2008 Jaguar Xj sedan problems
The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.
Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)
Overview
The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.
For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.
The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 2008 Jaguar Xj sedan problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2008 Jaguar XJ sedan, several common problems have been reported:
- Coolant Reservoir Wear: The XJ is prone to rapid wear of the coolant reservoir, resulting in overheating and leaks. Cracks in the reservoir can lead to coolant leakage around the engine, necessitating regular checks and potential replacement to prevent engine damage.
- Hydraulic Roof Issues: Some owners have faced problems with the roof mechanism, either stopping opening/closing or taking a long time to operate. This issue is often attributed to sub-par hydraulic fluid, which can be resolved by flushing the fluid and using Jaguar-approved replacements.
- Leaking Engine Oil Pan Gasket: A common issue involves a leaking engine oil pan gasket, causing a burning smell inside and outside the car. Replacing the gasket is a relatively straightforward fix and can prevent further complications related to oil leaks.
- Airbag Faults: Some XJ sedans have experienced airbag faults, where the airbags may not deploy in a collision due to a misprogrammed Restraint Control Module (RCM). This issue requires a software update to the RCM to ensure proper airbag deployment in case of an accident.
- Power Steering Issues: Loss of power steering, requiring more effort to turn the wheel, can be caused by an electrical short circuit. Jaguar typically covers the repair for free, even if the car is not under warranty, making it essential to address this issue promptly.
- Brake Pipe Leaks: XJ models built between February and July 2014 may experience leaking brake pipes due to incorrectly tightened union joints. Replacing these joints is crucial to maintain brake performance and safety while driving.
These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise with the 2008 Jaguar XJ sedan to ensure a reliable and safe driving experience.
Is Jaguar XJ 2008 reliable?
Beauty, Power and Reliability
The most solidly built, most agile, most pure performance car I've ever owned. I have never seen a more reliable car. Though it has a V8 engine, it gets 33 mpg on the freeway. Much more durable interior than newer models, and last of the "Classic Jaguar XJ" design.
Is Jaguar XJ a reliable car?
Likewise any work on the engines, and always check for a full service history. As far as reliability goes, there's some good news. The XJ finished top in the luxury car class in our most recent reliability survey, with an excellent overall score of 94.3%.
Why did Jaguar stop making XJ?
The XJ was pulled because there's no way that Jaguar could produce enough models to justify the cost. See the discontinuation of the electric XJ as a way of Jaguar ensuring it has the financial health to quickly adapt its lineup to an all-electric future.
How many miles can a Jaguar XJ last?
The estimated lifespan of a Jaguar Xj is 318,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy. Don't just buy it, VehicleScore it.
