Common Ford Freestar problems
The Ford Freestar, a minivan produced between 2004 and 2007, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Two of the most frequently reported issues are EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure.
- EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system in the Ford Freestar is designed to reduce harmful emissions by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine's intake manifold. However, the orifice in the intake manifold, which is responsible for managing the flow of gases, can become clogged with sludge over time.
This issue can lead to several problems, including engine misfires, poor performance, and decreased fuel efficiency. In some cases, the engine may even stall or fail to start altogether. The sludge buildup is often caused by the use of low-quality fuel or a lack of regular maintenance, such as not changing the engine oil or fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer.
To address this issue, the EGR orifice may need to be cleaned or replaced, and the engine may require a thorough inspection to ensure that there is no further damage. Preventive maintenance, such as using high-quality fuel and following the recommended maintenance schedule, can help prevent this issue from occurring in the first place.
- Torque Converter Failure
The torque converter is a critical component of the automatic transmission in the Ford Freestar. It is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission and allowing the vehicle to accelerate smoothly. However, the torque converter in the Freestar has been known to fail prematurely, causing widespread and dangerous transmission problems for owners.
Symptoms of torque converter failure may include difficulty shifting, slipping, shuddering, or jerking during acceleration, and a complete transmission failure. In some cases, the torque converter may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly and time-consuming repair.
The torque converter failure in the Ford Freestar was investigated and eventually recalled, but it is unclear whether the recall covered everyone who was affected. It is important for Freestar owners to be aware of this issue and to have their vehicles inspected regularly to ensure that the torque converter is functioning properly.
In summary, the Ford Freestar has been known to have several common problems, including EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure. These issues can lead to serious engine and transmission problems, and can be costly to repair. Freestar owners are encouraged to follow the recommended maintenance schedule and to be aware of these issues to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.
What was wrong with the Ford Freestar?
FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 FORD FREESTAR AND MERCURY MONTEREY VEHICLES. THE TORQUE CONVERTER OUTPUT SHAFT MAY FAIL. What should you do: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE.
What is the Ford Freestar controversy?
In a class action filed in 2009, the plaintiffs claimed that Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans in 2004, 2005, and 2006 were built with a manufacturing defect in the vehicles' torque converter. In the District of Minnesota, they claimed Ford breached its express and implied warranties.
Is a 2007 Ford Freestar a good car?
The 2007 Ford Freestar offers good looks and strong safety ratings but falls flat when it comes to acceleration, handling, interior design and overall quality. Unfortunate as it is to say, any of its competitors would be a better choice if you're shopping for a minivan.
What happened to the Ford Freestar?
The Freestar and Monterey minivan had nearly the same platform as the Windstar. The Freestar and Monterey minivan didn't sell too well because people were buying SUV's instead. This caused them both to stop being produced. Ford made the Ford Flex in 2008 to replace the Freestar and Monterey minivan.

We are delighted to share that we have 6 grandchildren who love to travel with us. As a result, we have been searching for the perfect minivan for quite some time. In January, we finally found the one we were looking for - a used van with only 33,500 miles on it. We are happy to report that it has been a fantastic purchase so far! The exterior is beautiful, and we especially love the Norsea Blue color. We have taken the kids on several outings and trips, and there is plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable.

This van has plenty of power and is very comfortable and versatile. The fuel economy is fair, but the build quality so far has been good. Our family finds the second row bucket seats to be very convenient. I would strongly recommend the Freestar to anyone looking for a reliable and practical vehicle.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Ford cargo van. I've put 82,000 miles on it and it has been trouble-free! One thing I really appreciate is that Ford corrected the transmission for 2006 and 2007 models, so I haven't had any issues with that. Plus, it's surprisingly quiet inside and drives like a regular passenger van thanks to the full cloth headliner and trim panels all the way back to the tailgate. My family and I even prefer it for vacations because it has more cargo space than a thirsty SUV. And if you're wondering about gas mileage, I get 25 mpg on the freeway if I drive 60, and even at 70mph, it still gets a respectable 23 mpg. Thanks for listening!

As Ford enthusiasts, we are thrilled with the Freestyle as it offers the perfect combination of style and functionality. The fold-down back is a great feature that we absolutely love. We were pleasantly surprised by the heated seats and memory seating, which we never thought we would need, but now can't live without. While the sound system could be better, the CD player works great. However, some stations can be a bit irritating. The heating/AC controls are a bit confusing, and we prefer the simplicity of turn buttons. When driving, we don't want to be distracted by too many buttons. Overall, we are impressed with the handling, body style, and spaciousness of the vehicle. It's perfect for road trips, and we get an impressive 22-23 MPG. Plus, getting in and out is a breeze!

I purchased the 04 Freestar used in October 2009 with 54k miles. Unfortunately, within 3 weeks of having it, the traction control light went on and off at will, mostly staying on. Later on, the AC went out during the summer and I had to get a new AC compressor for $600. Although it was changed, the AC only worked in the front of the van and blew hot air in the back. The mechanic tried to find the problem and changed the orifice tube, which was full of debris, but still no AC in the back. He said that there is likely debris throughout the entire system and would need an entire overhaul to repair the AC in the back. This weekend, the transmission failed and it will cost $2500 to repair. I would advise against purchasing this vehicle.

The 2006 Ford Freestar is an excellent value for the money. You can save about $5000 off the price with Ford rebates and dealer incentives. With the SE appearance package, Advance Trac with reverse sensing and DVD entertainment system, it's an excellent value for under $20k. The only downside is that the 3rd row seat is low to the floor, which may be okay for kids. However, the interior has great styling and storage space.

Although we initially enjoyed the van, it has unfortunately experienced several issues that have significantly impacted its performance. At this point, we are considering our options and may need to explore alternative solutions.

I absolutely adore my 2005 Ford Freestar! My family and I are huge fans of the DVD entertainment system, and my wife especially appreciates the keyless entry system that allows her to start the car and settle into her cozy heated seats. The 6 disk CD changer is also a great feature that I personally enjoy. The rear controls for the air conditioning and audio options give my kids some control over their environment, and the electronic 3 zone climate system is a lifesaver. The car's message system is also a fantastic feature that we all appreciate. However, the power sliding doors and liftgate are the real stars of the show - we use the power liftgate all the time, especially when we're out shopping. It's so convenient to be able to open and close it with just the touch of a button!

As a parent of three young children, I heavily rely on the automatic doors and seating to ensure their safety and comfort. Unfortunately, we experienced repeated issues with the automatic doors during the first two months of ownership, such as opening on their own or not closing when prompted. It was frustrating and inconvenient, and we believe it was due to poor electronics in the vehicle. Our van spent more time in the shop than at our house during those couple of months. However, we were pleased when Ford provided us with another van after acknowledging the issue. I am writing this review to share that the problem has resurfaced on the other passenger door, and we are on our way to get a loaner. While I am surprised to see high reviews from others, I am hopeful that our experience with two lemons is just a fluke.
