Ford Tempo

Why did Ford discontinue the Tempo?

As the 1990s progressed, consumer preferences began shifting towards larger vehicles, and Ford made the strategic decision to discontinue the Tempo and Topaz models.

What car replaced the Ford Tempo?

For the 1995 model year, the Tempo/Topaz four-door sedan was replaced by the Ford Contour (and Mercury Mystique), developed from the Ford Mondeo; the two-door Tempo was not directly replaced.

Why won't my 93 Ford Tempo start?

The most common reasons a Ford Tempo won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

What is the Ford equivalent of the Mercury Topaz?

The Ford Tempo and its twin, the Mercury Topaz, are compact cars that were produced by the Ford Motor Company for model years 1984 to 1994. They were downsized successors to the boxy Ford Fairmont and Mercury Zephyr twins.

Latest negative Ford Tempo car reviews

  1. Myrl Prosacco 2025-05-07

    Vehicle year: 1991

Your car sounds great! Despite some minor issues like the AC and alternator problems, it seems to be very durable. Even after going airborne and getting sideswiped, it only suffered minor damage. It's impressive that it still has a couple of years left in it. Keep up the good maintenance!

  2. Nick Kuvalis 2025-05-05

    Vehicle year: 1993

Happy birthday to me! Two years ago, I treated myself to a car for just $500. It had 144k miles on it, but now it has 156k. Although the top gloss paint has worn off and there have been some issues with the brake lines, starter, battery, e-brake cable, and exhaust system (which I've had to fix twice), it still gets me where I need to go. Sure, the back window doesn't work and one of the power locks is broken, but it's good on gas. It does shake a bit at 55 mph, which isn't great in the winter and it gets stuck sometimes, but overall it's been a great ride!

  3. Mustafa Marvin 2025-04-28

    Vehicle year: 1994

I've had this car for two years now and it has been great so far! I bought it for $1200 with 156,000 kms. It now has 230,000 kms and it's still going strong. The only problems I've had with this car have been minor. I've done regular oil changes and the tie rod ends have had to be replaced, but the parts don't cost too much. It's gotten me to a lot of places and I can say that it's a reliable car. It's not a luxury car by any means, but it is a good cheap car. I've never had any problems with it starting up in the cold weather either. I'd definitely recommend the Tempo for anyone looking for a cheap car!

  4. Rocio Wisozk 2025-04-18

    Vehicle year: 1994

Hey there! It seems like the take off is a bit slow, isn't it?

  5. Ewell Ferry 2025-03-27

    Vehicle year: 1994

I love my Tempo! It was passed down to me by my Grandpa, who gave it to me for free. It was originally my Grandma's car, but she barely drove it, so it's still in great condition. When I received it last July, it only had 44,500 miles on it, and now it's only at 50,100 miles. Although it has a few small dings from the parking lot, the body is almost mint. It sat on a gravel driveway for almost 7 years, only being driven a couple of times a month, but everything still works pretty well. It has all of the original parts except the battery, brakes, and tires, and everything seems to be holding up fairly well. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it, even though it's an old Ford.

    Vehicle year: 1991

Your car seems to be running well, but you mentioned that the transmission went out at 165000. However, you replaced it and it still runs fine. I understand that you are trying to sell it now due to lack of space where you live.

  2. Jaylin Gleason 2025-05-03

    Vehicle year: 1992

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you how much I love my car. I bought it from a friend last November for only 250 dollars, and it's been such a great investment. Even though it had 132,000 miles on it when I got it, it was in pretty good condition. Since then, I've put another 28,000 miles on it and have had to replace a few parts like the starter, radiator, hubs, and water pump. Despite all that, the car still runs great! It's not the most powerful car out there, but I fell in love with it instantly and it's been so reliable. I just wanted to share my positive experience with you!

  3. Jayde Ritchie 2025-04-16

    Vehicle year: 1992

I have owned this car for years and I absolutely love it! Despite my constant abuse, it has never let me down. The only issue I've had is with the 3-speed automatic transmission, but I'm so attached to the car that I'm planning to swap it out for a manual transmission as soon as I can. I even bought a '91 Tempo GLS 4cyl/5-speed to drive in the meantime. I've taken it on about 20 cross-country trips and it has always performed admirably. Despite the 3-speed/V6 combo, it gets respectable MPG as well. It currently has just under 200K on it.

  4. Reuben White 2025-04-13

    Vehicle year: 1991

I've owned my 1989 Tempo AWD for a year now, and it has never given me any trouble. The previous owners, who I know well, also never experienced any major issues. It's always started up for me and proven to be incredibly reliable. In fact, I would say it's one of the most dependable models from the 1980s. Even after sitting untouched for eleven months, I returned to find it started right up - a testament to its quality. It's an excellent first car and perfect for daily driving. While the fuel economy is average, the reliability and durability are outstanding. The styling is good, power is slightly below average, and the quality is simply exceptional.

  5. Edison Schmitt 2025-04-05

    Vehicle year: 1991

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 91 Tempo. Despite having a stalling problem when I first bought it, I found that driving it regularly helped keep it in line. Overall, it's been a good car with a reliable motor. While it may not be the most powerful or attractive car out there, it certainly gets the job done!
