The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common Ford Cab chassis problems

Common Problems with Ford Cab Chassis Cars

Ford F-150 models have been popular for over 40 years, but each generation has had its share of problems. Here are some common issues based on complaints from owners of Ford cab chassis cars:

  • Frozen Handle Truck Recall: A frozen door handle latch issue has affected 2015-2017 F-Series trucks, as well as 1997-2000 and 2005-2008 F-150 models. Ford initially blamed the problem on over-torqued replacement spark plugs, but owners reported ejections of the original spark plugs. This issue has led to a recall of affected vehicles.
  • Ford Ranger Vehicle Faults and Replacements: The Ford Ranger has experienced technical faults that led to the replacement of nine vehicles in the past six months. Customers have reported delays in getting their vehicles fixed or replaced, as well as issues with digital instruments going blank and pre-collision systems failures.
  • Ford Ranger 3.2L Common Problems and Solutions: The 3.2L Ford Ranger has a common problem with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system, which can cause the vehicle to vibrate at speed due to a manufacturing fault by the supplier of the tailshafts. The solution is to fit a bash plate to protect the DPF from damage. Another issue is the engine harness sitting directly on the engine, which can wear through over time and cause the wires to short, resulting in a dead vehicle. The solution is to stop the wiring from rubbing through by using a large P clamp or a length of heater hose to space the wiring up off the cover.
  • Suspension and Chassis Issues: The independent front suspension of the Ford Ranger can lead to changes in angles between the front wheels and the front diff, causing weakness and potential failure in the CV joints on the front and left driveshafts. Regular inspections and maintenance are necessary to prevent these issues.

These common problems with Ford cab chassis cars highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspections to ensure reliable performance and prevent potential issues.

Do cab and chassis trucks have less power?

Power and Fuel Economy

Comparing the average chassis cab to the average pickup, you'll find that the latter usually offers more horsepower and torque. This is true even when the two models offer very similar engines.

Why are cabs and chassis detuned?

It was explained to me that the manufacturer detuned them to meet emissions in case you put something like a box van on it or anything that would require more power.

What is the difference between pickup and cab chassis?

The pickup trucks tend to have curved frame rails extending rearwards from the cabin, improving the ride quality and distributing the weight of the vehicle. Chassis cabs typically sport straight frame rails. This makes the chassis cabs more compatible with all manufacturers and not just brand specific.

What is the difference between a cab and chassis and a pickup Ford?

Pickup Truck. In contrast to cab chassis trucks, pickups come with a built-in box or bed. On the other hand, cab chassis trucks have customizable back-ends that you can upfit for almost any industry.
