Common Ford Freestar problems

The Ford Freestar, a minivan produced between 2004 and 2007, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Two of the most frequently reported issues are EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure.

  1. EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system in the Ford Freestar is designed to reduce harmful emissions by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine's intake manifold. However, the orifice in the intake manifold, which is responsible for managing the flow of gases, can become clogged with sludge over time.

This issue can lead to several problems, including engine misfires, poor performance, and decreased fuel efficiency. In some cases, the engine may even stall or fail to start altogether. The sludge buildup is often caused by the use of low-quality fuel or a lack of regular maintenance, such as not changing the engine oil or fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

To address this issue, the EGR orifice may need to be cleaned or replaced, and the engine may require a thorough inspection to ensure that there is no further damage. Preventive maintenance, such as using high-quality fuel and following the recommended maintenance schedule, can help prevent this issue from occurring in the first place.

  1. Torque Converter Failure

The torque converter is a critical component of the automatic transmission in the Ford Freestar. It is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission and allowing the vehicle to accelerate smoothly. However, the torque converter in the Freestar has been known to fail prematurely, causing widespread and dangerous transmission problems for owners.

Symptoms of torque converter failure may include difficulty shifting, slipping, shuddering, or jerking during acceleration, and a complete transmission failure. In some cases, the torque converter may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly and time-consuming repair.

The torque converter failure in the Ford Freestar was investigated and eventually recalled, but it is unclear whether the recall covered everyone who was affected. It is important for Freestar owners to be aware of this issue and to have their vehicles inspected regularly to ensure that the torque converter is functioning properly.

In summary, the Ford Freestar has been known to have several common problems, including EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure. These issues can lead to serious engine and transmission problems, and can be costly to repair. Freestar owners are encouraged to follow the recommended maintenance schedule and to be aware of these issues to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

What was wrong with the Ford Freestar?

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 FORD FREESTAR AND MERCURY MONTEREY VEHICLES. THE TORQUE CONVERTER OUTPUT SHAFT MAY FAIL. What should you do: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE.

What is the Ford Freestar controversy?

In a class action filed in 2009, the plaintiffs claimed that Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans in 2004, 2005, and 2006 were built with a manufacturing defect in the vehicles' torque converter. In the District of Minnesota, they claimed Ford breached its express and implied warranties.

Is a 2007 Ford Freestar a good car?

The 2007 Ford Freestar offers good looks and strong safety ratings but falls flat when it comes to acceleration, handling, interior design and overall quality. Unfortunate as it is to say, any of its competitors would be a better choice if you're shopping for a minivan.

What happened to the Ford Freestar?

The Freestar and Monterey minivan had nearly the same platform as the Windstar. The Freestar and Monterey minivan didn't sell too well because people were buying SUV's instead. This caused them both to stop being produced. Ford made the Ford Flex in 2008 to replace the Freestar and Monterey minivan.

Latest negative Ford Freestar car reviews

  1. Henderson Lind 2025-06-05

    Vehicle year: 2004

This van has had transmission issues on three separate occasions, which is unacceptable. Despite its attractive appearance, it has proven to be unreliable and requires frequent maintenance. It is not a safe option for regular use.

  2. Tomas Bradtke 2025-06-05

    Vehicle year: 2004

Last September, my wife and I purchased one of these vans. Unfortunately, it has been a nightmare after nightmare. We have spent a whopping $5000 on repairs so far, including the oil cooler lines and cooler, transmission, and the three back spark plugs that were seized in the motor (and they were the original plugs). Then there were the brakes, which were another nightmare and cost us $1900. If you're considering purchasing one of these vans, be warned that they can be quite expensive to maintain. However, if you're still interested, make sure to do your research and find a reliable dealer. Have a great day!

  3. Larue Hackett 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2004

I have had to replace the transmission twice in this vehicle, once at 40,000 miles and again at 79,000 miles. Unfortunately, the torque converter is now malfunctioning once again, and the MPG is quite poor. Despite contacting Ford, the operator did not seem to care about my concerns, even after I expressed my dissatisfaction with their product. It is worth noting that I previously owned a 1994 Windstar (which is essentially the same vehicle) that also required a new transmission at 45,000 miles. While the van does ride nicely at times, I would advise potential buyers to exercise caution.

  4. Guy Waelchi 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2005

At 37000 miles, our 05' Ford Freestar experienced an internal failure of the fluid pump, requiring a new transmission for $3500. Despite the mechanic at Ford (with 22 years experience) never having seen this before, Ford refused to cover the repair due to being 1200 miles over the bumper-to-bumper warranty. It is unfortunate that Ford Motor Co and the dealer have not been able to provide assistance in this matter. However, we remain confident in our decision to never purchase a Ford vehicle again and advise others to consider their options carefully.

  5. Alexzander Luettgen 2025-05-19

    Vehicle year: 2004

Although it initially drove great for the first 2 years, it has unfortunately experienced a number of electrical problems and required a transmission replacement after routine maintenance in August 2006. Over the past 6 months, it has spent most of its time in the shop, with only 2 weeks of driving. As a loyal Ford buyer and the grandson of a former lifetime Ford employee, I am disappointed with this experience. As a military member, it has been particularly difficult since this is my wife's vehicle. I trust that the company will do the right thing and provide a suitable resolution, such as a new vehicle or replacement value towards another vehicle.

  1. Consuelo Schinner 2025-06-02

    Vehicle year: 2006

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Ford Freestar mini-van. After owning a 1995 Windstar 3.8 and trying out other brands like Toyota, Dodge, and Chrysler, my family and I were hesitant to return to Ford. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the new Freestars! They offer so many amenities and have a really smooth ride. We ended up purchasing a used one with 33,500 miles and have been really happy with it. The 4.2 engine provides plenty of power and the leather seats and 6 disc CD changer are great added features. We've been getting an average of 21.4 MPG with a combination of highway and town driving. It's a shame that Ford has decided to discontinue their mini-van after 2007, especially since they finally got it right. Thanks for reading!

  2. Sylvan Reinger 2025-05-21

    Vehicle year: 2004

I've always been a Ford person, but I never owned a van until now. I purchased a 2004 Freestar over a month ago and got a great deal on it. Despite having 178,XXX miles on it, it drives like it only has 10 miles on it. I did have to replace the front brakes and rotors, as well as the driver's side CV axle, but these were minimal repairs for a vehicle with that many miles. The transmission runs very smoothly and it's the original one, which is surprising given Ford's transmission problems. I absolutely love it! I haven't even had the chance to use all of the features this van has to offer yet. The previous owner kept it in a garage, so it's rust-free, which is impressive considering I live in Michigan. It's a good-looking van and a pleasure to drive.

  3. Geovanny Klocko 2025-05-19

    Vehicle year: 2007

The 2006 Freestar is an exceptional vehicle that I have had the pleasure of owning. It was my first significant car purchase, and it has exceeded my expectations. Despite being a program car with 28k miles on it when I bought it, I have had no issues with it, except for a bad wheel bearing that was covered by the Ford Certified warranty. I have only had to replace the tires, brakes, and plugs & wires as a preventative measure at 75k miles. Unfortunately, with 92k miles on it, I am faced with having to let it go due to rusting on the inside bottoms of the doors and the driver's side wheel well. However, I am confident that it will continue to serve its purpose as a 4-seat vehicle. The extra space that the third row has allowed by folding flat, and how the second row bucket seats tip forward for extra cargo room, has been a great convenience. Overall, it has been a fantastic vehicle with almost no problems.Living just a mile from the border of a state that was included in the recall for the rusting wheel well, I contacted Ford to have my vehicle checked out by the local dealer. Within a few hours, Ford had agreed to replace the wheel well and it was in great shape again. Despite the rust forming due to the snowy and salty roads of N.D., my van has clocked about 98,000 miles and is still running great. In fact, I finally let the Freestar go last month with less than 130k miles on it and it was still running perfectly. After serving me well for nearly 13 years, I decided to upgrade to a 2017 Ford Edge, which I hope will be as reliable as the Freestar was for me.

  4. Maxwell Paucek 2025-05-18

    Vehicle year: 2005

Congratulations on your recent purchase of an 04 SEL! I hope you're enjoying it. I noticed that you were considering used Grand Caravan SEs, but ultimately decided on the Freestar. Great choice! The Freestar offers so many features for such a reasonable price. The interior design is well thought out and provides plenty of storage. The first and second row seats are very comfortable. While the third row is a bit snug for adults on longer trips, it's perfect for short journeys. The powertrain is impressive, with great torque, and the transmission is smooth and unobtrusive. The ride is comfortable and quiet, and the handling is good. The build quality is also very impressive. Overall, I think you made a great choice with the Freestar. Well done!

Hi there! I noticed that you purchased a 06 Freestar van back in October 06. It's great to hear that you loved the interior seating arrangements, especially the shoulder and leg room for the first and second rows. Although, I understand that the third row bench folds flat, it's a bit too low when in use. On the bright side, there's lots of cargo room when stored! I also noticed that the engine has lots of torque, but it seems to have been detuned. With a 4.2 L engine, it should give far more than 200 hp. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!
