The Hyundai Veracruz (Korean: 현대 베라크루즈), also known as the Hyundai ix55 in Europe and Russia, is a mid-size crossover that was manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 2006 to 2015. The Veracruz was sold in the United States, Canada, South Korea, China, Morocco, South America and the Middle East.

It was also imported to Europe and parts of Asia from 2007 to 2011. The Veracruz was discontinued in other countries, except South Korea. Its name refers to the Mexican state of Veracruz; however, despite being named after the Mexican state, it was never actually sold in Mexico.

History

The official date of unveiling in South Korea was October 12, 2006, and was made available in the United States as a 2007 model. The Veracruz went on sale in March 2007, and is Hyundai's largest crossover SUV.

It replaced the truck based Terracan that was sold worldwide except for North America. The Veracruz is built on a Hyundai Santa Fe platform. The revamped 2011 Veracruz was based on the same platform as the Kia Sorento.

The Veracruz gets its name from a state in Mexico, continuing the Western theme from the small Tucson SUV and mid-size Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Powering the Veracruz is a 3.8 L 260 hp (190 kW) V6 engine with an Aisin sourced six speed Shiftronic Automatic transmission.

In Europe, it was sold only with 3.0 L CRDI V6 diesel S-Line engine with Variable geometry turbocharger and 240 hp (180 kW). In 2008, the Veracruz was also sold in some European countries as the ix55.

Common Hyundai Veracruz problems

The Hyundai Veracruz, a midsize crossover SUV, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

One of the most common issues with the suspension of the Veracruz is the premature failure of the front struts. This problem can cause noise, vibration, and poor handling, making for an uncomfortable driving experience.

For the 2007-2009 Veracruz models, engine stall or failure to start is a common issue. This problem can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty fuel pump, a bad ignition coil, or a clogged fuel filter. In some cases, the engine may simply fail to start, while in others it may stall while driving, which can be a serious safety concern. To address this issue, owners of 2007-2009 Veracruz models should have their vehicles inspected by a certified mechanic or dealership.

Electrical problems are also common in the 2010-2012 Hyundai Veracruz models. These problems can range from issues with the electrical system, such as malfunctioning power windows or locks, to issues with the engine's electrical components, such as a faulty alternator. One common electrical issue reported in the Veracruz is related to the power windows and locks. Some owners have reported that the windows may not function properly, or the locks may fail to engage or disengage. These issues may be caused by a malfunctioning power window motor, faulty wiring, or a damaged switch.

Another common electrical issue reported by Veracruz owners is related to the alternator. The alternator is responsible for providing power to the vehicle's electrical system and charging the battery. When the alternator fails, it can cause a variety of problems, including a dead battery, flickering headlights, and issues with the vehicle's electronic systems. To diagnose and repair electrical problems in a 2010-2012 Veracruz, it's recommended to consult a certified mechanic or dealership.

It's worth noting that while these issues were more commonly reported in specific model years, they can potentially occur in other model years as well. Therefore, it's important for Veracruz owners to stay informed and take preventative measures to keep their vehicles running smoothly. If you experience any issues with your vehicle, it's always best to consult a certified mechanic or dealership for proper diagnosis and repair.

Hyundai Veracruz 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-07
  • VIN: KM8NUDCC9AU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving at approximately 35 mph Check Engine Light came on P0331 Knock Sensor - light was cleared drove 14 miles CEL was back on. Called Hyundai about the code & knock sensor in reference to all the Hyundai models being recalled for the same problem and a warranty extension being granted. Hyundai advised me to take it to a local dealer for diagnosis and pay the fee of course. I did just that. The dealer clear the codes and sent me home. CEL was on again. Car was back at dealer confirmed knock sensor replacement needed. I inquired about extension of warranty on my car. I was told it's not on the list. Called Hyundai back advised of the confirmation of diagnosis just to be informed that my car isn't covered under the extension warranty. We established that already. I asked to be escalated & was given a supervisor who suggested while the problem is being investigated I could ask the dealer to request Goodwill from Hyundai. Denied. Called Hyundai to follow up on my claim, I was advised claim closed my car isn't covered under the extension warranty for the same problem as other models and out of original warranty. Which I already knew. I was trying to find out if my car should be added to the list covered. I was told once the claim is closed it is closed. Hyundai needs to protect the owners of all Hyundai vehicles not just the popular ones. Since they closed my claim that fast. I would love an explanation as to why I was advised to take it to the dealer pay the fee and 25x the price for repair vs an independent shop. This is the 3rd time I've been without my car while it sits at the dealer waiting on parts. I'm left with a large bill, an unsafe engine and no vehicle. Hyundai needs to be held accountable. We shouldn't fear for our safety while driving. Bought in 2011 & it currently has 106,350 miles. Still within the 15 year, 150,000 mile warranty extended to other Hyundai owners whether original or not. I'm the original owner. My vehicle needs to be safe to drive.

Hyundai Veracruz 2008
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-28
  • VIN: KM8NU73C28U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ABS Anti-Lock Brake System Failure (ABS Control Unit) As seen in NHTSA CAMPAIGN [XXX], for newer year models, The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. This recall should also include 2008-2010 Hyundai Veracruz's as the ABS Module is the same part number and can leak brake fluid. This can lead to serious injury or death as the car may not function as intended or catch on fire. I noticed a strong burning smell similar to burning toast when the car was dropped off at the shop. My Mechanics noticed my ABS Control Unit had liquid coming out of the poorly sealed module, and told me to report this to the NTSHA. The unit had to be replaced for about $3800. The first symptom is the ESC Light flashing while driving. Others include the AWD Light, Brake Light, ABS Light, and, Traction Control Lights. On many forums like the link shown below other people have experienced this issue on the 2008 Hyundai Veracruz as well. This indicate that the recall should be pushed to ALL Veracruz models. Hyundai should be responsible for the safety of all Veracruz owners just not a few. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Latest negative Hyundai Veracruz car reviews

  1. Dustin Hill 2025-07-15

    Vehicle year: 2012

I really appreciate the great layout of the Vera Cruz. However, I have noticed some issues with the car's interior. Although the steering wheel started peeling after only 7 months, I was pleased to see that it was replaced at no charge. Unfortunately, both of the front leather seats are now showing wear, and while they are supposed to be replaced at no cost, I am concerned about the possibility of this happening again. The ride can be a bit choppy at 30-35 miles, but overall it's a great car. I do have some concerns about the quality of the interior, and the dealer did admit that he has seen similar issues in other Vera Cruz's in the past. I wonder why Hyundai hasn't addressed this issue yet. As for whether I would recommend this car, I'm still undecided.

  2. Lucious Dare 2025-06-29

    Vehicle year: 2008

Before purchasing this vehicle, I did some research and found that almost all of the ratings were great, except for one that reported electrical problems from the beginning. Unfortunately, I am now experiencing similar issues. After only 10 months, the alarm would trigger every time I unlocked and opened the door. The dealership replaced a circuit card, but then the steering wheel would not tilt. They replaced the switch twice and then the entire steering column. However, the problem persisted and they had to replace another circuit card. Unfortunately, three weeks later, the issue has returned. Additionally, the DVD volume is much louder than the radio and the dealership has been unable to fix it. The fan under the hood is also very loud at times and I am experiencing a lot of rattles and wind noise.

  3. Santa Corkery 2025-06-03

    Vehicle year: 2007

I recently purchased the Veracruz about 4 months ago. Unfortunately, within the first week, there was a loud thumping noise in the rear end. Then, when winter hit and I attempted to use the AWD feature, I quickly realized that it did not work due to a loud grinding noise. After my wife put 1000 miles on it, I had to take it to the shop. They replaced the entire rear end and 4-wheel drive due to oil contamination, or so I was told. While it was in the shop, I asked them to check the front end, which was also making a lot of noise. Unfortunately, they did not check it, so now I am back in my loaner vehicle. After paying nearly 30k for a vehicle and now back in a loaner car, I am quite dissatisfied. I hope the issue gets resolved soon.

The SUV has a lot of power and space, making it a comfortable ride. However, there have been some issues with the electrical system, air conditioning, and leather interior quality. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts such as the a/c compressor, a/c electric controlled vents, turning indicator switch, brake switch, and abs sensors. Additionally, the passenger side mirror turned black due to the heating option not turning off and burning the mirror. The passenger side electric seat controls and stock alarm system also stopped working. Despite these issues, the SUV is still a great choice for those in need of power and space.

11/5/17: I recently sold my car and have decided to replace it with a Honda CRV.5/3/17: Since my previous review, I have had a few issues with my previous vehicle which had 68,000 miles on it. I had to discuss two oil leaks on two different occasions and last month the engine seized up and the dealer found metal shavings in the oil pan. I had to replace the entire engine which cost over $10,000. Although I bought my Veracruz as a 2-year-old vehicle with 20,000 miles on it, I found that there were a few things about the vehicle that will keep me from buying another Hyundai. However, I have not needed to have the car into the shop very often. I have found that you get what you pay for. First, the car was modeled after a Lexus RX, meaning Hyundai used the RX as the standard for the product. A few years into ownership, I received a recall from Hyundai that there was an oil leak on my car and that it had to be repaired. Although having an oil leak on a car at less than 50,000 miles is unheard of, the dealership replaced the defective gasket with the same gasket system, which proceeded to leak. Hyundai has not redesigned the defective part. The new gasket seems to have fixed the problem. Also, the driver seat is wearing very fast (poor material quality). There is a clanking noise when I put the car in reverse (transmission problems??). I'm going to go back to my Japanese imports. While they are not perfect, I haven't experienced problems like this in 25 years of ownership of Toyotas and Hondas.

This vehicle handles excellently and is very quiet while driving. It also handles corners and turns with precision. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.

After over 1yr I have 14K on my '08 Veracruz Limited. The vehicle has been nearly flawless! Nothing has gone wrong - not even minor problems. The interior still looks new even with kids. The interior layout is completely intuitive and the best I have had on any vehicle. A minor complaint is acceleration from a stop. But, to my surprise, using premium fuel does improve this problem a bit. The interior space is exceptional. We cart 2 kids with child seats and gear and the VC has ample room. Ride comfort for long trips is great. My wife's vehicle is an '08 Lexus RX350 and I can say the 2 are fairly comparable. We usually take the VC for trips because it has more storage space and a 3rd row.

I'm thrilled with my Veracruz so far! I took a chance on this purchase, as I had always been biased against Hyundai until they came out with the Genesis sedan. My last three vehicles were a Mercedes M Class, VW Passat, and Infiniti G35. I was tired of dealing with premium fuel, quirky problems, and high repair costs. I knew I wanted a crossover with power, bang for my buck, and reliability. A co-worker of mine has a Veracruz, and once I saw the interior, I decided to test drive it against the Pilot, Highlander LTD, and Traverse. After the test drive, I loved it above all the others. The ride is smooth as silk, the interior is class-leading for the price, it's very quiet, and I find it much more comfortable than my previous vehicles.

I am thoroughly impressed with my new Hyundai, despite only having it for a week and driving less than 500 miles. The ride is incredibly quiet and the luxury touches add to the overall experience. The vehicle has plenty of room and the power is more than adequate. Additionally, the mileage is better than what was posted on the sticker. The comfort level is exceptional. Although I experienced some rear end noise, I was able to fix it with a simple $5 can of undercoat. The paint, interior, and exterior joints are all in good condition, indicating that the vehicle is built to a high standard. As someone who has previously owned three Highlanders, I never thought I would consider purchasing a Hyundai, but I am pleasantly surprised with my decision.

The car is fantastic in terms of comfort and amenities, especially for a 2010 model. I have taken it on long trips and it has performed flawlessly in many aspects, including road noise and acceleration. Gas consumption is normal for a 3.8L engine if you drive responsibly. The only downside is the driving range, which is around 250 miles. It would be great if the gas tank could be larger. However, the car's reliability is extremely high, and it offers great comfort and spaciousness. Compared to my Highlander, it beats it hands down in terms of value and comfort. As of this review update, I still own the car and it is still a pleasure to drive. The only issue is that the design for avoiding sun reflection and dashboard illumination in daytime driving could have been better. UPDATE: As of today, December 19th, 2016, this car is still performing flawlessly on both good and bad roads, in good and bad weather. I had to replace the brake lights myself, but all other lights have worked since the day I bought the car. Many times I have had to travel long distances at night, and there have been no problems. I use Mobil One Synthetic and I am seeing more and more of this model car and year on the roads. I asked one owner as we parked at Costco together, and he is as delighted as I am. I would buy this car again if they bring it back. I have now replaced the belt, coolant, brakes, tires, and battery, and this car moves with plenty of power coupled with comfort. Truly amazing. Update Dec 19, 2017: This car is still amazing. It rides more comfortably than many newer cars. The only problem is the combination turn/lights lever combo, as the switch for lights is affected by the turn motion. However, if set to auto-light, there are no problems at all. I am very happy with this car's overall performance and refuse to sell it. It is very stable on the road and extremely comfortable on long trips, like driving almost 600 miles in one trip. Love it.
