2012 Bmw 328i problems
The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series consists of the BMW F30 (sedan version), BMW F31 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring') and BMW F34 (fastback version, marketed as 'Gran Turismo') compact executive cars. The F30/F31/F34 generation was produced from October 2011 to 2019 and is often collectively referred to as the F30.
For the sixth generation, the coupé and convertible models were spun off to create the new BMW 4 Series nameplate. BMW also introduced a separate hatchback model under the 3 Series nameplate called the 3 Series Gran Turismo (F34).
The F30 is the first generation of 3 Series to be powered by a range of turbocharged engines exclusively and electric power steering (replacing the hydraulic power steering systems used previously). The F30 also marked the 3 Series' first use of a three-cylinder engine in its 2015 facelift. A new plug-in hybrid F30 model was also introduced in 2016. A long-wheelbase sedan version (model code F35) was sold in China.
The M3 model (designated F80) was introduced in 2014 and is powered by the S55 twin-turbocharged straight-six engine.
In March 2019, the BMW 3 Series (G20) was released as the successor to the F30. But the F34 fastback model continued to be available until early 2020. Later, it was replaced by BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé (G26) in June 2021.

Common 2012 Bmw 328i problems
The BMW 328i, produced in 2012, is known for several common problems that car owners have reported. These issues include oil leaks, timing chain guide problems, cooling system failures, electrical failures, and seat problems.
- Timing Chain Guide Problems:
Early versions of the BMW 328i suffered from faulty timing chain guides, which could lead to catastrophic engine failure. When the guides failed, the timing chain would lose tension, causing internal engine problems. This issue was so severe that BMW issued a recall and replaced the faulty guides. Replacing the timing chain guides is an expensive and time-consuming process that requires special tools and expertise.
- Cooling System Failures:
The BMW 328i's cooling system is prone to failures, primarily due to bad or faulty water pumps. The water pump in the N20 engine is rated to last 60,000 miles, but owners have reported replacing theirs as early as 40,000 miles. Additionally, hot coolant can evaporate from the system over time, leading to low coolant conditions and overheating. This issue is common in turbocharged engines, including the 2012-2015 BMW 328i.
- Electrical Failures:
Electrical system problems have been reported by some 2012 BMW 328i owners. These issues typically involve the vehicle stalling while driving and are usually caused by computer issues. Repairing the problem can cost around $650.
- Seat Problems:
Seat issues are another common complaint from BMW 328i owners. The restraint system was addressed in a recall, but seat problems can still occur. These issues are typically related to the seat's restraint system and can be repaired for free if covered under the recall.
In summary, the BMW 328i, produced in 2012, has several common problems that car owners have reported. These issues include oil leaks, timing chain guide problems, cooling system failures, electrical failures, and seat problems. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-25
- VIN: WBADW3C58CE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased this vehicle [XXX]. Within 2 days a rattle could be heard coming from bmw vanos area, VANOS is a variable valve timing system used by BMW on various automotive petrol engines since 1992. I ceased all use of this vehicle on [XXX], only 3 days. Through my own research i found recall 23v-707 which lists my vehicle and this problem. I had the car towed to a bmw repair shop Harrison Motorsport. The owner said the engine needs to be replaced. Next I tried in Vane to get bmwna or bmwag to warrant this repair. I have numerous emails from bmwag of munich germany saying they are aware and their north america partners will be in touch. The recall states you may drive this vehicle even though it may produce a crash,,,,huh? I have another bmw specialist 4 miles from my home. I drove the car this time to Brian Motor Works. The owner here stated that without a doubt these bolts had come loose. We planned to have him fix it the next week. Still at this time there were no dashboard warnings or internal codes to be found. I tried to drive as slow as possible back home. I went 2 miles and the 1st lights appeared on the dashboard. The engine shut down and I narrowly avoided a crash. The engine will no longer turn over and I believe it has seized. Through research this issue was 1st admitted in 2014. bmw stated it illegal to sell this vehicle as a certified pre owned bmw until these bolts are checked and or replaced. Mine have never been checked or replaced. I am thankful each day that my family was not with me when this happened, My attention was totally on this vehicle when it lost all power to steer or brake. I was very lucky this day, but I fear others will not be so fortunate. thank you. Vehicle is available for inspection. With this malfunction, any person that sits in the passenger front seat is at risk of injury or death in the event of a collision. ENGINE PROBLEM

- VIN: WBA3A5C56CF
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2012 BMW 328i (F30 with N20 engine) had the dreaded timing chain guide failure, which is a very common issue with the N20 engine. There has been a warranty extension- https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10142923-9999.pdf and class action settlement- https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10201140-9999.pdf for this. But these doesn't address the safety concern. There has been numerous reports of timing chain & guide failures happening everyday in the various forums. The broken guides can lead to sudden engine failure and a loss of power to the vehicles. If this happens on the highway, this could be life threatening for the passengers. I kindly request NHTSA to look into this problem and issue a recall.
