1989 Chevrolet G20 problems
The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.
Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.
After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Common 1989 Chevrolet G20 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet G20 1989, several common problems have been identified:
- Rough Idling and Stalling When Hot:
- Another common problem with the 1989 Chevrolet G20 van is rough idling and stalling when the engine is hot, especially after lightly tapping the gas pedal. This issue can be attributed to various factors such as a faulty O2 sensor, air/idle controller, or fuel pressure irregularities. Owners experiencing these symptoms should check the fuel pressure, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters to diagnose and address the root cause of the problem.
- Alternator Cable Connection Issue:
- Owners have reported finding loose or improperly connected cables, specifically the alternator cable, in the Chevrolet G20 1989 van. This can lead to charging issues, affecting the battery and overall electrical system of the vehicle. Ensuring that all cables are properly connected and secured is crucial to maintain the proper functioning of the alternator and electrical system.
- Burping or Coughing Air Up the Carburetor:
- Some owners have reported a peculiar issue where the vehicle sounds like it is burping or coughing air up the carburetor, especially during idle, leading to stalling and rough running conditions. This problem could be related to issues with the map sensor, throttle position sensor, or other components affecting fuel delivery and engine performance. Proper diagnosis involving checking fuel pressure, compression, and spark, along with inspecting the mentioned sensors, is essential to resolve this issue effectively.
By addressing these common problems reported by Chevrolet G20 1989 owners, car owners can ensure the longevity and optimal performance of their vehicles. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and thorough inspections are key to keeping the Chevrolet G20 running smoothly and reliably.
