The Kia Opirus is an executive car/full-size sedan, manufactured by Kia Motors and marketed over a single generation for model years 2003–2012 globally and 2004-2009 in North America. Having debuted internationally at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the four-door, five-passenger, front-engine, front-drive sedan was launched to the North American market at the New York International Auto Show and in San Diego, bearing the Amanti nameplate — and prioritizing luxury content and comfort over dynamic performance and agility.
Intended to give Kia upward access to global premium markets, the Opirus represented a departure for the brand in both styling and market positioning. Developed over 22 months at a cost US$167 million (€143 million), 18% of the overall development cost went to R&D investment and 41% to development of production technologies.
As Kia's first premium vehicle, the Opirus replaced the Mazda 929-derived Enterprise in the South Korean domestic market. The Opirus was also the first Kia vehicle sharing a platform with sister company Hyundai, using a variation of the third generation Hyundai Grandeur/XG Y4 platform. For the Opirus, the platform was lengthened 1.9 inches, overall length increased 4.1 inches and height increased 2.6 inches. As Kia's largest sedan, the Opirus was marketed in a single trim level, sharing components with the Grandeur/XG, and a range of engines including its 3.5 L V6 engine (North America). All models were manufactured in Kia's Hwaseong Plant near Incheon.
A 2007 facelift, introduced at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, included upgraded specifications, a curb weight reduction of 250 pounds, revised suspension and a 3.8 L V6 engine (North America) with a 32-percent increase in power over its predecessor. Styling revisions included a shorter and wider grill, revised hood, headlamps, front and rear bumper fascias, alloy wheels, trunk deck lid, tail lamps, dual exhaust outlets and rear quarter panels. The interior featured a revised instrument panel design.
The name Opirus referred to the ancient city of Ophir, noted for its wealth — and was selected via an online survey from the choices of Opirus, Regent and Conzern. In 2004, the New York Times described the name Amanti as an untranslatable latinate construction, intended to connote luxury.

IN THE MOST RECENT EVENT I COULD NOT STOP THE CAR FROM RUNNING A RED LIGHT, ENTERING AN INTERSECTION AND NEARLY HAD A COLLISION IN THE PROCESS. THE PROBLEM IS THIS: EVERY NOW AND THEN APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES--WHICH OF COURSE IS SUPPOSED TO STOP THE CAR--ACTUALLY CAUSES THE CAR TO ACCELERATE DRAMATICALLY--TO JACKRABBIT I THINK IT IS CALLED--WITH SUCH FORCE THAT EVEN FULL PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE BRAKES CANNOT STOP IT. THE TACHOMETER GOES INTO THE RED OR DANGER ZONE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. I HAVE NOTED ON KIA FORUM (A WEB SITE FOR KIA OWNERS WITH NO CONNECTION TO KIA MOTOR COMPANY) OTHER AMANTI OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM. THE KIA COMPANY DOES NOT ACKNOWLEDGE ANY PROBLEM AND SAYS THAT I MUST TAKE IT IN SO THAT IT CAN BE FIXED IF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CAN DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. OF COURSE, GIVEN THE INFREQUENCY OF THE PROBLEM, THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM WHEN I HAVE TAKEN IT IN--MOST RECENTLY A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. SINCE I CAN NEVER KNOW WHEN IT MIGHT HAPPEN, ALL DRIVING OF THE CAR MAKES ME VERY ANXIOUS--AFRAID IT WILL HAPPEN, FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN I APPROACH A CROSSWALK FULL OF CHILDREN. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2007 Kia Amanti.

- Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A STOP LAMP SWITCH MALFUNCTION MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
- Consequence: ANY OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS, ALONE OR IN COMBINATION, MAY LEAD TO A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 17, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT KIA'S CONSUMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-333-4542.

I chose this car for its great features, safety, comfort, and reliability. The Michigan winter winds can be fierce, but this car's weight makes it feel sturdy and secure. I was able to purchase a year-old program car with only 16k miles in like-new condition for a great price of $16k. Although Consumer Reports had negative things to say about the Amanti, I've learned to take their opinions with a grain of salt. This car has been perfect for my needs and the leather seats are surprisingly comfortable. I love taking long trips in this car because of its quiet and comfortable ride. While CR may complain about its handling, I've found that as long as you're a safe driver, the Kia ESC can help you out of any tricky situations on the road.

I wasn't really considering the Kia Amanti until I started seeing it on the road more and more often. I've actually had mine for almost 6 months now and have driven it from Florida to Maryland twice. It's been an absolute joy to drive. I also have a Mercedes Benz, but I have to say that I enjoy driving the Kia just as much, if not more, on the open road.

We absolutely adore our stylish new car! We've been receiving so many compliments on its sleek design. Plus, it's incredibly comfortable and has a nice zip to it. Overall, we couldn't be happier with our purchase.

I can't believe I bought a KIA! I'll be taking delivery the day after Mardi Gras, if all the paperwork goes through. By accident, I looked at one and did a lot of research online and talked with a lot of people. Everyone that owned a Kia was happy. My kids are a bit embarrassed for me, one has an SL500, SL55, S55, and GL450, while the other has a Lexus 460 and Yukon XL, among others. They're just too yuppie. Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this car that I purchased six months ago. Unfortunately, I had to take it to the dealer three times in the first month because I noticed a problem with the transmission. Whenever I accelerated, the car would lurch forward, which was quite concerning. One time, I was at a traffic light and when it changed, the car lurched forward unexpectedly. I had to steer the car towards the sidewalk to avoid hitting the people in front of me, but ended up hitting a pole because the gas pedal got stuck. Although the car looks beautiful on the outside, I have concerns about its mechanical safety.
