2014 Acura Rlx problems

acura logo

The Acura RLX is a mid-size flagship luxury car manufactured by Honda and sold under their Acura division, released in 2013, succeeding the RL. The RLX was discontinued in 2020.

Background and development

The Acura Legend was a very successful vehicle to launch Acura as a separate division, and combined with sales of the Integra this resulted in Acura outselling longtime luxury marques BMW and Mercedes-Benz as well as Toyota's new luxury division Lexus. However, the successor RL sold below expectations due to relatively tight interior for its size, the lack of a V8 performance engine option and better handling rear-wheel drive experience, and/or relatively expensive compared to its rivals.

An October 2009 Car and Driver blog cited a dinner with Acura executives who acknowledged that the introduction of the new, larger, and in some guises, more powerful, fourth generation Acura TL made it difficult to market the then-current RL. In November 2009, an Autoweek article reported that new Honda CEO Takanobu Ito told Automotive News that Acura is going to change course. Speaking of the worldwide economy before the collapse of investment bank Lehman Brothers, Ito said through an interpreter, "Pre-Lehman, we did have the idea to produce more multicylinder engines... I see the future of Acura as a merger of BMW and Audi -- something between high performance and high technology." As a result of this midstream change, Acura will be in a "low-growth period of developing new products," Ito said. "We were thinking that we could come up with glamorous, gorgeous products that would sell. Now, our premium products will be expressed in advanced environmental technologies, rather than glamorous things attached to the product," he said.

WHEELS,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-29
  • VIN: JH4KC1F53EC
  • Components: WHEELS,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I have a serious safety issue with my 2014 Acura RLX. While driving, the rear wheel intermittently kicks out, causing the entire vehicle to swerve unpredictably. This poses a significant safety risk to myself, passengers, and other road users. The rear wheel kicks out, leading to sudden swerving of the vehicle. I believe this is related the the Rear Toe Actuators and PAW-S system. I first noticed this issue in July 2023 and sought assistance from Acura. At first the dealership denied that my car was affected by their Service Bulletin 23-022. I knew I had an issue and called and created a case with Acura. I drove my car as little as possible last year. Last month, I had an issue which made my car only drive under 50mph and all these lights popped up on my instrument panel: it read: Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) problem, Forward collision warning (FCW) Electric Power steering problem, Brake. I brought my car in to my regular mechanic. He showed me the codes on my car showed the service bulletin. I then took my car back to Acura dealership (June 17th). Acura identified the issue as related to rear toe actuators. Acura called me and informed me that I was outside of their warranty period even thought I started the case with them last year. The estimated cost exceeds $3,000, which I find financially burdensome. The safety issue persists despite Acura's negligence and puts me and my family and other drivers at risk, necessitating urgent intervention to prevent potential accidents. Service Bulletins: Reference to Acura Service Bulletin 23-022 addressing similar issues. Communication with Acura/Honda: Case numbers: Case 14025611 Please help me in investigating this safety issue and determining if it warrants further action, such as a safety recall or investigation into Acura's handling of the matter. I believe this issue may affect other owners of the 2014 Acura RLX or other RLX owners up to the year 2020 and poses a safety risk that requires immediate attention.

STEERING,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-31
  • VIN: JH4KC1F56EC
  • Components: STEERING,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: After making a turn at light, steering wheel stayed turned while car was straight. Then it jerks itself back into place. Another occurrence was while driving on highway, steering wheel was turning sideways while driving straight then car starts to slow down on its own and the lights on dash came on ( breaking system, fwd collision, lane departure, brake hold system,VSA, EPS, hill start assist) this has happened 3 times in the last 2-3 months. We have changed tires, had alignment done, had fuses replaced, new battery and it is still happening. Not safe while driving on highway or anywhere for that matter. Needs to be recalled and fixed. I have looked up this issue and it seems to be an ongoing issue on this year/make/model. I cannot be driving in a car like this if it keeps happening, I drive my elderly mother and in-laws to their doctor appointments and cannot risk an accident with them. It happened once with my in- laws in the car. Could be a serious lawsuit on Acura. The consumer stated that all of the issues started around the same time.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-03
  • VIN: JH4KC1F55EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The car, unexpectedly fishtails while driving straight. This has happened since I purchased the car and it is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS as it can thrust the car into oncoming traffic. The service technicians can never duplicate the problem. The problem, according to the dealer is the PAWS system rear wheel steer and it is a very well known problem with the 2014 RLX. The dealer told me that the PAWS system parts are no longer made and if they were, they would cost $2800.00 each side, plus labor. Honda Acura must recall and correct this problem before it kills someone. At the very least figure out how to disable the system so it can’t steer on its own. There WILL BE traffic fatalities if this issue isn’t corrected, it’s just a matter of time. (The internet is flooded with the same story by other owners who have not reported their concerns to NHTSA)

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-22
  • VIN: JH4KC1F91EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Rear wheels on car will suddenly without warning turn causing the car to violently fishtail. I have had this happen 5 times in the last month. Acura dealer reproduced the malfunction 2 times. The last time this happened it almost put my family into oncoming traffic. We cannot currently drive the car for safety reasons and parts to fix the problem are not available. Seems the problem is within the P-AWS rear wheel steering actuators. Car is available for inspection and there are no warning lights or messages when this happens.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-21
  • VIN: Jh4kc1f34ec
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: At about 35 mph, the vehicle started to fishtail while going straight after performing a left U-turn. VERY SCARY!! I regain control after two seconds and warning lights started to flash. I had my four and six-year-old in the car. I pulled over, turned off the vehicle, waited 30 seconds and restarted it. All lights went away. I then after, drove the car slowly home in 100+ degree weather. There has been a rubbing noise coming from the vehicle while turning at low speeds for over 6 months.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-15
  • VIN: JH4KC1F36EC
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: Electronic Stability Control Problem-available for inspection upon request. 1. I have had issues with the rear end fishtailing for a few seconds that would correct itself. Today after I pulled out of work, the car fishtailed when I was entering the highway. All the warning lights started flashing-paws, brake assist, power steering, hill, lane departure, etc. 2. This is very dangerous and a safety issue that Acura should take responsibility for before accidents occur! 3. I notified the dealer on 5-13-2022 who stated the problem was probably just battery voltage related. 4. No warnings with the dashboard flashing lights until 5-13-2022 but the sudden fishtailing has been occurring for several months now. 5. I assumed it was the tires and bought 4 new ones. On 5-15-2022 the car fishtailed so suddenly my passangers thought i was trying to avoid hitting something in the road.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-26
  • VIN: JH4KC1F75EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The steering ability and rear suspension failed on the vehicle. I was driving straight on a major interstate and the car veered to the right. I was able to correct the vehicle by turning the steering wheel to the left. This happened on several occasions during this particular weekend. However, 2 weeks prior to this incident, I received forward collision warnings, brake warnings, and lane departure warnings. I researched this issue online and it said it could possibly be a defective battery which I had recently replaced. The battery never failed. The warnings only happened for 2 days. Then the car started started fishtailing 2 weeks afterwards. I took the car into the dealership and the diagnosis was rear actuators which had been replaced 2 years prior. The cost of the repair is $4600. I informed them this is a safety issue and could cause harm to me or someone else. However, they refuse to take responsibility for the rear suspension issue.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-14
  • VIN: JH4KC1F98EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The component that failed is the left and right PAWS steering actuators. My car has 66,000 miles. At 25,000 miles, these parts were replaced by the dealer. Now at 66,000 miles, the parts are again failing. The car is unsafe to drive because the failure of these parts cause the rear wheels to "fishtail." It has happened to me 3 times this month and then I brought the car into the dealer. Although it didn't cause an accident, it certainly is easy to see how this loss of steering control would cause an accident. The dealer has confirmed the parts need replacing. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-01
  • VIN: JH4KC1F58EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Steering abruptly turns rear wheels when car is going straight, usually after a turn. This has happened multiple times when driving at moderate speeds over the last year or so. I thought it was the tires, so I got new tires and it is still happening. It is very scary and now I'm afraid to drive my car on the interstate at high speeds. I believe that this is a serious safety issue and consumers are not being treated fairly by Acura. In my opinion, this is an unsafe vehicle and should be recalled. If unstable abrupt steering of the rear wheels were to occur at high speed in traffic or along winding 2 lane roads, someone could be seriously injured or killed.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-11
  • VIN: JH4KC1F52EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: As of June 2021... Experiencing the same issues as everyone else. Purchased the 2014 model in 2015 and while it is paid off and out of warranty, the power all wheel steering (paws) feature malfunctions while driving at various speeds. The rear wheels would erroneously turn and caused the vehicle to suddenly jerk and fishtail. Technicians at the Mac Churchill - Fort Worth dealership always told me that they were unable to diagnose/duplicate the problem. While under warranty, I took the car to the dealership and reported the car making loud noises when steering, informing them that a moaning/rubbing noise could be heard from the car's rear when driving straight...again, I was told by the techs that they couldn't duplicate the problem. Made a call to Acura customer care 800 number on June 4, 2019 to report this same issue and received no resolution. The car is well out of warranty and all of the issues are happening quite frequently. Was traveling on hwy 45 headed back to DFW area. The posted speed limit is 75 mph. All the warning lights started flashing-paws, brake assist, power steering, hill, lane departure, etc. The power to engine was cut, thus slowing the car down, steering wheel alignment was off. This was VERY scary and of course, prompted me to just take it to an independent mechanic. The mechanic made me aware that they were unable to get parts to fix the problem and that their is an ongoing class action lawsuit regarding this issue. Called Acura customer care 800 # again and rep stated there is no known class action lawsuit related to my VIN #. I'm not sure what else to do about this issue. Acura should be held liable and fix this recall before someone gets seriously hurt.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-05
  • VIN: JH4KC1F91EC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The rear wheel steering system (P-AWS) causes the rear end to suddenly swing out of the traffic lane after making a turn. This has happened several times and since there is no way for the driver to control the rear wheel steering it is very difficult to avoid colliding with surrounding or oncoming traffic. I have contacted the dealer and they seem to have no idea as to what the cause could be or how to fix it as there are no warning indications.

Negative 2014 Acura Rlx car reviews

I purchased my RLX-ADV approximately four months ago and have only driven 1500 miles so far. Unfortunately, I have had to take it back to the dealer three times for repairs. The issues I experienced included an iPhone 4S problem with automatic dialling and hanging up, a low battery and charging system warning sign (which occurred in less than the first 50 miles), and the camera and LDW/LKAS shutting down due to overheating (when the temperature was around 90 degrees outside). The dealer recharged the battery, but no action was taken to address the other issues. Acura and the dealer insisted that the shut-down was the proper action by design. Although the SF Bay Area is known for its good climate, the LDW/LKAS shut-down happened multiple times in April, and I am concerned about what will happen in the summer. In May 2016, the battery issue was resolved after two charging visits, and I received a new battery less than 12 months after owning the car. The phone issue was also resolved after I upgraded to an iPhone 6S. However, the most important issue, the LDW/LKAS shut-down, persists. It consistently shuts down these important safety features when the outside temperature is around 90 degrees. I gave up fighting with Acura since they insisted that this is a necessary precaution to protect the delicate electronic system. I am disappointed that I spent extra money on this car since it was promised with these safety features. Acura sold me an ill-designed product that prioritizes the protection of the car over the driver. In May 2017, the LDW/LKAS shut-down is still a big problem, and I have already experienced it twice this year when the temperature went up to the low 90s. As an unsatisfied customer of Acura, I hope they can address this issue soon.

I recently upgraded from a 2009 RL to a 2014 RLX with Navigation. However, I have noticed a significant decrease in features and quality. The interior design is not up to par with what I expected and the radio is inferior to the standard model in 2009. The only additional feature I have noticed is the X. After a week of driving the RLX, I find myself wishing I had stayed with my 2009 model. If you are considering purchasing an RLX, I would suggest avoiding any models except the Advanced package, despite its high price. It is disappointing that Honda would label this as a luxury car, as it falls short of that standard. A loaded Civic would be a better option.

Ever since I got this car, I've been having a lot of problems with it. Whenever I take a left or right turn, the steering wheel locks up at a 45-degree angle and then jerks the car to straighten it out. This is really dangerous, and even though I've brought it in to get it fixed multiple times, the problem keeps coming back. I would strongly advise against getting this car to save yourself the stress and to protect yourself and others.

All in all, it sounds like you had a good experience with the car. However, you mentioned that you are unsure if you would lease it again if given the opportunity. Is there anything in particular that you didn't like about it?

I bought my Acura RLX in 2019 with 59,000 miles. Unfortunately, after only two weeks of driving, the car started veering to the right when I was driving straight. I took it to the Acura Dealership and they diagnosed the issue as the rear actuators. Thankfully, the car was still under warranty and the repair was covered. However, the same issue has now occurred again and it's a safety concern. The car turned sideways while I was driving and another car almost hit me from the side. The Acura dealership informed me that I would be responsible for the repair as they only warrant the repair for 12 months. I did some research and found that the vehicle had previously been recalled for steering suspension issues. I made a complaint with Acura client relations and a case manager was assigned to my case. Unfortunately, it has been a month and I have not received any follow-up from the case manager despite leaving several messages. I am grateful to have another car, but I am concerned about the safety of this vehicle. I refuse to drive it and put myself or someone else in danger. I hope that Acura will recall this issue as it is a serious safety concern. The car could veer in any direction at any time.

Just bought a 2014 RLX Advance and the difference from my 2011 RL is like night and day! We absolutely love this car. The RLX has it all - a great ride, state-of-the-art technology, and it looks fantastic. Thanks for making such a great car! - JG

This car has a lot of room and good gas mileage, especially if you keep your foot off the accelerator. It's still running great, although the rear passenger door lock has stopped working. It could benefit from bigger brakes for the driving I do, but other than that, it's still very smooth, solid, and quiet.

Acura plays by no one elses rules as far as I can tell.Every competitors car that Acura claims the Acura RLX competes with is either rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. The RLX is front wheel drive with Rear Wheel Precision Steer.Initial marketing reasons would conclude its silly for Acura to say they compete with those other cars, but the truth is when you drive the RLX and feel how wonderfully precise it is and how nice the drive is you have to ask yourself why would I want all wheel drive with more things to break and horrible fuel economy.I have had my RLX now for 1000+ miles and I love it.The more I drive it the more I love it.I have owned Lexus LS430, ES300h, BMW...
