The medium-duty version of the Ford F-Series is a range of commercial trucks manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1948. Derived from the smaller F-Series pickup trucks, the medium-duty range is currently in its eighth generation. Initially slotted between the F-Series pickup trucks and the "Big Job" conventionals, later generations were slotted below the L-Series "Louisville" trucks; the last two generations are the largest vehicles produced by Ford since its exit from the heavy-truck segment.

The medium-duty F-Series has been used for an extensive number of applications, offered as a straight (rigid) truck and a truck-tractor (for semitrailers) in multiple cab configurations. Prior to the production of the Ford C-Series, the model line was also offered in a cab-over engine (COE) configuration; a cowled-chassis variant (the Ford B-series) was used for bus production.

For the 2000 model year, the medium-duty F-Series has been branded as part of the Ford Super Duty range, consisting of the Class 6–7 Ford F-650 and F-750; Class 8 versions of the F-750 have been produced since 2011. The current generation of the medium-duty F-Series is manufactured by Ford in its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), replacing a joint venture with Navistar International named Blue Diamond Truck Company LLC located in General Escobedo, Mexico.

Common Ford F-650 sd problems

Common Problems with the Ford F-650 SD

The Ford F-650 SD is a reliable and robust heavy-duty truck, but like any vehicle, it can experience certain issues. Here are some common problems based on complaints from owners, along with detailed explanations:

  • Aftermarket Component Issues: Aftermarket accessories, such as alarms or exhaust systems, can sometimes cause problems if not installed correctly. They can drain the battery, trigger the check engine light, or even prevent the vehicle from starting. It's essential to ensure that aftermarket items are installed correctly and that they do not interfere with the proper functioning of the vehicle.
  • Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) Failure: The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine to determine the appropriate amount of fuel needed for efficient operation. A malfunctioning MAF sensor can cause issues like difficulty starting, rough idling, or sudden changes in the throttle position.
  • Check Engine Light: If the check engine light in a Ford F-650 SD starts flashing, it indicates a severe problem that requires immediate attention. A flashing light usually indicates a severe engine misfire, which can damage the catalytic converter if not addressed promptly. Common causes of a flashing check engine light include faulty spark plugs, spark plug wires, or ignition coils.
  • Low or Dead Battery: The battery is crucial for starting the vehicle and powering various electrical systems. A weak or dead battery can prevent the vehicle from starting or cause issues with the electrical system. Regular battery maintenance and timely replacement can help prevent this issue.
  • Fuel Rail Pressure Control Valve Failure: Some 2020 Ford F-Super Duty and 2021 F-650/F-750 vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine built on specific dates may experience an illuminated malfunction indicator light (MIL) due to a faulty pressure control valve in the left fuel rail. Replacing the left fuel rail along with the pressure control valve can correct the condition.
  • Exhaust Valves: Early model year engines (built before March 15, 2011) may have issues with exhaust valves cracking and falling off into the cylinder, potentially damaging the glow plug. This issue should not affect later engines.
  • Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor Issues: The EGT sensors can fail, causing check engine lights and requiring sensor replacement. Ford extended the warranty for these sensors due to the high number of failures.
  • EGR Cooler Problems: The EGR cooler can become restricted due to carbon deposits, leading to issues with the EGR system. Ford updated the EGR cooler in later models to address this problem.
  • Coolant and Oil Leaks: Early 6.7 PowerStroke engines were prone to radiator and oil leaks, primarily affecting the radiator, turbo coolant seal, turbo coolant inlet, and water pump. These leaks can be addressed by updating to an aftermarket radiator or other components.

These common problems with the Ford F-650 SD can help owners and potential buyers be aware of potential issues and take preventative measures to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-24
  • Date Complaint: 2022-05-31
  • VIN: 1fdnx6an4pd
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Picked up the brand new F650 rollback tow truck from the dealer in Ohio. Traveling back to California with a Chevy Yukon 2WD on the bed. Approx 200 miles from the dealer the "Service Advance Trac warning appeared on the dash. The traction yellow light and wrench appeared on the dash. I was traveling down the highway. I called my dealer in California to ask what might be wrong. My dealer told me Ford was having a problem with the system and do not have a solution at the present time. however it should not be a performance issue. Continued on with the vehicle. As it turns out not only is it a performance issue its also a major safety issue. First noticed that when pulling away from a stop light vehicle struggled to get moving. Driving on flat ground the vehicle would get up to speed but slowly. The real danger is when braking. After you touch the brakes there is NO throttle response to get going again. The accelerator was as good as dead. This happened at 76 miles per hour on the highway. Coming down a mountain at 76 in the number 1 lane. Loaded semi truck behind me Speed limit 80 . At bottom highway sweeps left as goes back up hill. i had to press the brake due to a slower vehicle in front of me, I pressed the accelerator and no response. continued no response as the semi behind me was locking up his brakes to avoid rear rending me. vehicle reduced speed to 40mph still no response. I darted across the other lanes to shoulder of the road. no response from accelerator. Turned truck off and restarted. Truck sluggishly moved and got up to speed. this was a extremely dangerous situation. My solution to getting truck to California. If I could engage the Cruise control when the truck hit 32 mph i could drive truck with the cruise control using the + and - for speed. this would work. However if you hit the brake. Game over. No throttle response. This is the most dangerous truck I have ever driven.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-02
  • Date Complaint: 2022-01-04
  • VIN: 1FDNF6CY3KD
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving down the road when the engine suddenly quit. There was no brake assist and no steering assist. I stopped in the middle of the road and could not restart the vehicle. The engine would not crank. There was no transmission gear indicator on the dashboard (likely no CAN-BUS communication with the transmission control module). Eventually I found a loose large-diameter power cable that was loose at the front of the fusebox under the hood, located on the driver-side wheel well. I tightened up the nut that holds this large cable to the stud of the fusebox, and the transmission gear indicator returned. After that, the truck started and drove correctly. Apparently this nut was never tightened at the factory, creating a safety issue.
