2011 Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.
Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.
The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.
In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

- Electrical Glitches: Electrical glitches, including problems with power windows and door locks, have been occasional concerns in the Honda Insight.
- Dipped Beam Headlight Malfunction: A recall was issued for the 2010-2011 Honda Insight due to a dipped beam headlight malfunction, which required replacing the headlight switch with a newly modified switch and installing a new terminal for the dipped beam operation within the wiring harness.
- Rough Idle: The 2011 Honda Insight may experience a rough idle due to a faulty EVAP emission control solenoid, which can be fixed by removing the faulty solenoid and installing a new one.
- Check Engine Light and Stuck Fuel Cap: The 2011 Honda Insight may have issues with the fuel cap getting stuck, causing the check engine light to illuminate. This can be resolved by installing a new filler neck.

- AC Malfunction: Road debris can cause damage to the AC condenser, requiring replacement.
- Surge While Accelerating: The 2011 Honda Insight may experience a surge while accelerating lightly due to clogged up EGR passages, which can be resolved by cleaning or replacing the passages.
- Engine Not Restarting: The Auto-Stop function on the 2011 Honda Insight may stop working, requiring the installation of a new battery.
- Battery Light: The battery warning light may come on in the 2011 Honda Insight, indicating a need for a new hybrid battery. If the car is still under warranty, Honda should replace the battery for free.
- Check Emission Light Illuminated: The check emission light may illuminate in the 2011 Honda Insight, which can be resolved by checking and replacing spark plugs, pistons, and rings if necessary.
These issues should be considered when purchasing a used 2011 Honda Insight. It is recommended to consult with a knowledgeable mechanic familiar with the Insight's unique hybrid system for a thorough inspection before making a purchase.

- VIN: JHMZE2H5XBS
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I GOT A NOTICE THAT BOTH AIRBAGS ON MY CAR WERE FAULTY AND THAT HONDA WOULD FIX THEM FOR FREE. THE PARTS DIDN'T COME IN FOR 3 OR 4 MONTHS. I WAS COMMUTING 400 MILES A WEEK FOR WORK AND ASKED THEM TO PROVIDE A RENTAL CAR FOR ME UNTIL THEN. THEY WOULD FURNISH THE CAR BUT I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE INSURANCE ON IT. THEY TOLD ME TO GET IT INSURED BY MY OWN PERSONAL AUTO INSURANCE COMPANY. MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT DO THAT AND NEITHER WOULD ANY OTHER. SINCE I COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY THE $20.00 A DAY FOR THE RENTAL CAR INSURANCE I HAD TO JUST TAKE MY CHANCES OF SERIOUS INJURY OR EVEN DEATH IN THE EVENT OF MY AIRBAGS GOING OFF. MY 82 YEAR OLD MOTHER RODE IN THAT CAR TO HER DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENTS AND THE GROCERY. WE BOTH HAVE COPD AND I HAVE A PACEMAKER. THE STRESS THE SITUATION CAUSED WAS STAGGERING AND CERTAINLY NOT GOOD FOR EITHER OF US. WHAT GOOD DID IT DO FOR HONDA TO INFORM ME OF THE RECALL IF THEY COULDN'T FIX IT RIGHT AWAY AND WOULD NOT PAY THE INSURANCE SO I COULD GET A RENTAL CAR? I GUESS THE SICK AND ELDERLY DON'T MATTER TO A BIG COMPANY LIKE HONDA.

- Summary: TAKATA RECALL OUR FAMILY VEHICLE HAD A SAFETY RECALL ON FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER'S AIR BAGS. WE RECEIVED A LOANER CAR FROM UNIVERSITY HONDA DEALERSHIP IN DAVIS, CA, ON 07.20.2016 UNTIL OUR VEHICLE WAS FIXED. WE DROPPED OUR VEHICLE AT THE DEALERSHIP ON 07.30.2016 AND DEALER, ON TWO OCCASIONS, VERBALLY AND IN WRITING, CONFIRMED THAT BOTH AIR BAGS WOULD BE FIXED THAT DAY. HOWEVER, THEY ONLY CORRECTED THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG AND REQUESTED WE RETURN THE LOANER CAR AS OUR VEHICLE, ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, WAS NOW SAFE TO DRIVE. WE EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS OUR FAMILY CAR AND WE UTILIZE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BUT TO NO AVAIL. WE ARE NOW DRIVING OUR VEHICLE WHICH IS UNSAFE FOR THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER AND POSSIBLY OTHER OCCUPANTS IN CASE THE PASSENGER'S AIR BAG DEPLOYS. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH HONDA USA SINCE 07.30.2016. IT TOOK THEM ALMOST FIVE WEEKS TO RESPOND TO MY CLAIM THAT THEY INITIALLY STATED WOULD TAKE THEM ONLY A WEEK TO REPLY. THEY DENIED MY CLAIM, 04845132, STATING THAT I DO NOT NEED TO UTILIZE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BASED ON THE SIZE OF MY FAMILY. THIS IS A VERY WEAK EXCUSE ON THEIR PART AS THE VEHICLE I PURCHASED WAS AND IS INTENDED TO BE UTILIZED BY FIVE PEOPLE NOT FOUR. IT SEEMS HONDA IS CHOOSING PROFITS OVER PASSENGER SAFETY. WHAT I WOULD LIKE HONDA TO DO IS OFFER ME A FREE RENTAL UNTIL MY VEHICLE IS FULLY SAFE FOR ALL PASSENGERS.

- Summary: THIS MORNING (AUG 6, 2016), MYSELF AND MY DAD MET WITH AN ACCIDENT AND WAS DRIVING HONDA INSIGHT 2011 LX MODEL. NOTE THAT MY DAD WAS SITTING IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. LET ME DESCRIBE THE ACCIDENT. I WAS ABOUT TO PARK MY CAR IN FRONT OF SPROUTS GROCERY STORE IN THE PARKING AVAILABLE SPOT JUST FACING SPROUTS. SO YOU CAN IMAGINE THAT I WAS ABOUT TO PARK MY CAR AND THE SPEED WAS AROUND 5MPH. ALL OF A SUDDEN, I COULD FEEL MY INSIGHT ENGINE EXPERIENCING SUDDEN ACCELERATION AUTOMATICALLY AND THEN I WAS TRYING TO APPLY THE LEG BRAKE TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T SPEED UP. SUDDENLY, THE INSIGHT STARTED SPEEDING UP AND DIDN'T STOP EVEN AFTER SLAMMING ON THE BRAKE AND IT JUMPED ON THE PARKING CURB AND FINALLY HIT THE CONCRETE PILLAR IN FRONT OF SPROUTS RESULTING IN DEPLOYING THE DRIVER AIR-BAG AND THE PASSENGER AIR-BAGS. MY WINDSHIELD DEVELOPED A DEEP CRACK AND I BELIEVE MY CAR IS GOING TO BE TOTALLED. WITH THAT, IT DIDN'T STOP, AFTER HITTING SO HARD THE CONCRETE WALL, REMEMBER THE CAR WAS STILL IN DRIVE MODE AND NOT IN REVERSE MODE, ALL OF A SUDDEN, THE CAR STARTED MOVING BACKWARDS AND EVEN DIDN'T STOP AFTER SLAMMING ON THE LEG BRAKE. THEN I CAME OUT OF THE SHOCK AND APPLIED MY HAND BRAKE AND TURN OFF THE IGNITION TO STOP THE CAR MOVING BACKWARDS. LUCKILY, THIS CRASH DIDN'T CAUSE ANY BODILY INJURY TO ANY THIRD PARTIES BUT I HAD SOME BRUISES ON MY RIGHT ARM DEVELOPED DUE TO SOME METAL PIECES FROM THE TAKATA AIR-BAG.

I've owned several cars in the past, but my daily driver is this one to avoid putting too many miles on my sports cars. My 2010 Insight was bought secondhand with about 60-65k miles, and currently has 288,000 miles. During that time, it has only ever suffered from an AC compressor clutch failure, which was easily fixed by replacing the compressor for a few hundred dollars. I've also replaced consumables, fluids, and items like shocks/struts/serpentine belt (once…still haven’t changed any hoses that I can recall.) I might have done tie rod ends while it was in the shop for shocks/struts (only because they had lots of miles and I found a set of shocks/struts at a close out price.) This vehicle is the most reliable one I've ever owned. It never breaks down and is super simple and cheap to maintain. My daughter even changed the transmission fluid when she was 7! It still neither leaks nor consumes any fluids. I've used it to haul more building supplies, lumber, and sod than I expect most pickup trucks do over their lifetimes. Oh, and it still gets 40-45 mpg (more in city driving, if carefully driven). It may be slow and boring, but as an inexpensive appliance for transportation, it is the best I've ever seen.____Update: 344k miles now. It has an intermittent fault on the ABS/TC/stability control, but you don't need it much with only 98 hp. Otherwise, it still has no issues. It consumes about a half quart of oil every 10k.

We've had it since it was new and now just over 30K miles. It's such a fun car to drive! We use it as an urban around town commuter car with occasional highway trips and consistently get 39-40 mpg. Even though we're all very tall, we fit fine in the front seat, but adults might find the back a bit tight. We really appreciate Honda's reliability, as we've had no mechanical issues whatsoever.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We purchased our Insight back in May 2009, as a 2010 model, and have driven it for 69,000 miles as of September 10, 2014. We are happy to report that we have had absolutely no warranty issues and have only had to replace the tires and wiper blades! While the rear seat may be a bit small for adults, we find it comfortable enough for us senior citizens, especially on our frequent 675 mile one-way trips to see our grandkids. We are also thrilled with the gas mileage, which averages at 40mpg in our town with a stoplight on every corner and 46 mpg on the highway at 65-70 mph. Overall, we find this to be an extremely reliable car, as we expected from Honda, and plan to keep it well past 100,000 miles.

I can tell you that I absolutely love my Honda Insight EX in polished metal. It's getting me better than 40 MPG and what I really appreciate is how well it drives. The hatch feature and the styling are also great. The Insight is just sharp and it works nicely. I'm a big fan of the ECO feature - when you stop in traffic it just stops! I did try the Prius but I found the Insight to be more fun. Plus, the Insight EX is a much better value. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with my choice.

I'm so glad I bought this fully equipped 2010 model as a Honda Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle with 42K. I wanted to add to my Honda family since my Element is getting up there in mileage at 188K, and I needed a fuel-efficient car for commuting to work.

The Battery/IMA is not functioning as expected. Despite visiting 5 dealerships more than 10 times, the issue has not been resolved. Honda is aware of the problem, but has not yet offered a solution. The fuel efficiency of the car is impressive, with an average of 35 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway, comparable to that of a regular Civic with an MSRP of 15k. The car's paint job could be improved. The car may experience some difficulty changing gears and accelerating on steep inclines. As with any vehicle, regular maintenance is important to ensure optimal performance.

I noticed that the car may not pay for itself in 10 years. Additionally, the car may not be the best fit for taller individuals as the headroom is limited. The back seat may also be a bit cramped for teenagers due to the sloping roof and limited leg room. The interior has a plastic feel to it and only has one removable drink holder that can hold two small cups. The fabric may also be prone to staining due to its brownish-gray color. It's important to be careful when leaning on the car as well. However, I also considered the Honda Fit as an option. It's a more affordable option that gets similar gas mileage and has a similar size and plastic feel. Ultimately, it may be a better choice for those looking to save some money.

My Insight has been with me for almost a year now. I appreciate the cool gadgets and the interior lights that add to the overall experience. However, I have noticed some issues with the car's build quality. The car seems to be falling apart easily, and I can disassemble it without much effort. The paint job is subpar, and the car struggles to slow down smoothly. Additionally, the back ceiling is too low. Despite these issues, I am confident in my ability to address them and improve my driving experience.
Quincy Rowe 2024-04-11
The car's design and performance do not meet my expectations. The steering wheel is uncomfortable to hold, and the car struggles on inclines. Additionally, the mileage is not significantly better than traditional gas cars. However, I do appreciate the cost savings on gas. The backseat is not spacious, but it can accommodate groceries. The split back window design is impractical. Although my husband liked the car, I regret not test driving it before purchasing. The stereo's sound quality is not suitable for music enthusiasts.

It's great to hear that you've owned your 2010 Insight for three years and have put 37,000 miles on it! From what you've said, it sounds like a reliable small car that's perfect for commuting back and forth. It's impressive that you're getting about 50 mpg and that it's ideal for your needs. While it may ride a little hard and be short on sound insulation, it's great to know that it's been a good purchase for you. Passing it on to your children and getting another one in the last year of production sounds like a great plan!
