1982 Honda Civic problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 1982 Honda Civic problems
The Honda Civic, produced since the early 1970s, is a classic compact vehicle known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it has common problems that owners may encounter. While the focus is on the 1982 Honda Civic, many of these issues span various model years.
- Airbag Indicator Glitch Triggered by Sensor Malfunction: A notable number of Honda Civic models, including the 1982 version, have experienced an issue where the airbag light turns on due to a malfunctioning occupant position sensor. This problem can be traced back to 1996 and persists up to 2016 model years. Honda has issued a recall for affected models, offering a replacement of the faulty sensor at no cost. However, the average cost of diagnosing this problem is between $88 and $111.
- Vibrations and Rattles from Faulty Engine Mounts: Engine mount issues are the second most cited concern among Civic owners, affecting various model years, including the 1982 version. This problem manifests as vibrations, roughness, and rattles, particularly noticeable when the car is in reverse. Replacing the faulty engine mounts is usually the solution to this unsettling issue.
- Intermittent Failure of Power Window Switches: Another frequent complaint involves the power window switches, which may intermittently fail, preventing the windows from opening or closing. This issue has been reported across various Civic model years, including the 1982 version. When addressing this issue, it's crucial to distinguish between a failing switch and a defective window motor to avoid unnecessary replacements.
These common problems in Honda Civics can appear in any version of the car, whether it has very little mileage or has been in your driveway for a decade. However, these faults are most likely to appear in the older, unreliable versions of the car.
