The BMW i4 (model code G26) is a battery electric compact executive car produced by BMW since 2021. It adopts a five-door liftback body style and is marketed as a four-door coupé. The initial concept version, named BMW i Vision Dynamics, debuted at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. It is the fifth BMW i sub-brand model, and is sold in several variants at different performance levels, including the first battery-electric variant by BMW's motorsport division. The production version was revealed in March 2021 and went on sale in November of the same year as a 2022 model.

Development and launch

An investment of about €200 million in the Munich plant was made in preparation for the 2021 series production as the G26 BMW i4 is built on the same assembly line as cars with combustion engines and plug-in hybrids. While 90% of the existing production equipment in the body shop were incorporated into the production process of the i4, several new systems were required mainly for the floor assembly and rear structure as the electric drive and high-voltage battery are different from conventional architectures. The plant was closed for six weeks in the summer of 2020 to convert more than 1000 robots in the body shop and assembly area to prepare it for the assembly of the i4. The electric motor is assembled in Dingolfing. The i4 was revealed fully production-ready in March 2021, three months ahead of schedule, and went on sale in November 2021.

Over an ownership period of 200,000 km (125,000 mi), the eDrive40 is supposed to have a 45 percent lower global warming potential than that of a comparable diesel G20 3 Series or G22 4 Series model. Furthermore, BMW enhanced the sustainability of its supply chain and increased its use of recycled materials for the i4, cutting the production emissions by 18 percent.

Negative 2024 Bmw I4 car reviews

  1. Clark Pouros 2025-03-04

I recently received my i4 eDrive 35, which the BMW dealer in Kelowna refers to as i4-35. I waited for about 6 months to get it, which I think is actually pretty fast considering it only went into production in November '22 and I got mine in April '23. I was really excited to get this car with all the advertised features, such as the 418KM range, being able to use my phone as a key, and advanced driving features like lane centering, lane changing, and following a lane or cars on the freeway in cruise control. I ordered everything on the menu and even tried to get the suspension upgrades. So, I was expecting to get all of these features, right? When I picked up the car in April, it was a beauty. However, the first thing I noticed was that the advanced driving package wasn't included. I was upset, but the dealer explained that the Advanced Driving Package was not available on the eDrive35 when we were ordering it, so he didn't discuss it with me. I was shocked and wished he had told me earlier, but I decided to go with the car in this configuration and see how it goes. Here are some things I like about the car: 1) The looks, fit, and finish are incredible, exactly what I expect from BMW. 2) I love my buttons, which is one of the main reasons I chose BMW over Tesla and Polestar's laptops. Connected Drive and iDrive 8 work great. 3) The center console display is crystal clear and easy to use. You can control things by voice, buttons, or through the touchscreen. I'm beginning to get used to just driving the system by voice. For example, I can say 4) I absolutely love the straight-line take-off, it's fantastic and I can't get enough of it. 5) The charging times are very acceptable, and I'm usually done in 30 to 45 minutes at level 3. 6) The range seems to be in line with their ads, but I'm not entirely sure since their range indicator is unreliable. I have to go by my charge gauge instead. I ordered the car with 184) The Alexa home integration advertised by BMW allows you to check on your car's charge and status from inside your house. However, I have had some trouble getting it to work properly. 5) The range indicator always shows a range of 200 to 300 KM's, even at 100% charge. While this may not be the exact range advertised by BMW, it is still a decent range. 6) I was excited about the heads-up display when I ordered it, but during the day it can be difficult to see, even at 100% brightness. At night, it can be distracting until the brightness is adjusted. An auto-adjust feature would be helpful. 7) The car is powerful, but it is also heavy, which can be felt around windy corners. While it may not handle like a 3 or 4 series, it still performs well. 8) The auto parking feature is cool, but it has only been successful about 20% of the time in our underground parkade. It works much better outside, with an 80% success rate. 9) I have a large song collection that I wanted to plug in via USB, but it was not as easy as it was with my previous car. It took some time to get the songs recognized by the i4-35, but it has figured out most of my playlists. However, there is no feedback regarding any errors. 10) BMW now offers an aftermarket Frunk for the i4. While some may see this as a cheap move, it is still an option for those who want it. 11) The 360 reversing camera is great, but the split screen can be a bit of a drawback. The left screen/camera appears to be accurate, but the right screen displays a strange wall-like image when backing up with anything beside the car. It could use some improvement. I was hoping to try out the Advanced Driving Package, but unfortunately, due to BMW's confusing options and the lack of knowledge from their dealers about their own product, I will have to wait. Perhaps it's for the better, considering the issues already present with the i4.

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I had a little accident earlier. I touched a curb while driving at a very low speed and my car got totaled. Don't worry though, I'm okay! Just a little shaken up. Just wanted to remind you to be careful on the road. Take care!

  3. Johan Waters 2024-03-05

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the charging speed may be a bit slow and the range may not be as great as you were hoping for. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

  4. Jordon O'Connell 2024-02-12

Congratulations on your new i4 eDrive 40 with 19-inch wheels! From your description, it sounds like you're enjoying a very comfortable ride with awesome heat and AC. The finish is incredible, as one would expect from BMW. It's great to hear that the balance of buttons and touch screen is perfect, especially compared to other models that have 'too much iPad.' The range of 250-280 miles at 100% battery is impressive, and it's good to know that the wireless Apple CarPlay is available, even though it has been breaking down and disconnecting. It's unfortunate that the advanced driving features like lane centering and lane assist lag behind your wife's 5-year-old Audi, but perhaps an upgraded package could help. It's understandable that you're disappointed with the BMW Navigation, but it's great that you've found a solution by using Google Maps as your default. Although the iDrive is easy to use, it's frustrating that the screen keeps going off every few minutes. It's good to know that BMW is aware of the issue and is working on a patch to fix it. Lastly, it's great that you have a free charging plan with Electrify America, even though the stations have not delivered more than 90-100 kW. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Positive 2024 Bmw I4 car reviews

  1. Sylvester Veum 2025-03-13

In 2020, we built a new net-zero house with a 15 kW solar array. When the lease on our 2019 Honda CR-V ended, we decided to shop for an EV to replace it. We tested several models, including the Model Y, Mach-E, ID.4, EV6, Ioniq 5, BMW iX, and BMW i4. After careful consideration, we settled on the i4 eDrive 40 with the M-Sport package. This was a big step for us, not only because we switched to an EV, but also because it replaced an AWD SUV (our other car is a 2018 Audi S4). We chose the i4 based on its driving dynamics, range, and build quality. We figured that the large hatchback would manage 99% of the hauling tasks of an SUV or wagon. We chose the RWD i4 based on better range and driving dynamics than the AWD i4 M50. Living on the south coast of MA, winters are mild, so we anticipated that RWD and the OEM all-season (i.e., no season) tires would be sufficient all year round, particularly as we have the S4 with an 18The i4's single motor provides more than adequate acceleration, with a high 4 to low 5 second 0-60 according to reviews. Its instant torque makes merging on highways or passing bicycles on country roads easy, much like my BMW R1250RS motorbike. The interior build quality and feel are great, and the car is very quiet on the road. We opted for the Harmon Kardon sound system upgrade, which is worth the money, especially since the background noise level is minimal. This is the first car I've owned where listening to classical music is worthwhile. The center tunnel (this is a dual-purpose ICE/EV platform) and limited rear passenger leg and headroom are downsides to the interior, but not a problem for us with no kids or dogs. The hatch works well, and the car can easily haul a bicycle or all our trash & recycling for the dump run. The iDrive 8 infotainment system is on par with the better end of those in EVs we tested (ID.4 the worst), but the lack of physical buttons for some functions is irritating. My biggest gripe is with turning on the seat heaters (at least the steering wheel has a one-level physical button) and the lack of physical audio preset buttons. Voice control works well but is too laggy for flipping between Sirius XM channels. The graphic quality of the display is excellent, and we haven't had any issues with using it in bright sun or at night. The heads up display also works well and has multiple options, but it's inconsistent in showing next turn instructions from Waze via Android Auto. I don't know if that's BMW or an Android Auto or Waze programming issue. Sometimes the instructions show on the HUD and sometimes they don't. The OEM nav is probably okay but hasn't seen much use since Waze is better, even if I can only see it on the infotainment screen and not the HUD.We initially wanted dynamic cruise control and a 360-degree parking camera, but unfortunately, they became unavailable due to issues with the wiring harnesses that were made in Ukraine. Despite this setback, we are still very happy with the M-Sport package, although it only comes with staggered width 19Maximizing coasting and judging regen by moving the drive selector from D to B to stop at a light or intersection without touching the brake is a fun experience. Additionally, being inside the car means not having to look at its unattractive nose, although it does have a low coefficient of drag. While the i4 may not appeal to a wide audience, it's near perfect for us. If only we could have gotten the dynamic cruise and parking assist features, we would give it five stars. The first scheduled maintenance is at 40,000 miles and is relatively trivial, which is remarkable compared to all the ICE cars we've owned. We suspect the brake rotors will last at least 100,000 miles, whereas our previous Audis, Toyotas, and Hondas all required new rotors by 40,000. The negatives are minor so far, such as the M steering wheel being too thick and the metal trim on its spokes being very cold and taking a long time to warm up in winter despite the heated wheel. The outside doorhandles are oddly designed, making it easy for your hand to slide off when trying to open them. The blind spot warning lights in the side mirrors are too small and peripherally placed to be ideal. Our Audi S4 has big warning lights in the side mirror bezel that are much better, but the mirror placement in the i4 wouldn't allow it. The flat top of the rear bumper trim is a dirt magnet, which might be better if it was angled down a bit. However, these are all minor complaints so far.

  2. Ethel O'Keefe 2025-03-03

I was fortunate enough to find a well-spec'd 2023 I4 eDrive40 that became available in late December 2022 due to someone backing out. It has everything I was looking for and none of the features I didn't want, like parking assistance. The car is incredibly fast, smooth, comfortable, and relaxing to drive. The Harmon Kardon sound system is the best I've ever heard in a car (and I've owned many BMWs). I would even dare to compare it to the Bowers and Wilkins sound system, that's how good it is. The hatchback is also awesome! Overall, I give this well-built and good-looking EV two thumbs up. While I disagree with some of the comments made by the two testers, such as their cons, they are entitled to their opinions.

  3. Brycen Paucek 2025-03-01

I'm excited to share that I've chosen the BMW as my first electric car! It has a sleek sports car design and delivers high performance. However, I did notice that the battery life wasn't quite what I expected.

  4. Chet Weimann 2025-02-27

I've owned the BMW i4 for 2 weeks now and it has not disappointed me. The comfort level is outstanding and the battery distance is unbelievable - over 300 miles! It rides so nicely and I've received multiple compliments on the choice of color, San Remo Green. If you're contemplating an EV and want something other than the same old Tesla, I highly recommend taking a look at this beauty.

  5. Doris Lakin 2025-02-14

The i4 has all the feel and drive performance expected from a BMW. I love the curved touchscreen extension from the main dash, it's a great look and feel. The car drives like a regular car, but with the added bonus of being electric. The craftsmanship is exactly what I expected from BMW, not cheap but definitely worth the price. Speaking of price, it's in the middle range of the EV market. The price per distance per charge is really good, with an average of 160 miles between 25%-80% charging.
