The GMC Hummer EV (badged as HEV) is a line of battery electric heavy-duty vehicles produced by General Motors since 2021, and sold under the GMC marque. The Hummer EV is offered in two variants: a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle (SUV), unveiled in October 2020 and April 2021 respectively.

Weighing roughly 10,000 pounds (4,500 kg), the Hummer EV is among the heaviest consumer automobiles currently sold in the United States. Its size, mass, and acceleration have led to concerns about the danger it poses to other road users in the event of collisions, as well as its efficiency and environmental impact.

Overview

The Hummer EV is assembled in Detroit and has batteries produced by LG Chem in South Korea, with plans to later start producing batteries in the U.S. It is intended that SUV models produced from 2024 onward will be able to charge other electric vehicles using an onboard 19.2 kWh charger.

The electric motors' torque profile makes it suited for towing trailers. It includes various technologies, such as cameras that allow the driver to see underneath it and four-wheel steering. The SUV variant is rated to tow up to 7,500 pounds (3,400 kg) and seats five passengers with 35.9 cubic feet (1,020 L) of cargo space behind the rear seats and 81.8 cubic feet (2,320 L) with the back seats folded down.

The pickup truck variant has a longer wheelbase than the SUV. The pickup variant has a 5-foot (1.5 m) high loadbed with a payload capacity of 1,300 pounds (590 kg) as well as a 11.3-cubic-foot (320 L) front trunk. The front trunk on both models is also intended to store the four removable roof panels when needed. It has eighteen cameras installed, as well as front-and-rear pedestrian alerts designed to aid drivers' situational awareness. These accompany numerous other driver-assistance features such as automatic braking and blind-spot warnings.

It weighs 4.5 short tons (4.1 t), with the battery weighing almost 3,000 pounds (1,400 kg). With a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,400 pounds (4,700 kg), it is classified as a class 3 medium-duty truck in the United States.

Common Gmc Hummer ev problems

The GMC Hummer EV, a high-priced electric truck, has been found to have a problem with the driver-side A-pillar leaking water, which could render the door switches inoperable.

Another issue that has been reported is that the Hummer EV might run into some problems if it gets wet. Water leaks into places it shouldn’t, and a few electrical gremlins will pop up. The NHTSA has sent out a Technical Service Bulletin regarding the Hummer EV, which can suffer electrical issues if water gets where it isn’t supposed to. The reality is that the issue stems from a problem with the Hummer’s build quality. One area beneath the windshield and near the a-pillar is not properly sealed. If water enters through here, it could leak onto a connector which could corrode the terminals of the connector. Water leaking through that small hole could result in the controls for the driver’s side window, mirrors, and door locks malfunctioning. Or it could even get annoyingly worse. Some customers may also report unwanted activation of the theft alarm system, or random messages on the DIC such as “service latch” the report warns.

These problems are concerning, especially for a vehicle of this price range. The Hummer EV was developed quickly, and the battery tech was done before the Hummer itself was even in development. This could be one of the reasons for the electrical issues that the vehicle is facing. It is essential that GM addresses these issues promptly to ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers.

Gmc Hummer ev 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • VIN: 1GT40FDA9NU
  • Components: SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: Same situation occurred twice. I was in the car at a red light. Car had been stopped for about a minute. Was on a slight decline, engine brake was engaged to hold car in position. Car was stationary completely. Suddenly tons of warning lights flash on the dash board 'One pedal driving unavailable', 'Service ESC', 'Service trailer brake system', 'Service active steering system', '4wd unavailable', service driver assist system , 'Speed limited to 36 mph'. First time this happened was June 2023. Dealer was unable to find the source of the problem but reported that the car was working fine and gave it back to me. The second time was a 10/1/2024. I was able to drive slowly to a parking lot, turn the car off, wait a bit and turn it back on which seemed to reset the warnings. Car is currently at a different dealer and they tell me that unless it happens while they are in the car, they cannot diagnose anything. If this were to happen while driving, it could be very dangerous as the Hummer is a very large heavy vehicle so to lose driving systems in motion is quite a scary thing. Having it happen while stopped is bad since the car doesn't operate normally, steering is erratic and the suspension controls non-existent which impacts safety even with speed limited to 36. The car is available to be inspected as needed.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-20
  • Date Complaint: 2023-04-20
  • VIN: 1GT40FDA0NU
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My hummer has been nothing short of a nightmare. Been towed in for service and delivered to the dealer for repair 10 times now and the result is continuously the same problems. Having no date on battery replacement and constant warnings on the dash has brought to the point of it being unsafe for me and my family to utilize. It was recently in the GMC shop at Marquardt GMC for three weeks displaying over a dozen codes of issues. Due to lack of training the dealership mechanics are attempting to do repairs over the phone with GMC. Since getting it back last week all the codes are present again and new issues have developed. I really wanted the truck and was gauged upon purchase by the dealership paying over $200k. My initial intention was to purchase for a family member whom is in need and could take advantage of the autonomous driving. Myself and my family are not even comfortable to the point my wife won't allow our children in the truck so we never took action of helping another member of the family
