2021 Kia K5 problems
The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common 2021 Kia K5 problems
The 2021 Kia K5 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily in the categories of AC/heater, electrical, and engine issues.
- AC/Heater Problems: One of the most widespread complaints from 2021 Kia K5 owners is related to the A/C system. These issues typically appear within the first 2,500 miles and are often caused by a faulty blower motor that needs to be replaced. The cost of replacing the blower motor is around $1,250, but it is usually covered under warranty for the first few years.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical issues have been reported by Kia K5 owners, with one instance leading to a vehicle fire. Other electrical problems include losing a wireless CarPlay connection, warning lights on the instrument panel, and faulty sensors affecting tire pressure, headlights, and the speedometer. Additionally, airbag problems have been reported, with three instances of airbags not deploying during collisions, leading to injuries.
- Engine Problems: Engine problems have also been reported, including engine bay noise due to the engine cover being off, fender damage from rubbing the wheel/tire, and the hanging fog light housing. Another complaint concerns the cooling system, where antifreeze vapor seeps into the engine area when the vehicle is turned off, causing a strong coolant smell. In some cases, the engine may throw a rod and require a full engine replacement, as reported by a K5 owner in the forum.
These common problems with the 2021 Kia K5 can lead to inconvenience and additional costs for owners, especially when they occur outside of the warranty period. It is essential to be aware of these issues when purchasing a used 2021 Kia K5 and consider the potential costs of repairs and maintenance.

- VIN: 5XXG14J2XMG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: While driving on my way home from work my , brakes became extremely hard to press down on and then my service engine light came on this all occurred on 7/31/2024. So the very next day I took my vehicle to a Kia dealership which was 8/1/ 2024 to find out what was causing this to happen. The technician stated that they would have to put it on a machine and run a diagnostic on it. I asked the technician while they were doing that to change the oil. I also realized that the oil light for my vehicle has NEVER came on since I purchased the car. So the technician did the diagnostic and stated that my vacuum pump had went out but he couldn’t tell me why or how this had happened. I then took the vehicle to my parents house and left it there in the garage for a few weeks to have second opinion done. I then took it to another Kia dealership and they stated there was no vacuum to the brake booster and said there was a broken camshaft and metal pieces were in the engine and the engine needed to be replaced. Again I asked what caused all of this and no one could give me an answer. I had only had the car a 1 1/2 years and don’t understand what caused all of this and I now have a car that I can no longer drive.

This is a safety issue in regards to living in Arizona, the heat is deadly. I will be trading my car in if this isn't recalled.

It just started making a loud noise like I had blown a tire! I pulled over and noticed it was hanging down on the road. I had not hit anything, the bracket had it fully broken, it could have caused me to wreck or put any other drivers at risk for an accident. This isn’t the only Kia K5 I’ve seen with the engine dust cover hanging beneath the vehicle.

- Summary: Purge control valve but pressure in my gas tank and it has expanded. Kia will not replace my tank. Heard 2 loud bangs going down the road I started smelling gas. Check engine light came on. Pulled over and gas is pushing up and out behind my tank flowing down my wheel well. Opened the gas cap and it sprayed gas all over me. I have 2 small children and this could have been a extremely worse situation than it was. On another note I took my car to the dealership they did the update and confirmed my gas tank had expanded. They are not replacing my tank they said bc kia has "no remedy". And tried to sell me a bunch of other services on my vehicle instead. I've contacted kia and they basically told me the same thing they at this time will not be replacing my tank. I've picked the car up they cleared the codes and the car is still running rough.

I have both of these replaced, the AC work for a few minutes and then stopped again. I took it back to the same shop and the mechanic indicated that the fuse box was melted/burned (I have a picture as evidence). This is a tremendous fire hazard and we have been leaving our car parked outside of our home out of fear that it will catch fire. Their were no warning lamps whatsoever that indicated that there was a problem. Upon further online research, it appears that numerous people are having the same issue and Kia Motors has not done anythins about it, and we are having to pay thousands of dollars for repair when it is a manufacturer defect.

Only way to use their system to answer a call while driving is to physically pick up the phone from the charger, look at the phone and press the bluetooth function twice to answer the call.. I was at two dealers and talked to their corporate customer service reps and an escalation rep who told me they do not support Android any longer and to hard wire Android play for use. I tried that and Android play does not work very well. To answer a phone is basically the same process. The mechanic at one of the dealers has a Kia and told me he has the same issue. How many other folks are driving Kias and have to take their eyes off the road to answer a call? This is Extremely dangerous. Kia will do nothing to fix the problem. The car is my office. I need to have these functions working just like when i purchased the car. This is my business. This is going to cause a crash

My last two cars were a 2015 Chrysler 200 Limited and a 2016 BMW 528i Drive. However, I recently decided to go with the GT Line K5 and I'm happy with my decision. Comparing the three cars, the K5 has a smoother ride than the Chrysler and is only a grade below the BMW in terms of handling. The K5 also has more back row seating space than both cars, which is great for our new born car seat. The technology in the K5 is pretty impressive, especially the 10 inch screen and adaptive cruise control. The car practically drives itself! I also love the Wolf Grey exterior and red interior. The sound system is on par with the BMW, which is impressive considering the price difference. Overall, I think the K5 is a sweet ride and definitely worth the price.

It's great to hear that you find the car fun to drive and comfortable. It's also a beautiful car to look at!

The 1.6 provides excellent acceleration and yet provides great gas mileage. We love all the safety stuff on the car. It looks great.
-
You have an excellent car, one of the best you've ever owned! On the highway, you've been averaging an impressive 39.4 miles per gallon. During your recent vacation to Florida, you were driving at speeds of 60 to 70 miles per hour with the air conditioning on the whole time, and you won't believe it, but your car averaged an amazing 47.4 miles per gallon on the open highway, even with all your suitcases loaded in the car. That's truly impressive!
-
I see that you had an Optima and it sounds like you've had some great improvements with the turbo, transmission, and steering. It's great to hear that you find the ride comfortable and the styling impressive. I understand that you're having some trouble connecting your phone to the car, have you tried checking the manual or contacting customer support for assistance?

Although the wolf grey with red syntax leather interior looked great, I encountered several issues with the car. The interior had an unpleasant smell that persisted even after a few weeks. Additionally, the premium package did not include heated seats or a heated steering wheel, which was surprising. The display in the car also malfunctioned frequently, which was frustrating. Despite my initial excitement, I decided to trade in the car after only 3 months of ownership. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle.

I had a power loss issue with my K5, and unfortunately, the dealership couldn't find anything wrong with it. Several months later, Kia released a recall for the same issue. However, when I took my car to the dealership for service and the recall, they told me that my car wasn't under any recalls. I was disappointed and concerned for my safety and my children's safety. I hope Kia can address this issue soon.
Cody Runolfsdottir 2024-07-14
The car is aesthetically pleasing both inside and out. During the first oil change at 2,850 miles, the shop informed me of a transmission fluid issue which I will address with confidence.

I test drove the Gt line a couple of times and it is truly a good looking car. However, when I pushed the engine, it felt a bit weak and like it wanted to complain. The ride was a bit stiff, which could be due to the size or pressure of the tires. Additionally, the color choices for both the exterior and interior are limited. Despite these minor drawbacks, I still think it offers good value.

I recently traded my beloved 2012 Optima SX for a 2021 EX. However, upon arriving home, I noticed that the rearview mirror lacked garage door opener capabilities and auto-dimming, which I had missed during the test drives. Additionally, I had previously noticed that the outside mirrors do not fold electrically, and this model does not have an indoor trunk handle for shutting the trunk. I am currently working on figuring out how to turn off the Sirius sound when turning off the engine, as the music currently stays on.
