Chevrolet G20 problems

The Chevrolet Van or Chevy Van (also known as the Chevrolet/GMC G-series vans and GMC Vandura) is a range of vans that was manufactured by General Motors from the 1964 to 1996 model years. Introduced as the successor for the rear-engine Corvair Corvan/Greenbrier, the model line also replaced the panel van configuration of the Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle was sold both in passenger van and cargo van configurations as well as a cutaway van chassis that served as the basis for a variety of custom applications.

Produced across three generations (1964–66, 1967–70, and 1970–96), the model line was sold under a wide variety of model names under both the Chevrolet and GMC brands. The first two generations were forward control vehicles (with the engine placed between the seats); the third generation adopted a configuration placing the engine forward of the driver. The second and third generations shared powertrain commonality with the C/K pickup truck model line.

After the 1996 model year, GM retired the G-Series vans, replacing them with the GMT600-platform Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

  • Summary: TRAVELING STRAIGHT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (65MPH), ON A VERY SMOOTH HIGHWAY, A LOUD POP WAS HEARD AND MY FRONT END DRIVER'S SIDE SUSPENSION COLLAPSED. I VEERED LEFT, STARTED TO ROLL, AND WAS RIGHTED BY A TOYOTA TACOMA IN THE LANE TO MY LEFT. THE TACOMA PROCEEDED TO WRAP AROUND THE FRONT OF MY VEHICLE COLLIDING WITH A VEHICLE IN THE LANE TO MY RIGHT. TWO VEHICLES WERE TOTALED AND THE DRIVER OF THE TACOMA SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE RECENTLY INSTALLED SUSPENSION (MOOG COMPONENTS, INSTALLED BY FIRESTONE) HAD TWICE BEEN INSPECTED BY FIRESTONE IN THE PREVIOUS 6,000 MILES. (SUSPENSION INSTALLED 10,000 MILES PRIOR TO ACCIDENT, INSPECTED 6,000 AND 3,000 MILES PRIOR TO ACCIDENT BECAUSE I NOTED TO FIRESTONE OBSERVED EXCESSIVE TIRE WEAR AND A SUSPENSION CLUNKING NOISE). THE PATROLMAN ON SCENE DID NOT CITE ME BECAUSE HE OBSERVED THE OTHERWISE BROKEN SUSPENSION WAS OF NEW, RECENTLY INSTALLED CONDITION. A LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE. GIVEN THE SEVERITY OF THE ACCIDENT I REQUESTED ALL FAILED SUSPENSION COMPONENTS BE PLACED IN MY VEHICLE. WHEN I ARRIVED TO PICK UP THE VEHICLE I WAS INFORMED THESE PARTS WERE DISCARDED. TWO DAYS AFTER I PICKED UP THE VEHICLE I FORMALLY REQUESTED FIRESTONE ADDRESS A SERIES OF SUSPENSION CONCERNS I HAD, ONE YEAR LATER, NO RESPONSE ON ANY CONCERN. 500 MILES AFTER THE SUSPENSION RE-REPAIR, I ONCE AGAIN WAS EXPERIENCING A CLUNKING NOISE AND ANOTHER FIRESTONE RETAIL CENTER DETERMINED ALIGNMENT SHIMS WERE MISSING, AND ON REPLACEMENT THE CLUNKING NOISE DISAPPEARED. FIRESTONE HAS NOT RESPONDED IF THEIR COULD BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN SHIM OMISSION AND PREMATURE BALL JOINT FAILURE.

  • Fire: 1
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNED A 1979 CHEVROLET G-20. WHILE HIS VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN HIS DRIVEWAY WITH THE IGNITION ON, HE NOTICED BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. HE ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE HOOD BUT IT WAS EXTREMELY HOT AND FLAMES BEGAN COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED AND A REPORT WAS FILED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, THE FIRE MARSHALL ADVISED THAT THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE WAS DUE TO ETHANOL FUEL DISSOLVING THE FUEL FILTER, WHICH CAUSED FUEL TO LEAK ONTO THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 500,000. UPDATED 4/19/10 THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS IN IDLE. AS HE PROCEEDED TO BACK OUT OF HIS DRIVEWAY, HE HEARD THE ENGINE STOP AFTER A BACKFIRE THROUGH THE CARBURETOR. HE IMMEDIATELY OBSERVED BLACK SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE FIRE WAS INITIATED WHEN THE PLASTIC INLINE FUEL FILTER FAILED, DUE TO ETHANOL DISSOLVING THE FUEL IN THE FLOAT BOWLS. THE FIRE SPREAD TO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT PRIOR TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS ARRIVAL. THE SAFETY ISSUE WAS NOT WITH THE VEHICLE, BUT WITH THE MANDATORY ETHANOL FUEL WHICH HAS CAUSED NUMEROUS FIRES . ACCORDING TO THE FIRE REPORT, THE FIRE WAS CAUSED BY A FUEL LEAK WHICH IN TURN LEAKED ONTO THE MANIFOLD. UPDATED 07/07/10*JB

  • Summary: I HAD ZANESVILLE JOINT AND CLUTCH MAKE ME A NEW DRIVESHAFT FOR MY 1986 CHEVY G-20 VAN, BECAUSE MY OLD DRIVESHAFT WAS CREATING A VIBRATION. THIS NEW ONE PIECE DRIVESHAFT WAS APROX. 65.5" IN LENGTH FROM CENTER TO CENTER OF U-JOINT, USING 2.75" O.D. BY .065" WALL THICKNESS SEAMED TUBING. I INSTALLED THE NEW DRIVESHAFT THEN WENT FOR A DRIVE TO CHECK FOR ANY VIBRATIONS. THE ORIGINAL VIBRATIONS OCCURRED AT 55MPH WITH THE OLD DRIVESHAFT, AS I HAD EXPLAINED ALL OF THIS TO ZANESVILLE JOINT AND CLUTCH PRIOR TO THEM MAKING ME A NEW DRIVESHAFT. SO I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY TO TEST FOR VIBRATIONS AT 55MPH WITH THE NEW DRIVESHAFT. TO MY SURPRISE I NOTICED A VIOLENT VIBRATION FOLLOWED BY A CONSTANT BANGING, AS I THEN TRIED TO GUIDE THE VEHICLE TO THE BURM OF THE HIGHWAY. I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO FIND OUT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. TO MY SURPRISE THERE WAS ONLY HALF OF THE NEW DRIVESHAFT STILL ATTACHED TO MY VEHICLE. AS I LOOKED DOWN THE HIGHWAY IN TOTAL DISBELIEF I SAW THE OTHER HALF OF MY DRIVESHAFT. IT WAS THEN THAT I REALIZED I HAD NOT EVEN TRAVELED HALF OF A MILE ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55MPH. VISUALLY MY NEW DRIVESHAFT WAS DESTROYED ALONG WITH FLOOR BOARDS AND EXHAUST. IT WAS LATER AFTERI INSTALLED MY OLD ORIGINAL DRIVESHAFT THAT I FOUND MORE DAMAGES INCLUDING TRANSMISSION AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL. I CONTACTED ZANESVILLE JOINT AND CLUTCH AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE OPERATORS FAULT AND THEY DID NOTHING TO CORRECT THE FAILURE. I CONTACTED THE OHIO ATTORNEY GENERAL AND THE OHIO BBB, AFTER ABOUT 2 YEARS OF REBUTTAL, TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE I GAVE A LIST OF DAMAGES AND PRICES OF NEW PARTS, BUT WAS REFUSED AND ONLY OFFERED A REFUND FOR MY DRIVESHAFT. WHICH I DID NOT EXCEPT. *TR
