The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series consists of the BMW F10 (sedan version), F18 (long-wheelbase sedan), BMW F11 (wagon, marketed as Touring) and BMW F07 (fastback/hatchback, marketed as Gran Turismo) executive cars and were produced by BMW from January 2010 (for the 2011 model year) to 2017, with F10 being launched on 20 March 2010 to domestic market and F11 in the summer of 2010. A long-wheelbase sedan version (model code F18) was sold in China, Mexico, Turkey and the Middle East. Introduced in 2011, the M5 model is powered by the BMW S63 twin-turbocharged V8 engine coupled to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The Gran Turismo (F07) is the first and only 5 Series to be produced in a fastback body style with a hatchback truck opening.
In February 2017, the G30 5 Series was released as the successor to the F10. G32 6 Series Gran Turismo (based on the G30 platform) succeeded the F07.

I HAD JUST DRIVEN THROUGH A RAIN SHOWER, SO THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ON, BUT I HAD TURNED THE WIPERS OFF. I PULLED THE CAR OVER AND IMMEDIATELY TURNED THE IGNITION OFF. I GOT OUT TO LOOK UNDER THE FRONT SEAT BUT THERE WAS NOTHING UNDER THE SEAT THAT WAS CAUSING A PROBLEM. WHEN I WAS ON THE PHONE WITH THE 911 OPERATOR, FLAMES STARTED COMING FROM UNDER THE SEAT. - Summary: DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE INDICATED OVERHEATING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THE HEAD GASKET BURNED OUT DUE TO OVERHEATING. THE OVERHEATING WAS CREATED BY THE A COOLING SYSTEM LEAK IN THE OVERFLOW PLASTIC TANK.

- Summary: THE DESIGN OF THE ABS CONTROLLER ON A 2000 BMW 528I IS PRONE TO FAILURE AND WILL RENDER THE ABS FUNCTIONS INOPERABLE. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS SERIES OF BMW AUTOMOBILES. THE FAILURE STARTS WITH VARIOUS WARNING LIGHTS THAT INDICATE THE ABS SYSTEM IS INOPERABLE. THESE FAILURES CAN BE INTERMITTENT AND IT APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO HEAT AS THE CONTROLLER IS MOUNTED INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT VERY NEAR THE EXHAUST SYSTEM. ONCE FAILED THE FAULTY ABS COMPUTER CAN CAUSE AND DOES CAUSE THE FAILURE OF THE SPEED SENSORS MOUNTED ON THE WHEELS. I REPLACED A BAD WHEEL SENSOR AT A COST OF $93 AND WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE BRAND NEW WHEEL SENSOR WENT BAD (RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT OF THE ORIGINAL BAD WHEEL SENSOR WAS 4.4M OHM WHILE THE RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT OF THE NEW WHEEL SENSOR WAS 8.8M OHM. AFTER 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE DASHBOARD MOUNTED WARNING LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND THE RESISTANCE MEASUREMENT OF THE BRAND NEW WHEEL SENSOR WAS 4.4M OHM AND FURTHER TROUBLESHOOTING INDICATED A FAULTY ABS COMPUTER). UPON OPENING OF THE ABS COMPUTER TO INVESTIGATE IT WAS DISCOVERD THAT THE DESIGN OF THE PRIINTED CIRCUIT CARD USES POOR RELIABILITY MECHANICAL DESIGN PROPERTIES FOR A UNIT THAT IS EXPOSED TO EXTREME TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS AND HIGH VIBRATION. THIS IS A WIDELY REPORTED PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS BUT BMW AND BOSCH (ABS COMPUTER MANUFACTURER) REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND PROVIDE REMEDY FOR AFFECTED OWNERS. THIS PROBLEM IS DANGEROUS AS THE ENTIRE ABS COULD FAIL AT ANY TIME REDUCING THE STOPPING POWER OF THE CAR ENTIRELY OR INTERMITTENTLY. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY DEFECT IN THESE CARS AND BY IGNORING THE PROBLEM BOTH BMW AND BOSCH ARE PUTTING DRIVERS AND PROPERTY AT RISK. *NM

- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE BRAKE LAMPS IN THESE VEHICLES ARE CONTROLLED BY A SWITCH ACTIVATED BY THE MOVEMENT OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS SWITCH COULD FAIL INTERNALLY, CAUSING IT TO REMAIN EITHER IN THE "BRAKE LAMPS OFF" POSITION OR IN THE "BRAKE LAMPS ON" POSITION.
- Consequence: IF THIS HAPPENS, THE BRAKE LAMPS EITHER WILL NOT OPERATE OR WILL BE CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATED, REGARDLESS OF BRAKE PEDAL POSITION.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE EXISTING BRAKE LAMP SWITCH WITH AN IMPROVED SWITCH.
