The BMW Z3 is a range of two-seater sports cars which was produced from 1995 to 2002. The body styles of the range are:

  • 2-door roadster (E36/7 model code)
  • 2-door coupé (E36/8 model code)

The Z3 was based on the E36/5 compact platform, a shortened version of the conventional E36 platform. This smaller and cheaper platform used the rear semi-trailing arm suspension design from the older E30 3 Series. It is the first mass-produced Z Series car.

M models were introduced in 1998 in roadster and coupé body styles and were powered by the S50, S52, or S54 straight-six engine depending on country and model year. The M models came with a 5-speed manual transmission. The regular Z3s were offered with straight-sixes or four-cylinder engines.

Production ended on June 28, 2002, with the Z3 line replaced by the E85 Z4.

BMW NA SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THIS DESIGN FLAW AND FORCED TO DO A RECALL ON ALL CARS THEY MADE WITH THIS FLAW. I WILL SEEK ALL NECESSARY LEGAL ACTION TO HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. ALSO THE SINGLE REAR DIFFERENTIAL MOUNT ALSO HAS A TEAR INTHE METAL THAT EEQUALS TO ONE AND HALF INCH ON THE MOUNT CONSISTING THAT 33% OF THE MOUNT HAS FAILED AND IS GETTING WORSE. ALSO THE TEARING FROTHE INTERIOR IS ALL THE WAS THOUGH THE CAR ALLOWING EXAUST FUMES INTO THE CABIN OF THE CAR. *AK

  • Summary: CERTAIN PRO-A MOTORS CORNER LAMPS, TURN SIGNALS, AND HEADLIGHTS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT LAMPS FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. SOME COMBINATION LAMPS THAT ARE NOT EQUIPPED WITH AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 108, LAMPS, REFLECTIVE DEVICES, AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT.
  • Consequence: WITHOUT THE AMBER REFLECTORS, THE VEHICLE WILL BE POORLY ILLUMINATED, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: PRO-A MOTORS WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER TO REPURCHASE THE LAMPS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 3, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT PRO-A MOTORS AT 323-838-2988.

  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL MAY CONTAIN RING GEAR BOLTS THAT WERE INCORRECTLY TORQUED DURING ASSEMBLY. THE BOLT OR BOLTS COULD LOOSEN LEADING TO NOISE FROM THE DIFFERENTIAL.
  • Consequence: THE BOLT OR BOLTS COULD LOOSEN LEADING TO NOISE FROM THE DIFFERENTIAL AND IF A BOLT WERE TO COMPLETELY WORK LOOSE FROM ITS MOUNT, LOCKUP OF THE REAR AXLE COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLE'S DIFFERENTIAL AND IF INVOLVED, WILL REPLACE IT.

  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE NUT THAT SECURES THE MAIN POSITIVE CABLE TO THE POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL CLAMP WAS NOT TIGHTENED PROPERLY, ALLOWING THE CABLE TO LOOSEN OVER TIME. IF THIS OCCURRED, THE CABLE COULD ULTIMATELY LOOSEN TO THE POINT WHERE ELECTRICAL CONTINUITY COULD BE INTERRUPTED.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURED WHILE THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING, THE ENGINE COULD STOP. ALSO, IF THE VEHICLE WERE BEING OPERATED AT NIGHT, THE LIGHTING SYSTEM COULD SHUT OFF, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE NUT TO THE PROPER SPECIFICATIONS.

    If you're looking for a car that's comfortable for long trips, looks great, and makes you feel good every time you drive it, then this is the one for you. While it's not meant to be pushed to its limits on the street, the inline six engine provides strong acceleration in any gear, making shifting almost optional. Additionally, the car stops smoothly without being grabby. I've personally driven 22k miles without any issues. In fact, my recent drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway felt like it was made for the Z3!

    Handling is amazing! I can corner it as hard as possible and the tires just won't break lose. Freeway ramps feel like astronaut training. The unusual styling grabs too much attention at times. It seems almost every day someone asks, 'what is that?' Some people just rave about it, while others just don't get it. I'm going to make some modifications, such as a new chip, exhaust, and intake, and take it to the next level.
