VIN: 5XXGU4L33HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine Is losing oil. Taking it to KIA dealership and other repair shops around our area and she has to have her oil changed every thousand miles because the oil is going somewhere but they don’t know where because there’s no leakage anywhere. I see there’s 100 of other complaints about this key should be responsible. Please indicate what we can do about this doesn’t have that many miles on it.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: KNAGV4LD7H5
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: This car was purchased [XXX] and has been in my possession for 3 years and 4 months. It has sat in a dealership repair facility for 13 of those months to replace the engine and high-voltage hybrid battery. Meaning I have actively driven this vehicle for approximately 27 months and the retraction system for the seatbelts is malfunctioning and as its a safety issue I feel the need to report this and see what other alternatives are available instead of paying out $1121.58 for something that malfunctioned under the first 10 years of the vehicles life sounds more like a design flaw than a user issue or uneasy wear as I am a [XXX] average build individual. As the vehicle went into the dealership for routine scheduled maintenance I noticed the driver and passenger seat belts don’t lock or retract properly. Service tech stated the retraction system is malfunctioning and they will both need to be replaced. With this system not working the driver and passenger are not able to be restrained properly in case of an accident. No lights or warnings appeared just noticed while driving in rush hour traffic in Buffalo, New York. *With this being a “more rare” PLUG IN HYBRID variant instead of a conventional ICE many issues don’t carry over so I would really like this to be investigated for the safety of the owners of this car.* INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-15
  • VIN: KNAGT4L33H5
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: On 11/02/2023 I mailed in the KIA request for Reimbursement form. I included a reciept from KIA of Fargo, ND for the Trunk latch assembly. My trunk latch failed in August of 2022, I had to leave Fargo so I cancelled my service appointment. Then purchased the trunk latch assembly and installed it myself. I included labor of $180 and part cost of $62.68. KIA sent an aknowlegment of the reimbursement form on 02/22/2024 they were reviewing the form. As of today I have not yet received the reimbursement. KIA is not following through in a timely manner on this trunk latch recall.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-22
  • VIN: KNAGU4LE8H5
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The Hybrid Warning light came on. This was the third time this has happened. The first time Kia said it was the Air Box and I paid $600 to repair. The second time the shop mistakenly cleared the codes before determining the cause. The third time they say it is the Wiring Harness and will cost $4,550 to report if they have the harness. This vehicle has recall for the connecting rod in the engine which I suspect is the real issue due to clicking noise it makes just before the lights come on, but each time I take it in I am told it is something else. Since it is the Wiring Harness this time it could be a fire hazard especiall on a Hybrid with Lithium batteries, I am not going to repair it as it has left me on the road too many times and I am sure it has the connecting rod issue. I hope nobody else has this issue and unfortunately Kia does not seem interested in repairing it, it was in the shop for 6 weeks before they diagnosed it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-29
  • VIN: 5XXGT4L34HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Ms. Nadine Thomas, who is running for District 44 in Georgia, has served on the Georgia House of Representatives and the Georgia State Senate is my boss and know what I have been through with my vehicle and has heard from KIA in Athens GA that there is nothing they can do. I have a 2017 KIA Optima that I have been having problems with since around 06/2022 or a little before. I have been getting oil changes and putting oil in the vehicle every week or every other week. It finally took a mechanic to tell me it is an issue with Kia's and a recall due to the replacement of the motor because the cars are losing oil. I do not have an oil leak but losing it every week and replacing it and it is expensive for an oil change and a gallon of oil constantly. I have reached out to KIA Manufacturer and case was denied, BBB and KIA denied it all the way, through where I went has far as to the attributor. Georgia Attorney General and they sent a letter to the Bulldog KIA in Athens and they said I have to go through the process of either hearing a thumping noise or motor light flashing constantly and or car shuts off before my motor can be replace. None of this has happened. I had to pay out of pocket for a tune up which was over $300 in Sept 2023 and again early this year 2023 and no reimbursement but it’s on my KIA receipts due to oil consumption (leaking of oil) it’s causing me to keep replacing the spark plugs. Renting vehicles when they would have to keep my vehicle to replace the spark plugs, and missing time from work. They will not compensate me for it, replace the motor, and or provide me another vehicle. I feel also because I am a woman that I am racially profiled, I have been very professional, calm, and provided more than enough time, effort, and providing all the information to KIA and I am not getting nowhere or through to anyone that will hear me or understand what I am going through. Previous NHTSA ID Number is 11518826, awaiting for response back from Ossoff Office.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-25
  • VIN: 5XXGT4L37HG
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I am writing to bring a critical safety concern to your attention regarding my 2017 Kia Optima LX. The steering wheel of my vehicle frequently loses power, necessitating a restart of the engine for it to function properly again. This issue occurs randomly, but consistently takes place during steering wheel turns. On one alarming occasion while navigating a winding canyon road, the steering lost power, compelling me to slam on the brakes to prevent the car from falling off the cliff. Another incident occurred while making a right turn, resulting in me slamming on the brakes to avoid colliding with oncoming cars, narrowly escaping a potential rear-end accident. When the steering loses power, it remains functional but demands significant physical effort. Unfortunately, in attempting to steer during one episode, I strained a muscle, leading to a week of suffering. Despite the severity of this safety concern, Kia refuses to address the issue unless they can replicate it during a service visit. The problem occurs randomly, ranging from three times a day to once a month, with no warning signs prior to power loss. Kia has acknowledged this issue, evident in the warranty extension they provided up to 150k miles (attached). Regrettably, when I take the car to the dealership, they decline to address the problem due to an inability to replicate it. I believe this recurring steering malfunction poses a serious risk to my safety and the safety of others on the road. Your intervention in investigating this matter would be greatly appreciated to ensure the well-being of Kia Optima LX drivers. Attached, please find the mentioned warranty extension letter from Kia and an image displaying the MDPS warning light illuminated during instances when the steering lost power. Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter. The contact stated Kia inspected the vehicle but was unable to replicate the issue during their inspection. However, they recommended replacing the assembly column as a potential solution, but the contact declined due to lack of assurance that the assembly column replacement would resolve the issue.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-22
  • VIN: 5XXGU4L34HG
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I drive with my lights on auto. Occasionally the lights go out for no apparent reason. Both inside and headlights. I then have to hold the high beam switch on until I can turn lights on and off or use directional. Sometimes using the directional will cause lights to go out as well. This can happen several days in a row or maybe once or twice a week. I have noticed a few times the box appearing in my dashboard saying lights were off. I had done nothing for them to go out. If a cop sees this happen I am sure to get pulled over. This has been going on for a year=3 trips to 2 different dealers. I brought my car to two different dealers and they both said without it happening when they have it they cannot do anything. I do not understand how a few years ago they fixed something incorrectly and I had to go back for a different part. Apparently this can't be done for this. So, I just risk my life every time I drive at night!!

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-19
  • VIN: 5XXGT4L34HG
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Every time after I get an oil change I’m constantly having to put oil in it because it goes dry every 2 days and my check engine light stays on before and after oil change, randomly shaking soon as I turn the car on then the oil light comes on every time I go over a speed bump! The car slams on breaks when it wants and has even did it when in fast traffic on the highway.

I understand your frustration with the Optima. It seems like the car has a lot of issues with noise, handling, and moisture retention. It's disappointing when a purchase doesn't live up to our expectations. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I rented a car for a week and found it to be an interesting experience. As someone with long legs, I did find that the console had a sharp edge that rubbed against my right shin, which was a bit uncomfortable. While the ride and handling were fairly good, I did notice that the engine and 6AT were not a good match. Smooth acceleration was not easy, especially in sport mode. In regular and eco modes, the transmission was reluctant to downshift, so I had to force it a little, which made the car lurch a bit. Additionally, the tendency to want to hang around 1300 RPM when I wanted it to downshift made the engine a little buzzy and noisy in that range. However, the brakes worked well, although they were a bit touchy for my liking. Overall, I was glad to get back to my Camry SE after a week in the rental car. The Camry's 4-banger is quieter and torquier in the lower RPM, and the drivetrain is smoother and easier to work for mild acceleration increases. Additionally, the center console is better designed for those with long legs like myself.

I'm 5'5 and even with the seat all the way up, I still struggle to see over the hood and judge where the front of the car is. The seats are quite hard and long trips can be uncomfortable. Unfortunately, when it snows, the ice tends to stay on the windshield no matter how I adjust the defrosters. Unlike my other cars, it doesn't have a compass. While the trunk is spacious, the trunk lid is quite small and larger items won't fit. On the bright side, it has great acceleration and has always been reliable. It's a great car for running errands, but I wouldn't recommend it for long distance trips.

After purchasing my car, I noticed a creaking sound when the rear tires went into dips in the road. Unfortunately, one dealership was not willing to diagnose the issue properly, so I had to contact KIA corporate and take it to a different dealership. It turned out that there were defective welds in the rear. While the dealership mechanics did not do a great job with the warranty work, I still appreciate the KIA 100,000 miles warranty. However, I do worry about taking my car to them for any additional repairs, as I fear they may break something else while attempting to fix something under warranty. In my experience, I have had issues with weld defects, headlights, a/c control, a/c actuator, electric folding mirror, and transmission shifter, all within 50k miles of highway driving. As a demanding customer who previously owned Toyotas, I found them to be excellently built and functioning cars. However, after my ten-year-old Toyota was totaled in a crash with an unlicensed driver, I decided to try a different brand. I needed an all-around sedan type vehicle without a 40 grand price tag, and my SX Turbo with tech package cost 32 thousand including tax and fees. At first, I had some issues with the steering, as it felt numb and/or stiff, which caused me to park incorrectly. Additionally, despite having expensive Michelin tires, I felt like the suspension didn't allow me to take full advantage of the tires on curves. However, I can report that the automatic emergency braking works very well with the sensors and tires to avoid accidents, even on wet surfaces. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and believe that the Michelin tires are worth it!The turbo engine is very powerful, especially in highway passing (40-70) and at above-legal speeds (watch out for tickets). However, there are some issues with steering and road feel, as well as visibility (even with blind spot monitor), which can make quick maneuvers through highway traffic feel unsafe. In crowded conditions, it's best to stay in the left lane and use brute speed to efficiently go from place to place. A car with more road feel and visibility, like the Honda Accord, might allow for safer and quicker maneuvering between cars. Additionally, the car has three drive modes (eco, sport, and normal). In normal mode, the turbo engine can be somewhat inconsistent on certain slightly hilly up and down roads, making it difficult to accelerate predictably when passing or merging into traffic. To ensure maximum acceleration at those times, it's best to have the car in sport mode. However, once you are off the highway in more urban traffic, starting from a dead stop in sport mode can be extremely noisy and difficult to control, calling unnecessary attention to yourself. It's best to switch out of sport mode in town to avoid drawing attention. Overall, the turbo engine is a great feature, but it's important to be aware of its limitations and adjust your driving accordingly. Finally, I noticed some details that were poorly tested, such as one-touch windows that are very difficult not to activate, a defogger that takes more than 15 minutes to do the job, and automatic locking keyless entry that I couldn't figure out how to unlock the other doors once I had unlocked the front one. There was also a one-click gas cap that had a weird feel, cheap carpeting on the rear shelf when I had leather seats, dry leather on the steering wheel, paint that chipped with the tiniest stone, a navigation system that couldn't find the local bus station, and voice recognition that didn't recognize. Minor problems under warranty that dealerships should be repairing easily were also a problem: service reps couldn't duplicate the concern, and techs couldn't fix something or broke something new when fixing it. Finally, I had to get a manufacturer field rep to repair the auto head and rear lamps, which would go off for no reason in the middle of the night. Also, generally, the materials of the interior and exterior seemed brittle, easy to break/scratch, and of poor quality. Look, it's a beautiful looking car for sure (in this version), and most everybody agrees it is, but if you're a demanding, detail-oriented customer who likes quality above all else (and I don't mean name brand, but years of flawless service), look elsewhere. I've maintained this car extremely well.

If you are considering purchasing a used or new Kia, it is important to be aware of potential engine issues. It may be helpful to research Kia engine recalls and to keep an eye on oil levels. While some customers have reported issues with their Kia engines, it is important to note that every car is different and experiences may vary. It is always a good idea to do your own research and make an informed decision based on your individual needs and preferences.

Positive 2017 Kia Optima car reviews

I had never really considered a Kia before, but I was looking for a more 'grown up' car after having a Scion XB for 8 years that I loved. I started asking people I knew who had purchased new Kias what they thought, and 100% said they'd buy a Kia again when they looked for a new car. At first, I thought I'd just get an LX because I could buy it outright, but then I drove the EX. It was so comfortable and beautiful, and had literally more interior features than I had on the Lexus LS I had years ago. The sunroof is amazing, all of the dash instruments are easy to use and in logical places, and easy to get to. My last car made a horrible wobbling wind sound when I had a window open or cracked on the freeway, but this doesn't do that. I adore the heated seats and steering wheel, and the tushy cooler is AWESOME. I also love that it knows I'm close and opens the mirrors and unlocks when I touch the handle. I have only one complaint so far after having this car for 7 months: if it's been raining and I open the trunk, the way it's designed allows the water to run off into the trunk, which I find odd. For the price and warranty, I honestly can't imagine a better car. My sister bought something the same year and paid way more, but it has less features!
