The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Can not get the truck to go over 30mph of change any more gears. We did manage to take a 15 min ride to nearby Chevy Dealer. Dealer has confirmed no codes or check engine lights. After 1 full week in, no further information has been provided except at some point next week, it’s on the schedule to open the transmission. Vehicle is now stuck in Maryland. I did receive a rental to continue my way home that evening to SC.

Took truck to gm dealer on August 1 2024 who said the transmission shift solenoid plate has to be replaced. Gm dealer still has my truck as of October 16 2024 and all I they can tell me is that the part is on back order and they have no idea when it will be available. This could have caused a serious accident as I was also towing a 3500 lb trailer at 65mpg at the time with the speed being reduced so quickly by the failure.

- Summary: While hauling a trailer I received a warning tone and looked down to read the message, "reduced engine power", and the service engine light appeared all at the same time. The engine shutoff at the same time I received the warnings and didn't allow me to safely pull off the road.. I lost power steering, power braking, and controlling the vehicle and trailer while coasting to the sholder was difficult. Fortunately it was early in the morning and I was only traveling 35 mph on a straight road, and no other vehicles were on the road. If I was on an interstate traveling 55+ mph or on a curvy road it would have caused an accident or worse. I was very fortunate. This was the first time I experienced this problem and hadn't received prior warning messages or lights. The truck would not restart and the truck and trailer were towed to the dealership. The diagnosis was a failed "Fuel Pump Control Module." After waiting several weeks the replacement Fuel Pump Control Module did solved the problem. I kept the failed Fuel Pump Control Module and is available for inspection. Please investigate thoroughly! I was extremely fortunate the part failed when it did and I was able to walk away unharmed.

- Summary: Chevy Duramax trucks, 2011-2016 use a CP4 fuel pump that will eventually fail. The engine shuts off and there is a loss of steering and brakes. This is a major safety issue. I called Chevy GM 1800 222 1020 and was told, " we are aware of the problem, have no remedy, no recall has been issued yet, call back in a month". My daughter has a 2015 that failed when she was hauling expensive horses, the dealer put the same type defective pump back in the truck. Every diesel repair shop, dealer, and GM is aware of this defect. There is a class action law suit C/O JND Seattle WA. 1 866 848 0815 that may reimburse owners that have had a failure, assuming they are still alive. GM needs to recall, and replace these CP4 pumps with a CP3 or whatever they did to correct the issue in 2017 and later engines, prior to failure. - Summary: While driving with a trailer connected the display in the truck will say trailer disconnected. Then the light will go away and come back on. The trailer plug and the trailer are connected and the plug is tight. When this happens the trailer braking system is disabled (trailer has no brakes) I can plug the same trailer to Ford or Dodge with no issues. Have had the Chevy to the dealer 4 times now and they are unable to duplicate the problem. I have researched the problem on the internet and there are a lot of discussions of other people having the same issue. GMC has replaced the trailer control module, but this did not fix my problem. I am at the point the dealer and GMC are giving me the run around. I bought this truck for commercial use and frequently haul trailers. It is very unsafe when the brakes on the trailer are disabled.

I really like this truck! Although the gas mileage isn't great, it has a lot of power for pulling trailers. I bought it for two reasons: to pull my fifth wheel camper and boat, and to go hunting. In North Dakota, you can even pull tandem trailers behind your pickup if the first trailer is a fifth wheel with brakes. This truck can pull all day long! Just be careful in temperatures over 90 degrees, as GMs tend to overheat and I've seen them on the side of the road. Luckily, I haven't experienced this personally. When pulling tandem trailers, I get 6 to 8 mpg, so it's important to keep an eye on the fuel gauge (if it works correctly). As for maintenance, all it needs is regular oil changes and new tires.

I purchased this truck two years ago and have had a great experience with it. It's a powerful and attention-grabbing vehicle that is perfect for those who enjoy a fun ride. While it may not be the quickest or most nimble truck out there, it has excellent highway manners. The 6.0 engine is particularly impressive when cruising at 80 mph or idling. I have only encountered two issues during my ownership, which were the instrument cluster (replaced by the dealer under a recall) and a steering wheel shaft bearing. After experiencing what I thought was a knock in the engine, I discovered that using 89 octane fuel stopped the knocking and improved my mileage by 10%. The stock tires were 245/65/16 or about 29 inches, which I found to be too small for this truck. I recommend upgrading to 265/75/16 tires with Load Range E, which has improved my highway mileage to 15-16 mpg. Overall, I highly recommend getting a Chevy truck.

I love this truck! It was my first truck when I was just 15 years old. Unfortunately, the trans (4L80E) went at 142,993 miles and I lost reverse. Despite that, it's a very comfortable truck. I do notice that when I go over bumps, the bed seems to move separately from the cab. The interior design is pretty good, although the middle seat does not fold down for an armrest and the rear seats are locking, which can be a bit of a pain.

What a fantastic truck! It's so comfortable for everyone in my family and has an impressive amount of power. The 6.0L engine is a real monster when it comes to hauling and towing! I found the ride to be fantastic, especially since it's a 2500 and not a 2500HD. I test drove both and found the HD version to have a harsher ride. The interior is excellent and I haven't found any problems with the truck so far.

I have been a loyal Chevy truck owner since 1972, but unfortunately my latest truck has had some issues. At around 20,000 miles, the oil pump failed, but it was not a major problem. However, at 25,000 miles, I noticed a knocking sound when starting the truck, which turned out to be the 'piston slap problem'. Despite bringing it to Sir Walter Chevy in Raleigh, they refused to look at it and only provided me with TSB #01-06-01-028, which did not address the issue. After doing some research online, I discovered that there was an extended warranty on the motor that covered the problem. Although I am currently experiencing some issues with the truck lasting only 5 minutes on startup at 29,000 miles, I am grateful for the extended warranty. Unfortunately, I am having trouble selling the truck due to the problem, so I am considering purchasing a Dodge Hemi instead.

We have tried various methods to improve the gas mileage, including installing a computer chip, air intake, and dual exhaust. However, despite our efforts, we are still only achieving 13 miles per gallon, and only 8 miles per gallon when towing. It may have been more beneficial to purchase the 454, which offers similar mileage but with more power.

You'll be happy to know that this truck has been performing reliably for 4 years without any problems. It also gets decent fuel economy for its size and has plenty of interior room. Plus, it has good power to handle any task.

This truck is amazing! It rides so smoothly and has incredible power to pull. It's even become our family car, replacing the minivan. With two adults, two kids, and two dogs, we have plenty of room. The interior is fantastic and has more features than most luxury cars on the market today. My wife especially loves the quadrasteer feature, which allows her to park this 20' truck in spots tighter than most cars. It has a tighter turning radius than our S10 Blazer, and the quadrasteer also provides great stability when towing a trailer. The only downside is that the quadrasteer only comes with a 4.10 gear ratio, which means lower fuel economy. It would be great if they offered the quadrasteer with a 3.73 option.

Overall, the truck has been good. Although there were issues with 5 injectors and the driver's seat adjust mechanism (which were fortunately covered under warranty), the instrument panel cluster has been a bit of a joke. It's frustrating that there are entire companies dedicated to rebuilding IPCs for all makes of trucks. Unfortunately, this means that the truck is down while you have to pay $500 for a rebuilt defective IPC. (GM has announced that they will pay for this, but we have yet to see any money.) OnStar was helpful for unlocking doors and diagnosing ground faults on several glow plugs, but once the 'free' period runs out, it's easier to just hide an extra key. It's important to keep in mind that OS's peace of mind comes at a cost. If you can afford an expensive truck, then be prepared for expensive upkeep. All in all, it's a good and powerful work truck.
