1993 Saab 9000 problems

saab logo

The Saab 9000 is a car produced by the Swedish company Saab from 1984 to 1998. Representing the company's foray into the executive car scene, it was developed as a result of the successes of the turbocharged 99 and 900 models. The 9000 remained in production until May 1998 and it was replaced by the Saab 9-5 in late 1997, although some final cars were produced into 1998. The Saab 9000 was only available with petrol engines, in two different 5-door hatchback designs or as a 4-door notchback.

Saab designed the 9000 as part of the Type Four platform in conjunction with the Italian automaker Fiat Automobiles. Fiat retailed similar derivative versions as the more basic Fiat Croma, the luxury-themed Lancia Thema, and the sports-oriented Alfa Romeo 164. Unlike the 164, which shares only the chassis, the Croma and Thema are outwardly similar to the 9000. As such, much of the bodywork appeared interchangeable between the 9000, Croma and Thema; for example, the doors. However, because Saab fitted heavier side impact protection they will not fit. Fiat had designed the Croma with no consideration of American crash test requirements, which forced Saab to strengthen the body by fitting various reinforcements. Thus, the front of the Saab is radically different from the Italian siblings due to the much improved crash protection. Only seven parts are actually interchangeable. The 9000's body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and Saab designer Björn Envall.

Despite being shorter overall than the 900 which was still produced in parallel, the 9000 has a longer wheelbase and greater interior space with 3.5 cubic metres (120 cu ft) of interior space 0.67 cubic feet (0.019 m3) in the boot, 1.6 cubic metres (57 cu ft) with rear seats folded), qualifying as an EPA-rated large car, a distinction shared only with the contemporary Rolls-Royce in America. This was achieved by installing the engine transversely to the direction of travel in the Saab 9000 (instead longitudinally as in the Saab 900). Unlike the 900 the 9000 kept the ignition switch in the more conventional steering column position rather than between the front seats. The inspiration for the seats was taken by Björn Envall from The Muppet Show's Pigs in Space, a sketch by the late puppeteer Jim Henson.

In total, 503,087 Saab 9000s were manufactured. These are divided into: 216,385 Saab 9000 CC (MY 1985–1991), 174,525 Saab 9000 CS (MY 1992–1998), 112,177 Saab 9000 CD (MY 1988–1997).

Are Saab 9000s reliable?

9000 Aero is the best car Saab has ever made

Very reliable and can easily last 300,000-500,000 miles. Engine is bulletproof - change the oil every 3,000 miles (regular oil) or 6,000 miles (synthetic) and the base is good for at least 300k.

How good was the Saab 9000?

Good, old-fashioned 4-speed automatic does what you want and doesn't 'hunt'. Full-on 2.3 turbo Carlsson and Aero puts out 225bhp, which is very nearly too much. The more powerful turbos grip and handle best on Goodyear F1's or Toyo Proxes tyres. Ride quality a bit firm, but made up for by the excellent seats.

What is a Saab 9000 worth?

A: The average price of a Saab 9000 is $10,197.

How safe is a Saab 9000?

Saab's 9000 and 900 models were given top ratings in both of the surveys, consolidating their reputation as two of the safest cars on the road.

1993 Saab 9000 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1993 Saab 9000.

1999-05-06
  • Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. MOISTURE CAN ENTER THE AIR BAG INFLATABLE RESTRAINT ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) AND CAUSE CORROSION ON PORTIONS OF THE ECM PRINTER CIRCUIT BOARDS.
  • Consequence: THIS CORROSION CAN POSSIBLY CREATE OPEN CONNECTIONS IN CIRCUITS WHICH CONTROL THE RESTRAINT DEPLOYMENT, POSSIBLY CAUSING INADVERTENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE EXTERIOR OF THE ECM. IF THERE IS NO INDICATION OF MOISTURE, A COVER WILL BE INSTALLED OVER THE ECM. IF THERE IS INDICATION OF MOISTURE, THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE ECM AND INSTALL A COVER OVER THE NEW ECM.
1995-03-29
  • Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: MOISTURE CAN FOLLOW THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS AND ENTER THE PRESSURE SWITCH CONNECTOR CAUSING CORROSION AND MALFUNCTION OF THE SWITCH.
  • Consequence: THE CORROSION CAUSES A DETERIORATION OF THE ELECTRICALSWITCH CONNECTION AND CAN RESULT IN FALSE ILLUMINATION OF ABS AND/OR THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS AND/OR THE LOSS OF POWER ASSISTANCE BECAUSE OF NO HYDRAULIC PUMPOPERATION. LOSS OF POWER ASSIST INCREASES THE DRIVER'S BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT REQUIRED FOR STOPPING WHICH CAN RESULT IN EXTENDED BRAKING DISTANCES.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE ABS PRESSURE SWITCH TERMINALS FOR CORROSION AND INSTALL A SHRINK HOSE TO THE WIRING HARNESS TO AVOID MOISTURE ENTERING THE CONNECTION. PRESSURE SWITCHES WITH CORRODED CONNECTORS WILL BE REPLACED.
1994-07-08
  • Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM
  • Summary: DURING LOW ENERGY FRONTAL IMPACT COLLISIONS, THE FRONT CROSSMEMBER CAN CONTACT THE METAL TUBING PORTION OF THE COOLER HOSE ASSEMBLY; AND/OR THE HOSE ASSEMBLY CAN BREAK AND LEAK OIL ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST MANIFOLD OR THE TURBOCHARGER.
  • Consequence: OIL LEAKING ON THESE HOT ENGINE SURFACES CAN IGNITE AND CAUSE A VEHICULAR FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PROTECTIVE COVER WHICH WILL PROTECT THE COOLER AND HOSES FROM OTHER STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS IN LOW ENERGY FRONT IMPACTS.
1994-06-09
  • Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: A NUMBER OF BRAKE LIGHT SWITCHES HAVE AN OVAL-SHAPED PISTON WHICH CAN GET STUCK UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS. OTHER SWITCHES WERE MOUNTED SO THAT BOTH LOCKING TABS ARE NOT COMPLETELY ENGAGED IN THE MOUNTING BRACKET. IF ONE SIDE IS NOT ENGAGED, THE SWITCH IS MISALIGNED WITH THE PEDAL MECHANISM AND CAN BIND THE PISTON MOVEMENT, WHICH CAN CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO STICK IN THE "OFF" OR "ON" POSITION.
  • Consequence: THIS RESULTS IN EITHER THE BRAKE LIGHTS REMAINING ON CONSTANTLY OR THE BRAKE LIGHTS NOT ILLUMINATING WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THIS RESULTS IN INACCURATE SIGNALS OF BRAKE OPERATION TO OTHER VEHICLE OPERATORS, AND COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT BRAKE LIGHT SWITCHES. FOR VEHICLES WITH THE OVAL-SHAPED PISTON AND FOR VEHICLES WITH MISALIGNED BRAKE LIGHT SWITCHES, THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WILL BE REPLACED.
1994-02-03
  • Manufacturer: SAAB CARS USA, INC.
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THE FUEL FILLER AND TANK VENTILATION HOSES MAY DEVELOP CRACKS UNDER THE SECURING HOSE CLAMPS, RESULTING IN FUEL LEAKAGE.
  • Consequence: FUEL LEAKS MAY RESULT IN A FIRE IF AN IGNITION SOURCEIS PRESENT.
  • Remedy: THE FUEL FILLER AND FUEL VENTILATION HOSES WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEW HOSES. THE FIVE SECURING HOSE CLAMPS WILL BE REPLACED BY A NEW TYPE WITH A SHIELD THAT PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE HOSE WHEN TIGHTENED.

Negative 1993 Saab 9000 car reviews

  1. Henry Weimann 2024-10-22

Since I purchased the car, I have driven 8000 miles. I have had to replace the transmission, timing chain, and fuel pump. Unfortunately, the TCS problems are still present. Just a friendly warning to watch out for cars with TCS. On the bright side, it is the fastest four-cylinder car I have ever driven!

  2. Stanley Mosciski 2024-09-11

I paid $3500.00 for this car 15 months ago and I have enjoyed driving it ever since. However, the maintenance costs have exceeded the initial purchase price. Despite numerous repairs, including a new clutch, A/C repairs, and various electrical issues, the car is now experiencing engine problems. Given the high cost of repairs, I have decided not to invest any further in this vehicle. It is unfortunate that the maintenance costs have been so high, but I am confident that I made the right decision in not repairing it.

  3. Esteban Aufderhar 2024-06-05

I would recommend considering other options instead of this one. Saab is no longer in business, which means that parts can be quite expensive. Additionally, my personal experience with a Saab was not great. It seemed like every time I fixed one thing, something else would go wrong. Unfortunately, the car eventually broke down on the highway and caused some damage. While I was able to sell it for scrap, it was still a loss. Just keep in mind that the car also had some issues with the sunroof leaking and needing frequent repairs.

  4. Cleo McLaughlin 2024-02-28

Hi there! I recently purchased a 9000 CSE 5Dr for 5K and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. The Timing belt started to rattle and I had to replace the Catalytic Converter, Rotors, Water Pump, oil sensor, headlight relay and both headlight assemblys. My wife accidentally backed into the right side and a rock hit the left, so those needed to be fixed too. I even spilled coffee on the window control, which cost me $600 to fix. Despite these setbacks, I've only driven it 3800 miles to my house and the train station, which is about 9 miles a day. It was definitely a lesson learned, but the dealer did right by me to an extent. Thanks for listening!

Positive 1993 Saab 9000 car reviews

  1. Madisen Murazik 2024-11-06

    Great cold weather car.

  2. Emiliano Fritsch 2024-10-11

You've got yourself a very solid car with few problems, except for the automatic traction control device which can be a bit of a pain. However, it's not enough to spoil the fun. It's especially a great deal when purchased used, as they have a greater depreciation value than a Volvo.

  3. Adolphus Orn 2024-10-01

I absolutely love the design of the 9000 CSE! It combines the best qualities of many cars and is built to last. The 1993 version (which happens to be my 3rd 9000) is my favorite because of its Traction Control (TCS) and decent glove box. Over the years, Saab has improved the build quality and reliability of these cars. Safety is also a top priority; I was in a serious accident in my '95 and was able to walk away unharmed after the car was T-boned by a minivan. I was so impressed that I immediately bought another Saab (the '93). The service at the used-Saab-only dealer where I've bought them has also been exceptional!

  4. Jaylan Weissnat 2024-09-03

I've owned this car for over a decade and it's been an incredibly reliable and trustworthy companion. Even with over 100,000 miles, it's still going strong. The design is so timeless that people are often surprised to learn it's nearly 11 years old.

  5. Johnpaul Walter 2024-08-09

Very few problems with this vehicle even for its age. Just normal wear and tear. The design is very good overall. I am happy with its performance and power. It would be even nicer if there was a traction control button. With a few upgrades, this would be the perfect vehicle for me, all within the right price range. It holds its own against luxury cars of today.
