Common Ford Freestar problems

The Ford Freestar, a minivan produced between 2004 and 2007, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Two of the most frequently reported issues are EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure.

  1. EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system in the Ford Freestar is designed to reduce harmful emissions by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine's intake manifold. However, the orifice in the intake manifold, which is responsible for managing the flow of gases, can become clogged with sludge over time.

This issue can lead to several problems, including engine misfires, poor performance, and decreased fuel efficiency. In some cases, the engine may even stall or fail to start altogether. The sludge buildup is often caused by the use of low-quality fuel or a lack of regular maintenance, such as not changing the engine oil or fuel filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

To address this issue, the EGR orifice may need to be cleaned or replaced, and the engine may require a thorough inspection to ensure that there is no further damage. Preventive maintenance, such as using high-quality fuel and following the recommended maintenance schedule, can help prevent this issue from occurring in the first place.

  1. Torque Converter Failure

The torque converter is a critical component of the automatic transmission in the Ford Freestar. It is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission and allowing the vehicle to accelerate smoothly. However, the torque converter in the Freestar has been known to fail prematurely, causing widespread and dangerous transmission problems for owners.

Symptoms of torque converter failure may include difficulty shifting, slipping, shuddering, or jerking during acceleration, and a complete transmission failure. In some cases, the torque converter may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly and time-consuming repair.

The torque converter failure in the Ford Freestar was investigated and eventually recalled, but it is unclear whether the recall covered everyone who was affected. It is important for Freestar owners to be aware of this issue and to have their vehicles inspected regularly to ensure that the torque converter is functioning properly.

In summary, the Ford Freestar has been known to have several common problems, including EGR Orifice in Intake Manifold May Plug With Sludge and Cause Misfire, and Torque Converter Failure. These issues can lead to serious engine and transmission problems, and can be costly to repair. Freestar owners are encouraged to follow the recommended maintenance schedule and to be aware of these issues to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

What was wrong with the Ford Freestar?

FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004 AND 2005 FORD FREESTAR AND MERCURY MONTEREY VEHICLES. THE TORQUE CONVERTER OUTPUT SHAFT MAY FAIL. What should you do: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TORQUE CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE.

What is the Ford Freestar controversy?

In a class action filed in 2009, the plaintiffs claimed that Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans in 2004, 2005, and 2006 were built with a manufacturing defect in the vehicles' torque converter. In the District of Minnesota, they claimed Ford breached its express and implied warranties.

Is a 2007 Ford Freestar a good car?

The 2007 Ford Freestar offers good looks and strong safety ratings but falls flat when it comes to acceleration, handling, interior design and overall quality. Unfortunate as it is to say, any of its competitors would be a better choice if you're shopping for a minivan.

What happened to the Ford Freestar?

The Freestar and Monterey minivan had nearly the same platform as the Windstar. The Freestar and Monterey minivan didn't sell too well because people were buying SUV's instead. This caused them both to stop being produced. Ford made the Ford Flex in 2008 to replace the Freestar and Monterey minivan.

Latest negative Ford Freestar car reviews

  1. Domenic Rath 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2005

Although the van offers some comfort and conveniences, the gas mileage is not up to the mark. The rear seats may not be very comfortable for adults and the seat belt reminders can be a bit annoying. However, the tire pressure gauges are very handy. The brakes may be prone to glazing over, which is surprising for a vehicle designed for the 'soccer mom'. Considering the expenses of the vehicle, including fuel, constant brake repairs, and registration costs, it may not be worth it for the amount of comfort and conveniences supposedly offered in a minivan. If you are looking for a better option, it may be worth exploring other choices.

  2. Christ Langworth 2025-01-25

    Vehicle year: 2004

When my husband first brought our van, we had some trouble with the A/C not cooling properly. We took it back to the dealership about three times before they finally fixed it. Unfortunately, we then encountered another issue when one of the hoses developed a hole. Since then, we've had to replace the mass air sensor and now need to change the EGR valve and brakes. The van has been stalling at red lights and stop signs, and jerking while driving. The engine light has been on, but it goes off when it's ready. At this point, I'm feeling quite frustrated and hesitant to purchase another minivan or vehicle from Ford.

  3. Marcelino Schamberger 2025-01-17

    Vehicle year: 2005

I purchased this car after my brand new jeep was totaled in a car accident that was not my fault. I bought it outright from my mechanic when it had 90,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, the electric sliding doors have never worked properly, as they often get stuck, don't open, or open again after closing. Additionally, the power locks sometimes fail, and the alarm occasionally goes off for no reason. The tire light is constantly on, and it burns oil. I have had to have the fuel system and lines replaced several times, and the converter went as well. The most frustrating thing is that about 6 months ago, I lost all radio reception, and just a week ago, my front windshield wipers stopped working. Despite these issues, I have had this van for almost 3 years, and it still runs, so I can't get rid of it, but I wish I could.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with you. I've had some trouble with my Ford Freestar van, and I think it might be worth considering a Honda or Toyota van instead. I've had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs, even though the van only has 40K miles on it. Just wanted to give you a heads up! Take care.

  5. Tom Howe 2025-01-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

I've had this van for a month and I must say, it hasn't been the best experience. I found it difficult to get in and out of, and the gas mileage wasn't great. I think there are better options out there. However, I appreciate the cargo space it provides. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm sure it could work for some people depending on their needs.

Latest positive Ford Freestar car reviews

  1. Deontae Leffler 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2006

(Prior Review: Update Below) Hello there! By now, a 2006 model year vehicle is considered old technology, but there are still enough old Freestars out and about that someone might be interested in one for a hauler or local area utility vehicle. So, for the curious, I will review it once more. In my opinion, in good condition, they're still the best-looking minivan out there (if you like minivans, of course). Overall, and partly due to good maintenance and reasonable driving practices, this has turned out to be an excellent vehicle for us. Our only real complaint has been that it rates worse than average for road noise. However, our other vehicles are a 2012 Ford Focus and a 2017 Kia Sorento, and both of those are considerably quieter on the road. Generally, everything is still working as it should. The engine still runs well and neither burns nor leaks oil. It has had one major repair for a leaking front cover gasket. It still starts right up, even when parked outside overnight in very cold weather. The transmission still works properly and is leak-free, although initial gear engagement from park or neutral is more abrupt than it used to be. That may be a sign of things to come; it's not harsh, but different than what we're used to. Other than frequent fluid flushes averaging around 20,000 miles, the transmission has never been worked on, and no additives have been used. (I might try one now to see if it will help with the initial engagement abruptness.) The body rust hasn't advanced much in the last year or so, but up here in the North Country, it's always a concern. It still rides and drives very nicely down the road (except for the higher road noise level). I think a small exhaust leak has formed recently, so that needs to be fixed. Otherwise, we plan to keep driving it as long as we can keep it going reliably and safely for a reasonable cost. However, at this mileage, any repairs or damage requiring over a few hundred dollars will probably mean the end of it. And we will miss it! Thank you for reading. It has taken us on many great adventures, from the Rockies to D.C. Before it came into our possession, it was a Hertz rental unit in Hawaii. It then made its way to the D.C area, before heading up to the Twin Cities for a few years. Despite having 94,000 miles on it, it still felt and looked as tight and solid as new. Unfortunately, we no longer have the Freestar. We kept it as a grocery-getter/hauler when we bought the Sorento, but by around 237,000 miles it needed repairs, including exhaust work and a small coolant leak from somewhere on the engine. The rust was finally moving into areas that made it more serious than just a cosmetic issue. There was no way to justify the repairs on a vehicle that old with that many miles, so we donated it to Habitat for Humanity. Although it had little remaining cash value, I hope Habitat will get some benefit from the salvage yard.

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your 2006 Sport! It sounds like you were able to get a lot of great features for a reasonable price compared to other Japanese models. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this great vehicle!

The Freestar is a great choice for a VMI conversion for handicapped drivers! The ride is smooth, especially on the highway, and there isn't much wind noise. Although my conversion adds a lot of weight and modifies the aerodynamics of the van, it only slightly hinders fuel economy.
