The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid car manufactured by General Motors, also marketed in rebadged variants as the Holden Volt in Australia and New Zealand and the Buick Velite 5 in China, and with a different fascia as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom and as the Opel Ampera in the remainder of Europe. Volt production ended in February 2019.

Sales of the 2011 Volt began in the United States in mid-December 2010, followed by various European countries and other international markets in 2011. Global combined Volt/Ampera-family sales totaled about 177,000 units by the end of October 2018. The U.S. is the leading market, with 157,054 Volts delivered through the end of 2019, followed by Canada with 16,653 Volts sold through September 2018. Just over 10,000 Opel/Vauxhall Ampera cars had been sold in Europe as of June 2016. Until December 2018, the Volt/Ampera family of vehicles was the world's all-time bestselling plug-in hybrid vehicle. As of December 2019, the Chevrolet Volt is listed as the all-time top-selling plug-in hybrid in the American market.

The Volt operates as a pure battery electric vehicle until its battery capacity drops to a predetermined threshold from full charge. From there, its internal combustion engine powers an electric generator to extend the vehicle's range as needed. While running on gasoline at high speeds the engine may be mechanically linked (by a clutch) to a generator set, improving efficiency by 10% to 15%. The Volt's regenerative braking also contributes to the on-board electricity generation. Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2013‍–‍15 model year Volt all-electric range is 38 mi (61 km), with a combined electric mode/gasoline-only rating of 62 mpg‑US (3.8 L/100 km; 74 mpg‑imp) equivalent (MPG equivalent).

The second-generation Volt's improved battery system and drivetrain increased the all-electric range to 53 miles (85 km), its EPA-rated fuel economy in charge-sustaining mode to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp), and the combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode to 106 MPG-e, up from 98 MPG-e. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. and Canada began in October 2015 as a 2016 model year.

The Volt has won several awards, including the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 North American Car of the Year, 2011 World Green Car, 2012 European Car of the Year, and 2016 Green Car of the Year.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-15
  • VIN: 1G1RB6E48FU
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: The passenger presence sensor in the front passenger seat is malfunctioning and spare parts to replace it are not available from the manufacturer. The Chevrolet dealership has inspected and verified this issue, and the system is available for inspection upon request. This is the same issue that NHTSA investigated in the 2013 model described below. This sensor failure results in a check airbag signal and prevents the deployment of the passenger frontal and knee air bags, posing risk of serious injury to passengers. The PSS may develop a malfunction due to bunching of the sensor mat in the seat trench. The bunching of the sensor mat could cause the mat to repeatedly fold in the same location. Over time, the repeated folding can cause an increased resistance in the sensor mat. An increased resistance in the PSS sensor mat is detected as a fault in the air bag system diagnostic. If this fault is detected, a diagnostic trouble code will be stored in the air bag control unit and the air bag MIL will illuminate. Further, if the fault is detected, the passenger frontal and knee air bags will be suppressed in a crash of sufficient severity to warrant a commanded deployment regardless of the nature of size of the occupant of the front passenger seat.

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-29
  • VIN: 1G1RC6E47FU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving 75mph with cruise control during moderate traffic on freeway about 30 minutes after starting the car, my Volt shut off. There was a jolt of the car that felt like strong breaking and my dash along with everything electrical shut off for about 2 seconds then kicked back on with "Service Theft Deterent" on dash. I could not break or steer the vehicle. I had to come to a rolling stop on shoulder of freeway. Luckily I was in toll lane #1 next to the shoulder or I might have been in a wreck with other cars. I have a check engine light on now and a scheduled appointment at Chevy dealer made prior to today for tomorrow. I have had an issue with my Volt not charging at home/work for a few weeks. No breakers pop, the vehicle just wont complete the charge. The battery was replaced a week ago, driven over 250 miles with new battery, and it is still not charging properly. I have no messages on my vehicle regarding battery, engine, etc. Just the check engine light lit up.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-20
  • VIN: 1G1RA6F49FU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THIS VEHICLE HAS 84,500 MILES ON IT AS OF JUNE 2020. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER. DURING A STATE MANDATED SAFETY INSPECTION IN JUNE 2020, BOTH OEM OUTBOARD REAR BRAKE SHOES WERE FOUND TO HAVE SEPARATED INTO 2 PIECES AND FAILED INSPECTION. THE SEMI-METALLIC BRAKE PAD HAD SEPARATED FROM ITS METAL BACKING PLATE. I BELIEVE THE TWO PARTS OF THE BRAKE PAD ASSEMBLY ARE HELD TOGETHER WITH AN ADHESIVE, AND THE ADHESIVE FAILED ON BOTH PADS IN SIMILAR FASHION. AN INTERNET SEARCH REVEALED THAT THIS BRAKE PAD SEPARATION HAS OCCURRED TO A NUMBER OF CHEVY VOLT VEHICLES. REGENERATIVE ELECTRIC BRAKING MEANS THAT THE HYDRAULIC BRAKES (AND THUS THE BRAKE PADS) ARE RARELY USED ON THIS VEHICLE. THE BRAKES HAD NEVER BEEN SERVICED ON THIS VEHICLE, SO THE PADS WERE OEM. I HAVE RETAINED THE BRAKE PADS FOR REVIEW OR ANALYSIS.

  • Summary: WHEN IT RAINS OR THE CAR GETS WET, THERE WILL BE WATER THAT RUNS DOWN FROM THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF THE PASSENGER SIDE INTO THE FLOORBOARD CAUSING THE CARPET TO GET SOAKING WET AS WELL AS THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS THAT RUN UNDERNEATH THE CARPET. IT APPEARS THE SEALANT UNDER THE HOOD AND UNDER THE COWL IS FAULTY CAUSING WATER TO LEAK INTO THE CAB. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE CAR IS STATIONARY OR IN MOTION. THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT AND NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED, NOT TO MENTION THAT THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS GETTING WET COULD POTENTIAL CAUSE A FIRE OR HAZARDOUS SITUATION. ALSO I TOOK IT BY A CHEVY DEALERSHIP BUT THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING IN THE ALLOTTED DIAGNOSTIC TIME WITHOUT HAVE TO CHARGE ME MORE TO REMOVE SEATS AND CARPET. I DECLINED.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-19
  • VIN: 1G1RD6E43FU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY '15 VOLT (99K MILES) CENTER INFORMATION DISPLAY STOPPED WORKING 3 DAYS AGO. IN THE FIRST 2 DAYS, OCCASIONALLY IT WAS ON. ONCE ON IT STAYED ON, THEN NEXT RESTART MIGHT NOT WORK AGAIN. I CHECKED FUSE BOX ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DRIVE PANEL. F4 (10A) IS SUPPOSED FOR CENTER INFORMATION DISPLAY, AND CONTINUITY WAS GOOD. I DID TRY PULLING IT OUT AND PUTTING BACK IN A FEW TIMES HOPING IF IT WAS CONTACT ISSUES WITH THE LEAD I MIGHT SEE DIFFERENCE, BUT DISPLAY WAS STILL NOT ON. BECAUSE THE DISPLAY WAS NOT ON, THE AC DOES NOT WORK, NEITHER DO THE BACKUP CAMERA, SENSORS AND NAVIGATION SYSTEMS. THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WHEN I GOOGLED THE SAME PROBLEM, THERE ARE MANY VOLT OWNERS EPORTING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE CENTER INFORMATION DISPLAY NOT WORKING FOR BOTH GEN 1 AND GEN 2 CHEVY VOLT. IT WAS A PROBLEM THAT CHEVY HAS NOT FIXED IN A LONG TIME. VOLT OWNERS SHOULD GET TOGETHER TO FILE A CLASS ACTION ABOUT THIS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-19
  • VIN: 1G1RD6E43FU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I HAD MY 2015 VOLT (AT ~95000 MILES) SERVICED AT AMERICAN CHEVROLET(MODESTO, CA) ON JUNE 19TH FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE. I HAD 2 MILES EV CHARGE LEFT LEAVING DEALERSHIP PARKING. 2 MIN OUT OF DEALERSHIP, JUST BEFORE STOPPING AT A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT, I SAW AN ERROR: "PROPULSION POWER IS REDUCED" ON DISPLAY. THEN I REALIZED THE CAR HAD NO POWER AT ALL. TURNED OFF ENGINE, AND TURNED IT BACK ON, THE SCREEN SAYS "INITIALIZING....." AND IT LASTED MORE THAN 20 SECONDS, STILL NO POWER. ALL CARS WERE MOVING AGAIN, AND I WAS STUCK ON THE SECOND TO THE RIGHT LANE WITH NO POWER! I POWER CYCLED AGAIN, STILL NO POWER. EMERGENCY LIGHTS DIDN'T LIGHT UP DURING INITIALIZATION. THIS MEANT CARS BEHIND ME WOULDN'T SEE MY LIGHTS. I HAVE A CAMERA FACING THE REAR, AND IT SHOULD HAVE CAUGHT THE HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE. NOW CAME THE SCARY PART, I SAW A BIG SUV DRIVING AT PROBABLY 60MPH CAME RIGHT BEHIND ME!! LUCKILY THE SUV WAS ABLE TO BRAKE REALLY HARD AND SWERVED TO MY RIGHT LANE BEFORE REAR ENDING ME. I GOT OUT THE VEHICLE, AND STARTED SIGNALING TO CARS BEHIND ME, AND ALL THE CARS NOW COULD SEE ME AND CHANGED LANES. I CALLED DEALER, AND TWO ADVISORS ARRIVED IN JUST A FEW MINS. THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT WHY AND GAVE ME A RIDE BACK TO DEALERSHIP AND TOLD ME THE CAR WOULD BE TOWED BACK AND DIAGNOSED. MY VOLT HAS BEEN STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP BEING TEST SINCE JUNE 19TH. TODAY, JUNE 24TH, MY CHEVY ADVISOR, JUAN MORENO CALLED SAID THEY'VE DONE ALL TESTS, AND EVERYTHING HAS BEEN FINE, AND THEY WOULD DO SOME MORE TESTING, AFTER WHICH I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PICK IT UP TODAY. ON JUNE 19TH, I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM GM ABOUT A SOFTWARE UPDATE, HPCM2. I REQUESTED DEALER PERFORM THE UPDATE. I DON'T KNOW IF THE SOFTWARE DEFECT CAUSED MY VOLT LOSING POWER. BUT NOW I REALLY HAD CONCERN OVER THE SAFETY OF THE VOLT AS IT WAS A FAMILY CAR TO HAUL FAMILY.

I CHECKED ONLINE AND SEVERAL OTHER PEOPLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING THAT WAS CAUSED BY A SHORT IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE VISOR THAT IS ON THE SAME FUSE AS THE BACK UP CAMERA AND LIGHTS. I TOOK IF TO THE DEALER, WHEN THEY REPLACED THE FUSE, IT BLEW IMMEDIATELY. THEY RAN DIAGNOSTICS THEN REPLACED THE VISOR. THE DIAGNOSTICS COST OVER $350, THE NEW VISOR $80. THE CAR HAD 38000 MILES ON IT. THIS IS A KNOWN DEFECT IN THIS VEHICLE AND BECAUSE OF THE DESIGN OF THE CAR, THE BACK UP CAMERA IS CRITICAL TO DRIVING SAFELY. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM.

2015 Chevrolet Volt recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2015 Chevrolet Volt.

2015-07-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured November 8, 2013, to March 12, 2015, and 2015 Chevrolet Volt vehicles manufactured April 11, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the inner tie rod may not be tightened to specification allowing the tie rod to separate from the steering gear.
  • Consequence: Separation of the tie rod from the steering gear could result in the loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gear assembly, free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is 15386.

Negative 2015 Chevrolet Volt car reviews

  1. Allan Deckow 2025-02-17

The Volt uses the passenger cabin air conditioning system to cool the battery pack. If there is a leak in the car's air conditioning system (like in my case, where there was an evaporator leak), the car will not allow you to use it in any mode until the air conditioning is repaired. This can be frustrating if you find yourself stuck on the side of the road! Unfortunately, the A/C repair can be quite expensive (mine cost $2,000.00) and may need to be done in the middle of winter just to get the car running again.

  2. Stefan Reinger 2024-11-03

Although I was initially disappointed, I realized that my issues were caused by a dealer lot problem and not the company itself. In my experience, the Volt is a superior car to the Prius. It is smoother, quieter, and feels safer to drive. It is important to read the manuals to fully understand the operational side of the vehicle. While I don't believe it's a five-star car, it comes very close. I would rate its performance as a four, and its comfort as a four, although it could benefit from better seats. The value is also a four, but the price needs to come down. As an economical car, it is fun to drive and gets a four. The interior/exterior gets a three due to missing some things on the assembly line. The build quality is a three, and reliability is too soon to tell.

This car has many pros, including great fuel economy, acceleration, cargo space, and reliable transportation. However, there are some areas for improvement. The interior design lacks visibility due to the side airbags obstructing the view, and the touchscreen can be unresponsive at times. Additionally, the key fob can be a hassle if it fails to detect the signal. Despite these issues, the car has been well-maintained and serviced, and I am confident in its overall performance. The physical backup seems redundant if it still requires a signal to start the car or prevent alarms from going off. It should only be used when the key battery has died. I have researched this issue extensively and even reset my car, but unfortunately, nothing has resolved it. While Chevy has missed some key backup and safety points, this car still has a lot of potential.

I have a 2014 Volt and really like the car. However, I think there may be room for improvement in GM and its dealers' commitment to customer satisfaction, especially when it comes to the Volt. In December 2014, GM issued a 'Customer Satisfaction Program', which it also referred to as a 'recall', regarding a liftgate strut. Unfortunately, six months after the program started, GM dealers reported that they needed at least two weeks to get the part, and the GM Recall Center said that the part was 'back ordered'. It's possible that GM and its dealers (such as Koons in Northern VA) don't stock the part, which could make it harder for people to get the repair made. However, I remain optimistic that GM will continue to improve its customer service and support. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

The Chevrolet Volt has some drawbacks that should be considered before purchasing or leasing. The car can be quite costly to charge in Los Angeles, potentially pushing you to Tier 3 and increasing your electric bill. Additionally, the battery life may not meet some drivers' range needs. Finally, with current gas prices, it may not be the most economical choice. However, the Volt is still an enjoyable car to drive, with decent performance and comfort. The interior and exterior design are also satisfactory. While the build quality could be improved, it is too soon to comment on reliability. Overall, the Volt may not be the best fit for everyone, but it is still a solid choice for those who prioritize eco-friendliness and enjoy a fun driving experience.

Driving my 2015 Volt has been a great learning experience. While the climate control system was unnecessarily complicated (which has been corrected in the 2016 model), owning and driving an electric vehicle has been a lot of fun. I was drawn to the Volt to stop buying gas (which I haven't done since leaving the dealership months ago) and to adopt new technology. I've learned how external temperature affects battery range (cold days subtract at least 10 miles) and how to charge at work and at home. Driving has been really enjoyable - super quiet, smooth, really impressive and, dare I say, fun. After a full year of ownership, the Volt still impresses me. I forget how much more enjoyable an electric drivetrain really is until I get behind the wheel of a standard internal combustion powered car again. The silence inside the cabin is really nice, the utterly smooth and quick acceleration (even when at highway speed needing to pass) brings me joy every time, and the cost of ownership is basically zero. I only wish GM would port this technology to more vehicles. I think a small electric truck for suburban buyers would sell very well. The sky is really the limit. Not having to worry about range issues like in a fully electric vehicle is wonderful. As my 3 year lease comes to an end, I still love my Volt. In fact, I am trading it in on a 2017 Volt. The new model corrects the interior controls issue completely, but I do notice some things that have been lost. First is that the seating and driving position are now a little different, and I find that the older model was a bit more comfortable in terms of support for the driver. The new vehicle was put on a diet to reduce weight, and I think it is a little less quiet now than these original versions. But if you're looking for a used Volt, you can find great deals on these first-generation models (I'd recommend a 2014 or 2015). They have excellent driving dynamics and a useful all-electric range of 30+ miles in cold weather, 40+ miles in warm weather, and work like any other car on long highway trips, getting about 35 mpg. The brand new Honda Clarity plug-in hybrid is coming in 2018, but it only meets the specifications of the first-generation Volt and it looks pretty unattractive. GM may have created the Volt only for positive press and to help it meet CAFE standards so it can keep selling trucks (every month is truck month), but it may have unintentionally started a slow-building revolution, and now the company may be forced to start using this technology in more vehicles, as every car company is promising more electric vehicles (thanks mostly to the mandate from China). Will GM leverage its head-start, or continue to hope people don't actually buy its EVs? Another update - two years in and I still love it. I read an article online the other day that basically complained about electric cars and how charging the batteries is more environmentally problematic than just using gasoline. Horse-pucky. Even if all of your power comes from coal (and most of us get at least some portion of our electricity from hydroelectric dams, nuclear power, wind, or solar), you're still putting the environment in a better position than burning gas. A big part of that is the massive increase in efficiency in converting stored power (battery in this case, liquid fuel in gasoline's case) into rotational motion of the wheels. Electric motors are just much better at that transformation than internal combustion engines - which is why the somewhat wonky EPA conversion for MPGe (the electric equivalent of miles per gallon) shows a Volt getting like 119 miles per electric No Canadian tar pits, no leaking Exxon Valdez, no Keystone XL pipeline, no middle-eastern terrorists getting their funding from my driving a car. And I'm thrilled that this particular combination of battery plus back-up engine generator is a perfect transition from old technology to new. It's great to see that GM has announced it will sell the Volt in China as a Buick, and I bet they'll sell a heck of a lot. I still just wish they would start moving the technology to more of their US cars/trucks/vans.

This is my second Volt! I owned a red 2012 Volt for 3 and a half years, drove 50K miles, and had no issues. I'm happy to report that the 2015 model is almost identical and everything works as expected. Some people don't like the capacitive buttons on the dash, but I don't mind at all. They wear very well! The car itself is very durable and maintains its appearance as long as you give it proper attention. Like most people, I usually go over a thousand miles on a tank of gas, most of the time more. I'm lucky enough to have a charging station at my work location, so there's no additional cost in electricity at home - a nice perk! If you're worried about reliability, don't be. The car goes forever, and the battery will probably last over 200K miles. I read that the electric motor is good for 600K miles! Safety is also top-notch (5 stars).

So, is it a good value? Absolutely! It feels as solid as a Mercedes and almost as luxurious (although it doesn't have electric seats). It's also really fun to drive, like a Mazda 3. Plus, when you factor in tax incentives and fuel savings over 10 years of ownership, it costs about the same as a Corolla. The Volt has a unique character and more than skin-deep beauty that makes owners proud and car enthusiasts rethink what's possible.

  4. Hilton Eichmann 2025-03-18

This car is an amazing deal and an excellent vehicle. Let's break down the numbers: The price is $34,000, but you get $10,000 back (with $2,500 of that covered by CA). Additionally, you'll save about $100 per month on gas thanks to the all-electric mode. With the electric power equivalent to $1.50 per gallon, you can go up to 900 miles on a single tank of gas. Over 10 years, this car will be much more economical than a Prius. While hybrids still use some gas (around 47 mpg), the Volt uses none for the first 40 miles (equivalent to 100 mpg). After that, it still gets at least 37 mpg.

  5. Hazle Bruen 2025-03-04

The car is definitely economical, but it's important to note that it requires premium fuel, which can be more expensive than regular fuel. Additionally, while the gas mileage is better than most non-hybrid cars, it's not as good as a Prius. Despite this, the car is still electrifyingly fun to accelerate, without necessarily encouraging speeding. The interior is very comfortable, although it's worth noting that it can only accommodate four people. The trunk space is reasonably large for a compact car. However, the controls for the audio, ventilation, and navigation can be difficult to use while driving, as they are capacitive and lack tactile feedback. This can lead to mistyping and taking your attention away from the road. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but it's definitely worth considering if you're looking for a comfortable and fun ride.
