Common Ford Freestar problems
The Ford Freestar, a minivan produced between 2004 and 2007, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Two of the most frequently reported issues are EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure.
- EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire
The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system in the Ford Freestar is designed to reduce harmful emissions by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine's intake manifold. However, the orifice in the intake manifold, which is responsible for managing the flow of gases, can become clogged with sludge over time.
This issue can lead to several problems, including engine misfires, poor performance, and decreased fuel efficiency. In some cases, the engine may even stall or fail to start altogether. The sludge buildup is often caused by the use of low-quality fuel or a lack of regular maintenance, such as not changing the engine oil or fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer.
To address this issue, the EGR orifice may need to be cleaned or replaced, and the engine may require a thorough inspection to ensure that there is no further damage. Preventive maintenance, such as using high-quality fuel and following the recommended maintenance schedule, can help prevent this issue from occurring in the first place.
- Torque Converter Failure
The torque converter is a critical component of the automatic transmission in the Ford Freestar. It is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission and allowing the vehicle to accelerate smoothly. However, the torque converter in the Freestar has been known to fail prematurely, causing widespread and dangerous transmission problems for owners.
Symptoms of torque converter failure may include difficulty shifting, slipping, shuddering, or jerking during acceleration, and a complete transmission failure. In some cases, the torque converter may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly and time-consuming repair.
The torque converter failure in the Ford Freestar was investigated and eventually recalled, but it is unclear whether the recall covered everyone who was affected. It is important for Freestar owners to be aware of this issue and to have their vehicles inspected regularly to ensure that the torque converter is functioning properly.
In summary, the Ford Freestar has been known to have several common problems, including EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure. These issues can lead to serious engine and transmission problems, and can be costly to repair. Freestar owners are encouraged to follow the recommended maintenance schedule and to be aware of these issues to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.
What was wrong with the Ford Freestar?
FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 FORD FREESTAR AND MERCURY MONTEREY VEHICLES. THE TORQUE CONVERTER OUTPUT SHAFT MAY FAIL. What should you do: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE.
What is the Ford Freestar controversy?
In a class action filed in 2009, the plaintiffs claimed that Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans in 2004, 2005, and 2006 were built with a manufacturing defect in the vehicles' torque converter. In the District of Minnesota, they claimed Ford breached its express and implied warranties.
Is a 2007 Ford Freestar a good car?
The 2007 Ford Freestar offers good looks and strong safety ratings but falls flat when it comes to acceleration, handling, interior design and overall quality. Unfortunate as it is to say, any of its competitors would be a better choice if you're shopping for a minivan.
What happened to the Ford Freestar?
The Freestar and Monterey minivan had nearly the same platform as the Windstar. The Freestar and Monterey minivan didn't sell too well because people were buying SUV's instead. This caused them both to stop being produced. Ford made the Ford Flex in 2008 to replace the Freestar and Monterey minivan.

If you're in the market for a reliable minivan, you should definitely consider this one. I've looked at other competitors and they're all great, but what ultimately sold me on this one was the price and the positive dealer experience. My second choice would have been the Nissan, followed by the Honda. While I've driven Ford and Nissan products in the past and have had good experiences with them, I simply prefer not to buy a Toyota because their dealerships tend to be less flexible on pricing.

I love this van! It's great for family transportation and also very useful for construction projects. It rides smoothly and has plenty of power. Although I have 65k on the van, I have had a few issues. Fortunately, all of them were covered under warranty. The front brake rotors had to be replaced twice due to warping, the fuel pump had to be replaced because it was squealing, the rear window vent motor had to be replaced, and the catalytic converter had to be replaced. Sometimes, there are funky AdvanceTrak issues and the weatherstrip on the windshield was falling off. I know the AX4N trans is known to have major issues, so I just hope ours lasts. I do all the maintenance myself, including using full syn fluids, changing the transmission every 15k, changing the power steering fluid every year, and changing the coolant, etc.

This has been a good experience for me. Although, I did have a problem with the transmission quitting at about 82,000 miles and it cost me 1,800 to rebuild. I have talked to other owners with the same problem and I think they should consider a recall. I have saved my repair bill. As a senior citizen, I had to borrow money to have it fixed, but overall, I still love the van.

Hi there! I noticed that you purchased a 06 Freestar van back in October 06. It's great to hear that you loved the interior seating arrangements, especially the shoulder and leg room for the first and second rows. Although, I understand that the third row bench folds flat, it's a bit too low when in use. On the bright side, there's lots of cargo room when stored! I also noticed that the engine has lots of torque, but it seems to have been detuned. With a 4.2 L engine, it should give far more than 200 hp. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

We bought our 2006 Ford Freestar used with 45k miles. Since then, we have had one minor and one major repair. The auto sliding door needed a piece replaced, and we had to replace the entire driver's central console due to a failure in the LED communication panel. Although we could have done without it, we needed the odometer to pass state inspection. Other than that, we absolutely love the car! We use it to trailer our 1500 lbs of gear to Cape Cod, and the big high torque engine is simply amazing - always power to spare. The entertainment system with DVD and wireless headsets is a great feature that we love. The car has plenty of room for even the longest trip, and we have even used the trunk as a junior RV for long weekends.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our Ford car. My husband works for Ford, so we decided to buy one. We've been doing everything we're supposed to, like changing the oil, but unfortunately, our warranty has expired. Recently, we had an issue with the fuel gauge and received a fuel comm error that wasn't in the manual. We called around to get prices and found out that the Ford dealership wanted to charge us $400 just for a diagnostic test, not including the cost to fix it. Additionally, the traction control seems to have a mind of its own and only works sometimes. We also have a Honda from 1997, and we haven't had nearly as many problems with it. I really wanted to support Ford since my husband works for them, but we're already considering getting rid of the car. I hope Ford can address these issues soon. Thank you for listening to my experience!

The 2006 Freestar unfortunately shares the same issues as its predecessors, such as transmission and PCM problems, as well as leaking coolant and power steering. Additionally, there were some minor issues with the headrest and CD player, as well as a clicking noise in the right front wheel when backing up and a rattling noise in the fan during idle. Despite these issues, it is worth noting that the vehicle was purchased from a dealer with one owner and had $5500 positive equity. It is important to be aware of these issues when considering this vehicle, but with proper maintenance and care, they can be addressed.

This car has had its fair share of issues. It has had some brake problems, air conditioning failures, and different sensors needing to be replaced. Unfortunately, the transmission has now failed and it would cost more to replace it than the car is worth. Despite these issues, I must say that the interior is quite nice. The seats are comfortable and it has great hauling capacity. However, I understand why Ford no longer makes mini vans. Overall, it has been a bit of a lemon, but it has served its purpose.

The Ford Freestar is a great product! The only thing to keep in mind is that the rear seat is low to the floor, which is designed to allow the seat to fold and fit into the rear cargo space. It's perfect for kids, but may not be the most comfortable for adults on long trips. However, the interior is fantastic, with very comfortable captain's chairs in the second row. Overall, it's a very nice van!

I strongly advise against purchasing a Ford vehicle. My transmission failed at a mere 76,000 miles, resulting in a costly $3,000 replacement at the dealership. Additionally, my trac control light frequently turns on and off without explanation, and I am now faced with a check engine light. Despite my frustration with the numerous repairs required for a vehicle that was not inexpensive, I remain confident in my assessment that there should be a recall on the transmission. It is also worth noting that the vehicle emits an unpleasant noise while in operation.
